tirumāl (p. 240) s. Vishnu, as lord of illusion, in the universe, விட்டுணு; [ex மால், illusion.] திருமாலவதாரம், 1. Ten incarnations of Vishnu. 1. Matsya, மச்சம், a fish assumed to kill சோமுகன், an Asura who had stolen the Vedas and hidden them in the sea. 2. Kurma, கூர்மம். tortoise, assumed to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick in churning the sea of milk to obtain Amrita, or nectar. 3. Varáha, வராகம், a boar, assumed to open and spread out the earth which இரணியாக்கன் had rolled up, as a scroll, and sunk in the ocean; and to kill him. 4. Narasingha, நரசிங்கம், manlion, assumed to destroy இரணியகசிபன், the younger brother of இரணியாக்கன், who, to avenge the death of his brother, had abolished the worship of Vishnu.--Note. These four were assumed without parents. 5. Váhmana, வாமனம், the dwarf born of காசிபன் and அதிதி to overcome மாபலி by deceit, coming to him as a beggar. 6. Parasurama, பரசுராமன், or the axe bearing Rama, born of சமதக்கினி and இரேணுகை to kill the Kshtriyas who oppressed the brahmans. 7. Ramachandra, இராமன், king of Ayodhya, born of தசரதன் and கோசலை, to kill Ravana, king of Lanka, and other Rakshasas. 8. Balab'hadra, பலபத் திரன், half brother of krishna; his father's name was வசுதேவன், and he had two mothers, தேவகி and உரோகணி. He come to destroy பிரலம்பன் and his Rakshasas. 9. Krishna, கண்ணன், son of வசு தேவன் and தேவகி, came to excite the wars of the Bharata, and to relieve the earth of its over-burdened population. 1. The horse, கற்கி, yet future, and for the purpose of destroying the universe.--Note. The poet Jayadeva places Krishna as the eighth and makes the ninth, Buddha. (See மோ கினி.) 12. யாகபதி, Yágapati, the lord of sacrifices, always receiving the first of the offerings. 13. வியாதன், Vyasa, son of Parásara, arranger of the Vedas. 14. தன்வந்தரி, D'hanvantari, a physician of the gods. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். திருவுளங்கொள்ள, inf. To approve, in case of a deity, or holy person; to deign, to be pleased. சுவாமிஅப்படியேதிருவுளங்கொண்டிருக்கிருக்கிறார்.... To speak, said of a deity or great person; to condescend to speak. திருவுளம்வைத்தல், v. noun. A deity, a guru, &c., exercising grace, deigning, vouchsafing. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A female ornament of solid gold bearing the figure of Lukshmi, worn on the forehead, நுதன்மே லணி. See உத்தி. திருவூசல்--திருவூஞ்சல், s. A swing for the idol, used on the last day of the annual festival, and on some other special occasions; a kind of cot, தேவவூச லாட்டு. திருவூஞ்சலாட, inf. To swing the idol. திருவேங்கடம், s. A place sacred to Vishnu, திருப்பதி. See திசை. திருவேடம், s. Sacred dress of siva, or of his followers, such as red cloths, sacred beads, &c. 2. Ear-rings made of gold or copper worn by the பண்டாரம், the தம்பிரான், &c., சிவனடியார்காதணி. திருவேடம்பூண, inf. To wear the distinguishing marks of the Saiva sect. திருவேரகம், s. Trivaraka near Pondichery, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, குமரன்ஸ்தலம். திருவொற்றாடை, s. pṉṟi (p. 304) s. A hog, a swine, வராகம், vulgarly, பண்ணி. 2. A Tamil country. See கொடுந்தமிழ்நாடு.--Of hogs are, ஊர்ப்பன்றி, domestic hog; காட்டுப்பன்றி, wild hog; ஏய்ப் பன்றி, முள்ளம்பன்றி, a hedge hog, porcupine, கடற்பன்றி, a sea hog; இனப்பன்றி, கிளைப்பன்றி, wild hog in the herd. பன்றியோடிணங்கியகன்றுமலந்தின்னும். Even the calf, if associated with the hog, will eat excrement. பன்றிபோலேதின்கிறவன், appel. n. One who gormandizes like a hog. பன்றிக்கரணம், s. One of the astrological karna. See காரணம். பன்றிக்கிடை--பன்றிக்கூடு, s. A pig-sty. பன்றிக்கிளி, s. A kind of fish. பன்றிக்குட்டி, s. A young pig, a porkling. பன்றிக்கொம்பு, s. A hog's tusk. 2. Hog's bristles. பன்றிமீன், s. A sea-fish, sy&aena; Portug; peixe porco, a sea-hog. பன்றிமுள், s. Porcupine's quill. பன்றியாட்டம், v. noun. Hoggishness, swinishness. பன்றியிறைச்சி, s. Hog's flesh, pork, bacon. பன்றிவார், s. Solid fat flesh of the hog, as bacon. பன்றிவெட்டுதல், v. noun. Boys in a play beating one going on all fours. 32) *

purāṇam (p. 325) s. Antiquity, பழமை. 2. Ancient story; a purana, a legendary tale containing accounts of gods, heroes, Rishis, &c., பழங்கதை. (c.) புராணம், 18. The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read. makā (p. 338) adj. Great, high, exalted, dignified, noble, honorable, பெருமையான. 2. Immense, prodigious, stupendous, monstrous, extreme, அளவற்ற. 3. Superior, greater, paramount, superlative, உயர்ந்த. 4. Intense, மிகுந்த.--Note. This particle is sometimes repeated to express intensity, as மகாமகாப் பட்ட, the greatest. (Beschi.) Also sometimes contracted to மக, and மா, as மகராசா, மாசனங்கள்; [ex மகத்து.] அதுமகாஅரிது. It is very difficult. அதுமகாஅபூர்வம். It is very rare. மகராசன், s. A king, அரசன். 2. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. A division of hell, or Tartarus, நரகத்தினோரிடம். மகாசகை, s. A plant bearing an unfading flower, Gomphr&oe;na globosa, வாடா மல்லிகை. W. p. 652. MAHASAHA. மகாசங்கம், s. A hundred billions. 2. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. A charioteer commanding 11, chariots; any warrior of note, 11,--ந்தேருக்குத்தலைவன். மகாராசன்--மகாராசா, s. A great king, a monarch. W.p. 651. MAHARAJA. 2. An epithet of Kuvera. 3. One who possesses elephants, யானைகட்டிவாழ்பவன். மகாராட்டிரம், s. [Tamil மராடம்.] The original Maharatta country. See தேசம். 2. The Maharatta language. See பாஷை. மகாலட்சுமி, s. The great Lukshmi, goddess of felicity. மகாலயம், s. The world of Brahma, பிரமனுலகம். 2. A temple, கோயில். மகாலுத்தன்--மகாலோபி, s. A very great niggard. மகாலோகம்--மகலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds. See மேலுலகு. மகாவராகம், s. Vishnu in the hogincarnation, விஷ்ணு. மகாவற்புதம், s. A large number, ஓர் பேரெண்; [ex அற்புதம்.] மகாவாக்கியம், s. A mystic word in the Vedanta, a religious formule among the Saivas and others. மகாவிசுவம்--மகாவிஷீவம்--மகாவிடு வம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. A number probably one thousand billions, ஓரெண். 2. A certain city, நளனுடையநகரம். 3. A residence of Vishnu, வைகுந்தம். மகாவிந்து, s. Mica or talc, as அப் பிரகம். மகாவிரதம்--மாவிரதம், s. One of the six approved or orthodox sects of the Saiva religion, சைவசமயத்தொன்று. மகாவிரதர், s. [sing. மகாவிரதி.] Professors of the above sect, சைவர்கள். மகாவெள்ளம், s. A great flood. 2. (fig.) A great number, ஓரெண். மகேசன்--மகேசுரன்--மகேசுவரன்-மகேச்சுரன்--மகேச்சுவரன், s. Siva--as Mahasuran, or obscurer of souls. See பஞ்ச கர்த்தாக்கள். His consort is called மகேசு வரி. மகேந்திரசாலம், s. [in mythol. also மகேந்திரபுரி.] A famous town said to have been inhabited by the Asuras but afterwards submerged in the southern ocean, ஓர்நகரம். மகேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். மகைசுவரியம், s. [also மகதைசுவரியம்.] Great opulence. மகோததி, s. The ocean, the great sea, கடல்; [ex உததி, sea.] 2. [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம். Compare அத்தோதயம். மகோதரம், s. Dropsy of the belly, ascites, ஓர்நோய். 2. A large belly, பெரு வயிறு; [ex உதரம், belly.] மகோதரன், s. [in mythol.] The minister of Ravana; (lit.) the big bellied, இராவ ணன்மந்திரி. மகோபநிஷதம், s. One of the Upanishads. See உபநிடதம். மகோற்சவம், s. A great festival. மகோன்னதபலசாலிகள், s.
