aṟṟu (p. 33) . A symbolic verb or a particle of similitude, as, so, like, &c., அத்தன்மைத் து. 2. An expletive சாரியை, chiefly employed in declining neuter plurals in அ, as அவற்றால், by them. (p.) பாலொடுதேன்கலந்தற்றே. Like honey mixed with milk. பலவற்றுக்கோடு, s. The branches of many (trees) or the horns of many (beasts.) 74)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

puṟm (p. 328) s. Side, part, face, surface, பக் கம். 2. Outside, exterior--oppos. to அகம். 3. Backside, behind, back ground, rear, பின்புறம். 4. Back of the person, முதுகு. 5. Place, இடம். 6. Side, party, interest, பட்சம். 7. Region, point of compass, quarter, tract or part of a country; district, &c., திசை. 8. That which is foreign, extraneous, அந்நியம். 9. Backbiting, aspersion, calumny, புறங்கூற்று. 1. A surrounding wall or fortification, சுற்றுமதில். 11. A form of the seventh case, the ablative of place, ஏழனுருபு. 12. Valor, bravery, வீரம். அதைப்புறத்திலேவை. Put that separately. புறத்திலேசொல்லப்படாது. This is not to be spoken abroad. உள்ளும்புறமும்ஒத்தவன். A sincere and upright man. (lit.) alike within and without. புறக்கடல், s. [in puran. geogra.] The extreme circumambient sea. புறக்கட்டு, s. Exterior apartments of an edifice. புறக்கட்டுக்கட்ட, inf. To tie one's hands behind his back. (R.) புறக்கண், s. Exterior of the eye-lids. புறக்கதவு, s. The back door, பின்கதவு. புறக்கந்து, s. [prov.] The ends of an axle of a cart. See கந்து. புறக்காதுபடல், v. noun. [prov.] Being turned forward as the lobe of the ear by bad treatment after perforation. புறக்காவல், s. Exterior guard. 2. External or physical protection, as distinguished from self-government. புறக்காழ்--புறங்காழ், s. Hard timber in the outer part of a tree while the middle is soft, as the palmyra, வெளிவ யிரம். See காழ். புறக்கூரை, s. Back part of the roof, பின்கூரை. புறக்கை, s. Outwardness, turning outside, வெளிப்புறம். 2. The right side in turning, &c., வலப்புறம். 3. As புறங்கை. புறக்கோடி, s. Back yard, புறக்கடை. புறக்கோட்டை, s. An outer work of a castle, barbacan. புறங்கடை, s. Out-side, outer gate, outer court, வெளிவாசல். (p.) புறங்காடு, s. A place of cremation, சுடு காடு. (சது.) புறங்காட்ட, inf. To turn the back, in contempt, or through incivility, வெறுப் புக்காட்ட. 2. To turn the back when routed or defeated. புறங்காண, inf. To defeat, put to flight, முறியஅடிக்க. [in gram.] The demonstrative prefixes அ, இ, and உ, when not a part of the word.--oppos. to அகச்சுட்டு. புறச்சுவர்தீற்ற, inf. To plaster the outside wall. 2. [fig.] To aid strangers. See உட்சுவர். புறச்சுற்று, s. Parts about a country. as சுற்றுப்புறம். புறச்சேரி--புறஞ்சேரி, s. An outside village. புறத்தவன், s. A name of Aiyanar, ஐய னார். (சது.) புறத்தான், s. A foreigner, a stranger, one from without, அந்நியன். புறத்தி, s. That which is out-side, external, foreign, extrinsic, புறம்பு. (usage.) புறத்திக்கிடம்பண்ண, inf. To expose a friend to reproach. புறத்திணை, s. [as புறப்பொருள்.] Public or state affairs, reference to foreign powers as distinguished from அகத்திணை, domestic or love affairs. It is divided into eight branches: 1. பகைநிரைகவர்தல். 2. பகைவர்கவர்ந்ததன்னிரைமீட்டல். 3. பகைமேற் செல்லல். 4. வரும்பகைமுன்னெதிரூன்றல். 5. தன்னரண்காத்தல். 6. பொருதல். 7. போர்வெ ல்லல், which see. Three kinds of rhetorical rules to be followed in explaining and proving a doctrine; 1. ஒழுக்கப் புறத்திணை, from the customs and manners of great men; 2. நூற்புறத்திணை, from the Vedas or law-books; 3. கரிப்புறத்திணை, or சாட்சிப்புறத்திணை, from the writings and testimonies of the learned. புறத்திண்ணை--புறந்திண்ணை, s. The outer திண்ணை. புறத்தியம், s. As புறத்தி. புறத்தியான்--புறத்திமனிதன், s. Another, a stranger. புறத்துறுப்பு--புறத்தங்கம், s. A song sung according to some metre. ஓர்பண். (சது.) புறந்தர, inf. To protect, maintain, cherish, ஓம்ப. 2. As புறங்காட்ட. (p.) புறந்தாள், s. Upper part of the foot, புறங்கால். புறப்பகை, s. Avowed hatred. புறப்பக்கம், s. [in log.] An inference regarding secular matters. See பக்கம். புறப்பத்தியம், s. Diet, or regimen, observed after a course of medicine, as மறுபத்தியம்--oppos. to அகப்பத்தியம். புறப்பற்று, s. External attachments, or connexions--oppos. to அகப்பற்று. புறப்பொருள், s. External or state affairs, especially such as relate to war, being a division of the subjects embraced in பொருள். See புறத்திணை. புறமடை, s. An out-side channel for water. 2. Outer oblations, as flesh and spirits, presented to ferocious deities out-side the temple. See உண்மடை. புறமட்டை, s. Out-side or back-side of a cocoa or palmyra branch. புறமயிர், s. The hairs of the body, not of the head. புறமறிவு, s. Regard for the welfare of others, benevolence, sympathy, பிறர்க்கு நன்மைநினைக்கை. புறம்பணை--புறவணி, s. A forest-tract of country, முல்லைநிலம். 2. A hilly or mountainous tract, as away from population, குறிஞ்சிநிலம். (சது.) புறம்பு, s. Exterior, out-side, abroad, புறம். 2. Exclusion, separation, நீக்கம். 3. That which is apart, detached, distinct, exclusive, separate, by itself, தனியானது. 4. What is outer, or other, மற்றை. (c.) புறம்பாக்க, inf. To exclude, excommunicate. புறம்பாய்--புறம்பே, adv. Outwardly. புறம்புக்குப்போக, inf. To go out to stool. புறம்புபண்ண, inf. To Set apart, தனி ப்புறவைக்க. 2. As புறம்பாக்க. புறம்புபுறம்பாய், adv. Distinctly, separately. புறம்போக்கு, s. Part of a corn-field not cultivated; also புறம்போக்குத்தரிசு. புறவடி, s. Upper part of the foot, as புறங்கால்; [ex அடி.] புறவடை, s. A field given to other people to till. புறவயிரம், s. vṭi (p. 375) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், வடிய, v. n. To percolate, to flow downwards, to trickle down, or fall--as tears from the eyes; to distil by drops, ஒழுக. 2. To be diminished, as water in a tank or river; to ebb, to flow back to the sea, வற்ற. 3. To lengthen, to become long, நீள. ஆறுஒருமுழம்வடிந்தது. The river is fallen a cubit. புண்ணிலேசீவடிகிறது. Matter comes from the ulcer. வடிகாது--வடிந்தகாது, s. [also வடிசற் காது.] Ears with the perforation much enlarged, தொங்குசெவி. வடிகை, v. noun. Ebbing of the tide, வற்றுகை. 2. Dropping of tears, blood, &c., ஒழுகுகை. வடிசல்--வடிதல்--வடியல், v. noun. Ebbing; decreasing, வற்றல். 2. Being long, lengthening, நீளம். (சது.) வடிவு, v. noun. The ebb, as வடிசல், 2.
