urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. To be constipated--as the system; to be obstructed--as waters, as humors in the system, blood, urine, menstruation, &c., தடைப்பட. ஒருமயிரினாலேகட்டுப்படுவான். He may be bound by a single hair; i. e. he will be easily persuaded or prevailed upon. கட்டுப்படுத்த, inf. To restrain, confine, subdue, subordinate, control, restrict, subject, கட்டுக்குளடக்க. கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To stop, prevent. கட்டுப்பாடு, s. [vul.] Wholly, entirely--used with words implying rejection, destruction, &c., or with negatives. கட்டோடேயழிந்துபோயிற்று. It is utterly ruined. என்னிடத்திலேகட்டோடேயில்லை. kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். See வருடம். குருநாள், s. The eighth lunar asterism, பூசம். குருநாடிவிதி, s. A treatise on the ten tubular vessels in the system, and for the ascertainment of diseases by feeling the pulse, நாடிச்சாத்திரம். குருபாலப்பிரபோதிகை, s. One of the commentaries on the Sanscrit Amara Cosha. குருநோய்--குருவியாதி, s. The smallpox, வசூரி. குருபுறப்பட-குருக்காண-குருவார்க்க, inf. To take the small-pox. குருப்பிக்க, inf. v. n. [prov.] To shoot forth; to break out--as pimples, &c. குருமுகறன்--குருமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] One whose face in pock-pitted. குருவண்டு--குருப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of spotted wasp, ஓர்குளவி. குருவெறும்பு, s. A kind of large, red ant. See எறும்பு. குருவேர், s. A plant, the roots of which are very fragrant, ஓர்செடியின்வேர். 24)

ketam (p. 138) adj. Past, gone. See கதம். கெதப்பரிவிருத்தி, s. [in astron.] The number of synodic revolutions of a planet, rejected as the first step in the use of the பரிவிருத்தி tables. It indicates which of the tables is to be employed in the calculation. கெதவாக்கியம், s. See கதவாக்கியம். 6) *

caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. To take down a scaffolding. 2. To express juice. 3. To swallow the juice of any thing chewed or dissolved in the mouth. சாரபூமி, s. Rich, fertile land. (Rare.) சாரமேற்ற, inf. To communicate or infuse virtue, savor, force, vigor, &c. சாரமற்ற, adj. Insipid, unsavory, unrelishable. 2. [in discourse.] Powerless, vapid, uninteresting, not sound, profound, forcible or impressive, &c., உருசி யற்ற. சாரமற்றவன், s. One without knowledge, learning, strength, vigor, property, merit of austerities, &c. சாரஞ்சுட, inf. To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note. The letters of the alphabet are substituted for numbers with a view to assist the memory and secure correctness in the tables. Compare சாவாக்கியம். நீதிசாரம், s. civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)

Other specifications are included, as இயற்சொல். common words; திரிசொல், learned words; திசைச்சொல், provincial words, or according to the நன்னூல், words peculiar to or derived from any of the Tamil provinces around the Madura district, or form any of the Indian cognate languages; வடசொல் or வடமொழி, words of Sanscrit origin. அவனுடையபேச்சு காற்சொல்லுமரைச்சொல்லும்..... He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. (See மடக்கு, &c.) 2. Elegance of expression. 3. Correct pronunciation. 4. Empty politeness, mere professions of kindness, உபசாரவசனம். சொல்லழுத்தம், s. Emphasis,--Note. Strictly speaking there is no increased meaning given to a word in Tamil, by a stress laid upon it; this is done by intensitive particles. சொல்லறுதி, s. Decisiveness in selling, making an offer, striking a bargain, &c. சொல்லாட, inf. To utter words, speak, talk. (p.) (குறள். chap. 82.) சொல்லாதசொல், s. Improper, indecent, uncourteous, offensive language. 2. Things improper to be told, secrets, &c. சொல்லாளி, s. One faithful to his word. 2. An eloquent person. (c.) சொல்லானந்தம், s. Unlucky or inauspicious use of a word, as portending evil to the hero of the poem. சொல்லிணக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] The chapter on words; etymology. சொல்லின்முடிவினப்பொருள்முடித்தல், v. noun. Confining the author's meaning to the finishing word or phrase, one of the thirty-two உத்தி. (p.) சொல்லின்பம், s. Euphony. சொல்லுக்குச்சொல், s. Returning abusive language. (c.) சொல்லுதவி--சொற்சகாயம்--சொற்று ணை. s. Aid by words--as recommendation. சொல்லுறுதி, s. Certainty, positive declaration, a averment, &c., as to a fact, event, &c. 2. Keeping one's word, faithfulness to one's promise. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. சொல்லுரை, s. Explanation of a word --an adopted phrase. சொல்லேருழவர், s. (plu.) Poets, the powerful in language, புலவர். 2. King's ministers, மந்திரிகள்; (lit.) those who plough with words. சொல்வகை, s. Classification of the parts of speech. 2. Proper method of speaking, as of a teacher, barrister, &c., stating a question. சொல்வல்லபம், s. Power of language, ability of speech, eloquence. சொல்வழிகேட்க, inf. To be obedient. சொல்வளம், s. Fluency in words, readiness in speaking. 2. Copiousness of language. சொல்வண்மை, s. Eloquence, power of language. 2. Emphasis. 3. Distinctness of language. சொல்விளம்பி, appel. n. Toddy--as causing babbling, கள். சொற்கலகம், s. Dispute, controversy. சொற்காக்க, inf. To keep one's word. 2. To speak cautiously, so as not to commit one's self. சொற்குற்றம், s. Verbal mistake, etymological error. சொற்குற்றம்வாய்க்குற்றம், s. Trivial mistakes in words. சொற்கேட்க, inf. To wait or attend on one. 2. To be obedient, listen to, regard, obey. சொற்கேளாப்பிள்ளையினால்குலத்துக்கீனம். The disobedient child will bring disgrace on the family. சொற்சாதுரியம், s. Eloquence. சொற்சித்திரம், s. A quibble, pun, play on words. சொற்சிமிட்டு, s. [prov.] The use of a little word or particle, easily overlooked yet materially affecting the meaning. 2. Artfulness, dexterity or ingenuity in the use of words. சொற்சிறப்பு, s. Superiority of one word over another to convey the author's meaning, or to suit the connection 2. Verbosity, bombast. சொற்சுவை, s. Choice selection of words. சொற்சோர்வு, v. noun. Faltering in speech. 2. Fault or error in discourse, either inadvertently, or intentionally. சொற்பட, inf.
