திக்கு
tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

tirumāl (p. 240) s. Vishnu, as lord of illusion, in the universe, விட்டுணு; [ex மால், illusion.] திருமாலவதாரம், 1. Ten incarnations of Vishnu. 1. Matsya, மச்சம், a fish assumed to kill சோமுகன், an Asura who had stolen the Vedas and hidden them in the sea. 2. Kurma, கூர்மம். tortoise, assumed to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick in churning the sea of milk to obtain Amrita, or nectar. 3. Varáha, வராகம், a boar, assumed to open and spread out the earth which இரணியாக்கன் had rolled up, as a scroll, and sunk in the ocean; and to kill him. 4. Narasingha, நரசிங்கம், manlion, assumed to destroy இரணியகசிபன், the younger brother of இரணியாக்கன், who, to avenge the death of his brother, had abolished the worship of Vishnu.--Note. These four were assumed without parents. 5. Váhmana, வாமனம், the dwarf born of காசிபன் and அதிதி to overcome மாபலி by deceit, coming to him as a beggar. 6. Parasurama, பரசுராமன், or the axe bearing Rama, born of சமதக்கினி and இரேணுகை to kill the Kshtriyas who oppressed the brahmans. 7. Ramachandra, இராமன், king of Ayodhya, born of தசரதன் and கோசலை, to kill Ravana, king of Lanka, and other Rakshasas. 8. Balab'hadra, பலபத் திரன், half brother of krishna; his father's name was வசுதேவன், and he had two mothers, தேவகி and உரோகணி. He come to destroy பிரலம்பன் and his Rakshasas. 9. Krishna, கண்ணன், son of வசு தேவன் and தேவகி, came to excite the wars of the Bharata, and to relieve the earth of its over-burdened population. 1. The horse, கற்கி, yet future, and for the purpose of destroying the universe.--Note. The poet Jayadeva places Krishna as the eighth and makes the ninth, Buddha. Another class of fifteen incarnations of Vishnu is given. 1. சனகன், Sanaka. 2. சனந்தனன், Sanandana. 3. சனாதன், Sanáta. 4. சனற்குமாரன், Sanatkumara. Rishis regarded as representatives of Brahma and celebrated in the Bagavata. 5. நரநாராயணன், Naranarayana, a great personage mentioned in the Maha B'harata. 6. கபிலன், Capila, founder of the Sank'hya philosophy. 7. இடபன், Vrishab'ha-Yogi, the first of the twenty-four Jaina saints. 8. நாரதன், Nárada,, inventor of the lute, messenger of the gods, and first of the ten principal Munis. 9. அயக்கிரீவன் ((lit.) the horse-headed), Hayagriva, of the Maha Bharata, to be distinguished from the Asura of the same name. 1. தத்தாத்திரேயன், Dattatreya, mentioned in Bagavata. 11. மோகினி, Mohini, a fascinating female. (See மோ கினி.) 12. யாகபதி, Yágapati, the lord of sacrifices, always receiving the first of the offerings. 13. வியாதன், Vyasa, son of Parásara, arranger of the Vedas. 14. தன்வந்தரி, D'hanvantari, a physician of the gods. (See தன்வந்தரி.) 15. பௌத் தன், Budha, the head of the Buddhist system; by some considered the ninth principal Avatar. திருமாலாயுதம், 5, s. The five weapons of Vishnu. 1. சங்கம் or பாஞ்சசன்னியம், chank; 2. சக்கரம் or சுதரிசனம், a wheellike missile; 3. தனுசு or சாரங்கம், bow. 4. வாள் or நாந்தகம், sword; 5. தண்டு or கௌமோதகி, club.--Note. These are pictured on a metal plate, and worn on the neck as an ornament, or amulet, by children, which is called பஞ்சாயுதம். திருமாலுந்தி, s. The lotus, said to resemble the navel of Vishnu, தாமரை. திருமால்புதல்வன், s. Kama as son of Vishnu, மன்மதன். திருமாளிகை, s. the house of a spiritual preceptor, in the language of his disciples. திருமாளிகைப்பத்தி, s. A gallery in such a house or on a fane. திருமானகரம், s. The heaven of Vishnu, வைகுந்தம்; [ex திருமால்.] திருமுகம், s. A divine face, divine presence, கடவுள்சந்நிதானம். 2. Presence of a great person, பெரியோர்சமூகம். 3. An epistle or edict from a superior to an inferior, சீமுகம். 4. An epistle, நிருபம். திருமுருகாற்றுப்படை, s. A poem. See ஆற்றுப்படை. திருமுழுக்கு, v. noun. The bathing of பார்வதி, under whatever name for purification, திருஅபிஷேகம். 2. Bathing by women with fasting in honor of பார்வதி, ten days in December. திருமுறை, s. A class of sacred writings, odes, &c., திருவாசகம். திருமுற்றம், s. An open space for performing equestrain exercises, கோயிற் சந்நிதி. 2. Temples or sacred places of Vishnu, கோயில். 3. A horse race, course, hippodrome, குதிரைவையாளிவீதி. திருமுன்--திருமுன்பு, s. Divine presence, தேவசன்னிதானம். 2. Presence of a king or other great persons, பெரியோர் சன்னிதானம். திருமெழுக்கு, v. noun. Smearing the floor of a temple and adjacent parts with cow-dung, கோயில்மெழுகுகை. திருமேனி, s. A divine body, form, shape, &c., the person of a deity or saint, திவ்வியதேகம். 2. In some connections, the idol of a temple as a form of the God, விக்கிரகம்.--Note. All forms of deity or nature belong to the female energy. 3. Any ear-jewel worn by females, ஓராபரணம். 4. A plant, குப்பை மேனி, Acalypha, L. திருமேனிகன்றப்பிரம்படிகொண்டசிவனார்...... Siva who was beaten with a ratan so that his divine body was bruised. திருவடி, s. Divine feet, feet of a deity, கடவுளடி. 2. Saints or great one's feet, குருபாதம். திருவடிதீட்சை, s. The guru's placing his feet on the head of the disciple, as one of the modes of dispelling his sin. திருவடிப்பாதுகை, s. The sandals of a great or sacred person. திருவணை, s. Adam's bridge between Ramisseram and Ceylon, சேது; [ex அ ணை.] திருவண்ணாமலை, s. A sacred mountain, as அருணாசலம். திருவமுது, s. Boiled rice presented to a deity, idol or a great person, தெய்வ உணவு; [ex அமுது.] திருவமுதுசெய்ய--திருவமுதுபண்ண, inf. To cook for the idol, or a great person. திருவருட்பயன், s. A treatise in praise of Siva, ஓர்நூல். திருவலகு, s. A besom. See அலகு. திருவல்லிக்கேணி, s. A place sacred to Vishnu in the suburbs of Madras, Triplicane. திருவள்ளுவர், s. The celebrated author of the Cural, குறளாசிரியர். 2. His work, the Cural, குறள். திருவற்றவன்--திருவில்லான், s. An unfortunate person, not prosperous. திருவனந்தபுரம், s. A town on the Malabar coast sacred to Vishnu, Trivandrum. திருவாக்கு, s. The word, declaration or order of a deity, saint, guru, king or other great person; an oracle. திருவாக்குக்கெதிர்வாக்குண்டோ.... Is the word of a high personage to be controverted? திருவாசகம், s. A poem by மாணிக்க வாசகர். திருவாசல்--திருவாயில், s. The gates or door-ways of a temple, including all the openings between the worshipper and the idol, ஆலயவாயில். 2. [prov.] A rest-house built from religious motives, மடம். திருவாசி--திருவாசிகை, s. (com. திரு வாட்சி.) The arch or bow over the head of an idol, of metal, wood, &c., or in painting; or an ornamented arch under which any thing sacred is carried, பிரபை. திருவாடுதண்டு--திருவாழித்தண்டு, s. [prov.] Poles on which an idol is carried in procession, விக்கிரகபீடத்தைக் காவுமரம். திருவாட்சி, s. See திருவாசி. திருவாதிரை, s. The sixth lunar asterism, ஆதிரை. திருவாத்தி, s. A flower tree sacred to Siva. See ஆத்தி. திருவாபரணம், s. The jewels of an idol, தெய்வாபரணம். திருவாய், s. Word, declaration, command, &c., of a deity, saint, guru, king, &c., தெய்வவாக்கு. திருவாய்மலர, inf. To utter, to declare, to speak, as divine person. திருவாய்மொழி, s. A book of note containing praises to Vishnu, ஆழ்வார்பா டல். திருவாரூர், s. A town in the Tanjore district sacred to Siva. திருவாவினன்குடி, s. The mountain town of Parlany, பழனி, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, முருகர்ஸ்தலம். திருவாழ்ங்கோடு--திருவான்கோடு, s. Travancore, a town and country at the S. W. extremity of southern India, ஓரூர். திருவாளன், s. A rich, prosperous man, செல்வன்; [ex ஆளன். திருவானைக்கா, s. A sacred place, near Trichinopoly, ஓர்ஸ்தலம். திருவிருந்து, s. A divine feast; used for the Lord's Supper, திவ்வியவிருந்து. திருவிலி, s. An unfortunate or poor person, தரித்திரி. 2. A widow or one who has lost her beauty, கைம்பெண்; [ex இலி.] திருவிழா, s. A temple festival, உற் சவம். 2. A temple procession. திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட, inf. To celebrate a festival. திருவிளக்கு, s. The lighted lamp of a temple, or as placed before a holy person, கோயிற்றீபம். 2. A lighted lamp as representing a god. திருவிளையாடல், v. noun. Sports of the deity, commonly of a wonderful, or miraculous character, தெய்வவிளையாட்டு. 2. A book treating on the sixty-four wonderful sports of Siva at Madura. அறுபத்துநாலுதிருவிளையாடல். The sixty-four sacred sports of Siva at Madura. திருவிளையாட்டு, v. noun. The wonderful sports of a deity, தெய்வலீலை. 2. [in burlesque.] Tricks, roguishness, frolics, பாடி. திருவுந்தியார், s. A section of திருவா சகம், composed by மாணிக்கவாசகர், Manikavasakar, திருவாசகத்தோருறுப்பு. திருவுளம்--திருவுள்ளம், s. The will of a god, a king, a guru, &c., [ex உளம், உள்ளம், mind.] 2. (fig.) The Supreme Being, கடவுள். திருவுளங்கொள்ள, inf. To approve, in case of a deity, or holy person; to deign, to be pleased. சுவாமிஅப்படியேதிருவுளங்கொண்டிருக்கிருக்கிறார்.... God is pleased to have it so. திருவுளச்சீட்டு, s. A lot cast or drawn. திருவுளச்செயல், s. Providential occurrence, providence. திருவுளமத்தியஸ்தம், s. Appeal to the deity. திருவுளமறிய, inf. To be witness--as the Supreme Being; used only in some form of the verb. திருவுளமறியச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I say it, God being witness. திருவுளம்பற்ற, inf. To speak, said of a deity or great person; to condescend to speak. திருவுளம்வைத்தல், v. noun. A deity, a guru, &c., exercising grace, deigning, vouchsafing. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A female ornament of solid gold bearing the figure of Lukshmi, worn on the forehead, நுதன்மே லணி. See உத்தி. திருவூசல்--திருவூஞ்சல், s. A swing for the idol, used on the last day of the annual festival, and on some other special occasions; a kind of cot, தேவவூச லாட்டு. திருவூஞ்சலாட, inf. To swing the idol. திருவேங்கடம், s. A place sacred to Vishnu, திருப்பதி. See திசை. திருவேடம், s. Sacred dress of siva, or of his followers, such as red cloths, sacred beads, &c. 2. Ear-rings made of gold or copper worn by the பண்டாரம், the தம்பிரான், &c., சிவனடியார்காதணி. திருவேடம்பூண, inf. To wear the distinguishing marks of the Saiva sect. திருவேரகம், s. Trivaraka near Pondichery, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, குமரன்ஸ்தலம். திருவொற்றாடை, s. Cloth for wiping the body of the idol after bathing, or anointing it, விக்கிரகங்களையொற்றுஞ்சீலை. திருவொற்றியூர், s. A place sacred to Siva, ஓர்சிவஸ்தலம். திருவோணம், s. The twenty-second lunar asterism, containing three stars in the neck of the eagle, ஓணம். திருவோலக்கம், s. The assembly in the temple before an idol. See ஓலக்கம். 5)

pali (p. 301) s. Sacrifice of an animal, regarded as food for a ferocious deity, either propitiatory or to obtain favors. 2. A sacrificial animal or offering, பலமிருகம். 3. Boiled rice or other food, as an oblation presented to the guardians of the cardinal points. See சுற்றுப்பலி. 4. Boiled rice cast as an offering to crows, in reference to the manes, and the planet Saturn, சோற்றுப்பலி. 5. Boiled rice, சோறு. 6. Boiled rice given to mendicants, alms in general, பிச்சை. 7. Offerings of flowers, &c., in the worship of the temple, the puja, பூசை 8. Ashes, சாம்பல். 9. Calx, lime, நீறு. 1 [in mythol.] Mahabali, sovereign of Mahabalipura, ticked out of the dominion he had obtained over earth and heaven, by Vishnu, in the வாமனம், or dwarf incarnation, and left, in consideration of his merits, the sovereignty of the infernal regions, ஓர்சக்கிரவர் த்தி. W. p. 6 BALL.--Note.. The annual lamp lighting in November is in reference to him. 11. Food of the gods, &c., derived from sacrifices, oblations, தேவரு ணவு. 12 A tree laden with fruit, காய்த்தி ருந்தமரம். (சது.) 13. A crow, காகம். பலிகொடுக்க--பலியிட--பலிபோட, inf. To sacrifice a victim, present offerings to a deity. 2. To kill. பலிசெலுத்த, inf. To offer sacrifice. பலிச்சக்கிரவர்த்தி, s. The sovereign Bali, commonly மகாபலி. See பலி. பலிதானம், s. Offering of sacrifices, alms giving, பலிதருகை. பலிபீடம், s. An altar. பலிபுட்டம், s. A crow as nourished by fragments of food, காக்கை. Compare பரபுட் டம், அன்னியபுட்டம். பலியூட்ட, inf. [v. noun. பலியூட்டு.] To sacrifice to a deity. 2. To feed crows, &c., with rice, as representing some deity. பலியெடுக்க, inf. To prey on the life of a person, or animal--as a demon, supposed to happen through exposure in a crossway, at midday, midnight, &c. பலியேற்க, inf. To receive a sacrifice, an offering, &c., with pleasure, as a deity. 56)
புராணம்
purāṇam (p. 325) s. Antiquity, பழமை. 2. Ancient story; a purana, a legendary tale containing accounts of gods, heroes, Rishis, &c., பழங்கதை. (c.) புராணம், 18. The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read.
