aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. ōṭm (p. 84) s. A boat, a ferry-boat, பட கு. 2. A raft, a float, a vessel of any kind, மிதவை. ஓடங்கடந்தாலோடக்காரனுக்கோர்சொட்டு. A cuff to the boatman for having ferried one over the river. ஓடத்தவக்கமாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They are retarded by not getting a boat. ஓடம்வண்டியிலேறும் வண்டியோடத்திலேறும். . . A carriage may be conveyed in a boat, and a boat may be conveyed in a carriage; i. e. prosperity is not permanent. இரண்டோடத்திற்கால்வைத்தவனைப்போலிருக்கிறா ன். He is like one who stands on two boats; i. e. one attached to two interests. ஓடக்காரன், s. A boat-man, a ferry-man, நாவாயோட்டுவோன். ஓடக்கூலி, s. Ferriage, the fare paid for conveyance at a ferry. ஓடக்கோல், s. A boatman's pole. ஓடம்விட, inf. Fortification, protection, defence, அரண். 16. The side of a mountain, மலைப்பக்கம். எல்லாருமொருகட்டாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They have all plotted together. பெண்சாதிகாற்கட்டுப்பிள்ளைவாய்க்கட்டு. A wife shackles the feet, and a child stops the mouth; i. e. a married man with a family can neither go, nor eat as he pleases. அவன்என்கட்டுக்குள்ளேநிற்கிறஆளல்ல. He is not subject to my influence--he does not listen to my advice, &c. கட்டழகு, s. Great beauty, பேரழ கு. 2. Ornament, அலங்காரம். கட்டழல், s. A vehement fire. கட்டாடி, s. [prov.] A person temporarily possessed for the purpose of uttering oracles or கட்டு, a species of divination inferior to சன்னதம், குறிசொல்வோ ன். 2. A washerman in respect, considered as a diviner; many of this caste having been celebrated in this character, வண்ணான். 3. A chief of the washer tribe, வண்ணார்தலைவன். கட்டாண்மை, s. Tender age, being very young. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A young lad. கட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. To exceed the limits, banks, &c.; violate established rules, positive injunctions, &c. கட்டுக்கடங்காதது, appel. n. That which is unrestrainable, unmanageable, ungovernable. கட்டுக்கட்ட, s. To tie up a pack, &c., மூட்டைகட்ட. 2. To fabricate, invent a fiction, a slander, பொய்க்கதைகட்ட. 3. To tie cloths to a boil in applying medicine, பருவுக்குமருந்துகட்ட. கட்டுக்கதை--கட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fable, a fiction, mythological tales. கட்டுக்கரப்பான், s. Eruption on a child. கட்டுக்கலியாணம், s. A very strict guard, close custody--applied to the protection of girls arrived at the age of puberty, &c., great care, great strictness, கட்டானகாவல். கட்டுங்காவலுமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in close confinement. கட்டுக்கிடை--கட்டுக்கிடையன், s. Cloth or other goods lying long unsold, நாட்பட்டசரக்கு. கட்டுக்குத்தகை, s. A contract or lease of land for many years together, a contract for a whole dhoney without reference to the number of trips, the weight of the cargo, &c. கட்டுக்கூட்டு, s. [prov.] A fabrication, a forgery, a fiction, a fable, கட் டுக்கதை. 2. An intertexture of letters, a cipher, மாற்றியெழுதப்பட்டது. கட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. To consult a diviner. கட்டுக்கொடி, s. A tether, a rope stretched along the ground to which cattle, goats, &c., are tied by the leg in a row at night, ஆடுமாடுகட்டுங்கயிறு. கட்டுக்கொதித்தல், v. noun. Making a large breach--as a river in its banks, the sea in the shore --as in the breaking up at the universal deluge. கட்டுண்ணல், v. noun. Being bound, &c., கட்டப்படுதல். கட்டுண்ணி, s. One who has been frequently bound. கட்டுத்தளர, inf. To grow slack --as a tie; to be loose--as a bale, &c. கட்டுத்தறி, s. A post to which an elephant may be tied, யானைமுதலியன கட்டுங்கம்பம். கட்டுத்திரவியம், s. [prov.] Treasure bound up in one's cloth, &c., பொற்கிழி. கட்டுத்திரள, inf. [prop. கட்டிதிர ள.] To form or swell--as a tumor. கட்டுத்தையல், s. A kind of firm sewing. கட்டுத்தோணி--கட்டுப்படகு, s. A dhoney or vessel of which the seams are sewed together. கட்டுப்பட, inf. To yield to, to submit, be influenced by, be brought under the power of, be overcome by, கட் டுக்குள்ளடங்க. 2. To be bound by spells or otherwise restrained, மந்திரமுதலியவற் றாற்கட்டுப்பட. 3. To be constipated--as the system; to be obstructed--as waters, as humors in the system, blood, urine, menstruation, &c., தடைப்பட. ஒருமயிரினாலேகட்டுப்படுவான். He may be bound by a single hair; i. e. he will be easily persuaded or prevailed upon. கட்டுப்படுத்த, inf. To restrain, confine, subdue, subordinate, control, restrict, subject, கட்டுக்குளடக்க. கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To stop, prevent. கட்டுப்பாடு, s. Mutual obedience or harmony--as among relations, பந்துக் கட்டு. 2. Self-restraint, thraldom, கட்டுப் படுகை. 3. League, band, conspiracy, faction, confederacy, கட்சி. 4. Compact, social bond or union, relative, national, religious or other tie, bond, &c., இணக் கம். கட்டுப்பாடுபண்ண, inf. To bring under, or keep in order. கட்டுப்பானை, s. A float or raft constructed by joining a number of earthen pots together. கட்டுப்பிடித்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To ascertain the origin and cure of a disease by a magical exercise--a sort of divination. கட்டுப்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] Ornaments for the body, jewels, ஆபரணம். கட்டுப்பெட்டி, s. A float or raft, a catamaran, மிதவை. கட்டுமாமரம், s. An engrafted large kind of mango tree, ஓர்வகைமாமரம்--also called ஒட்டுமாமரம். கட்டுமாம்பழம், s. A mango fruit which, when it matures, is protected with a case. எட்டியிலேகட்டுமரம்பழமுண்டாமோ. Will the bitter poisonous எட்டி tree produce mangos? கட்டுமுகனை, s. You may oppose yourself to a fire-brand, but not to the planet Venus --said in reference to going East-ward when Venus is the morning star or Westward when it is the evening star. குடியிருந்தவீட்டிலேகொள்ளிவைக்கிறவன். An incendiary who sets fire to a house where he has received hospitality, i. e., one who returns evil for good. கொள்ளிகுடம்--கொள்ளியுங்குடமும், s. The fire-brand and water-pot which are carried by the chief mourner three times round the funeral pile previous to its being ignited. கொள்ளிக்கண்ணன், s. A fierce-eyed man. 2. One whose looks are blighting. 3. [prov.] A horse or bull with red eyes, deemed ominous. கொள்ளிக்கரப்பன், s. A kind of blain in children resembling scars from burning. See எறும்பு. கொள்ளிசொருகுதல், v. noun. [prov.] To insert a brand in the roof of a house --as an incendiary. 2. To cause or bring about another's ruin. கொள்ளித்தேள், s. [prov.] A scorpion whose sting is very severe, ஓர்தேள். கொள்ளிவட்டம், s. A circle described in the air with a fire-brand by boys in play (p.) கொள்ளிவாய்ச்சர்ப்பம்--கொள்ளிவாய் விரியன், s. [in carpentry.] To plane the wood smoothly. சுத்தப்பிரதி, s. A fair copy. (c.) சுத்தபூமி, s. Cleared land. (p.) சுத்தப்படுத்த--சுத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To cleanse, to clear away, make clean. சுத்தப்பிழை, s. Complete error. (c.) சுத்தப்பொய், s. A downright lie. (c.) சுத்தமத்தளம், s. A superior kind of மத்தளம். சுத்தமனம், s. A frank, sincere mind, கபடமின்மை. 2. A pure mind. சுத்தமாயை, s. Pure spiritual Maya. See மாயை. சுத்தமாய், adv. Wholly, entirely, utterly, absolutely. 2. At all, in the least. (c.) இன்றைக்கெனக்குச்சுத்தமாச்சாப்பாட்டுக்கில்லை. I am, to day, entirely destitute of food. சுத்தமார்க்கம், s. Pure conduct, spotless morality. 2. Sincere piety. 3. The true system of religion. சுத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To purity, either physically or ceremonially; to cleanse, to refine. 2. [in astron.] To equate or correct. சுத்தம்பேச, inf. [prov.] To speak boastingly of one's character, parentage, connexions, &c. சுத்தவநியாயம், s. A gross injustice. (c.) சுத்தவாசனை, s. Pure fragrance. 2. (fig.) A pure state of the soul--oppo. to மலினவாசனை. சுத்தவாளர், s. [improp.] Pure persons. 2. (Rom. usage.) Saints, அர்ச்சியசிஷ்டர். சுத்தவாளி, s. A person proved innocent in a court of justice, not guilty-oppo. to குற்றவாளி. (c.) 2. A holy person. சுத்தவிக்கேபம்--சுத்தவிட்சேபம், s. [in astron.] The true celestial latitude. See புடலிக்கேபம். சுத்தவித்தை, s. [in Agam.] A preponderance of spiritual knowledge above a tendency to works. See சிவதத்துவம். சுத்தக்கட்டிவெள்ளி--சொக்கவெள்ளிக் கட்டி, s. A lump of pure silver. (c.) சுத்தவீரம், s. True valor, heroism. (c.) சுத்தவீரர், s. (sing. சுத்தவீரன்.) True heroes. சுத்தவுபவாசம், s. Absolute fasting, total abstinence during a fast. சுத்தவெள்ளை, s. Pure white. 2. That which is entirely white. (c.) சுத்தன், s. A pure person, a sincere person, பரிசுத்தன். (c.) 2. One ripe for liberation from births, a soul in the third, or highest stage, next to absorption, நின்மலன். 3. Siva, அரன். 4. Brahma, ஐயன். 5. Argha, அருகன். 6. Vishnu, அரி. கைச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanness of hands or freedom from bribery. (c.) மெய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanliness of body. (c.) மனச்சுத்தம், s. Mental purity. (c.) வாய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Veracity, or cleanness of mouth. (c.) சுத்தாங்கம், s. Pureness, cleanness, purity, sanctity, சுத்தம். 2. Entireness, absoluteness, முழுமை; [ex அங்கம்.] (c.) சுத்தாங்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is entirely gone. 2. It is quite clean. சுத்தாங்கன், s. A pure person, one without moral stain. (Colloq.) சுத்தாத்துமா, s. A person of superior, spiritual knowledge. 2. One of spotless, irreproachable character. 3. col (p. 212) --சொல்லு, கிறேன், சொன்னேன், வேன், சொல்ல, v. a. To say, speak, tell, mention, utter, express, பேச. 2. To quote, cite, recite, repeat, எடுத்துச் சொல்ல. 3. To dictate, command, assert, declare, உறுதிசொல்ல. 4. To versify, make poetry, பாட. 5. To describe, விரித்துச்சொல்ல. 6. To give information, to notify, புத்தி சொல்ல. 7. To bid, invite, வரச்சொல்ல. 8. To harranque, declaim, பிரசங்கஞ்செய்ய.-Note. The ancient form of the past is சொல்லியது, past verbal. சொல்லிச்செய்வார்நல்லோர், சொல்லாமற்செய்வார் பெரியோர், சொல்லியுஞ்செய்யாரசடர். Those who say and do, are good, those who say not and do, great; but those who say and do not, are bad. (Proverb.) சொல்லத்தக்கவிசேஷஞ்சொல்லு. Say what is proper. சொல்லப்படாதகாரியம். A tattler, as கோட்சொல்லி--பொய்சொல்லி--எ ரிசொல்லி--வெடுவெடுத்தசொல்லி, one who slanders, one who tells lies, &c. சொல்லிக்காட்ட, inf. To describe. define, explain. 2. To mention and dwell on--as one's own good actions. சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To teach, to explain. 2. To put words in one's mouth, to direct one what to say. 3. To advise. 4. To inform against, to lodge a complaint. இவனுக்குப்பாடஞ்சொல்லிக்கொடு....Teach him the lesson. சொல்லிக்கொள்ள, inf. To give a promise to the creditor to pay another's debt. 2.
