Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. uẕu (p. 67) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், உழ, v. a. To plough, ஏருழ. 2. [with the impersonal terminations.] To root up--as pigs, நிலத்தைக்கிளைக்க. பன்றிநிலத்தையெல்லாமுழுதுபோட்டது. The hogs have ploughed up all the field. உழக்கோல், s. A goad used to drive oxen when ploughing. உழத்தி, s. (plu. உழத்தியர்.) A female of the ploughman caste. See உழவர். உழத்திப்பாட்டு, s. A kind of poem. See பள்ளு. உழுதகாடு, s. A ploughed highland. உழுதநிலம், s. Ploughed land. உழுதுண்போர், s. Those who cultivate fields belonging to others and subsist upon a share of the produce. 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். உழுதுண்டுவாழ்வாரேவாழ்வார்மற்றெல்லாந்தொ ழுதுண்டுபின்செல்பவர். Those who till the ground enjoy plenty and happiness, the rest being followers and servants of the great depend on their assistance. (குறள்.) தொழுதூண்சுவையிலுழுதூணினிது. To cultivate ground and live by it is more satisfactory than to procure maintenance from others by serving them. உழுதுபுழுதியாக்க, inf. To plough and harrow, to waste. உழுபடை, s. A plough, கலப்பை; [ex படை, implements.] உழுவளைப்பு, s. The turnings in ploughing, தொழுப்பு. உழவு, v. noun. Ploughing, உழு கை. 2. (fig.) (p.) Agriculture, husbandry, tillage, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவின்மிகுத்தஊதியமில்லை. There is no occupation which yields greater profit than agriculture. உழவடைக்க, inf. To make over to another a piece of land for purposes of cultivation. உழவர்--உழவோர், s. Ploughmen, cultivators, agriculturists, husbandmen, inhabitants of agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். 2. A horse whip, குதிரைச்சம்மட்டி. உழவுகோல்கொண்டூர்ந்தனன். He drove (the horse) with a whip. உழவுசால், s. A furrow, படைச் சால். உழவுசெய்ய, inf. To plough, practise agriculture, உழ. உழவுத்தொழில், s. ēkāntam (p. 77) s. A solitary place, தனி த்திருக்குமிடம். 2. Solitude, loneliness, retirement, தனிமை. 3. ēẕu (p. 79) . Seven, septuple, seven fold, ஓரெண்.--Note. Seven is considered a special or sacred number. As a prefix it is often எழு or ஏழ். எழுகடல்--ஏழ்கடல், s. The seven oceans. எழுநிலைக்கோபுரம், s. A tower seven stories high. எழுநிலைமாடம், s. A palace seven stories high, lit. with seven door frames one above another. எழுபிறப்பு--ஏழ்பவம்--ஏழ்பிறப் பு, s. The seven different living beings, viz.: 1. தேவர், supernals. 2. மக்கள், men. 3. விலங்கு, beasts. 4. பறவை, birds. 5. ஊர்வன, reptiles. 6. நீர்வாழ்வன, aquatic creatures. 7. தாவரம், immovable things --as trees, plants. ஏழடிபின்போக, inf. To accompany a poet or learned person seven steps on his departure. ஏழத்தனை. Seven-fold. ஏழரை--எழரையாண்டுச்சனி, s. The period of saturn's evil influence being seven-and-half years. See மங்கு சனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணசனி. ஏழனுருபு, s. The seventh case or local ablative, ஏழாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. ஏழாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage-shed when planted on the seventh day before the wedding, a lucky day being chosen. ஏழுகோணம், s. A heptagon, septangular figure. ஏழுதீவு, s. The seven continents. ஏழுபருவம், s. The seven stages of life. See பருவம். ஏழுலகம், s. The seven worlds, including the earth and six supernal worlds. ஏழேழு, s. Seven times seven. 2. ōmpu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓம்பினேன், வேன், ஓ ம்ப, v. a. To protect, guard, defend, save, காக்க. 2. To preserve, keep, take care of, பாதுகாக்க. 3. To keep off, ward off, dispel, cease from, ஒழிய. 4. To cherish, nourish, maintain, support, to cause to increase, வளர்க்க. பரிந்தோம்பிக்காக்கவொழுக்கந்தெரிந்தோம்பித்தேரி னுமஃதேதுணை. Desire and maintain with great care the conduct proper to your caste, which, how much soever the virtues are examined and understood, and how much soever the senses are guarded, is alone the convoy of the soul. (குறள்.) அஞ்சலோம்பென்றார். He said, away with your fears. (குறள்.) வலியார்மேன்மாறேற்றலோம்புக. Let opposition to those more powerful than yourself cease. (குறள்.) விலக்கியவோம்பி. Avoiding whatever is prohibited by the shasters-- (நீதிநெறி.) தாங்கற்றனவோம்பாது. Not retaining in memory what they have learnt--(நீதிநெறி.) விருந்தோம்ப, inf. kttu (p. 92) கிறேன், கத்தினேன், வேன், கத்த, v. n. To cry with a harsh continued noise, to scream, squall--as an infant, கூவ. 2. To croak--as a frog; to caw--as a crow; to chuck--as a partridge; to scream, screach or make a harsh sound--as some birds, &c.; to chatter--as monkeys in fear, to yelp--as young dogs; to growl--as a bear; to bray--as an ass; to chuck--as young birds; to bleat--as calves; to make a reiterative sound--as some snakes, விலங் குபறவைமுதலியகத்த. 3. To chatter, to babble, to jabber, to talk in vain, பிதற்ற. 4. To roar, முழங்க. கத்திக்கத்தித்தொண்டையடைத்துப்போயிற்று. I am grown hoarse by talking so much. நாய்க்குப்பயந்துகுரங்குகத்துகிறது. The monkey chatters for fear of the dog. காக்கைகத்துகின்றது. The crow caws. அவன்கழுதைபோலேகத்துகிறான். He brays like an ass. அணில்கத்துகிறபடியால்சமீபத்திலேபாம்பிருக்கவே ண்டும். The screaching of the squirrels indicates the proximity of a snake. மாரித்தவளைபோலேயேன்கத்துகிறாய். Why do you croak like a frog in the rainy season? --said of one who talks too much, or importunes unceasingly. கத்து, v. noun. Crying, bawling, கூப்பிடுகை. 2. Chattering, unmeaning or idle talk, vain babbling, nonsense, mere declamation, பிதற்றுகை.--Note. Exalted devotees use this term concerning the opinions, &c., of other sects or of those of the same sects, but inferior to themselves. சமயக்கத்து, s. The arguments or wrangling of religious disputants. 2. Religious tenets exclusive of the sublimer or experimental parts. In both meanings the usage is sarcastic, spoken by opponents or by those who have arrived at an exalted degree. பொய்ந்நூலாம்அச்சமயக்கத்தினாராதரிக்கத்தெய்வ ங்கள்வைச்சமயக்கத்தினார்வாழ்வு. (Tiruvancadum) is the residence of Vishnu who appointed various gods to please wrangling fanatics. (திருவேங்.) வீண்கத்து, s. Vain, insignificant words, prating. 22) *

To understand a book, science, &c., thoroughly. கரைகண்டவன், s. One who is skilled in business. கரைகாணாதது, appel. noun. That which is inexplorable, incomprehensible, unascertainable. கரைகாணாப்பேரொளி, s. The infinitely great light; i. e. God. கரைக்கல்லோலம், s. The sponge, கடற்பாசி. கரைக்காற்று, s. Breeze on the sea-shore, long-shore wind. கரைக்கேற்றபங்கு--கரைக்கேற்ற வீதம்--கரைக்கொத்தவிழுக்காடு, s. Land apportioned to the respective householders in a village. கரைதுறை, s. A landing place. 2. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis.
