cantiraṉ (p. 159) s. Chandra, the moon as a planet or deity, திங்கள். (c.) 2. [in combination.] A pre-eminent or dignified personage--as இராமச்சந்திரன். சந்திரனைப்பார்த்துநாய்குலைத்தாற்போல. As if the dog had barked at the moon, i. e., mere chatter to no purpose. சந்திரகணம், s. One of the four auspicious feet with which to begin a poem --consisting of one நிரை and two நேர். See கணம். The shadow of a gnomon or of a person's length on the ground for determining the hour of the day, நாழிகையறியுஞ்சா யை. (c.) 4. civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Dha'ran'a.) நவதாரணை, The nine classes of things; existing or established by art; 1. நாமதாரணை, names appellations. 2. வச் சிரதாரணை,(probably) terms of architecture. 3. மாயாதாரணை, things formed by மாயை, as words, appearance of things created. 4. சித்திரதாரணை, paintings or sculpture. 5. செய்யுட்டாரணை, poems, poetry, compositions. 6. நிறை வு குறைவாகிய எண்பொருட்டாரணை, perhaps abstract numbers. 7. சத்ததாரணை, contrivance for the formation or modulation of sounds, as bells, musical instruments. 8. வஸ்துதாரணை, productions of art in general. 9. சதுரங்கதாரணை, a complete army of four kinds of forces. (See சதுரங்கம்.) II. The nine forms of worship practised by the Saiva Yogis. Their classification is: 1. நாமதாரணை, the worship of the Omnipresent God in the form of an image, to which is given his name. அளவிடப்படாதபிர மத்தைநாமத்தினால்வரையறைப்படுத்தல். 2. மாயாதா ரணை, worshipping the Supreme Being, who is unlimited, and without form, by the use of he formule, Maha Vakya (the great speech), accompanied by the entire renunciation of the world. This accords with the practice of the Adwita class of Vedantists, விகாரங்களில்லாதபாமரன் மாவினிடத்தில்புனைந்துரைக்கப்பட்ட பிரபஞ்சவியா பாரமாயையைத்துறப்பதற்குக்கருவியானமகாவாக்கியத் தைப்பொளுணர்ச்சியோடுஉச்சரித்தல். 3. பேததார ணை, an exercise of the Yogi to restrain his bodily affections, by uniting the vital air in the heart, பிராணன், in the podex, அபானன், in the body generally, வியானன், and in the throat, உதானன், these four, with that in the navel, சமானன்; and thus with the inward recital of the mystic O'm, to alter the position of his heart, supposed to be like a lotus flower with eight petals hanging downwards, பலமுறைஇயமாதிகள்செய்து, பிராணன், அபாணன், வியானன், உதானன் என்கிறவாயுக் களைச்சமானவா யுவுடனேசேர்த்து, கீழ்முகமாயிருக்கிற உள்ளக்கமலத் தைமேல்முகமாக்குகை, 4. மந்திரதாரணை, worshipping Siva by the famous five lettered incantation, நமசிவாய--rejecting the mystic O'm--ascribing to him the supremacy, and recognizing the universe as only the manifestation of Siva. Such as do this reject the primitive system, and believe in an all pervading soul of the universe, called Siva, எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் அதிஷ் டானமாய்எவையுமாகிறவன்சிவனேயென்று, பௌ ராணிகமந்திரங்களால்சிவத்தியானஞ்செய்தல். 5. சது ரங்கதாரணை, meditating on the Supreme Being, as one who having purified himself, and suspended his breath, unites the faculties of the mind with the four constituents of the body--earth, water, fire and wind--in the cavity of the crown of the head. This is done when the reason represented by fire; reflection by the wind; the will by water, are joined with resolution or passion, represented by earth, and all co-operate to fix the mind in the air, the seat of Brahma, காய சோதனம்பண்ணுகிறவன் நிலம், நீர், தீ, கால் என் னுஞ்சதுரங்கமாகிய அகங்காரசித்த புத்திமனசென்கிற வைகளைமுறையாக அடக்கி, பின்பு கால்வடிவானம னசை ஆகாயமாகியபிரமத்தானத்தில் சேரும்படிதியா னித்தல். 6. சத்ததாரணை, continual meditation of an ascetic in an immoveable posture, uttering the sounds of அ, உ, ம், or O'm. which represent the deity. This is done while closing the eyes and restraining all the external senses. By the mystic syllable, the வாதநாடி pulse is said to be purified, and its pulsation may be beard. (See கும் பகம்.) பிரமத்தையுணர்த்துகிற பிரணவத்தைத்தியான தாரணசமாதிகளால்அடைந்து, புறக்காணச்செய்கை யற்று, கும்பகத்தானமானவாதநாடியைச்சுத்திபண் ணி, நாதானுசந்தானத்தையடைதல். 7. வஸ்துதார ணை, the mental perception of Brahm, obtained by the firm power of thought, separated from external things, which unites the reason with the will, These combined, produce action or passion, Passion, reason and will are condensed in reflection, by which Brahm is perceived, பிறபொருளையடையாமல்அசைவற்றிருக்கிற மனமானதுபுத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரங்கள்மூன்றையு முறையேசேர்த்துக்கொண்டபின், அம்மனத்தால்பிரம த்தைத்தரித்தல். 8. வச்சிரதாரணை, rendering homage to Siva only in the Lingam. rejecting the lower positions which represent Brahma and Vishnu; and renouncing passion, and the corporeal senses, contemplating the divine essence with a fixed mind, பிரமன்வடிவாகியபீடத் தையும், திருமால்வடிவாகியவிவரத்தையும்நீக்கி, இலி ங்கத்தைமாத்திரம்பூசித்தல்என்றால்--அகங்காரத்தை யுஞ்சீவத்துவத்தையும்துறந்து, பரத்துவத்தையேதியா னித்தலாம், 9. சித்திரதாரணை, becoming ripe for absorption and approaching assimilation to the deity, by gaining a knowledge of the twenty-six properties of the body, the soul, and the Supreme Being (ஷட்விம்சகபாவம்). This is obtained by entirely forgetting the austerities practised, repeating continually the மகா வாக்கியம், solely contemplating the benefit to be derived, and then renouncing even that; the soul thus dominates over the immerging principle, arrives at a pure, spiritual knowledge and is merged in the Divinity, சத்தஉச்சரிப்பா லாகியமந்திரப்பிரயோகத்தைநீக்கி, பொருளையே ம னதில் அனுசந்தானம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஷட்விம் சகபாவத்தையடைந்து, பிராரப்தம் என்கிற கர்மபயன் களைமறந்து, சத்தார்த்தங்களையும்விட்டு, அறிவுமயமாயே இருத்தல். 32) *

tēmpu (p. 258) கிறேன், தேம்பினேன், வேன், தே ம்ப, v. n. To sob, cry, விம்மியழ. (c.) [ex Sa. Teva, to weep.] 2. To fade, wither, droop, வாட. 3. To grow thin, to be emaciated, attenuated, மெலிய. 4. To be wearied, fatigued, to faint, as சோம்பு, இளைக்க. தேம்பித்தேம்பியழ, inf. To cry and sob greatly. தேம்பல், v. noun. Fading, being faded, வாடல். 2. A faded flower, as கூம்பல், பழம்பூ. 22) *

niẕl (p. 277) s. Shade, shadow, சாயை. 2. Image or reflection in mirror, water, &c., விம்பம். 3. Type, representation, counterpart, முன்னடையாளம். 4. Appearance, phantom, வெறுந்தோற்றம். 5. (fig.) Protection, retreat, asylum, refuge, தஞ்சம். (c.) 6. Coolness, frigidity, குளிர்ச்சி. 7. Grace, favor, benignity, அருள். 8. Wealth, prosperity, affluence, செல்வம். 9. Light, radiance, splendor, ஒளி. 1. Disease, ailment, நோய். (சது.) 11. Justice, equity, நீதி. (பிங்.) நிழல்நல்லதுமுசிறுபொல்லாது. Shade is pleasant, the red ants (under it) unpleasant; i. e. the patronage of the great is good, those around are troublesome. நிழல்நிற்கிறதாபார். See whether there is any shadow; i. e. see whether the sun shines. ஒதுங்கநிழலில்லை. There is no shade to resort to. 2. There is no place of refuge. அண்டநிழலில்லை. There is no shade; i. e. no place of refuge. தன்னிழல்தன்காற்கீழ்வர--தன்னிழல்தன்னடிக்கு வர. When one's shade is under foot; i. e. when it is exactly noon. நிழலாட, inf. To be reflected as an image in water, a mirror, &c. நிழலாட்டம், s. v. noun. Any thing like a shadow, shade in painting, &c. 2. Typical representation, adumbration, 3. A mere phantom. நிழலிட, inf. To cast a shadow, to over--shadow, to shade. 2. To reflect objects, சாயைகாட்ட. நிழலுணக்க--நிழலுலர்்த்த, inf. To dry medicines in the shade. See உலர், v. நிழலொதுக்கு, s. A shady covert or retreat. நிழலோடுதல், v. noun. Lengthening of a shadow. நிழல்காத்தல், v. noun. Being shaded. நிழல்கொடுக்க, inf. To cast a shadow as நிழலிட. நிழல்செய்ய--நிழற்செய்ய, inf. To over-shadow. (p.) நிழல்நாவல், s. A plant. See நாவல். நிழல்பட--நிழல்விழ, inf. To fall as the shadow of a flying body, &c. நிழற்கீழ்ப்பயிர், s. Plants in the shade of trees. நிழற்சாய்ப்பு, s. A shady resort, as நிழ லொதுக்கு. நிழற்சரிவு--நிழற்சாய்வு, v. noun. Declining of a shadow. நிழற்பாடு, s. [prov.] Shade as injurious to plants, &c. நிழற்பாவை, s. Puppets the shade of which are cast on a curtain. குடைநிழல், s. Shadow of an umbrella. 2. (fig.) The protection of a government. See குடை. நிழலல்--நிழலுதல், v. noun. A bond given in return. 2. A copy of a bond. பிரதிட்டை--பிரதிஷ்டை, s. Consecration, dedication, by which a god is supposed to be brought into an image, ஆவாகனம். See பிராணப்பிரதிஷ்டை. (c.) 2. Five kinds of delusion, or evil, on the principles of Adwitas or followers of Sankaracharya. They are: 1. தமம், the tamasa disposition--darkness, or obscurity of mind; 2. மாயை, ideality, inherent evil, personified matter; 3. மோகம், depravity, error; 4. அவித்தை, ignorance, folly; 5. அநிர்தம், that which is without, or strange, opposed to God. அதோமாயை--அசுத்தமாயை, s. Subordinate or inferior illusion, or Maya. அதோமாயையிலிருந்துபிரகிருதிதோன்றும். The female principle in nature springs from the inferior Maya. சுத்தமாயை--மகாமாயை, s. Primitive or original Maya, as காரணமாயை. மாயாகாரியம், s. The effects of Maya, its various changes, and diversifications in nature. மாயாசங்கற்பம், s. Any remarkable effect of Maya by way of creation or destruction. மாயாசத்தி, s. A power, energy, or principle which contains the five kinds of மாயை, given above. See மாமாயை. மாயாசாலம்--மாயாசித்து, s. Dissimulation, treachery, imposture. மாயாதருமம், s. Transient or deceptive merit, பொய்ப்புண்ணியம். 2. Nature or peculiarity of Maya, மாயையின்றன்மை. மாயாதர்மம், 2. The two peculiarities of Maya are: 1. சங்கோசம், contracting; 2. விகாசம், expanding. மாயாதாரகம், s. That which has Maya for a principal cause. மாயாதாரணை, s. Things formed by Maya, the third of nine classes. See தாரணை. மாயாதேகம், s. A transitory body, நிலை யற்றசரீரம். மாயாதேவி, s. The mother of Buddha, புத்தன்றாய். மாயாதேவிசுதன், s. The son of Maya, Buddha. (சது.) மாயாபஞ்சகம், s. As மாயை, 5. மாயாபாசம், s. Being under the influence of Maya. மாயாபுரி, s. One of the seven famous towns. See புரி. 2. Brass, பித்தளை. மாயாப்பிரதிவிம்பர், s. [hon.] He whose glories, are reflected, in creation, &c., by means of Maya, மாயையாற்பிரதிபலிக்குமுருவு டையோர். (உபநி-124.) மாயாமலம், s. As மாயைமலம். மாயாரூபம், s. Feigned shapes, forms assumed, or caused by super-human powers. மாயாலட்சணம், s. The properties of Maya. They are five; 1. அசத்து, unreality; 2. சடம், matter; 3. அநித்தம், transientness; 4. துக்கம், distress; 5. கண்டம், division, a part. மாயாலீலை, s. Sportive illusions, as of Krishna, Siva, &c. See இலீலை. மாயாவல்லபம், s. The power or efficacy of Maya. மாயாவாதம், s. A religion whose doctrines are false, skepticism, ஓர்மதம். மாயாவாதி, s. Destroyer of Maya, and its evils. (பிரபுலிங்.) 2. One of the above religion, or sect; a skeptic. மயாவித்தை, s. Magic, as மாயவித்தை. மாயாவிமோசனம், s. Removal of Maya. மாயாவினோதம், s. Legerdemain, sportive deception, கண்கட்டுவித்தை. மாயைமலம், s. This last twenty are considered unfortunate, அதமவிம்சதி. See the words in loco. In books and inscriptions, the year of the Caliyuga, or of the era of Salivahana, is sometimes also given. இரண்டுவருஷகாலம். The space of two years. வருஷசங்கிரமம்--வருஷப்பிறப்பு, s. Beginning of a year. வருஷந்தோறும்--வருஷவாரி. Every year. வருஷகாலம், s. Time of rain, மாரி காலம். (ராமா. சஅ.) வருஷாந்தம்--வருஷாந்தரம். Yearly, year by year. வருஷாந்தரசங்கம்--வருஷாந்தரக்கூட்் டம், s.
