aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

aviẕ (p. 31) s. A single grain of boiled rice, ஓர்சோறு. (c.) வடித்தபானையிலோரவிழுங்கிடையாது. A single grain of rice will not be found in a well cleaned vessel. கலவுமிதின்றாலோரவிழ்தட்டாதா? If you eat twelve marcals of husks, will not one grain of rice touch (your teeth?) i. e. if you take much trouble, will you not derive some benefit? 11)

aviẕ (p. 31) --அவிழு, கிறது, அவிழ்ந்தது, அவிழும், அவிழ, v. n. To become loose, untied, unfastened as a knot, &c., கட்டவிழ. 2. (p.) To open, expand, &c., as a flower, மலர. முகையவிழ்கோதை. A garland of opening buds. கள்ளவிழ்சோலை. The honey-distilling flower-groves. 12)

aviẕ (p. 31) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To loosen, slacken, untie, unbind, unpack, unfasten, unsew, முடியவிழ்க்க. 2. To cause to open, as the sun opens flowers. Humming insects are also described by poets as opening the flowers. மலரச்செய்ய. 3. To solve an enigma, unriddle, explain a difficulty, விடுகதைவிடுவிக்க. அவன்காலால்முடிந்ததைக் கையாலவிழ்க்கக்கூடாது. What he has bound with his foot, none can unbind with their hands; i. e. he is a crafty man whose schemes no body, though ever so skilful, can defeat. 13) *

avukkvukkeṉl (p. 31) v. noun. Sounding as hawking, vomiting, &c., severely and in quick succession, ஒலிக்குறிப்பு. 2. Being eager, hasty, earnest, விரைதல். (c.) அவுக்கவுக்கென்றுதின்கிறான். He eats greedily, hastily, &c. அவு்ககவுக்கென்றுவாந்திக்கிறான். He is vomiting greatly. நாய் அவுக்கவுக்கென்று விழுகிறது. The dog attacks (us) barking eagerly. அவுக்கவுக்கென்று வேலைசெய்கிறான். He works with great diligence, or with eagerness, for his pay. அவுக்கவுக்கென்றோடுகிறான், He runs about his business with great eagerness. 15)

āṉai (p. 44) s. An elephant, யானை. 2. (M. Dic.) The அத்தி tree, Ficus racemosa. ஆனைகட்டுந்தறி--ஆனையணைதறி, s. A post to tie an elephant. ஆனைக்கண், s. Round, black spots in fruits, when they are over-ripe, or spoiled. ஆனைக்கண்படுதல்--ஆனைக்கண் வி ழுதல், v. noun. The appearing of spots, or defects in fruits. பலாப்பழமானைக்கண்பட்டுப் போயிற்று. The jack fruit has got a defect or flaw. ஆனைக்கதுப்பு, s. The frontal sinus of the elephant, from which secretion exudes when the animal is in rut. ஆனைக்களிமுளையான், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைக்கற்றலை, s. A fish, ஓர்மீன். ஆனைக்காயம்--ஆனைப்பெருங்கா யம், s. A kind of assaf&oe;tida given to elephants, &c. See பெருங்காயம். ஆனைக்கால், s. A disease--the elephantiasis or large leg, Cochin leg, வாதக்கால். 2. A big tube fixed on the walls or roofs, for rain-water to pass through, தண்ணீர்க்குழாய். (c.) ஆனைக்காவல், s. Watchers to defend a garden, a field, &c., against elephants. ஆனைக்கூடம், s. An elephant's stall, ஆனைகட்டுமிடம். ஆனைக்கொம்பு--ஆனைக்கோடு--ஆ னைத்தந்தம், s. An elephant's tusks. 2. Ivory. ஆனைக்கொம்பன், s. A kind of rice, ஓர்வகைநெல். 2. A species of plantain--as ஆனைவாழை. ஆனைக்கோடன்சுரை, s. A gourd whose fruit is compared to the elephant's tusks, and is used for a curry, the snake gourd, ஓர்வகைச்சுரை. [Trichosanthes anguina.] ஆனைசேனை, s. A great quantity, abundance, மிகுதி. ஆனைச்சப்பரம், s. A seat on an elephant--as அம்பாரி. ஆனைச்சிலந்தி, s. A kind of scabby disease. ஆனைச்சிரங்கு, s. A kind of itch in large blisters. ஆனைச்சீரகம், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைச்செவியடி, s. A pricklyleaved plant, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. The lower part of the elephant's ear. ஆனைத்தடிச்சல், s. A kind of creeping plant with acid juice--used in polishing brass, ஓர்படர்கொடி. ஆனைத்தடிப்பு, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைத்திசை, s. [in astrology.] North, வடக்கு. ஆனைத்திப்பிலி, s. Pericarps of Pothos officinalis, ஓர்வகைத்திப்பிலி. ஆனைத்தோட்டி, s. An elephant's hook or goad. ஆனைநெருஞ்சில், s. A low plant, a kind of spreading thistle--pricklyfruited Pedalium murex, ஓர்வகைநெருஞ்சில். ஆனைப்படுவன், s. A kind of scabby disease--as the அக்கி. ஆனைப்படை, s. An army of elephants. ஆனைப்பந்தி, s. An elephant's stall. 2. A row of elephants. ஆனைப்பாகன், s. An elephanteer, or one who tames or guides elephants. ஆனைப்பிச்சான், s. A plant, ஓர் பூண்டு. ஆனைப்பேன், s. An insect that lives in the brinjall plant, கத்தரிச்செடியிலு ண்டாகுமோர்பூச்சி. ஆனைமஞ்சள், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைமதம், s. An elephant's rut. ஆனைமத்தகம், s. An elephant's skull or part of the head, கும்பம். இ. A short letter, similar to I in English, ஓர்குற்றெழுத்து. 2. A demonstrative prefix, சுட்டெழுத்து--as இந்த, this. 3. A termination of the second person singular, முன்னிலையொருமைவிகுதி--as உண்டி, thou hast eaten. 4. An imperative second person singular, முன்னிலையேவலொருமைவிகுதி-as சொல்லுதி, say thou. 5. A feminine appellative termination, பெண்பால்விகுதி-as கூனி, a hump-backed woman. 6. A singular termination, common to the masc. and fem., உயர்திணையொருமைவிகுதி--as மானி, an honorable person--பாவி, a sinner. 7. A termination in the singular, common to each gender, இருதிணைமுக்கூற்றொருமைவிகுதி --as செவியிலி, a man, woman, or animal without ears. 8. An expletive inserted at pleasure, when the preceding word ends with any letter except ய், and the following word begins with ய், சாரியை--as காலியாது, from கால், foot and யாது, which. 9. A termination of some participles, வினையெச்சவிகு தி--as எண்ணி, சொல்லி, &c. 1. A prefix to ஆனைமயிர், s. The hair of an elephant's tail. ஆனைமயிர்க்காப்பு, s. Bracelets of the hair of elephants' tails. ஆனைமலை, s. The name of a mountain in the south near Madura. ஆனைமுகவன்--ஆனைமுகன், s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். 2. An Asoor, கசமுகா சுரன். (p.) ஆனைமுதுகு, s. An elephant's back. ஆனையடி, s. The footsteps of an elephant. ஆனையறுகு, s. A kind of grass, ஓரறுகு. ஆனையறையும்புள்--ஆனையிறாஞ்சி ப்புள்--அனையுண்குருகு, s. A fabulous bird --said to devour the elephant. ஆனையிலத்தி, s. Elephant's dung. ஆனையூர்தி, s. Indra whose vehicle is the elephant, இந்திரன். 2. Ian, ஐயன். (p.) ஆனையேற்றம், s. Learning and practising to ride on an elephant, யானை யேறிப்பழகுகை. ஆனைவணங்கி, s. A kind of plant whose flower is supposed to resemble the trunk of an elephant. It is also fancied to be a preservative against the attack of a wild elephant, which, it is said, will retire abashed at the sight of it, தேட்கொடுக்குப்பூண்டு. ஆனைவாழை, s. A species of plantain, ஓர்வகைவாழை. ஆனைவிழுங்குமீன், s. A large fish --said to devour the elephant, திமிங்கிலம். ஆனைவீரர், s. āl (p. 43) s. That species of banian tree which casts roots from its branches-deemed sacred to Vishnu, and commonly regarded as the abode of goblins. Its roots form one of the kinds of sacrificial fuel, ஆலமரம், Ficus indica, L. (c.) ஆல்போற்றழைத்து அறுகுபோல்வேரூன்றி மூங்கில் போற்சுற்ற முசியாமல் வாழ்ந்திருப்பீர். May you flourish as a banian tree, put forth roots and spread as the creeping stems of the arugu grass, and prosper being encircled by kinsmen as thickly crowded bamboos. ஆலமர்கடவுள், s. Siva, சிவன். (p.) ஆலம்விழுது, s. The roots growing down from the branches of the banian tree. ஆலின்மேற்புல்லுருவி or புல்லூரி, s. A mistletoe that destroys the tree on which it grows, even the ஆல், which otherwise is never known to die, as it throws down its roots and continues to spread itself. கல்லால்--குறுவால்--சிற்றால், s. The இத்தி tree, Ficus virens. (p.) 5)

iṭṟu (p. 45) கிறேன், இடறினேன், வேன், இடற, v. a. To kick off or away, to sever or strike off a head, a limb, &c., with the foot, a bent bow, &c., பெயர்க்க. 2. v. n. To stumble, trip, strike the foot against, தடக்க. இடறொட்டமெனநெடியவரையுருட்டி. Rolling the towering mountains, as one might dash to pieces a pot-sherd with his feet. (இராமா.) கரடியிடறிவிளையாடுஞ்சுரம். The forest where the bear plays, knocking about (the fruits, &c.) with his feet. பரிகாரர்தலையிடறி. (An elephant) striking off the heads of horsemen. (பெரியபுராணம்.) காலிடறிவிழுந்தான். He stumbled and fell. பகைவரின்தலையையானையின்காலினாலிடறுவித்தான். He caused the heads of the enemies to be struck off, with the foot of an elephant. இடறுகட்டை, s. A stumbling block, hinderance, an obstruction. இடறல், v. noun. Stumbling, tripping. 2. Offence, scandal. இடறற்பட, inf. To take offence, to be offended, be hindered. 76)
