A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. Before a nasal பல் becomes பன், as பன்னுனி, the tip of a tooth. பல்லரணை--பல்லரனை, s. A kind of excrescence on the gums, gum-boil, ஓர் நோய். பல்லன், s. [fem. பல்லி.] A man with long or large teeth. பல்லிடுக்கு, s. Partings between the teeth, in reference to food sticking in them. பல்லுகட்ட--பற்கட்ட, inf. To fasten teeth [with gold] 2. To make and place [artificial] teeth. பல்லுகிட்டல்--பற்கிட்டல், v. noun. Chattering of the teeth from cold. 2 Closing together the jaws in convulsions; (lit.) approaching together of the teeth. பல்லுக்காட்ட--பல்லைக்காட்ட--பற்கா ட்ட, inf. To grin from meanness or want of good manners. 2. To cringe, beg meanly, ask pardon in a cringing manner. 3. To laugh irreverently. பல்லுக்குச்சி, s. As பற்குச்சி. பல்லுக்குத்த--பற்குத்த, inf. To ache in the teeth. 2. To pick the teeth. பல்லுக்குப்பதப்பட்டது, appel. n. Delicate food; also used in contempt. பல்லுக்கெஞ்ச--பல்லைக்கெஞ்ச, inf. As பல்லுக்காட்ட, 2. பல்லுக்கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of pastry covered with roasted pulse or rice in imitation of teeth, made on the appearance of the child's first tooth. பல்லுக்கொறிக்க, inf. To grind the teeth together. பல்லுதிரஅடிக்க, inf. [improp. பக்கறை.] Tartar, or artificial blackness of the teeth. பற்காவி--பற்காறை, s. A kind of black ochre, or composition of betel, &c., used to strengthen and color the teeth. pāl (p. 313) s. Milk, பசுவின் பால்முதலியன. 2. Milky juice in plants, trees and fruits--as the eocoa-nut, மரமுதலியவற்றின்பால். 3. Lymph, matter, fluid in pustules, &c., அம்மைப்பால். 4. (சது.) Whiteness, வெண்மை. [a contraction of Sa. Palana, milk of a cow recently calved.]--Note. In combination the final ல் is changed by rule to ற், sometimes to ன், பாலுக்குங்காவல்பூனைக்குந்தோழன். A guard to the milk, but a friend to the cat. பாலும்வெள்ளைமோரும்வெள்ளை. Milk is white, whey is white--spoken of persons or things apparently similar, but really very different. பால்வார்த்துமுழுகுவான். He will bathe, putting milk on his head (in token of his joy at your death, &c.). பாலடை, s. A shell for a milk-ladle, பாலடைச்சங்கு. [loc.] 2. A shrub, பால டைச்செடி, Hallia sororia. பாலடைய, inf. [prov.] To bathe after putting milk and sacrificial grass on the head--as a bride and bridegroom before marriage, before marriage, to obtain progeny. பாலும்பழமும்கொடுக்க, inf. To give milk and plantains as done by a bride and bridegroom to each other, after the marriage ceremony. (c.) பாலுறட்டி, s. [prov.] A kind of pastry, made with cocoa-nut milk. பாலூட்டி, inf. To suckle a child. பாலொலிக்க, inf. [prov.] To keep back milk as a cow for its calf. பால்கட்ட--பால்வைக்க, inf. To innoculate, to vaccinate. பால்குடிக்க, inf. To suck milk as a babe. 2.
