eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. A distinct species of எள். பேரெள்ளு, s. A large kind of sesamum. கடலெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum. வெள்ளெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum bearing white seed. சிற்றெள்ளு, s. cūṉiyam (p. 201) s. Witchcraft, conjuring, sorcery, magic, enchantment, மாரணவித்தை, 2. Ceremonial defilement, அசுசி. 3. Vacuity, vacuum, chasm, nonentity, inanity, nonexistence of a being, quality, attribute, &c., இன்மை. 4. W. P. 854. S'OONYA. Emptiness, vacancy, void, பாழ். 5. The articles used in witchcraft (சூனியதிரவியம்), are seven, viz.: 1. எலும்பு, bones. 2. எட்டிவிறகு, wood of the poison-nut tree. 3. ஊமத்தம் வித்து, seeds of the datura. 4. வேப்பெண் ணெய், margosa-oil. 5. கரி, charcoal. 6. எருக் கம்பூ, flowers of the asclepias gigantea. 7. பாம்பு முள்மாலை, garland of the vertebra of the cobra-de-capella. சூனியகதி, s. A section in the poem of பிரபுலிங்கலீலை. சூனியக்காரன், s. fem. சூனியக்காரி.) A wizard, sorcerer, enchanter. சூனியம்பண்ண--சூனியஞ்செய்ய, inf. To be witch, to work witchcraft. 2. To injure, destroy, defile, annihilate, ruin. சூனியதிசை, s. The S. E. point of the compass, bring by some astrological or other influence deemed unpropitious. 2. The direction or side in which the breath does not pass from the nostril, right or left, at any given time. See. சரம். சூனியநிதி, s. A phasis of the moon, which, when a similar one occurs in the same month, is regarded as unpropitious, the other being propitious. சூனியத்துவம், s. Vacuity, emptiness, &c.,--as சூனியம், 4, 5, 6, which see. சூனியநாள், s. An unpropitious day. See கிழமைச்சூனியம். சூனியமனை, s. Bewitched ground. சூனியமாதம், s. Unpropitious months, viz.: மாசி, ஆடி, புரட்டாதி, மார்கழி, (c.) சூனியமாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To lie waste, to be desolate. சூனியமெடுக்க, inf. To remove the evil ascribed to whichcraft. சூனியம்வைக்க, inf. To bury bewitched articles for the injury of some one. சூனியமாய்ப்போக, inf. To be annihilated. 2. To be useless, unprofitable. 3. To be degenerate, to be ruined--as சுத் தசூனியமாய்ப்போய்விட்டான். சூனியவாதம், s. Atheism as a system, நாஸ்திகமதம். சூனியவாதி, s. An atheist. 2. (c.) As சூ னியக்காரன். சூனியவித்தை, s. Witchcraft, as சூனி யம். சூனியன், s. A lame person, a cripple, முடவன். (சது.) விவேகசூனியன்--ஞானசூனியன், s. One who has no wisdom, no wit; a fool. சூனியோபாதானம், s. [in Hindu Theology] Nonentity--as the material cause of created beings and things; nothing, considered as a principle from which the visible universe came into existence. See மயோபாதானம். vēmpu (p. 402) --வேப்பமரம், s. [adjectively, வேப்பு.] The Margosa or Neem tree, Azadirachta Indica. There are two varieties, கருவேம்பு and மலைவேம்பு. Which see; சிவனார் வேம்பு and நிலவேம்பு are two different medicinal plants. வேம்புவிரும்பக்கரும்பாகும். If it wished, the bitter Margosa might become sugar-cane; i. e. 'where's a will there's a way.' அவனுக்குவீடுவேம்பாய்ப்போயிற்று. His house [wife], has become bitter, used by a married woman. வேப்பங்கள், s. Sour juice that oozes from some Margosa trees, taken medicinally for venerial eruptions, &c. வேப்பங்காய், s. Its unripe fruit or drupe. வேப்பமுத்து, s. The seeds of the வேம்பு. வேப்பம்பட்டை, s. The bark of the வேம்பு, used as a tonic and febrifuge. வேப்பம்பலகை, s. Boards from the tree. வேப்பிலை, s. The leaves of the வேம்பு used medicinally, and as a charm for possessed persons, or animals, and those bitten by poisonous reptiles. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from the seeds. வேம்பின்றாரோன், appel. n. An epithet of the Pandya kings. See நிம்பத்தாரோன். 47)
