kumpam (p. 123) s. An earthen pot, a water-pot, கலசம். 2. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. [prov.] To hang or droop--as the கும்பம் and head of a person while near death. கும்பஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make a hillock over a grave, சமாதியின்மேல்மண்குவிக்க. 2. To inter the dead, especially such as died of cholera. கும்பப்பிளவை, s. A cancerous disease on the top of the back, ஓர்பிளவை. கும்பவாதம், s. One of the eight disorders of flatulence. (M. A stanza curiously constructed, of a few letters in the periphery and radii of a circle, to be repeated over and over in the reading, ஓர்மிறைக்கவி.--It embraces three varieties; viz.: நான்காரைச்சக்கரம்.ஆறா ரைச்சக்கரம் and எட்டாரைச்சக்கரம். (தண்டி.) அவனுக்கிதோடேசக்கரமறுதி. His course of life will end with this. சக்கரத்தில் கிடந்தாடுகிறான். He is captivated, enamored--said of a lover. 2. Making diagrams with appropriate letters on charms, &c. (c.) பூச்சக்கரம், s. A zone of the earth; the mundane sphere, the earth. சக்கராக்கினை, s. An arbitrary punishment inflicted on a person by a despot. 2. The decree of a monarch. (R.) சக்கராங்கனம்--சக்கராங்கிதம், s. The mark of the chakram upon the shoulders, with a hot iron. (R.) சக்கரவர்த்தி--சக்கரேசுரன்--சக்கரேசு வரன், s. An emperor, a monarch. சக்கராதிபதி, s. An independent sovereign. சக்கரபரிபாலனம்பண்ண, inf. To reign, to govern a country. சக்கரப்பொறி, s. A kind of guillotine, ஓர்தண்டனைக்கருவி. சக்கரவாகம்--சக்கரவாகப்புள், s. The ruddy goose--as சக்கரம். 9. சக்கரவாளம்--சக்கரவாளகிரி, s. A range of mountains supposed to encircle the golden region which bounds the 7th circumambient continent and sea. 25)

cangku (p. 156) s. [a change of சங்கம்.] The chank, conch-shell, spiral shell in general, பணிலம். 2. A bracelet, often made of the conch, கைவளை. (c.) 3. Frontal bone, forehead, நெற்றி. 4. The legs, கணைக்கால். 5. Union, junction, contact, copulation, கூடு கை. 6. (c.) A number, a thousand trillion, ஓர்எண். 7. The சங்கு shrub. ஓர்செடி. Monetia barlerioides, L. 8. W. p. 825. SANKU. A kind of weapon, a javelin, ஓர்படைக்கலம். 9. [prov.] Gnomon of a dial, சாயாமானியினூசி. 1. [in astron.] Gnomon, or a perpendicular column for measuring the altitude of the sun by the length of its shadow; also for making other astronomical observations. இடம்புரிச்சங்கு-வலம்புரிச்சங்கு-சூற் சங்கு-தாழஞ்சங்கு-பாலடைச்சங்கு-முட்சங்கு-வெ ற்றிச்சங்கு. (c.) சங்குகுளிக்க, inf. To dive for chanks. See குளி, v. சங்குச்சலாபம், s. The chank fishery. சங்குச்சுரி-சங்குப்புரி, s. [prov.] A screw. (Limited.) சங்குத்திரி, s. [loc.] The spiral winding in shells. சங்குதிருகி, s. A cork-screw. 2. A machine for sawing and cutting shells. (Limited usage.) சங்குநாதம்-சங்கொலி, s. The sound of a blown chank-as சங்கநாதம். சங்குமணி, s. Beads cut from chanks. சங்குவெள்ளைவைக்க, inf. [loc.] To plaster with pure white chunam. சங்குஸ்தாபனம், s. A ceremony to remedy the evil of an inauspicious location of a house. A conch shell is filled with water and incantations made for forty-five days. After this it is burned under the wall. சங்குத்தாலி-சங்குந்தாலியும், s. The tail, or marriage badge, in imitation of chanks, one on either side. சங்குத்தாலிவெள்ளாளர், s. A class of Vellalas whose women wear சங்குத்தாலி. சங்குப்பறையர், s. A class of Pariahs whose women wear chank bracelet on their ankles. சங்குமோதிரம், s. Rings cut from chanks. சங்கூத, inf. To blow a chank in a temple, or at a marriage, funeral, &c. சங்கூதி, s. [prov.] A chank-blower. சங்கூமச்சி, s. A chank-like-cockle. See ஊமச்சி. 24)
சிவன்
civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)

tāpaṉam (p. 233) --ஸ்தாபனம், s. Establishing, founding, நிறுத்துகை. 2. Settlement, establishment, institution, நிலை. 3. Fixing or concentrating the thoughts upon the objects of meditation, நினைவைநிலைபெறுத்துகை. --There are as அட்சரஸ்தாபனம், கும்பஸ்தாபனம், தெய்வஸ்தாபனம், பாஷாணஸ்தாபனம், மந்திரஸ்தாப னம், யந்திரஸ்தாபனம், which see in their places. தாபனமுத்திரை, s. Libations of water, and sacrificial grass, to an image, &c., as அருக்கியம். தாபனம்பண்ண, inf. To fix, to place. 46) *
தெய்வம்
teyvam (p. 256) s. God, the Godhead, Deity, thus used in the neuter by good writers, கடவுள். 2. Fate, destiny, or the influence of actions performed in previous births, pursuing the soul and impelling to actions good or bad, ஊழ். 3. One of the eight kinds of marriage, எண்வகைமணத்தி லொன்று. W. p. 425. DAIVA. 4. A year, வருடம். (சது.) 5. One of the five யாகம், ஐவ கையாகத்தொன்று. தெய்வஞ்சீறில்கைதவமாளும். When the god is angry the penance is nullified. தெய்வகளை, s. Lustre of countenance a from the indwelling of Deity. See களை. தெய்வகற்பனை, s. Divine order or injunction, especially as attended by an oracle. தெய்வகாரியம், s. Divine or sacred things, concerns of religion, &c. தெய்வக்காவல், s. Divine protection. தெய்வசகாயம், s. Divine assistance. தெய்வசபை, s. The divine presence. See தேவசபை. தெய்வசாட்சி, s. God as witness. 2. the deity as all pervading. 3. Appeal to the Deity, oath. தெய்வசிந்தனை, s. Divine meditation, contemplations on the deity, &c., pious thoughts. தெய்வசுரபி--தெய்வப்பசு, s. The cow of the gods, காமதேனு. தெய்வசோதனை, s. Providential trials. தெய்வச்சாயல், s. Divine likeness, as in the countenance of a devout or holy person, chaste matrons, &c. தெய்வச்செயல், s. Providential occurrence, divine providence. தெய்வதத்துவம், s. Divine power. See தேவதத்துவம். தெய்வதுரோகம், s. Sin immediately against the Deity, as profanation, blasphemy, sacrilege, &c., apostasy, &c. தெய்வதூஷணம், s. Insult offered to the Deity, blasphemy, &c., See தேவதூ ஷணம். தெய்வத்தாபனம்--தெய்வஸ்தாபனம், s. Inspiring an image with the god represented. தெய்வத்தீர்வை, s. Divine judgement. தெய்வஸ்துதி, s. Divine praise. தெய்வத்துவம், s. The Godhead, Deity, the divine neture. See தேவத்துவம். தெய்வநாஸ்திகன், s. An atheist, but applied by the orthodox Hindus to any one who denies the divine authority of the Vedas, or doubts that of the Puranas. தெய்வநிந்தனை, s. Offence or insult offered to the Deity, blasphemy, &c. தெய்வநியமம், s. Judgement from heaven, divine decree, providential occurrence. தெய்வபத்தி, s. Devotedness, piety, religious zeal, trust in God for a good or bad destiny. தெய்வபூசை, s. Puja to a god. தெய்வப்பசு, s. See தெய்வசுரபி, தெய்வப்புலமை, s. Divinely inspired poetry--applied often to the குறள் and இராமாயணம். தெய்வப்பெண், s. A female of Swerga. தெய்வப்பெயர்த்தொகுதி, s. A classification of the names of the gods, and whatever is regarded divine, or celestial, &c., as given in நிகண்டு. தெய்வமணம், s. One of the eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். 2. Geateful odors, as திவ்வியமணம். தெய்வமத்தியஸ்தம், s. God being judge, a solemn appeal to the Deity. தெய்வமந்திரி, s. The planet Jupiter, as instructor of the gods, வியாழன். தெய்வமுனி, s. Munis of the race of Devas, as நாரதர், சூதர், &c. தெய்வமுனிவு, s. Divine indignation. தெய்வமுன்னிலை, s. Divine presence spoken woth a conscientious regard to God. தெய்வம்வழிபடல், v. noun. Worshiping of God, divine worship. தெய்வயானை, s. [improp. தெய்வானை.] A female of Swerga nurtured by the elephant ஐராவதம், and afterwards married to the god Skanda. தெய்வயானைகாந்தன், s. Skanda as husband of Devayanai. தெய்வவணக்கம், s. Divine worship. 2. Invocation, &c., of some god at the beginning of a treatise. தெய்வவிசுவாசம், s. Confidence or faith in God. 2. Belief in the divine existence, providences, &c. தெய்வவிமானம், s. An serial ear, said to move through, the sky at the pleasure of the occupier, திவ்வியவிமானம். தெய்வவிரதன், s. Bhishma, வீடுமாசா ரி. See தேவவிரதன். தெய்வாதீனம், s. Divine right, disposal, or direction தேவசுவாதீனம். 2. Divine providence, தெய்வச்செயல். தெய்வாதீனமாய்வருவது. That which happens providentially. தெய்வேத்தினம்--தேவேத்தினம், s. Divine providence. 2. Destiny or the influence of actions in a former birth. தெய்வோபாசனை, s. (St.) Divine worship, divine service. (சது.) மதம்பாய்தல், v. noun. Flowing out-as venereal secretions from elephants, sap from trees, or juice from the bodies of bulls, மதநீர்பாய்தல். மதம்பொழிதல், v. noun. Sporting, frolicking, wantoning. மதவெறி, s. Religious frenzy, fanatic zeal, சமயமருள். 2. Intoxication, inebriation, குடிவெறி. 3. Wantonness, voluptuousness, காமவெறி. 4. Arrogance, selfconsequence, அகங்காரம். மதாசாரம்--மதாச்சாரம், s. Religious practice, observance of religious rites, and rules, சமயவொழுக்கம். மதாபிமானி, s. mantiram (p. 343) s. A mystical verse, as a prayer, or form of exorcism. 2. A section of the Vedas including prayers and hymns. See உபநிடதம் and வேதாங்கம். 3. A formule sacred to some deity; as ஓம் சிவாயநம, ஓம்வைஷ்ணவாயநம. 4. Private deliberation, secret consultation, ஆலோசனை. W. p. 641. MANTRA. 5. Opinion, எண்ணம். மந்திரங்கால்மதிமுக்கால். The virtue of an incantation is one-fourth and that of wit is three-fourths. மந்திரத்திலேமாங்காய்விழாது. A mango will not fall from a tree by means of a mantra. [prov.] மந்திரகலை, s. One of the three divisions of the Agamas--the devotional. See தந்திரகலை and உபதேசகலை. மந்திரகாஷாயம்--மந்திரகாவி, s. The cloth given by the bridegroom to the bride on the day of marriage, with incantations, &c., மணக் கூறை. 2. See கூறை. மந்திரசத்தி, s. The power of an incantation. மந்திரசாத்திரம், s. The knowledge of incantations. See கலைஞானம். மந்திரசித்தி, s. Success of incantations. See சித்தி. மந்திரசுத்தி, s. Purification by மந்திரம். See சுத்தி. மந்திரஸ்தம்பம், s. A post set up by sages, with incantations, as an antidote for venomous bites, or for magical purposes. மந்திரஸ்தாபனம், s. Uttering incantations over magical letters, diagrams, &c., to communicate virtue to them. See தாபனம். மந்திரஸ்நானம், s. (lit.) Magical bathing of the sick by sprinkling a few drops of water on the head and repeating magical letters. மந்திரஞ்செபிக்க--மந்திரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To pronounce a mantra. மந்திரதந்திரம், s. A motion of the fingers while repeating incantations. மந்திரதந்திரத்தினாலேமயக்கம்வருவிக்க. To bewilder by enchantment. மந்திரதாரணை, s. One of the nine forms of worship by the Saiva yogis. See தாரணை. மந்திரத்தால்வாய்கட்ட, inf. To stop the mouths of snakes, sharks, wild beasts, &c, by incantations. மந்திரத்தாற்கட்ட, inf. To bind with spells. மந்திரப்பிரயோகம், s. The application of a magical formula. மந்திரமுச்சரித்தல்--மந்திரமுருவேற்றல், v. noun. Repeating mantras frequently. மந்திரம்பண்ண, inf. As மந்திரிக்க. மந்திரமுருப்போட, inf. To repeat with a rosary the whole round of mantras. மந்திரவாதம், s. An incantation. மந்திரவாள், s. A magical sword. மந்திரவிதி, s. A rule for incantations. மந்திரவித்தை, s. வேதம்
vētam (p. 402) s. The holy books of the Hindus--said to have been revealed by Brahma, but compiled from tradition by vyasa. They are four in number; 1. இருக்கு, Rig Veda, chiefly relating to ritual worship; 2. எசுர், Yajur Veda, concerning the ceremonies observed in sacrifices; 3. சாமம், Sama Veda, containing odes, hymns and chants; 4. அதர்வ ணம், Atharvan'a, with mantras or magical formulas, the least esteemed of the four. உபவேதம், s. The four secondary sciences. These are அருத்தவேதம், commentary on the Vedas; ஆயுர்வேதம், Physic; காந்தருவவேதம், music; தனுர்வேதம், archery. வேதகலாபம், s. Religious persecution. வேதக்காரர், s. Brahmans skilled in one or more of the Vedas. (R.) 2. [Heathen usage.] Roman Catholics. வேதக்கொடியோன், s. An epithet of Dron'acharya as the Veda-bannered, துரோணாசாரியன். (சது.) வேதசாஸ்திரம், s. [R, C, usage,] A martyr. வேதசாரம், s. [lit. the essence of religion.] The title of a book. 2. A reed, நாணற்புல். வேதநாயகன், s. The Deity as lord of the Vedas, பிரமன், கடவுள். வேதநூல், s. A religious system. வேதபாரகர், s. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 2. Those who are well versed in the Vedas, See பாரகர். 3. [Chris. usage.] Scribes, expounders of the Jewish law. வேதபாராயணம், s. (சது.) வேதாகமம், s. Authoritative books corresponding with the Vedas. 2. [Chris. usage.] The Bible. வேதாக்கிரேசர், s. Chief teachers of the Vedas. வேதாக்கினி, s. A sacrificial fire. See அக்கினி. வேதாங்கம், s. Sciences subordinate to the Vedas, of which there are six: 1. மந்திரம், mantras; 2. நிகண்டு, vocabulary; 3. வியாகரணம், grammar; 4. சந்தோபிசிதம், prosody; 5. நிருத்தம், explanation of mystic words; 6. சோதிடம், astronomy, astrology.--According to Wils. சிட்சை and கற்பம், are given for the first two. வேதாந்தம், s. [lit. the end of the Vedas.] A refined system of philosophy taught by Vyasa in the Uttara-mimamsa, and reduced by himself to 5 stanzas. It was commented on by Madevacharya, Sankaracharya, and Ramanujacharya, severally in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visishta--adwaita systems. The first and last allow a distinct existence of matter, but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence of matter, and resolves all existence into God. The Vedanta, simply stated, is a system of Pantheism. See அத்துவிதம் and துவிதம். 2. The thirty-two Upanishads, or appendixes, to the Vedas. See சாஸ்திரம். வேதாந்தசூடாமணி, s. A metaphysical treatise by சிவப்பிரகாசதேசிகர். வேதாந்தமதஸ்தாபனம், s. Establishing the doctrines of the Vedanta system. வேதாந்தன்--வேதார்த்தன், s. God as the object of the Vedas, கடவுள். வேதாந்தி, s. [pl. வேதாந்திகள்.] One skilled in the Vedanta. வேதோக்தம், s. That which is scriptural or declared in the Vedas. 24) *
