aṟuku (p. 33) s. A kind of grass deemed sacred to Ganesa and others, ஓர்புல். Agrostis linearis, L. (c.) 2. (p.) A lion, சிங்கம். 3. The yali--a fabulous beast, யாளி. 4. Male tiger, ஆண்புலி. 5. ஆல்
āl (p. 43) s. That species of banian tree which casts roots from its branches-deemed sacred to Vishnu, and commonly regarded as the abode of goblins. Its roots form one of the kinds of sacrificial fuel, ஆலமரம், Ficus indica, L. (c.) ஆல்போற்றழைத்து அறுகுபோல்வேரூன்றி மூங்கில் போற்சுற்ற முசியாமல் வாழ்ந்திருப்பீர். May you flourish as a banian tree, put forth roots and spread as the creeping stems of the arugu grass, and prosper being encircled by kinsmen as thickly crowded bamboos. ஆலமர்கடவுள், s. Siva, சிவன். (p.) ஆலம்விழுது, s. The roots growing down from the branches of the banian tree. ஆலின்மேற்புல்லுருவி or புல்லூரி, s. இளமை
iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. சித்து
cittu (p. 183) s. Intellect, intelligence, the principle of knowledge or intellect in the deity, or human souls; spirit (as opposed to சடம் or அசித்து, matter or non-intelligence) in all its diversified forms in the various beings inhabiting the universe, whether supernal, infernal, human, brute or vegetable; all being capable of knowing and enjoying the deity, அறிவுப்பொருள். W. p. 325. CHIT. 2. (a change of சித்தி.) Illimitable and supernatural powers, obtained by abstract devotion, and exercised at pleasure; including the eight சித்தி, which see. 3. Legerdemain, sleight of hand, exhibition of supernatural appearances by means of magic, alchemy, &c., மாயாவித்தை. 4. The யாகம் sacrifice. சித்திலாதபோதுவேறுசீவனில்லையில்லையே. When there is no intelligence, there is no life. i. e. to deny intelligence [as a first cause.] is to deny that there is life. சித்தசித்து, s. ciṉṉ (p. 190) adj. Small, little, சிறிய. 2. Inferior, bare, mean, low, இழிந்த. சின்னச்சாதி, s. A low caste. சின்னக்காசு, s. A very small old coin. சின்னஜலபாதை, s. [vul.] Urgency to urine--oppos. to பெரியசலபாதை. சின்னஞ்சிறியது, appel. n. A very small, fine, or minute thing. சின்னஞ்சிறுவயசு, s. Childhood. (c.) சின்னட்டி, s. [prov.] A little person, animal or thing, சிறியது. சின்னது, appel. n. That which is small. சின்னப்பன், s. [vul.] [prop. சிற்றப் பன்.] The father's younger brother, or the mother's younger sister's husband. சின்னக்காள், s. The elder sisters, taken individually, except the eldest, in relation to the youngest. சின்னப்பயல்--சிறுபயல், s. A little fellow. (in contempt.) சின்னப்பர், s. [Rom. Catho. usage.] The apostle Paul. சின்னவேலை, s. A little job, a small matter. சின்னப்புத்தி, s. Meanness of mind, or the low thoughts of one of mean parentage. 2. சிறகு
ciṟku (p. 189) s. Wing, pinion, feather, plumage. இறகு. 2. The fin of a fish, மீன்சிறகு. 3. The wing of a building, a row of houses, side of street, தெருவின்பக்கம். (c.) 4. Small branching channels for irrigation, நீர்க்கா ற்சிறகு. 5. [prov.] The half of a palmyra leaf, பனைமடலிற்பாதி. 6. The leaf of a door or shutter, கதவுச்சிறகு. Compare சிறை. படைச்சிறகு. The wing of an army. (சிலப்.) மனுஷன்சிறகில்லாப்பறவை. Man is a wingless bird. சிறகில்லாப்பறவைபோல். Like a wingless bird, i. e., forlorn, destitute person. அவருடையசிறகுமுறிந்துபோயிற்று. His wings are broken, i. e., he has lost office or valuable help. சிறகடிக்க, inf. To flap the wing with force as fowls, or as birds commencing flight. சிறகாற்ற, inf. To flutter the wings as some birds after skimming through the air, to rest, as birds. (c.) சிறகுகட்டிப்பறக்க, inf. To go with great swiftness, (lit.) to take wings and fly. சிறகுக்கதவு, s. [prov.] A two leaved door. சிறகுக்குடில், s. [prov.] A small portable hut covered. சிறகுகோத--சிறகுளர, inf. To adjust the feathers with the beak. சிறகுமுளைக்க, inf. To shoot out feathers, to become fledged. 2. (fig.) To become of age, தகுந்தவயசுவர. சிறகுமுளைத்தார்பறவையுங்கற்றார். Those that become fledged (whose wings are grown) learn also to fly, i. e., those raised from a low condition assume airs. வாய்க்காற்சிறகு, s. A branch of a main channel in a garden. (Rare.) 17)

ciṟppu (p. 189) s. Beauty, embellishment, அல ங்காரம். 2. Pomp, parade, grandeur, மகிமை. 3. Eminence, superiority, மேன்மை. 4. Speciality, distinctiveness, விசேஷம். 5. That which is specific--as opposed to the generic (பொது), சிறப்புப்பெயர். 6. Choiceness, rareness, அருமை. 7. Pre-eminence, transcendency, மேம்பாடு. 8. A sacred periodical festival, a temple procession, &c., உற்சவம். 9. Civilities to guests, etiquette, உபசாரம். 1, Abundance, plenty, copiousness, intensity, excess, மிகுதி. 11. Auspiciousness, propitiousness, prosperity, சுபம். 12. Classical beauty, புலமைச்சிறப்பு. ஊணுடையெச்சமுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறலல நாணு டைமாந்தர்சிறப்பு. Food, dress, &c., are common to men, but modesty is peculiar to the good. (குற) சிறப்பகத்திணை, s. Reflection, discrimination, as a faculty of the mind distinct from perception by the senses; [ex அகத்திணை.] See திணை. சிறப்பிலாதாள், s. The goddess of illluck, மூதேவி; [ex இலாதாள்.] (நிக.) சிறப்புச்சூத்திரம், s. Special or particular rules in scientific, or literary works as distinguished from general rules. சிறப்புச்செய்ய--சிறப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To beautify, to adorn. 2. To show civilities, உபசரிக்க. 3. [prov.] To celebrate a temple festival. சிறப்புச்சொல், s. A specific word, not generic. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், s. A special preface --distinguished from பொதுப்பாயிரம். சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. Particular, proper, specific or special names--opposed to பொதுப்பெயர். 2. Official or acquired names, titles of rank, &c.--Note. சிறப்புப் பெயர் is derived from eight sources as-திணை, a track--as குறவன், a mountainer. 2. நிலம், country--as சீனன், Chinese. 3. சாதி, caste--as அம்பட்டன், the barber. 4. குடி, family--as சேரன், the (royal) Seran. 5. உடைமை, possession--as உடையன், the possessor. 6. பொருள், property, as பொன் னன், the possessor of gold. 7. குணம், quality--as பெரியன், the great one. 8. கல்வி, learning--as ஆசிரியன், a teacher. சிறப்புவிதி, s. A specific rule. சிறப்பெடுக்க, inf. To solemnize a temple festival, திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட. (p.) சிறப்பெழுத்து, s. Letters in Tamil which have no corresponding letters in Sanscrit, viz.: எ, ஒ, ழ, ற, ன, ஃ, ஒற்றளபு, and some others. 2. Sanscrit letters that have none exactly corresponding with them in Tamil. 27)
சிறிய
ciṟiy (p. 189) adj. Little, minor, &c. சிறியதகப்பன்--சிறியபிதா, s. A paternal uncle, the father's younger brother, or the mother's younger sister's husband. The father's paternal cousin, younger than the father.--Note. The relationship may be extended to distant relatives. சிறியதாய், s. (Rarely சிறியமாதா.) A maternal aunt, the mother's younger sister, or the father's younger brother's wife. சிறியதாய்முறை, s. Consanguinity of one's husband or wife's father's younger sister. 2. The husband's or wife's younger paternal aunt, or wife of the younger paternal uncle. 3. Step-mother. சிறியமனம், s. [prov.] A little mind. 2. Meanness. சிறியசிந்தையார், s. The narrow minded, the base--as சிறியர். (சது.) 37)

ciṟiyr (p. 189) --சிறியவர்--சிறியார்--சிறி யோர், s. The low, the base, கீழ்மக்கள். 2. Small persons, சிறுவர்; [ex சிறுமை.] சிறியார்க்கினியதுகாட்டாதேசேம்புக்குப்புளிவிடாதாக் காதே. Give not dainties to children, and spare not tamarind with சேம்பு. i. e., indulge not hurtfully, neither hesitate as to what is needful. 39)

A class of Vellalas who wear the badge. சிறுதாளி, s. A twining plant, ஓர்செடி. Convolvulus Gemellus, L. சிறுதானியம், s. Inferior kinds of grain, any kind but rice, பலதானியம். (c.) சிறுதிப்பிலி, s.
