antaram (p. 14) s. Open space, வெளி. 2. Intermediate space, இடை. 3. Ether, as the vehicle of light and sound--supposed to pervade all things and to extend through the universe, பஞ்சபூதத்திலொன்று. 4. The sky, atmosphere, ஆகாயம். Wils. (p.) 37. ANTARA. 5. Temple, தேவர்கோயில். 6. Singleness, loneliness, solitariness, தனி மை. 7. Disaster, mishap, dilemma, தீமை. (பஞ். 49.) 8. End, taken distributively, end of each, முடிவு. 9. Difference, dissension, பேதம். 1. Measure, அளவு. 11. Remainder after subtraction, difference, சேஷம். 12. Period of time, காலம். (சது.) 13. Darkness, இருள். 14. Crowd, கூட்டம். (p.)--Note. All the meanings may be referred to the idea of within and without. (S. Dic.) In combination some variety of meaning is found, as, தேசாந்தரம், a foreign country; வருஷாந்தரம், every year; மாதாந்தரம், every month; முகாந்தரம், on account of; தீவரந்தரம், the remotest isle, &c. அந்தரஆண்டு, s. The time between any given points. [அந்தரம். 2.] அந்தரகாமி, s. A horse which goes above the earth, through the air, ஆகாய மார்க்கமாய்ச்செல்லும்பரி. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரசைவம், s. One of the divisions of the Saiva religion, ஓர்சைவம். அந்தரச்சிந்து, s. One of the thirtytwo kinds of arsenic in its natural state, கற்பாஷாணம். அந்தரதிசை, s. A nine-fold subdivision of the period of a planet's influence on a person's life, கிரகநிலை. [அந் தரம். 2.] அந்தரத்தாமரை, s. A species of lotus whose roots float in the water, not adhering to the soil, ஆகாயத்தாமரை. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரத்திலேநிற்க, inf. To be forsaken by all, be abandoned. [அந்தரம். 1.] என்னையந்தரத்திலேவிட்டான். He has forsaken me. அந்தரபவனி, s. Motion through the air, ஆகாயகமனம். 2. (fig.) Very great swiftness, மிகுவேகம். 3. [prov.] Any thing that goes swiftly, வேகமாய்ச்செல் லுவது. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரப்பிசாசுகள், s. The evil spirits of the air. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரமத்திமபுத்தி, s. Difference between the mean and true daily motion of the sun, or of a planet. [அந் தரம். 4.] அந்தரவல்லி, s. A medicinal creeper, கொல்லன்கோவை. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரவனம், s. An uninhabited desert land. [அந்தரம், 1.] அந்தரவாசம், v. noun. Dwelling in the air, ஆகாயத்தில்வசிக்கை. 2. (s.) A medicinal shrub, ஓர்மருந்துப்பூடு. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தரவாயு, s. Hydrocele, வீம பீசம், [அந்தரம் 2.] அந்தரவீச்சு, v. noun. Beating the air. அந்தரவீச்சுக்காரன், s. One who beats the air, a cheat, a fraudulent man. [அந்தரம். 4.] அந்தராயம், s. Disaster, obstacle, mishap, dilemma, exigency, impediment தீமை. (p.) Wils. p. 38. ANTARAYA. [அந்தரம். 7.] அந்தராளம், s. Middle, intermediate space, நடு, Wils. p. 38. ANTARALA. (p.) See கர்ப்பகிரகம். [அந்தரம். 2.] அந்தராளன், s. The son of an அனுலோம father, and பிரதிலோம mother, அனுலோமத்தந்தைக்கும் பிரதிலோமத்தாய்க்கும்பிறந் தபிள்ளை. அந்தரி, s. canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. cutantaram (p. 193) --சுதந்திரம்--ஸ்வதந்தி ரம், s. W. p. 961. SVATANTRA. Inheritance, heirship, natural prerogative, privilege, சுவாதந்திரியம். 2. Perquiste, benefit, share, allotment, fee, compensation, பெரும்பேறு. (c.) 3. Co-existence, natural and inseparable union, உரிமை. 4. Liberty, freedom, free-agency, independence, தற்சுதந்தரம். (p.) சுதந்தரமின்றியொழுகினான். He was not at his own command. (p.) சுதந்தரக்காணி, s. Hereditary land. சுதந்தரபாரம்பரை, s. Hereditary right, office. சுதந்தரங்கொடுக்க, inf. To pay one his fee, perquisite, share. 2. To give one his inheritance. சுதந்தரப்பணம், s. [vul. சுவந்தரம்.] Perquisite, fee, செல்லுஞ்சுதந்தரம். சுதந்தரம்பெற, inf. To obtain an inheritance. சுதந்தரர், s. [com. சுதந்தரக்காரர்.] Heirs, inheritors, freeholders. 2. Those to whom rights or prerogatives belong. சுதந்தரவறிவு, s. Knowledge as natural or peculiar to the deity, தேவனுக்குரியஅறிவு. சுதந்தரவறிவின்மை, s. Ignorance as peculiar to souls or naturally attaching to them in their primitive or கேவலம் state. சுதந்தரன், s. [com. சுதந்தரவாளி]. fem. சுதந்தரி.] The heir, the lawful inheritor. 71)
துரந்தரன்
turantaraṉ (p. 248) s. One who has assumed a responsibility, charge of a business, a family, a kingdom, &c., பாரஞ்சுமப்போன். 2. One heartily and actively engaged in a pursuit, முயன்றுநிற்போன்; [ex துரம் et தான், who has.] காரியதுரந்தரன், s. An attorney, agent, procurator, steward. See காரியம். நியாயதுரந்தரன், s. A lawyer, a vakeel. See நியாயம். 16) *

pāntu (p. 311) s. [corrup. of Sa. Prantara, the hollow of a tree.] Corner, cavity, hollow in a well, &c., a deep hole, வளை. Compare பொந்து. பாந்துக்கிணறு, s. A well with cavities in the sides. பாந்துவிழ, inf. To occur as a cavity or cavern. 37)

மனு
maṉu (p. 346) s. Menu, the great legislator and saint, regarded as the son of Brahma, or a personification of that god, and the author of மானவம் or Institutes of Menu. He is called Swayambhuva, மனுச்சக்கிரவர்த்தி. 2. A generic term, applied to the fourteen successive Menus who preside over the universe, each for the period of a Manuvantara--In the present Kalpa there have already been six, of whom Swayambhuva was the first. The seventh, or now ruling Menu, is Vaivaswata. 3. Man in general, மனுஷன். 4. Mantra, a mystical verse, or formula, மந்திரம். W. p. 641. MANU. 5. One of the treatises of jurisprudence. The general deluge at the close of each Manuvantara. மனுப்புத்திரர், s. [pl.] The descendants of Menu, மனுவமிசத்தார். 2. Men, human beings, மனுடர். மனுப்பூடுகள், s. [vul.] Human beings, in pity. மனுமகன், s. A man of noble descent, பிரபு. 2. [com. மனுஷமகன்.] An honest man, a man of truth, யோக்கியன். மனுமக்கள், s. [pl.] Men, human beings, மனிதர். மனுரூபம்--மனுவடிவம், s. Human form, image, shape. 2. As மனுஅவதாரம். மனுவந்தரம்--மன்வந்தரம், s.
