aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To reiterate. அடுத்ததண்டனை, s. Deserved punishment. அடுத்ததின்றன்மையான்மாவாகும். The associations of the soul determine its character. (In வீராகமம்.) அடுத்தவீடு, s. The next house. அடுத்தார், s. Subordination, due respect, &c. among the several branches of a family, relative bonds, முறைமை. இனஞ்சனம்--இனத்தார்சனத்தார், s. Relations, kindred and connexions, சுற்றத்தார். இனமொழிவிடை, s. One of the five kinds of இறைபயப்பது--an indirect answer. இனமோனை, s. A rhyme where the letters which begin a line or foot are not the same as those of the next line or foot, but of the same class, இன வெழுத்தால்வருமோனை. If the letters are of the வல்லினம் class, the rhyme is called வல்லினமோனை; if of the மெல்லினம் class, the rhyme is மெல்லினமோனை; if of the இடையினம் class, the rhyme is இடையின மோனை. இனம்பிரிக்க, inf. To divide into classes. இனம்பிரிய, inf. To be separated from the company. இனவழி, s. Descent from the same line or ancestry. 2. Being related to the same breed of cattle. இனவெதுகை, s. A species of rhyme in which the second letters of each stanza are of the same class; it is of three kinds, வல்லினவெதுகை, மெல்லின வெதுகை and இடையினவெதுகை. இனவெழுத்து, s. Relative letters --as the hard letters are to their respective nasals, or vice versa; also letters formed from the same sources which in the consonants run in couplets through the alphabet, and the long vowels to the short, and vice versa, இன மாயுள்ளவெழுத்துக்கள். பாவினம், s. The three classes of poems which partake of the nature of each of the four out of five classes of poems called, தாழிசை, துறைவிருத்தம். 1. Those that have some of the properties of வெண்பா are வெண்டாழிசை or வெள்ளொத் தாழிசை, வெண்டுறை and வெளிவிருத்தம். 2. Those of ஆசிரியம் are ஆசிரியத்தாழிசை, ஆசிரி யத்துறை and ஆசிரியவிருத்தம். 3. Those of கலிப்பா are கலித்தாழிசை, கலித்துறை and கலி விருத்தம். 4. Those of வஞ்சிப்பா are வஞ் சித்தாழிசை, வஞ்சித்துறை and வஞ்சிவிருத்தம். மூவினம், s. To be conceived, to be formed--as conception, கருப்பந்தங்க. கருத்தரிக்க, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated--as animals in general. கருத்தெரியாதவன், s. An unwise man. கருநூல், s. A treatise on enchantment. கருப்பை, s. The matrix, the womb. கருப்பொருள், s. The second class of பொருள், which treats of the beings, things, &c., peculiar to different countries. They are of fourteen kinds from gods down to the employments of men, அந்தந்தநிலங்களைச்சார்ந்தபொருள். See பொருள். கருமாரி, s. Extremity, difficulty in child-birth, பிரசூதவேதனை. கருமாரிப்பட்டை, s. To come to years of discretion. கருவறிந்தவன்--கருவாளி--கருவு ள்ளவன், s. An ingenious person, a genius, ஊகித்தறிபவன். கருவறுக்க, inf. To exterminate a family, &c., to ruin one's property,அடி யோடுகெடுக்க. கருவாமுப்பு, s. Salt-petre, வெடி யுப்பு. கருவிரிய, inf. To ear, to shoot into ears, கதிர்விரிய. கருவிரிந்தபயிர், s. The earing corn. கருவுயிர்க்க, v. n. To bring forth young either human or brute, ஈன. கருவுளமைப்பு, s. The six things incident to sentient beings on assuming corporeal forms, கருவில்நியமிப்பு, viz.: 1. பெறுதல் or பேறு, getting, gain. 2. இழத்தல் or இழவு, losing or loss. 3. இன் பம், pleasure. 4. பிணி or இடையூறு, disease, affliction, mishap, &c. 5. மூப்பு, old age. 6. சாக்காடு, death. To these some add பிரித்தல், separation, removal to a distance; and பிரிவிலாதிருக்கை, continued association. கருவெடுக்க, inf. To take ingredients for witchcraft, மாந்திரீகத்துக்குக்கருவெ டுக்க. வெள்ளைக்கரு, s. The white of an egg. மஞ்சட்கரு, s. The yolk of an egg. 122)

kīẕ (p. 113) s. Place or space, under, below, beneath, downward, low or nether; the bottom, கீழிடம். 2. The east, கிழக்கு. 3. A pit, a hole, பள்ளம். 4. The nether regions, the worlds below, கீழுலகம். 5. Forgetfulness, மறதி. 6. Bridle, reins, bit, கடிவாளம். 7. A low caste, கீழ்மக்கள். (p.) கீணர், s. [கீழ்நர்.] Low, mean people, the base, the vulgar, எளியோர். கீழது, s. That which is under or below; bottom. கீழதுமேலதாக்கிப்போட, inf. To overturn, upset, capsize; to overthrow, to defeat. கீழறுக்க, inf. To burrow, to excavate, to make a subterranean passage, to undermine, பூமியிற் சுரங்கஞ்செய்ய. 2. (fig.) To undermine, to injure by any underhand, clandestine means, சதிசெய்ய. கீழறை, s. An under-ground room, a cellar, நிலவறை. 2. A cavern, a cell, a hole or passage under ground, வளை. கீழாக, inf. To become depressed, to sink--as a stalk, a heap of muck, &c.; to deteriorate, to waste--as the body by use or disease; or as property, &c., தாழ் வடைய. கீழாக--கீழாய s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. To be subdued, to yield, to be submissive, to become inferior, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To be subject, to be subordinate, to submit to, அடங்க. 3. To be degraded, mean, base, இழிவுபட. கீழ்ப்படிய--கீழ்ப்பணிய inf. To submit, to yield, to obey. கீழ்ப்படியாத்தனம்--கீழ்ப்படியாமை, s. Disobedience, insubordination. கீழ்ப்படிவு, v. noun. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. These signs, as well as the கீழ்நோக் கினநட்சத்திரம், are favorable for planting esculent roots and digging wells. கீழ்மேற்றென்வடல், s. The east, west, north and south. 42)

A calf in company with a swine will learn to devour filth; i. e. a man will conform to his associates. இதுஅவனாலேகூடும். He is able to do it. இனிஅவன்கூடான். Henceforth, he will be good-for-nothing. இதுகாரியத்துக்குக்கூடும். This will serve the purpose. நடுவழியிலேகூடினான். He met me in the middle of the road. கூடிப்பிரியேல். Break not (old) friendships. (Av.) அமாவாசைகூடிவிட்டது. [prov.] The time of new moon has already come. ஆளோடேகூடிவிட்டான். He has begun to come into society (from obscurity or boyhood). 2. He is convalescent; he is getting around. ஆகக்கூடியதொகை. The total amount. கூடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To band together; to form an association, to take part in, to side with. 2. To meet together, to assemble. 3. To exceed, surpass. 4. To gain strength and vigor. கூடிவர, inf. To accompany. 2. To prosper, succeed. கூடிநாடித்திரிய, inf. To associate or consort with one, to be on terms of close friendship. கூடாநட்பு, s. False friendship. கூடாவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A simile in which the comparison is made with a thing having only a hypothetical existence, ஓர்உவமையலங்காரம். கூடாவொழுக்கம், s. Immoral conduct --as of anchorets who in secret break their vows. கூடல், v. noun. Approaching, assembling, &c.; seeking, uniting, cohabiting, being possible, &c.--as the verb கூடு. He is not afraid even of his guru. அவன்வீட்டிலேதண்ணீர்கூடக்குடியார்கள்.... They will not drink even water in his house--said in disparagement. நான்கூடஅறியேன். I also know it. அவனுக்குக்கூடக்கொடுத்துப்போட்டீர். You have given him too much. ஐந்துரூபாய்கூடத்தந்தார். He gave five rupees in addition. என்கூடவா. Come with me. கூடிய--கூடின, rel. part. Practicable, possible, convenient, proper, &c. என்னாற்கூடியபணிவிடைக்குக்காத்திருக்கிறேன். I am ready to do any service in my power. கூடியமட்டும்--கூடியமாத்திரம். As far or as much as possible; as much as one is able; to the utmost. கூடும். It is possible, proper, fit, practicable, lawful, &c. கூடாது. It is impossible, impracticable, inconvenient, improper, unlawful, unfit, &c. 2. Note to be done--either as command or an entreaty--according to the manner and tone of the speaker. கால்கைகூடாது. My hands and feet are worn out; i. e. with hard work. என்னாற்கூடாது. I cannot; I will not. கூடாதகாரியம். An impossible thing. கூடலர்--கூடார், s. Enemies, foes, aliens, பகைவர். 26)

He is not my relation; he is not of my caste. இந்துவோடிரவிகூட்டம், s. Conjunction of the moon with the sun; the new moon, அமாவாசை. (நிக.) கூட்டங்கூட, inf. To assemble, or crowd together, to meet. 2. caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *

caṉṉiyācam (p. 174) s. Asceticism, abandonment of all worldly possessions and attachments, being the highest and last of the four brahmanical states. See ஆச் சிரமம். 2. Relinquishment, renunciation, துறவு; [ex சம், entirely, et நியாசம், casting away.] W. p. 891. SANNYASA. சன்னியாசந்தரிக்க, inf. To assume the state and garb of the சன்னியாசி. சன்னியாசமார்க்கம், s. The order of சன்னியாசி. 2. The perpetual bachelorhood of a person of good morals. சன்னியாசமுத்திரை, s. The distinctive marks of the சன்னியாசி, viz.: the staff, the waterpot, an unshaven beard, dishevelied locks, ochred clothes, &c. *சா, A compound letter composed of ச் and ஆ. 2. s. [ex Sa. Jya, to decay.] Death, mortality, மரணம். 3. Devil, பேய். 4. [in astron.] The chord of an arc; but commonly used for அர்த்தச்சா--the sine of an arc. 5. An equation of the centre--as மந்தச்சா. 6. The annual parallax, of a planet. See கற்கிச்சா and மகரச்சா. W. p. 355. JYA. சாக்காடு, s. Mortality, death, மரணம்; [ex காடு, a verbal affix.] சாக்காட்ட--சாக்காக்க, inf. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. To abandon earthly associations, worldliness, secularity, &c. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Celibacy. See under சமுசாரம். 3) *
