uroṭṭi (p. 65) s. (Tel. ரொட்டஎ.) Bread, a loaf, உறட்டி. உரொட்டிக்கிடங்கு, s. A bakehouse. உரொட்டிச்சதை, s. Crumb, the soft part of bread, not the crust. 64) *
ஊமணை
ūmṇai (p. 70) s. A person habitually silent, taciturn, unable to speak freely, பேசத்திறமில்லாதவன். 2. That which is defective, clumsily done, அழகில்லாதது. ஊமணைச்சட்டி, s. [prov.] A chatty not well baked in the kiln, mis-shappen, &c., and that does not conduct the heat well. ஊமணையன்--ஊமணாமூஞ்சி, s. [prov.] A stupid, sullen, pouting person, one with an ugly or forbidding countenance, அவலட்சணமுகத்தான். ஊமணையுரல், s. A bad-formed mortar, not well-formed in its waist, or centre. 5)

kumpi (p. 123) s. Mud, mire; a slough, சேறு. 2. Heated ashes, or ashes in fire for baking, &c., சுடுசாம்பல். 3. The belly, paunch, pot-belly, வயிறு. 4. A heap, குவியல். கும்பிக்கிரைதேடியலையல். Taking great pains in search of food for the belly. ஒருசாண்கும்பிக்குப்பாடுபடுகிறான், inf. He is toiling for the belly, which is but one span long. அடுப்புக்கும்பி, s. The heaten ashes of the oven. கும்பிடுசட்டி, s. [prov. கும்பியிடுசட்டி.] A gold-smith's vessel in which he keeps fire. 2. cuṭu (p. 193) கிறேன், சுட்டேன், வேன், சுட, v. a. To warm, heat, scald, burn, ignite, தகிக்க. 2. To roast, toast, bake, அப்பமுதலியனசுட. 3. To cauterize, brand, scar, சூட்டுக்கோலாற்சுட. 4. To burn up, consume, எரிக்க. 5. To burn as bricks, chunam, tiles or earthern wares in a kiln, காளவாயிற்சுட. 6. To imbrown by heat, வெதுப்ப. 7. To fire a gun, canon, &c., வெடிசுட. 8. (fig.) To mortify scorch the feelings--by sarcasm, reproach, &c., நிந்திக்க. 9. To blight with the eye, கண்ணூ றுபடுத்த. 1. To blight with the tongue, நாவூறுபடுத்த. 11. To sublimate medicines, நீற்ற. அவனைச்சுட்டுப்போட்டான். He has shot him. நல்லோரைத்தீயோர்சொற்சுடுகிறது. The conversation of the wicked gives pain to (burns) the good. நாவினாற்சுட்டவடு. A desert, a place where victuals cannot be got. (c.) சுடுகாட்டுமணிபொறுக்கி, s. A bird. See under காடு. சுடுகோல், s. A rod for stirring the fire in burning a corpse. 2. A brand, an iron rod, சூட்டுக்கோல். சுடுசுண்ணம், s. Burnt lime. சுடுமருந்து, s. A chemical preparation, more commonly, எரிமருந்து. சுடுவனம், s. A place for cremation. சுடுகாடு. சுட்டுக்கொட்டைப்பரப்ப, inf. To devastate a town, and sow ot with seed. (Colloq.) சுட்டசாந்து, s. As சுடுசுண்ணம். சுட்டெரிக்க, inf. To consume by burning. சுட்டசெங்கல், s. Burnt bricks, opposite to பச்சைச்செங்கல். sun-burnt-bricks. சுட்டவிறைச்சி, s. See இறைச்சி. பழுக்கச்சுட, inf. To give a bright yellow color to gold ornaments, by immersing them in a boiling solution of sulphur, saltpetre, culinary salt, and turmeric. See பழு. v. சாடுவெட்டிச்சுட, inf. To clear and burn forest land. நாவிலேசுட, inf. To brand the tongue in restoring one to caste. நாவாலேசுட, inf. To blight with the tongue, &c. சுட்டுப்போட, inf. To consume by fire; to shoot; to blight. பிள்ளையைக்கண்ணாற்சுட்டுப் போட்டார்கள்.... They have blighted (lit. burnt) the child, with their eyes; incduced sickness. விரகங்கொண்டவரைச்சந்திரன்சுடுகிறது. culāvu (p. 197) கிறேன், சுலாவினேன், வேன், சுலாவ, v. a. [improp. சிலாவு.] To make water move or whirl round--as in rinsing a vessel, &c., சுற்ற. (c.) சலாவியூற்ற--சுலாவிவார்க்க, inf. To rinse and cast out. சுலாவியடிக்க, inf. To rush on--as a whirlwind; to sweep away--as an epidemic--as சுருட்டியடிக்க. c. சுலாவுதண்ணீர், s. [prov.] Very shallow water in the fields. சுலாவுரொட்டி, s. [prov.] A kind of pan-cake made by moving the liquid paste while baking. 13) *
நரகம்
narakam (p. 270) s. Hell, the infernal regions, including 28 millions of places of torture of various description, பாதலம். (c.) 2. Abyss of the seven nether worlds, நிரயம். W. p. 455. NARAKA.--The seven chief hells, are: 1. அள்ளல், a hell of mud. 2. இரௌரவம், a horrible hell. 3. கும்பிபாகம், a hell where person are baked as pots. 4. கூடசாலம். 5. செந்துஸ்தானம், a hell of torture by worms. 6. பூதி. 7. மாபூதி. நரகத்திலேவிழுவான். He will fall into hell. நரகப்பிராப்தியானான். He is suffering the pains of hell. நரககதி, s. One of the four races of begins, that of the nether worlds. நரகக்குழி, s. The pit of hell. (c.) நரகச்சுற்று, s. As நரகவட்டம். நரகபாதாளம், s Hell as an abyss, ஆழ்நரகம். நரகப்பிறப்பு, s As நரககதி. (c.). நரகர், s. (plu.) Inhabitants of the nether world. நரகவட்டம், s The ranges of the seven different hells, each composed of a distinct element, 1. தமப்பிரபை, region of a pervading and an intense cold. 3. தூமப்பிரபை, region of thick smoke. 4. வாலுகப்பிரபை, region of sand, or sandbaths. 5. சாகரப்பிரபை, region of perpetual wakefulness. 6. இரத்தப்பிரபை, region of blood. 7. அழற்பிரபை, region of fire. நரகவாசிகள், appel. n. palakāram (p. 301) s. Pastry, confectionery, அப்பவர்க்கம். 2. Stores, provisions for a journey, தின்பண்டமுதலியவை. (c.) 3. Seat for riding on an elephant, யானைமேற்றவிசு. 4. [ex பலம், fruit.] Dessert after food, of fruits, &c., last course at table, பழவூண். பலகாரபக்ஷணம், s. Eating cakes. பலகாரம்பண்ண, inf. To eat pastries. 2. To bake cakes, &c. அவன்எமனைப்பலகாரம்பண்ணுவான். piṭi (p. 314) s. Handle, haft, hilt, catch ஆயு தப்பிடி. (c.) 2. A female elephant, பெண் யானை. 3. A she-camel, பெண்ணொட்டகம். 4. A female Yak, bosgrunniens, பெண்க வரி. (சது.) 5. (c.) A hold, gripe, clutch, pinch, seizure by the hand, பற்று. 6. Firm grasp of the mind, comprehension, கிரகிப்பு. 7. (fig.) Confidence, reliance, trust, நம்பிக் கை. 8. Help, power, refuge, support, உதவி. 9. Religious belief, opinion or tenet, மதக் கொள்கை. 1. A fist, a closed hand, கை முஷ்டி. 11. A handful with the hand closed, a small quantity, பிடியளவு. பிடிகாசு, s. [prov.] A small sum kept back by a purchaser as auspicious. பிடிகாரன், s. [prov.] A fisherman by occupation மீன்பிடிக்கிறவன். பிடிகொடுக்க, inf. To suffer one's self to be taken. 2. To give a handle. 3. To speak or act so as to commit one's self, to divulge one's affairs unintentionally. பிடிகொடாதபேச்சு, Talk of which the meaning cannot be made out. 2. Abuse or irony in terms not to be taken hold of for prosecution. பிடிக்கட்டு, s. A little bundle especially of palm-leaves, tied up. பிடிக்கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of கொழுக்கட்டை pastry. பிடிசுட்டுப்படைக்க, inf. [prov.] To bake little cakes and offer them to the household gods. பிடிதண்டம், s. Unjust seizure of a person. See தண்டம். பிடிநெல்லு, s. A handful of paddy, taken from each marcal by the servants at the public store, as their perquisite for measuring. பிடிநெல்லுக்கிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To take the handful of paddy for measuring. பிடிபிடியென்றுநிற்க, inf. [fig.] To hasten a business. பிடிபோட, inf. To put a handle to any implement. பிடிப்பிச்சை, s. A handful of rice given by a house-wife to the Brahmans, or other religious mendicants. பிடிப்பிட்டு, s. A small kind of confectionary, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. பிடிமண், s. A handful of sand. நானுன்வாயிற்பிடிமண்போடுகிறேன். I put a handful of sand in your mouth-spoken in anger. பிடியரிசி, s. Handfuls of rice taken from the daily allowance, for charity. பிடியாள், s. A person seized or taken into custody. 2. As அமஞ்சியாள். பிடியெழுத்தாணி, s. A style in a handle, usually folding and with a knife. பிடிமானம், s. Affection, attachment, fondness, favoritism, அன்பு. 2. Relish, zest; a liking, பிரியம். 3. Acquisition, money amassed, தேட்டம். 4. Frugality, sparingness, parsimony, உலோபம். Rigidness, bigotry, pertinacity, perseverance, உறுதி. பிடிமானமில்லாமற்செலவுசெய்கிறான். He expends profusely. பிடியன், appel. n. [vul.] A pot that will hold any given quantity. 2. s. A female elephant, as பிடி. பிடிவாதம், s. Stubbornness, contumacy, pertinacity, perverseness, முரண்டு. 2. Firm determination--as of an enthusiast who tortures himself till the god complies with is request; persistence, strenuousness, விடாநிலை. 3. Unyieldingness, spitefulness, வைராக்கியம். பிடிவாதக்காரன், s. An obstinate, selfwilled person. பிடிவாதி, appel. n. As பிடிவாதக்காரன். பிடிவிட, inf. To let go one's hold or grasp. 2. To brood over and hatch, as birds or snakes, குஞ்சுபொரிக்க, &c. பொரிக்கறி, s. Fried curry. பொரிமா, s. Flour of parched rice. பொரிமாதூவுதல், v. noun. Sprinkling the flour of parched rice as on curries. பொரியரிசி, s. Parched rice. பொரியுண்டை--பொரியுருண்டை, s. A cake ball of fried rice. பொரிவிளங்காய்--பொரிவிளாங்காய், s.
