aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

uttrvu (p. 60) s. Permission, grant, leave (of superiors), விடுதலை. 2. A government order, கட்டளை. 3. Answer, reply, விடை. 4. A divine permission suggested in dreams, or revealed by inspiration, தேவோத்தரவு. அவனுக்குக்கதிர்காமத்திற்குப்போகஉத்தரவுகிடைத் தது. He has obtained divine permission to go on a pilgrimage to Cathirgamam (a place sacred to Soobramania). உத்தரவுகேட்க, inf. To ask leave. உத்தரவுகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission. உத்தரவுசெய்ய, inf. To grant permission, privileges, &c. உத்தரவுசொல்ல, inf. To give leave. உத்தரவுச்சீட்டு, s. A passport, permit, விடுதலைப்பத்திரிகை. 2. A certificate of right, permission, privilege, authority, அதிகாரப்பத்திரிகை. உத்தரி, s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) உத்தரி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To make satisfaction, indemnify, compensate, atone for, expiate, ஈடுசெய்ய. 2. To bear, sustain, experience, to endure what is deserved, சகிக்க. 3. To pay debts, liquidate, to give satisfaction, கடன்செலுத்த. 4. To reply to, answer, state arguments on one's behalf, நியாயங்காட்ட. 5. To guarantee, உத்தரவாதஞ்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To suffer by disease, poverty, age, &c., அழுந்த. வியாதியிலேகிடந்துத்தரிக்க, To lie suffering in disease. சமுசாரப்பொறுப்பையுத்தரிக்க. To sustain the burden of a family. நாலுபேர்சமுகத்திலேயுத்தரித்தாலல்லோதெரியும்.... The merit of the parties will appear by a public discussion. அவனிடத்திலிருந்தென்னாலுத்தரிக்கக்கூடாது. I could not (of cannot) endure to live with him. இந்தப்பாதகமெப்போதுதானுத்தரித்துத்தீரும். O! when will the effects of this enormity be done away by suffering. உத்தரிக்கப்படாதது, appel. n. That which is intolerable, insufferable. 2. That which cannot be expiated. உத்தரிக்கிறஸ்தலம், s. The Romish purgatory, a place of atonement or retribution. நியாயமுத்தரிக்க, inf. To state arguments, to argue. 2. To reply in argument. உத்தரிப்பு, v. noun. Sufferings, afflictions--as retribution for sins of former births, சகிப்பு.--Note. [among Christians.] Church-members, திருச்சபையார். சபையிருத்த, inf. To seat a company properly according to their respective rank, to keep them in order, &c. (Little used.) சபையிலிருந்துதள்ள--சபைக்குப்புறம் பாக்க, inf. To exclude or reject from society, to excommunicate. சபையேற, inf. To come before an assembly, to appear--as a performer, &c. 2. To join or mix in society. சபையேறினவன், s. A person accustomed to society. 2. A person of good manners, free from rusticity, &c. சபையுள்ளார், s. The chorus, or the chief singers, in a play, கூத்தாடிகட்கு உதவி யாய்ப்படிப்போர். (p.) சபைவளமை--சபைவண்மை, s. The authority or public acts of an assembly, சபையதிகாரம். (R.) சபையேற்ற, inf. The art of painting is but the habit or practice of the hand, and that of language is but the practice of the tongue. சித்திரம்பேசேல். Make no fanciful exaggerations. (Avv.) சித்திரகரணம், s. One of the five கரணம். See கரணம். சித்திரகவி, s. A curiously wrought poem. See திரிபங்கி. There are different kinds as-இரதபந்தம். A poem in the figure of a car. கோமூத்திரி. One written in the form of inter-linked curves. சதுரங்கபந்தம். One in the form of squares. சுழிகுளம். Verses written in a winding manner. நாகபந்தம். A poem in the form of intertwined snakes, &c. சித்திரக்காரன், s. A carver, painter. சித்திரகூடம், s. An ornamented or painted room, or hall with pictures, --as சித்திரசாலை.--Note. This term is applied to the temple at Chillumbram, and a mountain in Bundelcund where Rama abode in his exile. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A cunning or shrewd dwarfish person. (c.) சித்திரங்கொத்த--சித்திரம்வெட்ட, inf. To carve, sculpture, grave, &c., on a plain surface. சித்திரசொரூபம், s. An image, an idol, a carved statue, a picture. சித்திரதீபம், s. A painted candle or taper. சித்திரதீபம்போலிருந்து தியானிக்கிறான். He sits meditating, motionless as a painted taper. சித்திரத்தையல், s. Fancy needle work. 2. As சித்திரப்பாவை. சித்திரத்தேர், s. An ornamented car. சித்திரந்தீர--சித்திரந்தீட்ட, inf. To carve or engrave any figures on wood or stone. சித்திரப்படம், s. A picture. 2. (p.) Variegated, painted or printed cloth, எழுத் துப்புடவை. சித்திரப்படாம், s. Veriegated, painted cloth. 2. A book of pictures, folds of paintings for amusement. (p.) சித்திரப்பதிமை--சித்திரப்பதுமை, s. A doll, statue, a puppet. சித்திரப்பா, s. As சித்திரகவி. சித்திரப்பாவை, s. A portrait or picture of a person or persons, real or imaginary, a carved figure. (நன்.) சித்திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A picture, a portrait. சித்திரப்பூம்பட்டாடை, s. Flowered silk cloth. (c.) சித்திரப்பேச்சு, s. Artful speech, cunning, jesting shrewdness. சித்திரமண்டபம்--சித்திரச்சாலை, s. A painted chamber or hall. சித்திரமெழுத, inf. To draw a picture, to paint, to sketch. (c.) சித்திரவெழுத்து, s. Elegant, nice, beautiful writing; caligraphy. 2. Variegated or fancy painting. 3. An anagram, as ஞிமிறு for மிஞிறு. சித்திரரேகை, s. Ornamental lines drawn on the body of a person. 2. One of the lines in the hand. 3. The wife of Kuvéra, குபேரன்மனைவி. சித்திரர்--சித்திரக்காரர், s. Fancy painters, portrait painters, limners, embroiderers. 2. Artizans, carvers, sculptors, engravers, சிற்பர். 3. Carpenters, தச்சர். சித்திரவதை--சித்திராக்கினை, s. Cutting and slashing in battle, prolonged butchery, cutting off member after member. 2. Ingenious and varied torture in inflicting death. (c.) சித்திரவித்தாரன், s. One artful, clever, or dexterous; one fluent in speech. (p.) சித்திரவித்தை, s. The art of fancypainting, sculpture, carving, engraving, &c. சித்திரவேலைக்காரர், s. Bushes, as intercepting sight, or as a place of concealment, lurking place, &c., Compare குழைமறைவு. செடியொண்ட, inf. To hide one's self under a bush. செடியன், s. taṇṭu (p. 223) s. Stick, cudgel, bludgeon, staff of an ascetic, சன்னியாசித்தடி. 2. A club, as the weapon of Yama, and others, தண்டா யுதம். 3. Oar, paddle; also a setting pole, சவளமரம் (c.) 4. The Indian lute, வீணை. 5. Gemini of the Zodiac, மிதுனராசி. 6. A tube, or any thing tubular, துணையுடைப்பொ ருள். 7. Bambu, மூங்கில். 8. Palankeen. தண் டிகை. 9. Chamelion, பச்சோந்தி. 1. Weapons, ஆயுதப்பொது. 11. (c.) Army, troops, train, சேனை. 12. Petal of a flower, பூவிதழ். 13. Ridge, embankment in fields, causeway, வரம்பு. 14. (c.) The small gristly protuberance of the ear, the right being, ஆண்தண்டு, the left, பெண்தண்டு, செவித்தண்டு. 15. Stalk, stem, தாள். 16. [in combin.] Stands of a lamp, candlestick, விளக்குத்தண்டு. 17. The bridge, or bone of the nose, மூக்குத் தண்டு. 18. A frame for carrying images on men's shoulders, வாகனத்தண்டு. 19. Membrum virile, ஆண்குறி. (indecent.) தண்டிலேபோனால் ரண்டிலேஒன்று. Enlisting in the army is a doubtful step. தண்டாகாரம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The arranging of sea-shells (which are used for numbers) in a line beginning with units up to tens, hundreds, &c., or numbers placed one after another according to their local value-oppos. to சர்ப்பாகாரம். தண்டாயுதம், s. The ear of a great, or divine person. திருத்தொண்டர், s. (plu.) Servants of the deity, especially sixty-three devotees of Siva. திருத்தொண்டு, s. Meritorious services performed to a deity. திருநடனம், s. See திருக்கூத்து. திருநயனம், s. The eyes of deity or a holy person, as திருக்கண். திருநாமக்கத்திரி, s.
