கலை
kalai (p. 96) s. A digit or one-sixteenth of the moon's diameter, a phasis, சந்திரன்பங்கு. 2. A minute portion of time equal to thirty காட்டை, or about eight seconds,காலநுட்பம். 3. The sixtieth part of a பாகை, or of onethirtieth of a zodiacal sign or one Indian hour, ஓர்பாகையிலறுபதிலொன்று. Wils. p. 2. KALA. 4. Tissues, சவ்வு. கலாநிதி, s. The moon, சந்திரன். கலைகுறைய, inf. To decrease as divinity in an idol by the neglect of pujah, &c. 2. (fig.) The arts and sciences, being sixty four, viz.: 1. அக்கரவிலக்கணம், the knowledge of spelling and reading, orthography, the science of reading. 2. இலி கிதம், caligraphy, penmanship. 3. கணி தம், the art of computation, arithmetic, the science of numbers. 4. வேதம், the Hindu Veda or law. 5. புராணம், a class of sacred books comprising the whole body of Hindu theology. 6. வியாகரணம், grammar. 7. நீதிசாத்திரம், jurisprudence. 8. சோதிடசாத்திரம், astronomy, including astroloy. 9. தருமசாத்திரம், ethics, moral philosophy, code of laws. 1. யோகசாத் திரம், the knowledge of abstract or silent devotion, rules for religious and abstract meditations. 11. மந்திரசாத்திரம், A division of the Vedas in the first practical part; it includes prayers and hymns addressed to particular deities and used at particular sacrifices, and it also comprehends incantations in religion. magic, medicine, and every other art or practice in which enchantments are used. 12. சகுணசாத்திரம், the science of prognosticating by omens and augury. 13. சிற்ப சாத்திரம், architecture and mechanics, symmetry, shapes in general including sculpture, painting features, lines, hair, &c., of the human system, and their various effects on life. 14.வைத்தியசாத்திரம், science of healing, physic, pharmacy and surgery which may include restoration to life of the dead, the reunion of severed limbs. &c. 15. உருவசாத்திரம், physiognomy, the art of discovering the temper and foreknowing the fortune by the features of the face, metoposcopy, chiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by inspecting the hand, சாமுத்திரிகம். 16. இதிகாசம், history, traditional accounts of former events, heroic history--as found in the Bharata and Ramayana. 17. காவியம், epic poetry --as சிந்தாமணி, நைடதம், &c. 18. அலங்காரம், science of rhetoric. 19. மதுரபாடணம், eloquence. 2. நாடகம், dramatic science. 21. நிருத்தம், the art of dancing. 22. சத்தப் பிரமம், directions for the modulation of sounds. 23. வீணை, the art of playing on the lute or stringed instruments. 24. வேணு. the art of playing on the flute or pipe. 25. மிருதங்கம், the art of beating the tambourine. 26. தாளம், the art of beating the cymbals. 27. அத்திரபரிட்சை, archery, the art of throwing darts. 28. கனகபரிட்சை, the art of an assayer in gold, &c. 29. இரதபரிட்சை, the art of driving chariots, charioteering. 3. கசபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of an elephant. 31. அசுவபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of a horse. 32. இரத் தினபரிட்சை, the art of examining and choosing gems, knowledge of precious stones. 33. பூமிபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the different kinds of soil, rules for determining by the surface, the nature and depth of soils, underneath which water is to be found, &c. 34. சங்கிராமவி லக்கணம், military art, tactics. 35. மல்ல யுத்தம், wrestling, pugilism, gymnastics, athletic art, boxing. 36. ஆகருடணம், the art of calling or summoning by enchantment. 37. உச்சாடணம், exorcism, dislodging devils or exciting them to injure others. 38. வித்துவேடணம், exciting hatred between parties by magical spells-one of the eight performances of enchantment. 39. மதனசாத்திரம், erotics, modus coeundi. 4. மோகனம், libidinous fascinations occasioned by enchantment. 41. வசீகரணம், the art of subduction by magic, the art of bringing one over to another's side or interest by enchant ment. 42. இரசவாதம், alchymy and chemistry. 43. காந்தருவவாதம் the knowledge of the condition of the celestial choristers. 44. பைபீலவாதம், the language of brute creatures from emmets upwards. 45. கவுத்துகவாதம், the art of restoring pleasure to a sorrowful mind. 46. தாதுவாதம், the knowledge of the pulse. 47. காரூடம். charms, incantations against poison. 48. நட்டம், information respecting any thing lost obtained by astronomical calculations. 49. முட்டி, information respecting any thing concealed in the palms of the hand (lit. in the fist.) 5. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், the art of entering into the air and becoming invisible. 51. ஆகாயமனம், the art of walking in the air. 52. பரகாயப்பிரவேசம், the power of leaving one's own body and entering another lifeless body or substance at pleasure. 53. அதிரிசயம், the power of making one's self invisible. 54. இந்திரசாலம், the art of conjuring, juggling, &c. 55. மகேந்திர சாலம், the art of performing wonders in heaven and earth. 56. அக்கினித்தம்பம், restraining the action of fire. 57. சலத் தம்பம், The art of counteracting the yielding quality of water so as to be able to walk on its surface. 58. வாயுத்தம்பம், the art of restraining the power of the wind. 59. திட்டித்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the eyes. 6. வாக்குத்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the mouth. 61. சுக்கிலத் தம்பம், the art of restraining the semen virile. 62. கனனத்தம்பம், the art of preventing the discovery of things concealed. 63. கட்கத்தம்பம், the art by which the power of sword or any other weapon is nullified. 64. அவத்தைப்பிர யோகம், the power of stationing the soul at pleasure, in any of the five stages in full energy by virtue of abstract devotion for converse with the deity. See அவத்தை. கலைநாதன், s. Argha, a divinity of the Jainas. கலைநாயகன், s. Budha, புத்தன். (திவாக.) கலைமகள்--கலைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati--as the patroness of the arts, சரச்சுவதி. (p.) கலைமலைவு, s. Any thing contrary to the shasters, சாஸ்திரவிரோதம். கலைமான், s. A stag. கலையானத்தி--கலையூர்தி, s. Durga, துர்க்கை, (p.) கலையினன், s. The moon, சந்திரன். (p.) கலையுணர்த்துவோன்--கலையுணர்பு லவன், s. Skanda, கந்தன் (p.) கலையேற, inf. To increase as divinity in an idol with the increase of pujah, incantations, &c. 2. [in reproach.] To become arrogant by prosperity, promotion, &c. கலையோத, inf. cūṉiyam (p. 201) s. Witchcraft, conjuring, sorcery, magic, enchantment, மாரணவித்தை, 2. Ceremonial defilement, அசுசி. 3. Vacuity, vacuum, chasm, nonentity, inanity, nonexistence of a being, quality, attribute, &c., இன்மை. 4. W. P. 854. S'OONYA. Emptiness, vacancy, void, பாழ். 5. Vanity, that which is unreal, unsubstantial, illusory, useless, unproductive, unpropitious, மரபை. 6. (Compare சன்.) Cipher in arithmetic, பூச்சியம்.--Note. The articles used in witchcraft (சூனியதிரவியம்), are seven, viz.: 1. எலும்பு, bones. 2. எட்டிவிறகு, wood of the poison-nut tree. 3. ஊமத்தம் வித்து, seeds of the datura. 4. வேப்பெண் ணெய், margosa-oil. 5. கரி, charcoal. 6. எருக் கம்பூ, flowers of the asclepias gigantea. 7. பாம்பு முள்மாலை, garland of the vertebra of the cobra-de-capella. சூனியகதி, s. A section in the poem of பிரபுலிங்கலீலை. சூனியக்காரன், s. fem. சூனியக்காரி.) A wizard, sorcerer, enchanter. சூனியம்பண்ண--சூனியஞ்செய்ய, inf. To be witch, to work witchcraft. 2. To injure, destroy, defile, annihilate, ruin. சூனியதிசை, s. The S. E. point of the compass, bring by some astrological or other influence deemed unpropitious. 2. The direction or side in which the breath does not pass from the nostril, right or left, at any given time. See. சரம். சூனியநிதி, s. A phasis of the moon, which, when a similar one occurs in the same month, is regarded as unpropitious, the other being propitious. சூனியத்துவம், s. Vacuity, emptiness, &c.,--as சூனியம், 4, 5, 6, which see. சூனியநாள், s. An unpropitious day. See கிழமைச்சூனியம். சூனியமனை, s. Bewitched ground. சூனியமாதம், s. Unpropitious months, viz.: மாசி, ஆடி, புரட்டாதி, மார்கழி, (c.) சூனியமாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To lie waste, to be desolate. சூனியமெடுக்க, inf. To remove the evil ascribed to whichcraft. சூனியம்வைக்க, inf. To bury bewitched articles for the injury of some one. சூனியமாய்ப்போக, inf. To be annihilated. 2. To be useless, unprofitable. 3. To be degenerate, to be ruined--as சுத் தசூனியமாய்ப்போய்விட்டான். சூனியவாதம், s. Atheism as a system, நாஸ்திகமதம். சூனியவாதி, s. An atheist. 2. (c.) As சூ னியக்காரன். சூனியவித்தை, s. Witchcraft, as சூனி யம். சூனியன், s. A lame person, a cripple, முடவன். (சது.) விவேகசூனியன்--ஞானசூனியன், s. One who has no wisdom, no wit; a fool. சூனியோபாதானம், s. [in Hindu Theology] Nonentity--as the material cause of created beings and things; nothing, considered as a principle from which the visible universe came into existence. See மயோபாதானம். pēy (p. 336) s. A devil, goblin, fiend, as பிசா சம். 2. [in combin.] Wild, as plants or trees, காட்டுக்கடுத்த. 3. Evil, bad, vile, ferocious, கெட்ட. (c.) உலகத்துக்குஞானம்பேய் ஞானத்துக்குலகம்பேய்.... Wisdom is a devil to the world and vice versa. [prov.] பேய்க்குவேப்பிலைபோலே. As repugnant to one as Margosa leaves are to devils. பேய்போலேதிரிகிறது. Going about in eager search of gain. பேயத்தி, s. A species of fig-tree, Ficus d&ae;monum, L. பேயன், s. [fem. பேய்ச்சி, பேச்சி.] A demoniac. 2. A head-strong fool, a madman, பைத்தியகாரன். பேயன்வாழை, s. A kind of plantain, a medicinal fruit. பேயாட, inf. To whirl the head through possession. பேயாடி, appel. n. A conjurer. 2. A fortune-teller. பேயாட்ட, inf. [appel. n. பேயாட்டி.] To cause a person, to be possessed for the utterance of oracles. பேயாட்டம், v. noun. A devil's dance, பேய்க்கூத்து. [also பேயாட்டு.] 2. Fiendishness, ferociousness, பேய்த்தன்மை. 3. Confusion, disorder, கலக்கம். பேயாமணக்கு, s. A wild castor-oilplant. பேயாவிரை, s. A kind of wild ஆவிரை. பேயாழ்வார், s. One of the twelve Vaishnuva devotees. He composed a hundred verses of நாலாயிரபிரபந்தம், ஓராழ் வார். பேயுமிய, inf. [prov.] To suck the blood of a person--as a devil; either killing or greatly weakening him. பேயுள்ளி, s. Wild onion, ஓருள்ளி. பேயுறைந்தவீடு, s. A house haunted by devils. பேயெரிக்க, inf. To burn out a devil by magic. See எரி, (v.) பேயையுருவேற்ற, inf. [sometimes பே யேற்ற.] To cause a devil to possess a person. பேயோடாடி, appel. n. Siva, as dancing with devils, சிவன். பேயோட்ட--பேய்துரத்த, inf. appel. n. பேயோட்டி.] To exorcise. பேயோணான், s. The large kind of ஓணான் lizard. பேய்க்கண், s. Eyes, or looks of a demoniac. 2. Frightful eyes, அஞ்சத்தக் கவிழி. பேய்க்கண்டல், s. A tree. See கண் டல். பேய்க்கரும்பு, s. A wild and useless sugar-cane, Saccharum arundinaceum. பேய்க்காடு--பேயுறைந்தகாடு--பேய் மேய்ந்தகாடு, s. A jungle haunted by devils. பேய்க்குணம், s. An unsociable, peevish disposition. பேய்க்குப்படைக்க, s. To make offerings to devils; also used in cant. பேய்க்குறை--பேய்க்கோட்டாலை, s. Evil, disaster, &c., resulting from the malice of an unpropitiated devil. பேய்க்கூண்டு--பேய்ப்பள்ளி, s. A noted place where the black arts are said to be taught, மாயவித்தைபயிற்றுமோரிடம். பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, s. Coloquintida or bitter apple, Cucumis colocynthis. பேய்க்கோலம், s. A hideous, monstrous or diabolical appearance. பேய்ச்சத்தம், s. Hideous noise of devils, said to be heard in desert places in time of epidemics. பேய்ச்சிலை, s. An idol, a statue of a demon. பேய்ச்சுரை, s. A bitter variety of gourd. பேய்த்தக்காளி, s. A plant, Solanum Lycopersicum. பேய்த்தண்ணீர், s. [in cant.] Ardent spirits; (lit.) devil's water, சாராயம். பேய்த்தனம், s. Fiendishness, ferociousness, &c. பேய்த்தும்மட்டி, s. As பேய்க்கொம் மட்டி. பேய்த்தும்பை, s. A plant. See தும் பை. பேய்த்தேர், s. The mirage or vapor of the noonday-sun, said to be the chariot of devils. பேய்நரி, s. A mad fox. பேய்நாய், s. A mad dog. பேய்நிலை, s.
