ayr (p. 22) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அயர, v. a. To do, perform, execute, discharge duties, rites, &c., exercise, practise, செய்ய. In this meaning it seems commonly, associated with pleasant and gratifying sensations, as, விருந்தயர, to perform the rites of hospitality. 2. v. n. To faint, swoon, languish, தளர. 3. To lose the power of consciousness, as in faintness, drowsiness, sleep, &c., சோர. 4. To become weary, droop, இளைக்க. விளையாட்டயர்ந்தான். He has played. அவன்கண்ணயர்ந்ததைப்பார்த்து. Seeing him drowsy. To discern, distinguish, பகுத்தறிய. 3. To think, reflect or consider, meditate, contemplate, நினைக்க. 4. To feel, perceive by the touch, பரிசித்தறிய. 5. To learn, acquire knowledge, கற்றறிய. 6. oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. To be busy; to be useful. காரியமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak of a thing as important. காரியமாய்ப்போக, inf. To go on an errand. காரியமானபேச்சு, s. Important conversation; a speech well adapted to the occasion. காரியமுடிக்க, s. To accomplish, to execute. காரியமுடிப்பு, s. The sum and substance of a business, an affair, &c. காரியமுடிய, inf. to be accomplished --as an object; to terminate--as one's life, &c. காரியம்பலிக்க, inf. To succeed, காரி யஞ்சித்திக்க. காரியம்பார்க்க, inf. To do a business, to manage a business. காரியம்பெற, inf. To attain one's object. காரியம்பேதிக்க, inf. To change or alter--as an affair. 2. To be thwarted. காரியவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the effect is by metonymy, used for the cause, as in அலங்காரம். காரியவிசாரணை, s. Superintendence, supervision. காரியவிரோதம், s. Opposition in an undertaking, rivalry. காரியவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of an effect for the cause. காரியவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] The negation of a thing or event by the nonexistence of the effect, &c., or by the presence of contrary effects, ஓரலங்காரம். காரியாவத்தை--காரியாவஸ்தை, s. Subordinate, minor states or அவத்தை of the living soul, being five in காரியகேவலம், five in காரியசகலம். and five in காரியசுத்தம், and thus constituting fifteen காரியாவத்்தை. (சிவப்.) காரியானுமானம், s. [in logic.] A posteriori reasoning; inference from effect to cause--opposed to காரணானுமானம். (சிவ. சி.) காரிரத்தம்--காருன்னி s. A plant, ஆடு தின்னாப்பாலை. Aristolochia, L. 125) *

kīẕ (p. 113) s. Place or space, under, below, beneath, downward, low or nether; the bottom, கீழிடம். 2. The east, கிழக்கு. 3. A pit, a hole, பள்ளம். 4. The nether regions, the worlds below, கீழுலகம். 5. Forgetfulness, மறதி. 6. Bridle, reins, bit, கடிவாளம். 7. A low caste, கீழ்மக்கள். (p.) கீணர், s. [கீழ்நர்.] Low, mean people, the base, the vulgar, எளியோர். கீழது, s. That which is under or below; bottom. கீழதுமேலதாக்கிப்போட, inf. To overturn, upset, capsize; to overthrow, to defeat. கீழறுக்க, inf. To burrow, to excavate, to make a subterranean passage, to undermine, பூமியிற் சுரங்கஞ்செய்ய. 2. (fig.) To undermine, to injure by any underhand, clandestine means, சதிசெய்ய. கீழறை, s. An under-ground room, a cellar, நிலவறை. 2. A cavern, a cell, a hole or passage under ground, வளை. கீழாக, inf. To become depressed, to sink--as a stalk, a heap of muck, &c.; to deteriorate, to waste--as the body by use or disease; or as property, &c., தாழ் வடைய. கீழாக--கீழாய s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. To be subdued, to yield, to be submissive, to become inferior, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To be subject, to be subordinate, to submit to, அடங்க. 3. To be degraded, mean, base, இழிவுபட. கீழ்ப்படிய--கீழ்ப்பணிய inf. To submit, to yield, to obey. கீழ்ப்படியாத்தனம்--கீழ்ப்படியாமை, s. Disobedience, insubordination. கீழ்ப்படிவு, v. noun. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. These signs, as well as the கீழ்நோக் கினநட்சத்திரம், are favorable for planting esculent roots and digging wells. கீழ்மேற்றென்வடல், s. The east, west, north and south. 42)

kēvalam (p. 139) s. Singleness; what is simple or alone, தனிமை. 2. Uniqueness, entireness, the only one of its kind, exclusiveness, ஒருங்கு. 3. Freedom, liberation from births, supreme bliss, மோக்கம். Wils. p. 248. KEVALA. 4. Destitution, extreme indigence, இன்மை. 5. Emaciation, மெலிவு. 6. Danger, criticalness, crisis, மோசம், ஆக்கி ரமம். 7. Unconsiousness, either absolute or transient; one of the three degrees of consciousness of the soul, the other two being சகலம் and சத்தம். (See காரணகேவலம், and காரியகேவலம்--Note. The five காரியகே வலம்.) states (momentary, transient unconsciousness of the living soul) are, 1. கே வலசாக்கிரம். 2. கேவலசொப்பனம். 3. கேவல கழுத்தி. 4. கேவலதுரியம். 5. கேவலதுரியதீதம். கேவலந்தீர்வலியபகை. Absolute, deep-rooted hostility. (பார.) கேவலஞ்சாப்பாட்டுக்கில்லை. There is no food at all. (c.) கேவலமாய்க்கிடக்கிறான். He is dangerously ill. (c.) கேவலசினேகிதம், s. Tender love. கேவலமானசரீரம், s. A feeble or emaciated body. கேவலப்படுத்த, inf. To detract, derogate, disparage. கேவலஸ்தன், s. A poor, indigent person. 2. An emaciated person; one prostrated in health. கேவலாவத்தை, s. One of the three states of the soul--as கேவலம். 7. கேவலான்னுவயானுமானம், s. [in logic.] An argument in which the affirmative is demonstrated both the syllogistically and inductively. (சிவஞானபோ.) கேவலவெதிரேகாணுமானம், s. [in logic.] An argument in which the negative is proved by both the syllogistic and inductive processes. (சிவஞானபோ.) 61)

cakalam (p. 153) s. All, the whole, entireness, universality, அனைத்து. W. p. 879. SAKALA. --Note. உம் is commonly suffixed to the word or to the noun that follows it. 2. [in the Agamas.] The state of souls subject to the three [மலம்]. evils, and to transmigrations. (See சகலர்.) 3. Consciousness, and consequent active operations, of the soul, either absolute or partial; being the second of the three அவத்தை. (See காரணசகலம்.) Obs. The five காரியசகலம் states, (imperfect consciousness of the living soul) are 1. சகலசாக்கிரம். 2. சகலசொப் பனம். 3. சகலசுழுத்தி. 4. சகலதுரியம். 5. சகலதுரியா தீதம். சகலத்திற்கும் நானிருக்கிறேன். I will see to the whole. சகலத்திராளும். All persons, all men. (c.) சகலமும். All, the whole. சகலகலாவல்லவன், s. One skilled in the whole circle of the sciences, பலநூலறிந் தோன். சகலகுணசம்பன்னன், s. One rich in all good qualities, குணவான். used in epistolary addresses. சகலத்தியாகம், s. The relinquishment of all things for abstract devotion. சகலமங்கலை, s. Parvati wife of Siva, பார்வதி. சகலமோகினி, s. Maya, or the power of illusion in creation, personified as a female, obscuring the mind, &c., மாயை. சகலர், s. [in the Agama phil.] The third of the three classes of souls, such as, continue subject to births, and are obscured by the three மலம்; and when united with bodies, become wholly engrossed with the objects of sense Compare, பிரளயாகலர் and விஞ்ஞானகலர். சகலவியாபி, s.
