ayr (p. 22) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அயர, v. a. To do, perform, execute, discharge duties, rites, &c., exercise, practise, செய்ய. In this meaning it seems commonly, associated with pleasant and gratifying sensations, as, விருந்தயர, to perform the rites of hospitality. 2. v. n. To faint, swoon, languish, தளர. 3. To lose the power of consciousness, as in faintness, drowsiness, sleep, &c., சோர. 4. To become weary, droop, இளைக்க. விளையாட்டயர்ந்தான். He has played. அவன்கண்ணயர்ந்ததைப்பார்த்து. Seeing him drowsy. (பஞ். 8.) அயரப்போட--அயரவிட, inf. To let rest for a better opportunity, as thieves, till persons are less on their guard, or as persons in a law suit. அயர்ந்தநித்திரை, s. Deep sleep, profound sleep. அயர்ச்சி, v. noun. Forgetfulness, மறதி. 2. Languor, faintness, spiritlessness, உணர்வழிவு. 3. Laziness, drowsiness, சோம்பு. 4. Weakness, பலவீனம். 5. uṟngku (p. 67) கிறேன், உறங்கினேன், வே ன், உறங்க, v. n. To sleep, slumber, நித் திரைசெய்ய. 2. To become closed--as flowers, leaves, &c., by the absence of the sun, ஒடுங்க. 3. To become reduced, sluggish, drowsy, &c.--as by a journey, disease, want of food, &c., சோர. தையுமாசியும்வையகத்துறங்கு. In the months of January and February sleep in a house thatched with straw. உறக்கம், v. noun. Sleep, slumber, drowsiness, நித்திரை. 2. Suspension of the faculties whether by sleep, fainting, or otherwise, ஒடுக்கம். 3. Death, மரணம். ஓயுமாலுடனுறங்குமுலகுதந்தவனுறக்கம். The fainting of Brahma through weariness and confusion of mind. உறக்கத்தைத்தள்ள, inf. To avoid sleep. பொய்யுறக்கம், s. Slight sleep, gentle slumber. சோற்றுறக்கம், s. Sleep not deep or sound, such as may be experienced after taking food. 66)

kṉvu (p. 102) s. A dream, கனா. 2. Sleep, நித்திரை. 3. Stupor, drowsiness, bewilderment, மயக்கம். கனவிலுங்காக்காய்மலந்தின்னக்காணும். The crow even dreams of feeding on excrement. கனவிலுந்தீங்குநினையான். He will not think evil even in his dreams. கனவிலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will not falsify even in his dreams, he will not dream of falsifying. கனவிற்கண்டபொருள்கானலிற்கண்டபுனல். The substance of a dream is like the mirage of the arid desert. ஊமைகண்டகனவுபோல். Like the dreams of the dumb that cannot be disclosed-spoken of things improper or impossible to disclose. கனவின்பலன், s. The accomplishment of a dream. 2. The interpretation of a dream. கனவின்பலனைச்சொல்ல. To interpret dreams. கனவுகாண, inf. To dream. கனவுநிலையுரைத்தல், v. noun. The relation of dreams. கனவுநூல், s. A treatise which prescribes rules to interpret dreams. தீக்கனவு, s. A bad dream, either ominus or inauspicious in its character. நற்கனவு, s. A good dream. 45)

koṭṭāvi (p. 146) s. Gape, yawn, yawning, oscitation, வாயால்விடுநெட்டுயிர்ப்பு. கொட்டாவிகொள்ள--கொட்டாவிவிட, inf. To gape, to yawn, to oscitate. கொட்டாவிவிட்டதுபோற் கூற்றன் வரும்போது விட்டாவி போவதுவே மெய். When death comes, the soul (breath) leaves the body, as breath in gaping. எட்டாதகொப்பிலிருக்கின்றதேனுக்குஎட்டியெட் டிக்கொட்டாவிகொள்ளுமுடவரைப்போல். Like the lame who yawn and stretch forth their arms towards the honey on a distant branch. நித்திரைக்கொட்டாவி, s. Yawning from drowsiness. 32)

cuki (p. 192) s. A healthy person, நோயிலான். 2. A prosperous, wealthy person, செல்வன். 3. Luxury, sumptuousness, சுகபோகம். 4. Fruition, felicity, செழிப்பு; [ex சுகம்.] 5. A kind of pastry, சுகியம். (p.) சுகியாய்வளர்க்க, inf. To bring up a child, &c., tenderly, delicately. சுசியன், s. One given to pleasure, fond of show. 2. As சுகபோகி. நித்திரைச்சுகியன், s. One given to drowsiness. போசனச்சுகியன், s. A voluptuary, an epicure. 22)

cōkam (p. 212) s. (Sa. Soka.) Internal heat, loathing of food, nausea--supposed to be produced by the arrows of Kama, as one of the five symptoms of love-sickness, மன்மதன்கணைசெய்யுமவத்தை. 2. Languor, heaviness, lassitude, drowsiness, சோம்பல். 3. Fainting a swoon, loss of consciousness, சோர்வு. (c.) 4. Loss of personal consciousness and becoming identified with the deity. tāmacam (p. 233) --தாமதம், s. One of three qualities or principles in nature--that of darkness, ignorance, delusion, sluggishness, முக்குணத்தொன்று. (See குணம்.) W. p. 372. TAMASA. 2. A time of anger or passion. 2. As தாமதவேளை. தாமசன்--தாமதக்காரன், s. A slow, inactive person. தாமதப்பட, inf. To be delayed, to be detained. 2. To linger, to be tardy, to be reluctant. தாமதப்பல்லி, s. A lizard chirping in such a direction in the house as to denote delay, obstruction, misfortune. See வரத்துப்பல்லி. தாமதம்பண்ண, inf. To delay, to detain, to prolong, to retard. தாமதவேளை, s. [in astrology.] The division of the day--it being in three parts--which is most unfavorable for enterprize. 55) *

Last night my sleep was disturbed. அவனுக்கிப்பொழுதுதான்தூக்கந்தெளிந்தது. He has just awaked from sleep. தூக்கக்கலக்கம்--தூக்கமயக்கம், s. Sleepiness. (c.) தூக்கங்கொள்ள, inf. To give opportunity to sleep--as a disease in time of convalescence. 2. To faint or become dull --as a person in the height of disease. காற்றுத்தூக்கங்கொள்ளுகின்றது. The wind is dying away. தூக்கம்பிடிக்க, inf. To be drowsy, to be afflicted with sleepiness. தூக்கம்விட, inf. To put up hangings, curtains, festoons, &c., to make ornamental hanging work in metal, masonry, carving, &c., 2. To rouse from sleep, swooning, &c., to revive. 7)

tūngku (p. 252) கிறேன், தூங்கினேன், வேன், தூங்க, v. n. To hang, to hang on, to be suspended, cling to, தொங்க. 2. To be drowsy, to slumber, to sleep, துயில. 3. To be sluggish, inactive, idle, dull, slow, heavy, மந்தமாயிருக்க. 4. To nod, hang the head from drowsiness, தலைசாய. 5. To droop, as a person, or animal, through sorrow, hunger, &c., சோர. 6. To droop, as a plant, be withered, வாட. 7. (fig.) To be fixed, as a fortress, wall, ஓர்நிலை யாய்நிற்க. 8. To tarry, delay, loiter, hang about, தாமதிக்க. 9. To be drowsy and move the body from side to side, as an elephant, அசைவாட, (c.) தூங்கினவன்கன்றுசேங்கன்று. The calf, of the sleeper is but a bull-calf (having been changed while he slept). தூங்கணி, s. A jewel formed of hanging globules of gold and precious stones, தொங்கணி. தூங்கிப்போக, inf. To droop as a person, beast, plant, &;amc., வியாபாரந்தூங்கிப்போயிற்று. Trade is low, on the decline, &c. தாழ்வாரந்தூங்கிப்போயிற்று. The verandah is too low. தூங்காமை, v. noun. (neg.) Vigilance, Watchfulness. தூங்காவிளக்கு, s. A lamp burning day and night. தூங்கிசைச்செப்பல், s. A kind of melody of the metre called வெண்பா. தூங்கிசைத்துள்ளல், s. A melody of the கலிப்பா metre. தூங்கிசையகவல், s. A melody of the ஆசிரியப்பா, metre. தூங்கிருள்நடுநாள், s. Midnight, thick or abiding darkness. தூங்கிவிழ, inf. To nod through drowsiness. (c.) தூங்குபாலம், s. A floating bridge; sometimes தூக்குபாலம். தூங்குமஞ்சம், s. A hanging cot or bed. தூங்குமூஞ்சி, appel. n. A stupid, sleepy fellow. (c.) தூங்கல், v. noun. Dancing, கூத்து, 2. Drowsiness, &c.; used in all the meanings of the verb.

nittirai (p. 277) s. Sleep, drowsiness, repose. See தூக்கம். W. p. 467. NIDRA. அயர்ந்தநித்திரை, deep sleep; கள்ளநித்திரை, feigned sleep; சோற்றுநித்திரை, sleep from eating. (c.) நித்திரைதூக்கித்தூக்கியடிக்கிறது. Sleep causes him to nod. அவன்நித்திரைபோகிறான். He is sleeping. ஒத்தவிடத்தில்நித்திரைகொள். Sleep in a level place. (Avv.) நித்திராதேவி, s. pci (p. 289) s. Hunger, appetite, craving for food, one of the twelve causes of distress; burning from want of food in the stomach See உயிர்வேதனை. (c.) பசிருசிதேடாது, நித்திரைசுகந்தேடாது. Hunger seeks not dainties; drowsiness seeks repose. பல்லாடப்பசியாறும். Hunger is lessened by having something between the teeth. உம்முடையமுகத்தைப்பார்த்தாற்போலேபசிபோயிற்று. As soon as I saw your face, hunger left me i. e. I lost all sense of trouble. பசிகிடக்க, inf. [also பட்டிணிகிடக்க.] To starve. பசிகொள்ள, inf. To be hungry; to have a good appetite. பசிக்கொடுமை, s. mykkm (p. 344) --மயக்கு, s. Mental delusion, stupor, infatuation, stupidity, drowsiness, intoxication; aberration of mind from ignorance, fascination, fainting or other disturbing cause; a besotted state, உன் மத்தம். 2. Confusion in nature--as in the blending of sexes among animals or vegetables, கலப்பு. 3. [in gram.] Combination of letters, coalescence, சையோகம்; also உட னிலைமயக்கம், இடைநிலைமயக்கம். மயக்கமின்மை, v. noun. neg. Absence of delusion, infatuation, intoxication, &c. 2. Clearness of understanding, intellectual brightness, mental illumination, தெருளுடைமை. மயக்கம்பூணுதல்--மயக்குறல், v. noun.
