atiru (p. 11) --அதிர், கிறேன், அதிர்ந் தேன், வேன், அதிர, v. n. To shake, quake, as by an earthquake, he fall of a tree, or the rolling of chariots, கம்பிக்க. 2. To be startled, alarmed as by the sound of a cannon, the report of thieves, the prevalence of an epidemic, &c., thrill, நடுங்க. 3. To resound attended with a shock, as by thunder, by an earthquake; to sound as a drum, &c., reverberate, vibrate, roar as beasts, tinckle as bells or ornaments, ஆர வாரிக்க. பூமியதிரநடவாதபுண்ணியவான். A good man, one who is careful not to give offence. அதிர்குரல்முரசம். The loud sounding drum. பூமியதிரல், v. noun. An earthquake, trembling of the earth. அதிர், v. noun. Commotion, shaking, trembling, fear, நடுக்கம், 2. s. Sound, ஒலி. அதிர்வெடி--அதிர்வேட்டு, s. The explosion or report of small cannons, &c., to excite alarm. 2. (prov.) The cannon itself. அதிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Quaking, shaking, trembling as of the earth by an earthquake, thunder, or the fall of a tree &c., அசைவு. 2. Resonance, repercussion, concussion, reverberation, எதிரொலி. 3. Agitation, stir, நடுக்கம். 4. A great noise, a loud report, an explosion, பேரொலி. அதிர்ப்பு, v. noun. aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. upattiravam (p. 61) s. Affliction, tribulation, suffering either of mind or body, வேதனை. 2. Tyranny, oppression, national distress, whether by the seasons, epidemics, famine, the government, &c., கொடு மை. Wils. p. 154. UPADRAVA.--Note. This word is sometimes improperly spelt உபத்திரம். உபத்திரவகாலம், s. A time of distress, calamity. உபத்திரவப்பட, inf. To suffer, be in affliction. உபத்திரவப்படுத்த, inf. To afflict, distress. தேசோபத்திரவம், s. General and national distress. பசியுபத்திரவம், s. The suffering of hunger. வியாதியுபத்திரவம், s. Suffering from disease. மனோபத்திரவம், s. Distress of mind.

uruḷ (p. 65) --உருளு, கிறது, உருண்டது, உருளும், உருள, v. n. To turn about as a wheel, or dice, to roll, bowl, trundle, tumble over and over, revolve on a plane, spin or whirl--as a thrown discus, at right angles with the horizon, புரள. 2. To become round, grow globular, திரள. 3. (c.) To perish, die in numbers--as in battle, by an epidemic, &c.; to waste--as wealth, &c.; to become extinct, be exterminated, அழிய. உருண்டுபோவாய். ūẕi (p. 71) s. The periodical termination of a great age, or the time of the universal deluge and destruction of all things, the end of the world, உகமுடிவு. 2. A very long time, நெடுங்காலம். 3. (p.) Lifetime, உறைகாலம். 4. The earth, பூமி. ஊழிபெயரினுங்கலங்காருரவோர். Though the world should come to an end, the sages will not deviate from their purposes. ஊழியுள்ளளவும். Through all eternity, lit. to the end of an age. உனக்கூழிவர. may you die--an imprecation. நீடுழிவாழ்க. May you live long. ஊழிகாலம், s. A very long time, ages without number, நெடுங்காலம். (சத. 2.) ஊழிக்காய்ச்சல், s. An epidemic fever, or pestilence supposed to be produced by a malignant demon, தொத்து சுரம். ஊழிக்காற்று, s. A destructive wind that prevails at the end of the world, யுகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுங்காற்று. 2. A demon, or bad vapor that causes epidemic diseases, pestilence, &c., விஷக்காற்று. ஊழித்தீ, s. The deluge, or submarine fire, usually described as a mare dwelling in the sea and breathing fire, by which, at the end of every quadruple age, the fire is consumed, வட வைத்தீ. ஊழிநீர், s. The water which prevails at the last deluge, described as rain poured down from the seven species of clouds united, also as the water of the circumfluent sea, உலகமுடிவிலுண்டாகுஞ்ச லப்பிரளயம். ஊழிநோய், s. A pestilence induced by a malignant demon, தொத்து வியாதி. ஊழியூழிகாலம், s. From age to age, eternity. 2)

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. kāṟṟu (p. 107) s. Wind, a breeze, the air, atmosphere, வாயு. 2. The wind that passes downward, அபானவாயு. 3. The fifteenth lunar asterism, or nacshatra, சோதிநட்சத் திரம். 4. A ghost, an apparition, a spectre, an evil spirit.--Note. This word is from the third person neut. sing. of a symbolic verb from கால், air. காற்றுள்ளபோதே தூற்று. Winnow while the wind blows; i.e. attend to a thing at a favorable time. காற்றசைகிறது, The wind moves (after a lull). காற்றடங்கிற்று--காற்றமர்ந்தது. The wind has subsided. காற்றடிக்கிறது, The wind blows. 2. The storm beats. காற்றருந்த, inf. To feed on wind--as snakes. 2. [vul.] To be gaping, listless, idle. காற்றாடவைக்க, inf. To air a thing; to expose it to the wind. காற்றாடி, s. A wind-whirl, a child's toy, கறங்கு. 2. A paper kite, காற்றாடிப்பட் டம். 3. (fig.) A changeable person, a waverer, நிலையிலி. காற்றாடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cool, to refresh one's self. காற்றின்சகாயன், s. Fire, lit. the helper of wind; that which invites wind for winnowing, as a fire. காற்றுக்கழிய--காற்றுப்பறிய, inf. To break wind. காற்றுக்காலம், s. The windy season. காற்றுக்கிளம்பிற்று. [prov.] Leeward--used when a current of offensive effluvia is conveyed to one by the wind--as by a fisher-woman in passing, &c., காற்றுப் பக்கம். 2. Neglect of duty, சோம்பல். 3. Random, chance, கண்டபாடு. காற்றுவீசுகின்றது, The wind blows. காற்றெழும்புகிறது. The wind rises. காற்றொதுக்கு, s. A shelter from the wind, காற்றடைப்பு. காற்றோட்டி, s. A kind of shrub yielding bitter fruit of an unpleasant smell, said to expel flatulency. It is fried and eaten on some fasts as a mode of selfmortification, ஓர்முட்செடி, Obtuse-leaved hibiscus. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. ஊதைக்காற்று--பனிக்காற்று, s. A cold wind, in the dewy season. எதிர்காற்று--எதிர்க்காற்று, s. A contrary wind. கீழ்காற்று, s. East wind. குளிர்காற்று, s. A cold wind. சிறுகாற்று, s. A gentle wind. சுழல்காற்று--சூறைக்காற்று, s. A whirlwind. சுழிக்காற்று, s. A whirl-wind, limited to a small space, and tearing up trees, &c., that stand in its way. தீக்காற்று, s. A scorching, blasting wind. தென்காற்று, s. South wind. நச்சுக்காற்று, s. A noxious air, miasma --as in time of epidemics. நல்லகாற்று, s. A favorable wind. பெருங்காற்று, s. A strong or violent wind. மேல்காற்று, s. West wind. வடகாற்று, s. North wind. 2)

kulai (p. 127) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. [cor. of குரை.] To bark--as a dog, நாய்குலைக்க. 2. To snap, snarl--as captious or sullen people, கடிந்துபேச. குலையாதநாய் குதிங்காலைக்கடிக்கும். A dog which does not bark, may bite the heel. குலைத்துக்காட்ட, inf. To give notice (of thieves, &c.); to show--as dogs, by barking. 2. To point out demons. especially in time of epidemics--as black dogs, whose sight is supposed to be keener than that of others. 3. To snarl out, to vociferete. குலைப்பு, v. noun. kuḷir (p. 131) -- குளிரு, கிறது, ந்தது, குளிரும், குளிர, v. n. To be cold, chilly, frigid; to be cold to the touch; to be moist, damp, குளிர்கொள்ள. 2. To be cool, to be refreshed, குளிர்ச்சியுற. 3. To be refreshing, gratifying, pleasant, cheering to the touch, sight or hearing; to be engaging, attactive, benignant--as the countenance, இதமாக. 4. To be appeased, consoled, comforted, சாந்தமுற. 5. To die--spoken of death in time of epidemies, when fear of the avenging goddess prevents the use of the proper word, வசூரிமுதலியவியாதியால்மரிக்க. அப்பாவென்றால்உச்சிகுளிருமா. Will merely saying அப்பா afford relief? i. e. not mere words, but actions are necessary. அவன்ஒரு குளிர்ந்தகொள்ளி. He is a coldblodded persons; a man of a fair speech, but an enemy at heart. இப்பொழுதுஎனக்குமனங்குளிர்ந்தது. I am now refreshed, satisfied, gratified, appeased, &c. உச்சிகுளிர்ந்தது. The head has been cooled or refreshed--as on hearing joyful intelligence, &c. எனக்குக்குளிருகின்றது. I feel cold. என்வயிறுகுளிர்ந்ததுபோல உன்மாளிகையுங்குளிர வேண்டும். May you and your family be refreshed as I have been--an expression of thanks for favors received. சரீரமெல்லாங்குளிர்ந்தது. The whole body is refreshed. குளந்தைஅம்மைவார்த்துக்குளிர்ந்துபோயிற்று. The child has died of small-pox. குளிரப்பண்ண--குளிரவைக்க, inf. To cool wines, spirits, &c. 2. To refresh, to satisfy the appetite, the mind, &c.; to regale, to oblige, to appease. கண்குளிரப்பார்த்தான். He feasted his eyes with a gratifying sight. காதுகுளிரக்கேட்டேன். My ears were refreshed by hearing. நிலங்குளிரமழைபெய்தது. It rained abundantly so as to cool the earth. மனங்குளிரக்கொடுத்தேன். I gave him as much as he desired. குளிர்ந்தகிரணம், s. A gratifying light, lustre, &c.--as of the moon, a gem, &c. குளிர்ந்தகுரல், s. A pleasant voice in singing. குளிர்ந்தசரீரம், s. A cool temperament of body. குளிர்ந்தநிழல், s. Refreshing shade. குளிர்ந்தநிறம், s. A gay, cheerful, fine color. குளிர்ந்தநீர், s. cool water. 2. Cooled water after boiling, &c. 3. Good water in gems. குளிர்ந்தபார்வை, s. Engaging, attractive, benignant looks. குளிர்ந்தமுகம், s. Benignant expression of countenance. குளிர்ந்தபூமி, s. A cool climate. குளிர்ந்தபேச்சு--குளிர்ந்தவசனம்--கு ளிர்ந்தவார்த்தை, s. Pleasant, comforting, gratifying language. குளிர்ந்தவாசனை, s. Refreshing odors. குளிர்ந்தமனம், s. A calm, composed mind. 2. A benevolent mind. 3. A pleasant temper, an obliging disposition. குளிர்ந்தபரிமளம், s. A kind of native arsenic, சீதாங்கபாஷாணம். குளிர்ந்துகொல்லி, s. A cold blooded person. குளிர்ந்துகிடக்க--குளிர்ந்துபோக, inf. To become cold--as water after boiling. 2. To die--used auspiciously in time of epidemics. குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. [imp. குளிர்த்தி. vul. குளுத்தி.] Coolness, refrigeration, சீதளம். 2. That which is refreshing, pleasant, gratifying, appeasing; cooling offerings, திருத்திசரம். கண்ணுக்குக்குளிர்ச்சி. Refreshing to the eyes. தெய்வத்துக்குக்குளிர்த்திசெய்தான். He gave cooling fruits to appease the goddess or demon. குளிர்ச்சிப்பண்டம்--குளிர்மைப்பண் டம், s. Any thing that is cooling, refrigerative. குளிர்ச்சியானசாப்பாடு--குளிர்மையான சாப்பாடு, s. Refreshing or cooling kinds of food. குளிர்ச்சியாயிருக்க, inf. To be cool, refreshing to the system. குளிர்ப்பிக்க--குளிர்விக்க, inf. v. a. To cool, to refrigerate; to refresh with water, perfumes, &c.; to gratify the mind, sight, &c., குளிரச்செய்ய. 8)

koḷḷai (p. 147) s. Robbery, plunder, pillage. devastation, depredation, sacking, பிறர்பொருளைக்கவர்கை. 2. Excess, abundance, copiousness, plenty, மிகுதி. (சது.) 3. An epidemic, a pestilence, a plague, பெருவாரி நோய்; [ex கொள்.] கொள்ளைக்கடிக்கப்போனேன். [prov.] I have been working without pay, for that bad man--spoken as an imprecation. கொள்ளைக்கும்ஊழிக்குந்தப்பு. Flee from devastating armies, and from epidemics. கொள்ளைக்குப்போனாலுங் கூட்டாகாது. One who intends to pillage, should not associate with others. கொள்ளாகொள்ளை, s. [prov.] Great abundance, plenty. கொள்ளைகொடுக்க, inf. To be plundered. 2. To allow plunder--as a general to his troops. கொள்ளைகொள்ள, inf. To plunder, to ravage, to spoil. 2. To usurp, to monopolize. 2. (p.) To engross the mind, affections, desires, &c. கொள்ளைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Epidemic fever. கொள்ளைக்காரர், s. Plunders, murderers. கொள்ளைநோய், s. As கொள்ளை. 3. கொள்ளைபோக--கொள்ளையாய்ப்போக, inf. To be plundered. கொள்ளையடிக்க--கொள்ளையாட--கொ ள்ளையிட--கொள்ளையெடுக்க, inf. To rob, plunder, sack, pillage, devastate. 2. To commit burglary. கொள்ளையாய்க்காய்க்க, inf. To yield abundantly--as trees, &c. (c.) கொள்ளையாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be in a state of devastation--as a town. 2. To be abundant. கொள்ளையுடைமை--கொள்ளைப்பொருள், s. Booty, spoil. ஒருகொள்ளை, s. A great abundance, or great number. See ஒரு. 22)

kōtāri (p. 150) s. [prov.] Spasmodic cholera, வாந்திபேதி. 2. Any epidemic, a pestilential disease--as small-pox, scarlet fever, &c., கொள்ளை நோய். கோதாரிக்கழிச்சல், s. Epidemic diarrh&oe;a; cholera. கோதாரிக்காய்ச்சல், s. An epidemic fever. 38) *

canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. curuṭṭu (p. 196) கிறேன், சுருட்டினேன், வேன், சு ருட்ட, v. a. To roll up, coil, curl, infold, twist, சுருளச்செய்ய. 2. To form waves as the sea, அலைசுருட்ட. (p.) 3. (fig.) To take up all at once, to sweep off, முழுதுங்க வர. (c.) [ex சுருள், v.] சுருட்டிக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To roll and fasten leaves together as red ants and other insects. 2. To get business, persons, &c., under one's own control. சுருட்டிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry off, to pilfer, to remove by stratagem, கொள்ளையிட. சுருட்டிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To reduce a person--as disease. 2. To pinch the stomach, as excessive hunger, பசியினால் வருந்த. (c.) சுருட்டிமுடிக்க, inf. To fold and tie the hair. சுருட்டிவாங்க, inf. To have spasms. 2. To oppress, to be extortionate. சுருட்டிவாரிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry off, to sweep off, as an epidemic, inundation, a whirl-wind, fire, thieves, &c. (c.) சுருட்டிவைக்க, inf. To roll up and place mats, sails, &c. சுருட்டிமடக்க, inf. To pilfer. 2. To overcome in a struggle, debate, &c. 3. To win--as a suitor. சுருட்டியடிக்க, inf.
