aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The art of attending to eight things or studies at once, ஒரேவேளையிலெட்டுக்காரியத்தைச் சிந்திக்கை. அஷ்டாவதானி, s. One who is skilled in the above art. அஷ்டைச்சுவரியம், s. Essentials for prosperity, or eight kinds of wealth, எண்வகைச்செல்வம். See ஐசுவரியம். 6)

iylpu (p. 48) s. Nature, property, quality, natural or essential quality, instinct, genius, குணம். 2. Conduct, a proper course of conduct, good character, ஒழுக்கம். 3. A prescribed rule, order, method, custom, habit, முறை. 4. State, condition, circumstances, situation, rank, class, &c.--as applicable to man, brute, vegetable, &c., தன்மை. 5. Propriety, regularity, legitimacy, genuineness, நேர்மை. 6. Simplicity, plainness, honesty, frankness, இயற்கை. இயல்பினானில்வாழ்க்கைவாழ்பவன். The householder who discharges his domestic duties with propriety. (குறள்.) இயல்பானபகை, s. What is naturally uncongenial or counteracting-as medicine to the disease. இயல்பானபகையாளி, s. A foe by nature--as the cat to birds. இயல்புதப்பிப்போக, inf. To be dishonest, to act dishonestly, live disorderly, go beyond the proper bounds. இயல்புப்புணர்ச்சி, s. [in grammar.] Combination of words suffering no change, விகாரங்களின்றிப்பதம்புணர்வது--as பொன்மணி. (p.) நல்லியல்புடையோன், s. One of a good nature. தீயியல்புடையோன், s. One of a bad nature. 11)

uṟu (p. 67) கிறேன், உற்றேன், வேன், உற, v. n. To be, to exist, உண்டாக. 2. To feel, experience, suffer, enjoy, experience sensations--as heat, cold, பரிசிக்க. 3. To be in contact, to join closely, unite with, combine, கூட. 4. To happen, occur, befall -- as a good, or evil, சம்பவிக்க. 5. To accrue--as riches, சேர. 6. To profit, turn to account, பயனுற. 7. To obtain, கிடைக்க. 8. To arrive at, reach, வர. 9. To belong to peculiarly, to be appropriate, பொருந்த. 1. To be situated at, or be in a place, இரு க்க. 11. To dwell, reside, தங்க. (p.)-Note. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I was rejoiced. பயமுற்றேன். I grew frightened. நோயுறும்போது. When sickness befalls-பாவியருறும்பழி. The evil endured by the wicked for their sins. (இராமா.) சொல்லலுற்றேன்--சொல்லுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. uṟpaṉam (p. 69) --உற்பன்னம், s. Birth, production, origin, பிறப்பு. Wils. p. 143. ULPANNA. 2. Excellence, exquisiteness. உத்தமம் 3. Reality, genuineness, உண்மை. 4. Visible manifestation--as of a deity, of the power of incantation; occular proof of medicinal virtue, &c. தோற்றம். 5. [vul. for விற்பன்னம்.] Learning, கல்வி. (Rott.) உன்வியாதிக்குஇதுஉற்பனம். This is the proper medicine for your disease. உற்பனமாகக்கிரகிக்கிறது. To comprehend well, to understand easily. அவரிடத்திலுற்பன்னமானகாரியங்களுண்டு. He possesses extraordinary skill, he is a virtuoso, skilled in the arts. உற்பன்னமானமருந்து, s. Medicine of extraordinary qualities. 2) *

uḷ (p. 67) . The root of a symbolic verb signifying being, which, in poetic usage is complete in its inflections--as உளேன், or உள்ளேன், I exist, &c. 2. The third person singular of the inferior class (see உண்டு), and the participle with its appellatives are the only parts in common use. --Note. The participle and its derivations are joined to nouns to form adjectives and appellatives and to show the possession of the quality indicated--as உள்ளகாரியம், a real thing, fact. உளர். They are--as அவருளர். உள்ள, rel. part. Existing, which exists, is real, genuine, essential. உள்ளகதை, s. A real story, an authentic narrative, a fact, a reality. உள்ளது, appl. n. The truth, it is true, உண்மை. 2. That which exists, உண் டானது. உள்ளதற்குள். Among the few there are. உள்ளதற்குள்ளேயிவன்சமர்த்தன். He is the most competent among them. 2. He is tolerably clever. உள்ளதுசொல்லு. Speak the truth. உள்ளதுரியதெல்லாம். The whole of one's property to the last mite. உள்ளதைமறையாதே. Conceal not the truth. உள்ளதோஇல்லதோ? It is true or not? உள்ளநாளுள்ளமட்டும். All this time, or always--a phrase indicating dissatisfaction. உள்ளபடி. Truly, really as to right, according to the actual state. உள்ளபடிமுடியும். It will end right. உள்ளபணிவிடைசெய்வேன். I will do whatever service you have. என்னாயிசுள்ளநாள்மட்டும். As long as I live. உள்ளபசுமை, s. Real truth, ஐய மற்றஉண்மை. 2. Real prosperity, மெய்வா ழ்வு. உள்ளபிள்ளை, [vul. prov.] A child of rich parents--the opposite to வறிய பிள்ளை. உள்ளமை, s. [prov. prop. உண்மை.] Truth, reality, sincerity, probity. உள்ளவன், s. A moneyed man, a rich person, பொருளுடையவன். 2. A proprietor, உரியவன். குணமுள்ளமனிதன், s. A man of good disposition. பணமுள்ளவன், s. A man of money. உள்ளளவும், [prop. உள்ளவளவும்.] For ever, as long as aught shall be, the whole period of the world's existence, இருக்குமட்டும்.--Note. In this and similar sentences formed with this word, terms of universality are implied. நானுள்ளளவுமும்மைப்பிரியேன். I will not forsake you as long as I live. உள்ளார், s. Those who are (present, &c.), இருப்போர். மண்ணுள்ளார், s. Terrestrial inhabitants. விண்ணுள்ளார், s. The celestials. 53)

kru (p. 96) s. F&oe;tus, embryo, pregnancy, கருப்பம். 2. Yolk of an egg, முட்டைக்கரு. 3. Genius, ingenuity, judgment, கருத்து. 4. A brazier's mould, matrice, கம்மியர்கட்டுங்கரு. 5. (p.) The substance or contents of a thing, உட்பொருள். 6. The germ, வித்தின்கரு. 7. Color, tint, tinge, நிறம். 8. Middle, நடு. (சது.) 9. Height, hillock, மேடு. 1. A name of கருப்பொருள். (See பொருள்.) 11. A prong, barb, tooth, tine, spike, ஆயுதத்தின்பல். 12. Ingredients for magical preparations employed to fascinate, injure or destroy a person, viz.: plants, roots, skins, bones, flesh, &c., அட்டகருமக்கரு. 13. Immature egg in a fowl, முட்டை. கருக்கட்ட--கருப்பிடிக்க, inf. To form a mould. கருக்கரைய, inf. To suffer abortion. கருக்காய், s. Young and immature fruit, பிஞ்சுநெல். (குறள்). 2. Thin and immature grains in corn ears, பதர். கருக்குழி, s. The womb, the uterus, கருப்பாசயம். கருக்கூட, inf. To impregnate. கருக்கூடு, s. The ovary, that part of the body in which impregnation is performed. கருக்கூட்ட, inf. To form plans, to scheme, contrive, plan, யோசனைசெய்ய. கருக்கொள்ள--கருப்பற்ற, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated, to fecundate--as brutes of vegetables, to fill-as clouds with water, கருப்பங்கொள்ள. கருக்கொண்டமேகம், s. A teeming cloud. கருத்தங்க, inf. To be conceived, to be formed--as conception, கருப்பந்தங்க. கருத்தரிக்க, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated--as animals in general. கருத்தெரியாதவன், s. An unwise man. கருநூல், s. A treatise on enchantment. கருப்பை, s. The matrix, the womb. கருப்பொருள், s. The second class of பொருள், which treats of the beings, things, &c., peculiar to different countries. They are of fourteen kinds from gods down to the employments of men, அந்தந்தநிலங்களைச்சார்ந்தபொருள். See பொருள். கருமாரி, s. Extremity, difficulty in child-birth, பிரசூதவேதனை. கருமாரிப்பட்டை, s. A bark used medicinally in difficult child-birth. கருவழிக்க, inf. To destroy the f&oe;tus, to cause abortion, கருப்பமழிக்க. கருவழிய, inf. To perish--as the f&oe;tus, to miscarry, to suffer abortion. கருவழிவு, v. noun. miscarriage, abortion, கருப்பஅழிவு. கருவறிய, inf. To come to years of discretion. கருவறிந்தவன்--கருவாளி--கருவு ள்ளவன், s. An ingenious person, a genius, ஊகித்தறிபவன். கருவறுக்க, inf. To exterminate a family, &c., to ruin one's property,அடி யோடுகெடுக்க. கருவாமுப்பு, s. Salt-petre, வெடி யுப்பு. கருவிரிய, inf. To ear, to shoot into ears, கதிர்விரிய. கருவிரிந்தபயிர், s. The earing corn. கருவுயிர்க்க, v. n. To bring forth young either human or brute, ஈன. கருவுளமைப்பு, s. The six things incident to sentient beings on assuming corporeal forms, கருவில்நியமிப்பு, viz.: 1. பெறுதல் or பேறு, getting, gain. 2. இழத்தல் or இழவு, losing or loss. 3. இன் பம், pleasure. 4. பிணி or இடையூறு, disease, affliction, mishap, &c. 5. மூப்பு, old age. 6. சாக்காடு, death. To these some add பிரித்தல், separation, removal to a distance; and பிரிவிலாதிருக்கை, continued association. கருவெடுக்க, inf. To have a mind for a thing--as for labor, food, learning, &c., to be inclined to. கருத்துப்பிசகு, s. A wrong construction, or erroneous interpretation. கருத்துப்பிரிய, inf. To occur to the mind--as a good idea, plan, &c. 2. to be understood, comprehended, &c.--as an idea. கருத்துப்பொருள், s. Mental objects as opposed to காட்சிப்பொருள்--an object of sense. கருத்துரை, s. A commentary giving the scope of the text, பொழிப்புரை. கருத்துரைக்க, inf. To give the scope or substance of the text as a commentator, &c. கருத்துவெளிப்படுத்த, inf. To disclose one's intention, to make known one's opinion, &c. கருத்தெடுக்க, inf. To devise, invent a scheme, lay a project, discover the sense of a passage, to find out a meaning, கருத்தைக்காண. கருத்தொட்ட, inf. To consture a difficult, passage, to put a construction on a passage, 2. To construe by supplying what is wanting. 3. To wrest or distort an author's meaning. 4. To meditate (as on the Deity), to apply the mind closely. வஞ்சகக்கருத்து, s. A deceitful design, treachery. கவிக்கருத்து, s. An author's meaning. 2. The meaning of a poem. கள்ளக்கருத்து, s. kiḷai (p. 112) s. Branching, ramification, branch, மரமுதலியவற்றின்கிளை. 2. A bough, a spring, a twig, a spray, a sprout, a shoot, a bud, தளிர். 3. Kindred relations, line, family branches சுற்றம். 4. A herd (of cattle). a flock, a horde, a shoal; a family, a race, a group, a class, a company, கூட்டம். 5. Bamboo, மூங்கில். 6. A mode of singing, ஓர்பண். 7. One of the musical tones modulated by the palate--the third in the gamut, கைக்கிளையென்னுமிசை. 8. One of the strings of the lute corresponding with the கைக்கிளை tone, யாழினோர்நரம்பு. கிளைகிளையாய், In herds, flocks or groups. கிளைகூட்ட, inf. To screech--as two or more ஆந்தை owls together. கிளைக்கதை, s. One story branching out of another, a ramifying narrative; an episode. கிளைவழி, s. Lineage, pedigree, உறவின் வழி. 2. A branching street, கொடிவழி. கிளைநறுக்க, inf. To prune, to lop. கிளைபுறப்பட, inf. To shoot forth--as a branch. கிளையோட--கிளைவிட inf. To put forth twigs, branches, &c. 2. To ramify, to branch out. நெடுங்கிளை, s. A straight branch. பக்கக்கிளை, s. A by-shoot. பொய்க்கிளை, s. [prov.] False sprouts for fruit in jack-trees. மெய்க்கிளை, s. [prov.] Sprouts of genuine fruits in jack-trees. கிளைஞர், s. (pl.) Relations, kindred, உற வோர். 2. Friends, companions, associates, தோழர். See under கிளை, v. a. கிளைபெருக்க, inf. To be numerous, to multiply, ramify, increase, &c.--as a family. கிளைமை, s. Relationship, உறவு. 2. Amity, friendship, சினேகம். கிளையார், s. Kindred, friends. கிளைப்பெயர், s. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)

kuẕu (p. 129) s. Class, society, band; company of the same trade, profession, &c., கூட்டம். 2. A lady's female retinue or companions; a company of females, மாதர்கூட்டம். 3. Flock, herd, swarm, shoal, ஆடுமாடுமுதலியவ ற்றின்கூட்டம். 4. (Sans. Ghusha.) Wit, ingenuity; witty expressions, fanciful or shrewd intimations, விரகு. --Note. In Jaffna, this word is sometimes used for கொழு--as in குழுக்கடா, குழுக்காலி, &c. குழுவன், s. An attendant on a fowler, குறவனின்பாங்கன், (See குளுவன்.) 2. A witty person, விரகுடையவன். குழுவிட, inf. To use witty or humorous expressions or mimicking gestures, &c. 6)

keṭṭi (p. 137) s. (Tel.) Firmness, robustness, strength, உறுதி. 2. Cleverness, expertness, ingenuity, skilfulness, சாமர்த்தியம். 3. Close-fistedness, உலோபகுணம். கெட்டி--கெட்டிதான். Well done, bravo! கெட்டிக்காரன், s. A clever, capable person; a smart, active man, &c. கெட்டிக்காப்பு, s. A braccelet not hollow but solid. கெட்டிச்சரீரம், s. A robust body. கெட்டித்தனம், s. Cleverness, dexterity, capableness. 2. (litle used.) Parsimony, close-fistedness. கெட்டிபண்ண, inf. To make firm, to harden. 2. To sublimate. 3. To strengthen medicines, liquors, &c. 4. To transact an affair, or conclude a business advantageously. கெட்டிபத்திரம், adv. Very secure, under lock and key, &c. 2. [as an order.] Be very careful, take great care. கெட்டிப்பாகு, s. Thick syrup. கெட்டியாய்ச்சோதிக்க, inf. To search or examine strictly. கெட்டியாயுச்சரிக்க, inf. To articulate distinctly, to pronounce correctly and loudly; to enunciate with proper inflection, emphasis and modulation. கெட்டியானவேலை, s. Skilful, nice work; nice workmanship. கெட்டி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To harden, strengthen; to make firm or compact--as by ramming the load of a gun, உரமாக்க. 12)

caka (p. 153) A prefix in words of Sanscrit origin signifying with, together with--as சகோ தரன், an own brother, W. p. 913. SAHA. சககமனம், s. [vul. சாகமனம்.] Sutti, the burning of a wife with her husband's corpse--as அனுமரணம், உடன்கட்டை யேறல்; [ex சக, et கமனம், going.] சகசம், s. That which is inherent, cognate, innate, இயற்கை. 2. Reality, truth, genuineness, உண்மை. W. p. 913. SAHAJA. 3. [in philos.] The natural inherency of the principle of malam, மலம், in the soul, tainting its operations, and subjecting it to transmigrations, மலசகிதம். 4. (சது.) A change of Chashaka. W. p. 321. Verdigris is inherent in copper. உலகத்தில்இதுசகசமாய்வழங்கிவருகிறது. This is in common use in the world. சகசமாய்ச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. (c.) சகசன், s. A brother, as சகோதரன். W. p. 913. SAHAJA. சகசரன், s. A companion, an associate, a mate, உடன்றிரிதோழன். W. p. 913. SAHACHARA. சகசை, s. (fem. of சகசன்.) An own sister, உடன்பிறந்தாள். சகபாடி, s. [loc.] A school mate, உடன்படிப்போன். 2. [vul.] The husband of a wife's sister, commonly சகலப்பாடி. சகவாசம், s. Familiarity, intercourse, friendship, association, consorting with, cohabitation, சங்காத்தம். சகளன், s. A cousin being the child of a paternal uncle or a maternal aunt. கூடப்பிறந்தசகோதரன், s. An own brother. சகோதரி, s. A sister, உடன்பிறந்தாள். 2. Productions in the animal or vegetable kingdom resembling others more genuine and considered counterfeit as produced by Visvamitra in opposition to Brahma--Note.
