uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. Lime of conch shells. முத்துச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of pearls-said to be luxury of kings with their betel-leaf. நத்தைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of snail shells. சிப்பிச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Lime of oyster shells. சீமைச்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Chalk. குழைசுண்ணாம்பு, s. Macerated lime for plastering. கற்சுண்ணாம்பு--சுக்கான்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Stone lime. கிளிஞ்சிற்சுண்ணாம்பு, s. Shell-lime. நீற்றினசுண்ணாம்பு, s. Slaked lime for whitewash. சுண்ணாம்புக்கீரை, s. A kind of greens. Achyranthes, L. 68)

curuḷ (p. 196) s. Roll, scroll, involution, coil, சுருட்டு. 2. A curl, ringlet, crisped leaf, tendril, &c., மயிர்ச்சுருள்முதலியன. 3. A roll of betel leaves for chewing, வெற்றிலைச்சுருள். (c.) 4. The involved folds of the young lotus, தாமரையுட்சுருள். 5. Female hair, பெண் மயிர். 6. Ladies' hair dressed or folded in a particular manner, ஐம்பாலினொன்று. சுருளில்வைத்தடக்கஞ்செய்திருக்கிறது. This is enclosed in an envelope. சுருள்கொடுக்க--சுருள்பிடிக்க, inf. To give betel to the bride and bridegroom before marriage. (c.) சுருள்பண்ண, inf. To roll up a palm leaf letter. சுருள்மடிக்க, inf. cūṭcam (p. 199) s. [prop. சூக்ஷமம்.] Skill, address, dexterity, ingenuity, inventiveness, tact, யூகம். 2. Curiously, as displayed in a piece of workmanship, நூதனம். 3. Device, contrivance, expedient, உபாயம். 4. [a contraction of சூட்சுமம்.] Minuteness, subtility, fineness, நுட்பம். 5. Comprehensiveness, conciseness, சுருக்கம். 6. Artful scheming, dishonest cunning, தந்திரம். (c.) 7. A clue to a subject; a rule in science, சூத்திரம். சூட்சத்திலேமோட்சமா. Is it easy to gain heaven? சுண்ணாம்பிலேயிருக்கிறதுசூட்சம். The principal virtue is in the chunam; (to make the mouth red in chewing betel.) சூட்சத்தில்முடித்துக்கொண்டுவாரும். Have the business done with little cost. சூட்சக்காரன், s. A skilful, ingenious person. 2. A cunning, artful person. சூட்சபுத்தி, s. Great ingenuity, superior invention, genius. சூட்சமாகப்பண்ண, inf. To act, skilfully, display ingenuity, perform extraordinary deeds, to subtilize. 2. To practise stratagems, உபாயம்பண்ண. சூட்சமானவேலை, s. Nice, ingenious, skilful workmanship. சூட்சம்பண்ண, inf. To manage economically. நீசெவலைச்சூட்சம்பண்ணவேண்டும். You must curtail your expenses. சூட்சவழி, s. A short, skilful method in art or science. 2. A good, moral system, நன்னெறி. 3. A short road, சுருக் கவழி. See சுளுவானவழி. சூட்சக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. சூட்சத்தைத்தட்ட--சூட்சந்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap to the working machine. சூட்சமறிய, inf. To get a clue to a subject, &c. சூட்சமானசெலவு, s. Economical expense. (c.) சூட்சம்போட, inf. To make a contrivance for the equilibrium of a kite in the air. சூட்சம்வைக்க, inf. To make some contrivance in mechanical adjustments, &c. சூட்சமாய்ப்பிழைக்க, inf. To be frugal in domestic expenditure. 2. To live at small expense. (c.) சூட்சமாயிருக்க, inf. To be artful or cunning. 2. To be very little, கொஞ்ச மாயிருக்க. சூட்சவிலை, s. A low price. சூட்சாதிசூட்சம், s. Great contrivance, past human conception--as in the construction of the human frame, &c., minute nicety. (c.) சூட்சானுசூட்சம், s. Concatenation of intricacies, niceties, mechanical adjustments, &c. 9)

tṭi (p. 222) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To thicken as a liquid, be inspissated, to congeal, உறைய. 2. To cohere; to form as primitive, subtile matter, into atoms, atoms into moulds or bodies; to consolidate, to assume a tangible form, திரண்டு தடிக்க. 3. To swell as the flesh from a stroke, to form a wale, வீங்க. 4. To grow large, full, plump as the breasts, &c., to become stout as a person, பூரிக்க. 5. To delay, linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. 6. To become heavier, to be aggravated or enhanced--as an accusation, அதிகரிக்க. 7. [in burlesque.] To enlarge--as in pregnancy, புடைக்க. 8. To thicken, harden, indurate as the skin by slight poison, the contact of a caterpillar, &c., கடியினாற் றடிக்க. 9. To be thick, stout, hard, stiff --as a board, &c., வைரப்பட. In this sense used only in some parts of the verb. தடிக்கக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To thicken by boiling. தடிக்கப்பூச, inf. To daub, smear or paint thickly. தடித்தஆள், s. A stout, thick person. தடித்தபால், s. Thick milk. தடித்தமை, s. Thick ink, or paint. நாக்குத்தடிக்க, inf. To grow stiff or rigid, as the tongue by chewing betel. காரியந்தடித்துப்போயிற்று. The affair has become more aggravated. 8) *

tṭippu (p. 222) v. noun. Thickness of liquids, inspissation, consolidation, கடினம். 2. Swelling from a blow, a protuberance, வீக்கம். 3. Thickness of a solid substance as a board, &c., கனம். 4. Plumpness of a person, the breast, &c., பூரிப்பு. 5. (R.) A disease spreading over the body in pustules--as எச்சிற்றழும்ப; [ex தடி, v. n.] தோள்தடிப்பாயிருக்கிறது. A callous skin covers the shoulders. தடிப்பானபுகையிலை, s. Thick tobacco leaf--the best for chewing or smoking. 11)

tmplm (p. 224) s. The red spittle when chewing betel, or the refuse of the chewed betel, பாக்குத்தம்பலம். 2. (also தம்பலப்பூச்சி.) The coccus insect with a crimson velvet like coat, appearing after showers. See இந்திரகோபம். (c.) தின்றுமிழ்ந்ததம்பலத்தின்னநினைப்பார்களா...... Will any eat again rejected refuse of betel? 2)

tṟi (p. 230) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், தறிக்க, v. a. To lop, chop off, to cut off with force, சேதிக்க. 2. To cut with a heavy blow, வெட்ட. 3. To cut down with heavy and repeated blows, வெட்டிச்சரிக்க. 4. To hew; to cut fire-wood, துண்டிக்க. 5. To clip, or chop off, கத்தரிக்க. 6. [prov.] To shake and separate by a fan, தானியம்புடைக்க. 7. (fig.) To frustrate a matter, காரியபங்கப்ப டுத்த.--Note. The meanings all imply cutting across the grain. தறியாணி, s. A small chisel for cutting iron. Compare வெட்டிரும்பு. தறிக்கை, தறிப்பு, v. noun.
