āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. To render aid--as to a sick person, to help one in distress, துன்புற்றோ ரைக்காக்க. 3. To console, ஆற்ற. ஆற்றுவிக்க, inf. [causal.] To console, cherish, afford consolation, தணி யச்செய்ய. 2. To inspire with courage, வலிதர. 3. To enable to bear, or endure, உறுதிசெய்ய. ஆற்றல், v. noun. Cooling, assuaging, consoling, &c. 2. Enduring, bearing patiently. 3. Bearing a load.

uttrvu (p. 60) s. Permission, grant, leave (of superiors), விடுதலை. 2. A government order, கட்டளை. 3. Answer, reply, விடை. 4. A divine permission suggested in dreams, or revealed by inspiration, தேவோத்தரவு. அவனுக்குக்கதிர்காமத்திற்குப்போகஉத்தரவுகிடைத் தது. He has obtained divine permission to go on a pilgrimage to Cathirgamam (a place sacred to Soobramania). உத்தரவுகேட்க, inf. To ask leave. உத்தரவுகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission. உத்தரவுசெய்ய, inf. To grant permission, privileges, &c. உத்தரவுசொல்ல, inf. To give leave. உத்தரவுச்சீட்டு, s. A passport, permit, விடுதலைப்பத்திரிகை. 2. A certificate of right, permission, privilege, authority, அதிகாரப்பத்திரிகை. உத்தரி, s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) உத்தரி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To make satisfaction, indemnify, compensate, atone for, expiate, ஈடுசெய்ய. 2. To bear, sustain, experience, to endure what is deserved, சகிக்க. 3. To pay debts, liquidate, to give satisfaction, கடன்செலுத்த. 4. To reply to, answer, state arguments on one's behalf, நியாயங்காட்ட. 5. To guarantee, உத்தரவாதஞ்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To suffer by disease, poverty, age, &c., அழுந்த. வியாதியிலேகிடந்துத்தரிக்க, To lie suffering in disease. சமுசாரப்பொறுப்பையுத்தரிக்க. To sustain the burden of a family. நாலுபேர்சமுகத்திலேயுத்தரித்தாலல்லோதெரியும்.... The merit of the parties will appear by a public discussion. அவனிடத்திலிருந்தென்னாலுத்தரிக்கக்கூடாது. I could not (of cannot) endure to live with him. இந்தப்பாதகமெப்போதுதானுத்தரித்துத்தீரும். O! when will the effects of this enormity be done away by suffering. உத்தரிக்கப்படாதது, appel. n. That which is intolerable, insufferable. 2. That which cannot be expiated. உத்தரிக்கிறஸ்தலம், s. The Romish purgatory, a place of atonement or retribution. நியாயமுத்தரிக்க, inf. To state arguments, to argue. 2. To reply in argument. உத்தரிப்பு, v. noun. Sufferings, afflictions--as retribution for sins of former births, சகிப்பு.--Note. All the meanings of the verb are equally applicable, but this is the most common. 34) *

ūẕl (p. 70) s. That which is decayed, spoiled, bad in quality, conduct, கெட்டது. 2. That which is filthy, nasty--as excrement, putrefaction, &c., mud, mire, ஊத் தை. 3. (p.) Hell, நரகம். ஊழலத்தி, s. A medicinal tree. ஊழல்நாற்றம், s. An intolerable smell. ஊழல்நிலம், s. Barren land. 2. Stinking, muddy land. ஊழல்மனிதன், s. A man bad in disposition, conduct, &c. ஊழற்குடிவாழ்க்கை, s. Slovenly economy, dirty, disorderly management of a family.

kiṭṭi (p. 109) s. An instrument of torture for the hand, consisting of two sticks forming a kind of vise, and used in trials by ordeal; also a similar instrument for castrating bullocks, and pressing out medicinal oils, இறுக்குகோல். 2. Sticks that confine the bullock's head to the beam in drawing, நுகக்கிட்டி. 3. The larger of a pair of sticks used by boys in play; a round bat, சிறுவர் விளையாட்டுக்கருவியிலொன்று. 4. A cymbal, கைத் தாளம். 5. An hour-basin, நாழிகைவட்டில். 6. A plant, சின்னி, Isoetes, L. கிட்டிகட்ட, inf. To torture with the கிட்டி. கிட்டிகட்டிக்கேட்க, inf. To examine by torture with the கிட்டி. 2. To press intolerably--as a debtor. கிட்டிக்கலப்பை, s. A small kind of plough; commonly a plough worn out by use and age, சிறுகலப்பை. கிட்டிக்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the plant கிட்டி, சின்னிக்கிழங்கு. கிட்டிக்கோல்--கிட்டிப்பந்து--கிட்டித் தடி, s. The கிட்டி--as in the first two meanings. கிட்டிபுள்ளு--கிட்டியும்புள்ளும், s. The two sticks used in boy's play. கிட்டிப்பூட்ட, inf. To torture with கிட்டி. 2. To fix the yoke on the bullock's neck. கிட்டிபோட்டிறுக்க, inf. To use the கிட்டி torture. 2. To press with the கிட்டி instrument. கிட்டியடிக்க, inf. To play with கிட்டி புள்ளு sticks, the புள்ளு being struck by the கிட்டி. 28) *

To tolerate, excuse, pardon, மன்னிக்க. (c.) உன்குணத்தைச்சகிக்கக்கூடாது. Thy temper cannot be endured, or borne with. சகிக்கக்கூடாததுன்பம், s. Intolerable suffering. சகிக்கப்படாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Insufferableness, intolerableness. துன்பத்தைச்சகிக்க, inf. To bear affliction with patience. சகிப்பு, v. noun. Bearing, sustaining, enduring, தாங்குகை. 2. Forbearing punishment, pardoning, மன்னிப்பு. சகிப்புக்காரன்--சகிப்பாளி, s. A forgiver, one who forbears with patience. சகியாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Not enduring, not forbearing, &c. 5) *

tri (p. 225) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To stop, to stand still, to stay, to rest, நிற்க. 2. To pause in speaking, reading, singing, &c., நிறுத்த. 3. To take root, வேர்தரிக்க. 4. v. a. To bear, to take in one, சுமக்க. 5. To invest, put on any thing, as dress, flowers, accoutrements, &c., அணிய. 6. To support bear patiently, endure, சகிக்க. (Compare உத்தரி.) 7. Bearing, enduring; toleration, பொறுத் திருக்கை. 4. Having, holding possession, கொண்டிருக்கை. 5. Dwelling permanently in a place, குடியாயிருக்கை. 6. (loc.) Treasure, stoke, or cash, in hand, கையிருப்பு. 7. Pause in reading, speaking, &c., நிறுத்து கை. 8. A lodging, resting place, இருப்பி டம். 9. (in Madras, தருப்பு.) A small flat, diamond-like stone, வைரத்தரிப்பு. அவனுக்கங்கேதரிப்பில்லை. He will not get a footing. கையிலேதரிப்புண்டா. Have you money in hand? தரிப்புத்தட்டான், s. A monied man. (R.) 30) *
