ayaṉ (p. 22) s. Brahma, பிரமன். 2. The son of Raghu, and father of Dasharatha, தசரதன்றந்தை. Wils. p. 12. AJA. 3. Argha, god of the Samanar, அருகன். (p.) அயனாள், s. The fourth lunar mansion, உரோகணிநாள். 2. The age of Brahma, பிரமன்வாழ்நாள். அயனூருவிலுதித்தோர், s. Those who proceeded from the thigh of Brahma, the agricultural and mercantile tribes, வைசியர். அயன்பதத்திலுதித்தோர், s. Those who sprang from the feet of Brahma-Sudras, the sevile tribe, சூத்திரர். அயன்மனைவி, s. Saraswati, the wife of Brahma, சரச்சுவதி. அயன்முகத்துதித்தோர், s. Those who came from the face of Brahma-Brahmans, பிராமணர். அயன்றோளுதித்தோர், s. Those who came from Brahma's shoulders-the military tribe, க்ஷத்திரியர். 14)

āḷi (p. 43) s. The lion as the king of beasts, சிங்கம். 2. A governor, a master, ஆள்வோன். 3. Leo the zodiacal sign, சிங்க விராசி. 4. A fabulous animal (the யாளி.) like a lion, but with a proboscis as an elephant. 5. A kind of seed, ஆளிவிதை. 6. An embankment, or boundary for keeping up water, செய்கரை. 7. Bank in general, கரைப்பொது. 8. [vul.] An oyster, மட்டி. 9. An appellative affix, mas. or fem. joined to nouns--implying a ruler, owner, manager, master, one who owns a thing, possesses a quality, &c.,--as from பகை is formed, பகையாளி. ஆளியூர்தி, s. Kali and Durga, so called because conveyed on an animal of the lion kind. 57)

āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)

iykku (p. 47) கிறேன், இயக்கினேன், வே ன், இயக்க, v. a. [causative of இயங்கு.] To cause to go, move or pass, செலுத்த. 2. To train, reduce to order, break in (a horse, ox, &c.) to exercise, practise, பழக்க. 3. To direct, influence, manage, perform, command, நடத்த. 4. To operate in sentient beings--as the Deity, who, being the life of their life, influences their movements and is himself the agent in every action they perform, இயங்குவிக்க. காளையையியக்க, inf. To train a steer to the plough. 30)

iyamāṉaṉ (p. 48) s. The conductor of a sacrifice, one who institutes it and directs its performance, யாகஞ்செய்விப்போன். Wils. p. 678. YAJAMANA. 2. A master, manager, chief, lord, யசமானன். 3. iyṟṟu (p. 48) கிறேன், இயற்றினேன், வே ன், இயற்ற, v. n. To do , make, effect, perform, execute, bring about, cause to take place, discharge a duty or obligation, exercise or use an art, செய்ய. 2. To transact, manage affairs, superintend, cause or excite one to do a thing, நடத்த. 3. To destine, appoint, assign, விதிக்க. (p.) இயற்றலுமீட்டலுங்காத்தலும். Devising means to increase the finances, collecting and keeping them. எல்லாத்தவமுமியற்றி. Performing every species of austerity. ஐந்துவேள்ளியுமியற்றி. Offering the five daily oblations. இறந்தவர்கள்காமுறுமிருங்கடனியற்றி. Duly discharging the debt demanded by departed spirits. இயற்றுதற்கருத்தா--இயற்றும்வினை முதல், s. [in grammar.] The agent, the actor in distinction from ஏவுதற்கருத்தா, commander-as செய்வதன், distinguished from செய்வித்தவன். இயற்றும்வினை, s. [in grammar.] Verbs expressing action, performed by one's self--as செய்தான், in distinction from ஏவும்வினை. 23)

ukkirāṇm (p. 59) s. (Tel.) A storehouse, a granary, பண்டகசாலை. (c.) உக்கிராணக்காரன், s. A steward. உக்கிராணவிசாரணை, s. The management of provisions, stewardship. 23) *

uti (p. 60) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To rise--as the sun, moon, &c., உதயமாக. 2. To be born--as a good or great personage, to be born, (spoken auspiciously, sometimes of common persons) பிறக்க. 3. To become incarnate--as a deity, to assume a form, அவதரிக்க. 4. To spring, arise, come into existence, grow out of, (தீ. 55.) to originate, become formed or developed, to have origin--as a book, science, &c., to arise--as primitive elements one out of another; to become evolved--as the world, &c., தோன்ற. 5. To commence--as a new period of time whether age, year, a month or otherwise, காலந்தொடங்க. 6. To swell, increase in size, பருக்க. நானுடனேயங்கேவந்துதிப்பேன். I will be in your company immediately. உலகமுதித்துதித்தொடுங்கும். The worlds appear and disappear again and again, (emanating from and being resolved into their primitive elements). கிணற்றிலேதண்ணீருதித்தது. The water has sprung up in the (new) well--an auspicious word. மனதிலுதித்தநினைவு. The thoughts that arose in the mind. 14) *

uy (p. 63) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To put in motion, cause to go, discharge, let go, let fly, send, emit, cast, throw, செலுத்த. 2. To ride, drive a carriage, &c., வாகனமூர. 3. To effect, accomplish, bring about, collect, gather together, காரியத்தைமுடிக்க. 4. To carry on, conduct literally, or morally, lead an army, &c., to manage, guide, direct, influence, operate, நடத்த. 5. To place, put in, shoot in, throw or cast in, plunge into, அமிழ்த்த. 6. To cause to arrive at, சேர்க்க. 7. To place, வைக்க. 8. To enjoy, experience, அனுபவிக்க. (p.) (குறள்.) உய்த்துச்சொரியினும்போகாதம. That which is apportioned by fate, though rejected, will not leave. (p.) (குறள்.) காதலகாதலறியாமையுய்க்கிற்பின். If (a king) enjoy the objects of his desire, (his foes) being unacquainted with those desires-(குறள்.) உய்த்துணர, inf. To discern, to distinguish, exercise thought, &c., ஆ ராய்ந்தறிய. உய்த்துணரவைப்பு, s. The use of such terms, descriptions, or definitions in a written work, as may require the exercise of thought, reference to other parts, &c., in order to comprehend them, ஆராய்ந்தறியவைக்கை--one of the thirty-two உத்தி in நன்னூல். உய்த்தலில்பொருண்மை, s. Poetry composed in such terms only as are necessary to express the author's meaning, கருதியபொருள்தோன்றப்பாடப்படுவது. உய்ப்பு, v. noun. Discharging, emission, accomplishment, &c., including all the meanings of the verb, உய்க் கை. 25)

urakam (p. 63) --உரங்கம்--உரங்கமம், s. A snake, serpent, பாம்பு. Wils. p. 162. URAGA and URANGA, also URANGAMA. (p.) உரகபந்தம்--உரகபந்தனம், s. One of the curious kinds of poems called மிறைக்கவி. See நாகபந்தம். உரகமல்லி, s. The நாகமல்லி plant, Justicia nasuta, L. உரகர், s. [as நாகர்.] Snakes, serpents. 2. Samanar, or Jainas, a sect of Hindus, சமணர். (p.) உரகன், s. The chief of the நாகர் serpents said to have a thousand heads and to be the couch of Vishnu; the earth is represented as supported on one of its heads, ஆதிசேஷன். (p.) உரகாரி, s. Garuda, கருடன். Wils. p. 162. URAGARE. உரகாதிபன்--உரகேந்திரன், s. The chief of the serpents, அதிசேஷன். 29)

ūẕl (p. 70) s. That which is decayed, spoiled, bad in quality, conduct, கெட்டது. 2. That which is filthy, nasty--as excrement, putrefaction, &c., mud, mire, ஊத் தை. 3. (p.) Hell, நரகம். ஊழலத்தி, s. A medicinal tree. ஊழல்நாற்றம், s. An intolerable smell. ஊழல்நிலம், s. Barren land. 2. Stinking, muddy land. ஊழல்மனிதன், s. A man bad in disposition, conduct, &c. ஊழற்குடிவாழ்க்கை, s. Slovenly economy, dirty, disorderly management of a family.
