A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

[in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. An imitative, reiterated sound--as மடமடெனக்குடிக்கி றான், he drinks with a gurgling sound. 20) *

eṉ (p. 75) . Why, wherefore, pronominal interrogative particle, from எ, what, வினாவி னைக்குறிப்பு. 2. A particle or interjection of doubt, ஐயக்கிளவி. 3. Particle of contempt, இகழ்ச்சிக்குறிப்பு. It is the crude form of a symbolic verb of double declension expressing what kind, what manner of person, thing, &c. பிறவினியுரைப்பதென்னே. What more then is there to be said? இவன்றந்தையென்னோற்றான்கொல்லென்னுஞ்சொல். What meritorious deed did the father perform to get such a son? அவையென். What are they? 39)

kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. To keep one's self, to act so as to avoid blame, scandal, &c. காத்தல், v. noun. Defending, guarding, &c. காப்பு, v. noun. Preservation, defence, guard, protection, cherishing, பாது காப்பு. 2. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11. kāci (p. 103) s. Casi, a celebrated city and place of pilgrimage, the modern Banares, being the most meritorious place for bathing in sacred water, as Ramisseram is for the south of India, ஓர்நகரம். Wils. p. 219. KASHI. 2. The cumin seed, சீரகம். காசிகாண்டம், s. One of the sixteen books of கந்தப்புராணம். காசிக்கங்கை, s. The Ganges at Banares, being more sacred than in other places. காசிக்கல், s. A loadstone, காகச்சிலை. காசிச்சாரம், s. A mineral salt, ஓ ருப்பு. காசித்தீர்த்தம், s. The water of the Ganges, obtained at Benares and carried about the country by religious mendicants. காசித்தும்பை, s. A kind of தும் பை plant. காசிலவணம், s. A kind of salt, ஓருப்பு. காசிலிங்கம், s. The linga worshipped at Benares. காசிவாசி, s. A dweller or inhabitant of the city of Banares. 49)

kāmiyam (p. 104) s. A thing desired, an object of desire, that which is done for some particular object--as religious ceremonies, &c.--opposed to நிட்காமியம். Wils. p. 212. KAMYA. 2. One of the three evil passions, the principle of lust, &c. See கான்மிகம். காமியகன்மம், s. Works done to obtain some benefit, பயனைவிரும்பிச் செய்யுங் கிரியை. காமியக்கல், s. One of the nine precious stones, கோமேதகம். காமியமரணம், s. A voluntary death; suicide by plunging into the Ganges, &c., forbidden to the Brahman, but meritorious in the other castes. 74) *

kāy (p. 104) s. Unripe fruits, fruits, that do not grow mellow by ripening--as grains, nuts, &c., கனிக்காய். 2. (c.) A callous tumour, an excrescence, a wart, a corn, a cicatrice from a wound, காய்ப்பு. 3. An unripe boil, &c., காய்ப்பரு. 4. A piece at chess, a die, சொக்கட்டான்காய். கட்டியின்னங்காயாயிருக்கிறது. The tumour is not yet ripe. காயவியல், s. A curry carelessly prepared with unripe fruits. காய்கறி, s. Fruits, vegetables and the like for preparing curry. காய்காய்க்க, inf. To form as a fruit; to produce fruit, to bear fruit. காய்காய்க்கிறமரம், s. A tree that bears fruit, not a barren tree. காய்க்கடுக்கன், s. [prov.] An ear-ring with a sacred seed fastened in it, for a bead, from which, if water fall on the body, in bathing, &c., it is deemed very meritorious, உருத்திராட்டக்கடுக்கன். காய்க்குலை, s. A bunch of unripe fruits. காய்ச்சீர், s. [in prosody.] Any of the four metrical feet ending in காய்காய்; also, a metrical foot equivalent in measure to a foot in காய். See சீர். காய்த்தானியம், s. The nine kinds of grains, called முதிரை, நவதானியம். 2. A shrub, கம்பளிகொண்டான், Morus Indica. காய்பறிக்க, inf. To pluck unripe fruits. காய்மடி, s. The thick, hard udder of a cow unfit for milk. காய்மடை, s. [prov.] An offering of fruits, commonly to a ferocious deity, கனிவர்க்கநிவேதனம். காய்ம்பனை, s. [prov.] A fruit-bearing palmyra tree, as distinguished from young trees and males, காய்க்கும்பனை. காய்வள்ளி, s. See வள்ளி. காய்வெட்டிக்கள், s. [prov]. Toddy from a Palmyra tree, the young fruits of which are cut off that the juice may flow from the stalk, காயைவெட்டி இறக்குங்கள். கருக்காய், s. Grain almost ripe. கருங்காய், s. Dark betel-nuts, not yet turned red. செங்காய், s. Fruits or grain turning yellow when ripening. பசுங்காய்--இளங்காய், s. Fruits just formed, tender grain. 2. immature fruit or grain. 90)

kārttikai (p. 104) s. The eighth Hindu month, being part of November and December, ஓர்மாதம்.--Note. The Saivas consider it more sacred than other months, and may abstain from animal food during the month, who at other times use it; and keep it as a season of fast in honor of the canonized pleiades, and their foster son Skanda. Wils. p. 214. KARTTIKA. 2. The third lunar asterism; the pleiades, regarded as six stars, கிருத்்திகைநட்சத்திரம். 3. The third nacshatra. 4. Durga, துர்க்கை. கார்த்திகேயன், s. A name of the god Skanda (கந்தன்), as nursed by the pleiades in the form of nymphs; he assuming the forms of six infants, the bodies being afterwards united into one. Wils. p. 214. KARTIKEYA.. கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the கார்த்திகை plant which is poisonous. It is sometimes eaten by mistake for the அல்லிக்கிழங்கு. கார்த்திகைக்கொடி, s. The Novemberflower plant, தோன்றி. கார்த்திகைக்கொள்ளி, s. [prov.] A brand waved by children in play on the evening of திருக்கார்த்திகை festival. கார்த்திகைசோமவாரம், s. The Mondays in கார்த்திகை regarded as fastdays, on which religious duties are more meritorious than in other months. கார்த்திகைதேவிமார், s. Pleiades, the goddesses. கார்த்திகைப்பூ, s. The November-flower, காந்தள்மலர். கார்த்திகைவிரதம், s. The November fast, kept in honor of Skanda, கிருத்திகைஉப வாசம். கார்த்திகைவிளக்கு, s. The November lamp-lighting on the evening of the திரு க்கார்த்திகை, when lights are placed at the door and other parts of the house, in the cow-stall, at the well, in the growing corn. &c.; commonly called விளக்கிடல் or விளக்கீடு. திருக்கார்த்திகை. The day in கார்த்திகை in which the moon enters the third nacshatra, considered a very sacred day. 145)

The sacred time of an eclipse, when fasting, ablutions and other religious rites are deemed more meritorious than at other times. கிரகணமோசனம்--கிரகணமோட்சம், s. The end of an eclipse. கிரகணமோசனமாகுதல்--கிரகணம்விடு தல் v. noun. Ending of an eclipse. பக்கக்கிரகணம், s. Eclipses of the sun and moon, or moon and sun in succeeding changes of the moon. காணாக்கிரகணம்--பாதாளகிரகணம், s. An invisible eclipse. சந்திரகிரகணம், s. An eclipse of the moon; a lunar eclipse. சூரியகிரகணம், s. An eclipse of the sun; a solar eclipse. பாரிசகிரகணம், s. A partial eclipse. முழுக்கிரகணம், s. A total eclipse. வலயக்கிரகணம்--கங்கணகிரகணம், s. caṟ (p. 173) adj. [A sanscrit prefix.] Good, right, excellent, virtuous, &c., நல்ல, உச்சித. W. p. 884. SAT. சற்கருமம்--சற்கன்மம், s. Good deeds, charitable or meritorious acts. See கரு மம். சற்கன்மபரிபாகம், s. The maturing of works of merit performed in previous births, supposed to promote the illumination of the soul, and to lead to the use of means for its deliverance from transmigrations. (p.) சற்கரிக்க, inf. To treat hospitably, to entertain, உபசரிக்க. 2. To be kind, polite, civil, obliging; [ex சற்காரம்.] சற்காரம், s. Kindness, beneficence, hospitality, civility, உபசாரம். W. p. 884. SATKARA. (p.) சற்காரியம், s. Good things, virtuous deeds, pursuits, &c., meritorious actions. சற்காரியவித்தை, s. The four incidents connected with births as necessary for the performance of actions, namely. 1. தனு, body for the performance of actions. 2. கரணம், intellectual faculties, the senses, &c. 3. புவனம், word, locality--as the theatre of actions. 4. போகம், suffering and enjoyment. (p.) சற்குணம், s. An obliging disposition, amiableness, good nature, benevolence, religion. (c.) சற்குணன், appel. n. An amiable, virtuous, obliging person. சற்குரு, s. A guru who seeks the good of his disciples, நற்குரு. 2. The deity--as the teacher of souls, according to their various states. (c.) சற்சங்கம், s. Good society. (p.) சர்சனர், s. [prop. சச்சனர்.] Good or pious men. (c.) சற்சலம், s. Good, pure water, நல்ல சலம். (p.) (சது.) சற்சூத்திரர், s. Superior sudras who have advanced to the கிரியை, or second degree in the Saiva religion; also called சைவர். (p.) சற்பாத்திரம், s. A good vessel, i.e. a worthy, pious, virtuous man, ஒழுக்க முடையோன். W. p. 885. SATPATRA. சற்பிரசாதம், s. A divine gift, a boon, தேவப்பிரசாதம். 2. A sacred offering, நிவே தனம். 3. [in Christ. usage.] Sacrament of the Lord's supper, நற்கருணை. See பிரசா தம். (c.) சற்புத்தி, s. Virtuous propensity, good disposition, நல்லறிவு. சற்புத்திரன், s. A dutiful son, நற்புதல் வன். (c.) 2. (fig.) A disciple dutiful to his Guru, சீஷன். 3. cirāttam (p. 185) --சிரார்த்தம், s. Any annual funeral rite performed under the direction of the Purohita or household brahman, for a deceased parent, or other ancestor; when balls of rice are set for the manes and a variety of presents are made to the officiating Brahmans, திவ சம். W. p. 862. S'RADDHA. சிராத்தங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give presents as part of the Sraddha rite. சிராத்தபுண்ணியகாலம், s. The sacred time of the Sraddha, when to bestow gifts is very meritorious. சிராத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the Sraddha rite, as the chief descendant of a family, or as the officiating brahman. அன்னச்சிராத்தம், s. The Sraddha as practised by brahmans--when cooked rice is distributed. ஆமச்சிராத்தம், s. Undressed food presented to brahmans in this rite. See under ஆமம். உங்களப்பன்சிராத்தமாமுழுகிப்போகும். A person of good disposition, நற்குணன். சுதினம், s. An auspicious day, நல்லநாள். சுவிசேஷம், s. [Christ. usage.] A good message--the Gospel. 3)

cukirtam (p. 192) s. [improp. சுகுர்தம்.] W. p. 927. SUKRUTA. Virtue, morality, goodness, moral merit, meritorious deeds, நல் லறம். 2. Goodness, நன்மை. 3. The practice of religious austerities, தவஞ்செய்கை. 4. Reward, recompense, especially an inferior heaven--as the reward of virtue, புண்ணியபலன். 5. Deliciousness, delightsomeness, இன்பம். 6.
