aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. A collection or series of eight things, எட்டின்கூட்டம். 2. A Sanscrit poem, every eight stanzas of which are of the same kind of verse, வடமொழியினோர்பிரபந்தம். Wils. p. 91. ASHTAKA. அஷ்டகருமம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. ati (p. 10) . A particle used as a prefix to words from Sanscrit to increase their meaning, மிகுதிப்பொருளைக்காட்டுமடைசொல். Wils. p. 15. ATI. அதிகதை, s. A speech or expression which has no sense, a nonsensical speech, வெற்றுரை. அதிகாசம், s. Violent or loud laughter, horse laugh, பெருநகை. Wils. p. 18. ATIHASA. அதிகாலம்--அதிகாலை, s. attiyantam (p. 13) s. Much, excessiveness boundlessness, unchangeableness, அ நந்தம். Wils. p. 18. ATYANTA. 2. A number, ten thousand quintillions, ஓரெண்; ex அதி, beyond, et அந்தம், boundary. (p.) அத்தியந்தபணிவு, s. Profound humility. அத்தியந்தபிரியமானபிராணன். The inestimably precious life. (பஞ்.) அத்தியந்தாபாவம், s. [in logic.] Absolute negation or non-existence, முழு துமின்மை. 13) *

aṉupamam (p. 33) s. [priv. அந், et உப மம்.] Incomparableness, being without similitude as an attribute of the deity, the state of having no parallel, ஒப்பின்மை. Wils. p. 33. ANUPAMA. (p.) 115) *
அனைய
aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். அபிமானம்
apimāṉam (p. 17) s. High esteem, special estimation, நன்மானம். 2. Care, love, affection, நேசம். 3. Regard, respect, honor, (to others) கனம். 4. The sense or feeling of honor which leads one to abstain from mean or unworthy actions, magnanimity, greatness of mind, intrinsic dignity, nobility of soul, உயர்குணம். 5. Glorying in, களிப்பு. (உப. 294, 15.) Wils. p. 54. AB'HIMANA. அபிமானக்குறைச்சல்பண்ணல், v. noun. Dishonoring, disgracing a person. அபிமானபுத்திரன், s. A son adopted after the proper age, or otherwise disqualified. அபிமானமுள்ள சிநேகிதன், s. A familiar friend, one dearly beloved. அபிமானி, s. A very honorable person, கவனான். உப. 59.) அபிமானிக்க, inf. To honor, esteem highly, மெச்ச. 2. To regard, love, respect, கனம்பண்ண. 3. To prize, value, appreciate, take great care of, glory in, boast of, மதிக்க. உப. 124. சத. 55.) 16) *
அயன்
ayaṉ (p. 22) s. Brahma, பிரமன். 2. The son of Raghu, and father of Dasharatha, தசரதன்றந்தை. Wils. p. 12. AJA. 3. Argha, god of the Samanar, அருகன். (p.) அயனாள், s. The fourth lunar mansion, உரோகணிநாள். 2. The age of Brahma, பிரமன்வாழ்நாள். அயனூருவிலுதித்தோர், s. Those who proceeded from the thigh of Brahma, the agricultural and mercantile tribes, வைசியர். அயன்பதத்திலுதித்தோர், s. Those who sprang from the feet of Brahma-Sudras, the sevile tribe, சூத்திரர். அயன்மனைவி, s. Saraswati, the wife of Brahma, சரச்சுவதி. அயன்முகத்துதித்தோர், s. Those who came from the face of Brahma-Brahmans, பிராமணர். அயன்றோளுதித்தோர், s. Those who came from Brahma's shoulders-the military tribe, க்ஷத்திரியர். 14)
அருமை
arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)
அறி
aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

aṟṟu (p. 33) . A symbolic verb or a particle of similitude, as, so, like, &c., அத்தன்மைத் து. 2. An expletive சாரியை, chiefly employed in declining neuter plurals in அ, as அவற்றால், by them. (p.) பாலொடுதேன்கலந்தற்றே. Like honey mixed with milk. பலவற்றுக்கோடு, s. The branches of many (trees) or the horns of many (beasts.) 74)

aẕuntu (p. 33) கிறேன், அழுந்தினேன், வேன், அழுந்த, v. n. To become pressed, be impressed, pressed close or hard, அமுங்க. 2. To become firm, close, fast, compact, to be pressed together, உறுதியாயிருக்க. 3. To be immersed, to sink, be overwhelmed, ingulphed, plunged, (in sorrow, joy, disease,) அமிழ. 4. To be enchased, inlaid, imprinted, பதிய. (c.) நரகத்திலேயழுந்துவான். He will suffer long and greatly in hell. இன்பசாகரத்திலேயழுந்தினார்கள். They were immersed in an ocean of joy. நன்றாகவழுந்தவெழுது. Write so as to indent well, (on the ola.) காலின்கீழழுந்த. To be trodden under foot, pressed into the earth. அழுந்தக்கட்ட, inf. To tie fast. அழுந்தல்--அழுந்துதல், v. noun. āngku (p. 36) . There, in that place, அவ் விடம். 2. A particle of comparison or similitude, expressing as, so, like, thus, &c., உவமையுருபிடைச்சொல்; as பறந்தாங்குவாம்பரி. A horse running as swiftly is if flying. 3. A poetic expletive, அசைநிலை; as விருந்தொக்க றானென்றாங்கு. The guests, kindred, and self. (p.) 26)

ācāriyaṉ (p. 36) s. A spiritual teacher and guide, the Guru who initiates the disciples into the mysteries of his religion, குரு. 2. A master or teacher of science or general literature, a preceptor, doctor, professor, உபாத்தியாயன். 3. A name of Drona the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Gurus, துரோணாசாரியன். Wils. p. 16. ACHARYA. ஆசாரியபட்டம், s. The authority or title of a priest give him at his ordination. ஆசாரியபிஷேகம்--ஆசாரியாபிடே கம்--ஆசாரியாபிஷேகம், s. The anointing or ordination of a Guru or Priest. ஆசாரியபுருஷன், s. As ஆசாரியன். 51) *
