In most of its meanings, bad or injurious qualities are implied. It differs from கடு மை, in Several meanings. Like that and similar abstract nouns, it drops the termination and combines with other nouns as an adjective, according to rule. வறுமைகொடிது. Poverty is cruel. வயிற்றுக்கொடுமையினால்வருந்துகிறான். He is vexed by want of food. கொடிது--கொடியது, appel. noun. That which is cruel, கொடுமையானது. கொடியகாடு, s. A wild, inhospitable desert. கொடியகூற்றன், s. The cruel Yama. கொடியசண்டாளர், s. Desperate wretches. கொடியபிறவி, s. Vile births--as evils to which souls are subject; horrid transmigration--as keeping the soul from union with the deity. கொடியமனம், s. Making a wry face through discontent, dissatisfaction, umbrage, sorrow, &c. சொற்கோட்டமில்லதுசெப்பமொருதலையாவுட்கோ ட்டமின்மைபெறின். Freedom from obliquity of speech is rectitude, if there be a (corresponding) freedom from bias of mind. (குற.) முகக்கோட்டம், v. noun. A sad, dejected countenance. 2. kōṇu (p. 150) கிறது, கோணினது, ம், கோண, v. n. (Sa. Kon'a, crooked.) To be crooked, bent, curved, angular, serpentine, வளைய. 2. To be or become awry, oblique, aslant, askant, கோணலாயிருக்க. (c.) 3. To deviate, diverge, or turn out of the proper course, நெறிபிறழ. 4. To be warped or discouraged in mind; to be changed--as circumstances, மாறுபட. முதற்கோணினால் முற்றுங்கோணும். If the beginning goes wrong, all will be wrong. This is superstitiously believed. கோணிக்கோணிகொடுப்பதிலுங் கோணாமற்காணி கொடுப்பதுஉத்தமம். It is better to give a little (காணி) with a good will than much (கோணி) with reluctance. கோணக்கோணஇழுக்க, inf. To distort the limbs, features, &c., as cramps, convulsion, &c. கோணிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give unwillingly. (c.) முகத்தைக்கோணவைக்க, inf. To avert the countenance. 2. To make a wry face. முகங்கோண, inf. To look sour, harsh. கோணல், v. noun. To fail or come short in a comparison, தளர. 13. To happen, succeed, நடந்தேற. (c.) பொழுதுசாயவா. Come in the afternoon. இது மேற்கே சாய்கிறது. This inclines westward. சாய்ந்துகிட. Lie down. (in contempt.) இதின்மேலேசாயாதே. Don't lean upon it. உன்பிரயாணம்எப்பொழுதுசாயும். When will you set out on your journey? என்காரியஞ்சாயுமா. Shall I succeed in my undertaking? தண்டுஅப்படிச்சாய்ந்துபோயிற்று. The army marched that way. பழத்துக்குச்சாய்ந்துவிட்டது. The fruit has begun to ripen. [prov.] கதிர்சாய--கொம்புசாய, inf. To bend the head, as ripe grain. விளைந்துசாய, inf. To incline toward the ground, as ripening grain. (c.) காரியத்தைச்சாயவிடுதல், v. noun. Leting a matter take its own course, often to the person's loss or injury. கப்பல்சாய்ந்தோடுதல், v. noun. The sailing of a leaning ship. சாயப்பிடிக்க, inf.
