īṉu (p. 58) --ஈன், கிறது, ஈன்றது, ஈனும், ஈன, v. a. To bear, bring forth. (usually limited to brutes) to cause birth or production, to beget, originate, பெற. 2. To yield, produce, put forth as fruits, &c., காய்க்க. அருளென்னுமன்பீன்குழவி. Kindness which is the offspring of love. (குறள்.) வானமேயீன்றது பூமியேதாங்கிற்று. The heavens produced, and the earth supported--spoken of one in a state of destitution. விரிதிரைப்பரவையீன்றவிளங்கிழை. The ornamented Lukshmi whom the wide billowy sea produced. (நைட.) 42)

eccm (p. 73) s. Deficiency, defect, lack, குறைபாடு. 2. Remainder, remnant, சேஷம். 3. Orts, remains of food, whatever has come in contact with the mouth. spittle, &c., being deemed defiled, எச்சில். 4. Posterity, offspring, சந்ததி. 5. The dung of birds, fowls, wall-lizards, &c., பறவைமுதலி யவற்றின்மலம். 6. An elliptical, or unfinished word, sentence, பெயரெச்சமுதலியன; [ex எஞ்சு.] (p.) எச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். (Their deeds) will be manifest in their posterity; i. e. in the prosperity, or adversity of their offspring. எச்சமிட, inf. To discharge excrement--as birds, &c., பறவைமலம்விசர்ச் சிக்க. பகையெச்சம். s. Suppressed anger. தீயெச்சம், s. The remainder of fire--as, வினைபகையென்றிரண்டினெச்சம், நினை யுங்காற்றீயெச்சம்போலத்தெறும், (Warlike) deeds which are not pushed to extremity (in the destruction of a foe) and hatred which is not executed but suppressed, will destroy like fire unextinguished. (குறள்.) நோயெச்சம், s. A reduced disease, the remains of a disease. ஈரெச்சம், s. In Grammar, the two classes of unfinished words. I. பெயரெச் சம் or participles, lit. words which require nouns to complete them. These embrace two classes, viz.: (1.) தெரிநிலை ப்பெயரெச்சம், or the participle of the common verb--as, வந்தமகன், the man who came; வருகின்றமகன், the man who comes; வரும்பிள்ளை, the child that will come. (2.) குறிப்புப்பெயரெச்சம் or பெயரெச்சக்குறிப்பு, the participle of the symbolic verb, which always ends in அ and often has the force of an adjective--as கரியகுதிரை, a black horse; கடுங்கண்ணகுதிரை, a fierceeyed horse, or a fierce horse; பொன்னகு திரை. a gold-like horse; அமர்முகத்தகுதிரை, a horse in the front of a battle; மூவிலைய வேல், a three-forked dart, a trident. II. வினையெச்சம், unfinished verbs, or such forms of the verb as require other terminate verbs, &c., to complete the sense. (1.) தெரிநிலைவினையெச்சம். In the past, it is called by Beschi, a gerund; there are five varieties; i. e. (1.) செய்து, பண்ணி, நிறீஇ for நிறுவி or நிறுத்தி; வளைஇ for வளைந்து or வளைத்து; இரீஇ for இருந்து or இருத்தி; கூய் for கூவி. (2.) செய்பு. (3.) செய்யா. (4.) செய்யூ. (5.) செய்தென--Notes. The first is the most common, and the only kind found in colloquial use. 2. The present, or infinitive, செய or செய்ய. 3. The future comprising six varieties. 1. செயின், செய்யின், செயில், செய்யில், செய்கில், these are all future subjunctive forms. 2. செய்யிய. 3. செய்யியர். 4. செய்வான். 5. செய்பாக்கு. 6. உண்பான், this termination occurs after a nasal only. The last five are equivalent to the infinitive, &c., they may be rendered by that with the potential of the verb, as given in நன்னூல். A few may be added: 1. செய் தால், the common subjunctive of the past, but often used for the future. 2. செய்தக்கால். 3. செய்தக்கடை, past or future subjunctives. 4. செய்தலும், காண்டலும். 5. செய்தலோடும், implying when, or as soon as. 6. ஏல், a contraction of எனில், is, in poetry, added to any finite verb to form the subjunctive--as உண்ணுமேல், உண்ணுமெனில். 2. வினையெச்சக்குறிப்பு or குறிப்புவினையெச்சம், gerund of symbolic verbs; of these there are but two, இன்றி and அன்றி from இல் and அல், these symbolic verbs being redundant. சொல்லெச் சம், elliptical, or incomplete words, or classes, ten in number. 1. பெயரெச்சம், participles as given above. 2. வினையெச் சம், unfinished forms of the verb. (See above.) 3. உம்மையெச்சம், a sentence in which a second உம் and its adjunct are understood--as, சாத்தனும்வந்தான், Sattan also is come, implying that others are come or expected. 4. சொல்லெச்சம், a clause in which சொல்லல் is understood --as, என்றார் for என்றுசொன்னார். 5. பிரிநிலை யெச்சம், a clause in which an exception of persons, or things is implied, see ஏ and ஓ--as, அவனேகொண்டான், he bought it, implying that others did not. 6. எனவெனெச்சம், a clause in which a verb, or a noun is required after என--as, கடலொல்லெனவொலித்தது, the sea roared with the sound of ஒல். 7. ஒழியிசையெச்சம், a clause in which a counterpart is understood--as உண்ணுதற்கோவந்தான், was it to eat that he came (implying that his object was otherwise)? 8. எதிர்மறை யெச்சம், the ellipsis of a negative, or denial--as அவனோகொண்டான், Was it he that bought it (implying a negative answer). 9. இசையெச்சம், ellipsis generally comprising two or more words, such as are not found in the above--as நின்னையா னகன்றாற்றுவனோ, Can I endure separation from you (indicating an affectionate attachment to the party addressed)? 1. குறிப்பெச்சம், symbolic terms, contractions, abbreviations, &c., comprising several kinds. (See குறிப்பு.) There is another form called முற்றெச்சம், a finite verb used in the place of a gerund--as உண்டான்வந்தான் for உண்டுவந்தான், eating he came. எச்சமிட, inf. To befoul, to soil with dung--spoken of birds. எச்சவனுமானம், s. Inference of a past cause from a present effect. See அநுமானம். எச்சவாய், s. [vul.] The sphincter of the anus, the podex, குதம். அட்டவெச்சம், s. The eight defects in the human body; i. e. 1. சிதடு or குருடு, blindness. 2. ஊமை, dumbness. 3. செவிடு, deafness. 4. கூன், crookedness of the back. 5. குறள், dwarfness. 6. முடம், lameness. (சது.) (in பிங்கலந்தை and திவாகரம், யகண், மா, hermaphroditism). 7. உறுப்புமயக்கம், a monstrous birth either by redundancy, defect, or misplacing of the members, &c. 8. உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், a shapeless production, or a birth with the features not properly developed. 23)

Friends, associates, சினேகர். தீயாரைச்சார்ந்தார்தீயராவார். Those who join with the wicked will become wicked. ஒருவரைச்சார்ந்துபிழைக்க, inf. To live by the aid of another. (c.) சார்ந்துகொள்ள, inf. To lean or recline on. 2. To have recourse to. சார்மணை, s. [loc.] Any thing to lean on or recline against--as cushions, pillows, &c.; [ex மணை.] சார்மானம், s. (c.) அவருடைய சார்விலே யொதுங்கினான். He relied upon his help or protection. சார்வுதேட, inf. To seek protection, dependence, patronage. 26)

cīkkukkẕikkiṟtu (p. 190) v. noun. [prov.] A ceremony common among the Kallers, and Maravers, whereby a marriage becomes complete, and renders the offspring of such a marriage legitimate. (c.) 38) *

tavacu (p. 227) s. (also தபசு.) Religious austerities, penance, and self-mortification, to obtain power, or favor with some god. (See தவம்.) 2. Religious fasting in performance of vows, விரதம். (c.) W. p. 366. TAPAS. பிள்ளைக்குத்தவசிருக்கிறான். He is practising religious austerities to obtain offspring. தவசிலேநிற்க, inf. To stand for a long time in a posture of penance. 2. tāṉam (p. 236) --ஸ்தானம், s. Place, location, situation, spot, station, இடம். 2. Home, abode, dwelling, residence, locality; natural situation, habitation; elements of a creature, &c., இருப்பிடம். 3. Any part or member of the body, any particular or special part, உயிர்நிலை. 4. Any of the five seats or situations of the soul in the body. (See அவத்தை.) 5. Any special place, as the residence of the king or chief, இராசஸ் தானம். 6. A sacred shrine, the interior or most sacred spot in a temple, &c., சர்ப்பக் கிரகம். 7. The world of Indra, as சுவர்க்கம். 8. Strength, power, firmness, வலி. 9. Stage of life-poetically considered, செய் யுட்பொருத்தம். 1. Any of the four seats or sources of the sounds of the letters, எழுத்துப்பிறக்குமிடம். 11. [in numeration.] Place or digit, எண்ணின்தானம். 12. [in astrol.] Any of the twelve signs consulted, for predicting one's fortune, in reference to the planets and their situation in the signs, கிரகநிலை. 13. Any of the five places in the zodiac with respect to any given planet. 14. [vul. for ஸ்நானம்.] A bath. 15. (R.) The upright posture of the images of Vishnu, in distinction from the sitting. தானம், 5. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. The five arbitrary divisions of letters are அ, ஆ; இ, ஈ, ஐ; உ, ஊ, ஔ, எ, ஏ; ஒ; ஓ. தானவண்ணம், s. A curious kind of song, சுரவிகற்பப்பாட்டு. தானவரிசைபாட, inf. To sing with a tremendous noise. 13) *

nl (p. 270) --நல்ல, adj. [in combin. before க, ச, த, ப. changed to ற் and commonly before ம to ன்.] Good, excellent, beneficial, eminent, நன்மையான. 2. Acceptable, desirable, agreeable, ஏற்ற. 3. Abundant, copious, மிகுந்த. 4. Much, intence, அதிகமான. 5. Auspicious, propitious, fortunate, நன்னிமித்தமுள்ள.--Note. It is sometimes combined with words of had meaning to show intensity, as நல்லகள் ளன், a consummate thief. நல்லகாயம், s. Severe wound. நல்லகாய், s. Abundant fruit, மிகுகாய். இந்ததடவைநல்லகாய். The crop of fruit this time is abundant. நல்லகாலம், s. A propitious time; also நற்காலம். நல்லகுணம், s. Good temper, a benevolent, amiable disposition; also நற்குணம். நல்லகுணத்தோடேகொடு. Give, or pay freely. நல்லசடம், s. A helthy constitution, சுகசரீரம். நல்லசமயம், s. A good season, a favorable opportunity. நல்லசரக்கு, s. Superior goods, &c. See நற்சரக்கு. நல்லசனனம், s. A good birth. (Meton.) One blessed with a tendency to freedom form transmigration, and who employs his birth, to obtain salvation. நல்லசா, s. A good or auspicious death; not untimely, &c.; also நற்சா. நல்லசாமம், s. Midnight, dead of night, நடுச்சாமம். நல்லசெய்கை, s. A good, approved, or virtuous action. நல்லஞாபகம், s. As நல்லநினைப்பு. நல்லதண்ணீர்--நல்லசலம், s. Fresh, potable water. நல்லதண்ணீர்க்கடல், s. The sea of fresh water. நல்லதம்பிரான், s. [prov.] The hooded snake, regarded as a deity, நல்லபாம்பு. நல்லதரம், s. The first quality. நல்லதனம், s. Friendly, words, mildness, &c. நல்லதனம்பண்ண, inf. To pacify. நல்லது, appel. n. [pl. நல்லவை.] That which is good, well, very well, நன்மை யானது. நல்லதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak in one's favor. 2. To speak kindly. 3. To bid farewell. நல்லதுதீயது--நல்லதுபொல்லாதது, appel. n. Any thing good or evil. நல்லதுபண்ண, inf. To reconcile, gain one's friendship, make friends with one, propitiate one. நல்லதேட்டம், s. Acquisition of property by fair means. நியாயமானசம்பாத்தி யம். 2. Seeking benefits for the soul. ஆத்துமார்த்தம். நல்லத்தை, s. Father's sister. நல்லநடத்தை, s. Good deportment, virtuous conduct. நல்லநாள், s. An auspicious day. நல்லநாள்பெருநாள். A great day, a holy day. நல்லநினைப்பு, s. A good memory. நல்லபழக்கம், s. Good customs, habits, &c. நல்லபாம்பு, s. The female cobra-decapella, a very poisonous snake; the male is called சாரை and is nearly harmless. நல்லபிறப்பு, s. As நல்லசனனம். நல்லபுத்தி, s. Good atate of mind, good sense, good feeling, good understanding; also நற்புத்தி. 2. Polities; prudential, discreet measures; good policy. விவேகம். 3. Good instruction or advice, நற்போதனை. நல்லப்பன், s. [prov.] A paternal uncle. தகப்பனோடுகூடப்பிறந்தவன்; a domestic term. நல்லமத்தியானம், s. Exactly moon. நல்லமரணம்--நன்மரணம், s. See நல்லசா. நல்லமழை, s. Plentiful rain. நல்லமனம், s. A benevolent mind, நன்மனது. 2. Good temper, amiable disposition, a well disposed mind, நற்குணம். 3. Candor; தூயசிந்தை; also நன்மனம். நல்லமாரி, s. [prov.] A good, rainy season. நல்லமுகங்காட்ட, inf. To show a friendly face. நல்லமுட்டாள், s. A blockhead, மந் தன். 2. A hasty, peevish, irritable person, மடையன். நல்லமுருங்கை, s. Hyperanthera, Moringa, whose leaves and fruits are edible. நல்லமை, s. [prov.] Goodness, merit, virtue, நற்குணம். 2. Kindness, civility, friendliness. See நன்மை. நல்லம்மாள், s. [prov.] A maternal aunt, தாயின்சகோதரி. நல்லம்மான், s. A mother's brother, or maternal uncle. நல்லம்மான்பச்சரிசி, s. A plant, Euphorbia hypercifolia, L. நல்லவர், s. [plu.] Friends, மித்திரர். 2. The learned, the holy, சான்றோர். நல்லவழி, s. A good way; the way to heaven, மோட்சவழி. 2. Virtuous conduct, நன்னடக்கை. 3. Good parentage, family, descent, &c., நற்குலம். நல்லவளம், s. A good opportunity, a favorable time, வசதி. நல்லவன், s. [fem. நல்லவள்.] A good man. நல்லவாசனை, s. A fragrant smell, as நற்கந்தம். நல்லவார்த்தை--நல்வார்த்தை, s. Friendly words, இன்சொல், 2. Blessing, benediction, ஆசிவசனம். 3. A word of approbation, உவந்தசொல். நல்லவிளைவு--நல்லவிளைச்சல்--நல்வி ளைவு, v. noun. A good crop, an abundant harvest. நல்லவுடம்பு--நல்லுடம்பு, s. A healthy constitution, a body adapted to different habits. நல்லவெயில், s. A hot sun. நல்லவெல்லம், s. Jaggery. கருப்பங் கட்டி. நல்லவேளை, s. A fortunate hour, a lucky time, அதிஷ்டகாலம். 2. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. A lamp in the form of a five headed cobra, ஐந்தலைவிளக்கு. நாகதேவி--நாகம்மா, s. The cobra, as a goddess. நாகநாதன்--நாகநாயகன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். 2. As நாகதேவன். நாகபடம், s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A poem celebrating the different stages in the infancy and childhood of a hero, comprized in ten parts: 1. காப்பு, putting on the armrings, with magical rites; 2. செங்கீரை, first voluntary movements of the child compared to the motion of herbs by the breeze; 3. தால், lulling the child in the cradle with songs; 4. சப்பாணி, the first clapping of its hands; 5. முத்தம், kissing; 6. வாரானை, extending its hands and calling to be taken; 7. அம்புலி, showing the moon to the infant; 8. சிறுபறை, amusement of a small drum; 9. சிற்றில், making (in play) little houses, or trampling on those made by girls; 1. சிறுதேர். drawing little carriages.--Note. When a heroine is described, instead of the last three, the following are substituted, eighth கழங்கு, a kind of play with brass balls; ninth அம்மானை, a curious play with balls; tenth, ஊசல், swinging. There are two more compositions, bearing this title, one by குமரகுருபரதேசிகர், in praise of மீனாட்சி, the goddess at Madura; the other, by மார்க்கசகாயதேவர், of the childhood of Skanda. பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. A pregnant woman. பிள்ளைத்தேங்காய், s. The best kind of cocoa-nut, reserved for planting, நாற்றுத் தேங்காய். (Jaff.) பிள்ளைத்தேள், s. A centiped; Scolopendra, as மட்டைத்தேள். பிள்ளைப்பிறை, s. The youthful moon, இளஞ்சந்திரன். (p.) பிள்ளைப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of insect, the Gryllus, உழுவான், which going into mud is not defiled--so the spiritual man. பிள்ளைபெற, inf. To bring forth a child. பிள்ளைபெறாதமலடி, s. A barren woman, used of one who is cruel. பிள்ளைப்பெற்றவீடு, s. The house of a lying-in-woman, considered ceremoniously unclean. பிள்ளைப்பேறு, v. noun. Child-birth. பிள்ளைப்பேறறிந்தவள், s. A midwife. பிள்ளையைமஞ்சணீர்குடிக்கிறது, v. noun. Drinking turmeric water; i. e. adopting a child. பிள்ளைமாபிரபு, s. [prov.] A nobleman, an eminent person, பெருமையிற்சிறந்தோன். பிள்ளைமார், s. [pl.] Respectable men, gentlemen; men of the பிள்ளை caste. பிள்ளைமை, s.
