akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. akm (p. 2) s. Interior, inside, within, உள். அகக்கணு, s. In anatomy, inner tuberosity, அந்தப்பர்வகம். அகக்காழ்--அகங்காழ், s. The inside, solid part of timber, the heart of a tree. அகதேசி, s. [vul. அரதேசி.] A religious mendicant in his own country-used in opposition to பரதேசி. அகநிலை, s. The self-existent God, கடவுள். 2. Inside, உள்நிலை. அகவிதழ், s. Inner petals as found in the lotus and some other flowers; ex இதழ். (p.) 25)

akōrai (p. 3) s. An astrological division of the day into sections of one hour, or two and a half nalikies each, in which the seven planets reign successively, succeeding each other once in every cycle of seven hours. The order of succession is as follows, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. From this it follows as a matter of course, that the planet which gives name to the day commences its reign at sun-rise, ஓரையினுட்பிரிவு. 31)

akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

akkiram (p. 4) s. The point of any thing. நுனி. 2. In astronomy, amplitude, கிரகங் கீழ்மேல் வீதியகறல். (p.) அக்கிரசங்கை--அக்கிரசம்பாவனை, s. Civilities, honors, respect as paid to the first in order of a company. அக்கிரசர்மம், s. Foreskin, நுனித் தோல்; ex. சர்மம், skin. அக்கிரசன்மன், s. A priest. 2. Elder brother. 3. Brahma. அக்கிரபூசனை--அக்கிரபூசை, s. The respect paid to the principal person at a feast, or to the principal deity of a temple. அக்கிரமாமிசம், s. The heart. அக்கிரன்--அக்கிரியன், s. angkam (p. 5) s. A limb, member, part or organ of the body, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Mark, sign, அடையாளம். 4. Skeleton, எலும்புக்கூடு. 5. Symmetry, well formed human or other shape as of letters, &c., as பாவனை. 6. (p.) A division of learning comprehending such science as is considered dependent on the Vedas; hence called வே தாங்கம், சாங்கம், உபாங்கம் and பிரத்தியாங்கம். 7. A country, ஓர்தேயம். 8. A language, ஓர்பா ஷை. 9. A bedstead, கட்டில். Wils, p. 9. and 1. ANGA. அங்கசன், s. Kama, The Indian Cupid, மன்மதன்; ex ஜ, to be born. (p.) அங்கசாதனம், s. A sign, mark. (c.) 2. The signs of the stars, &c., at one's birth. அங்கசாதனம்பிடித்தல். Finding out any thing by signs or circumstances fixing suspicion upon one. அங்கசேட்டை--அங்கசேஷ்டை, s. Distortion of the countenance from habit, grimace; ex சேஷ்டை, gesture. அங்கநியாசம், s. A mental appropriation or the assignment of various parts of the body to tutelary divinities, by touching the several parts, and applying sacred ashes, accompanied with incantations, according to the usual mode of Hindu worship; ex. நியாஸ, arrangement. (p.) அங்கபடி--அங்கவடி, s. Stirrup, குதிரையங்கபடி. (c.) அங்கப்பிரதக்கணம்--அங்கப்பிரதட் சிணம், s. A mode of worship by rolling round a temple after a car, &c., turning to the right, in performance of a vow, &c.; (c.) ex பிர, before, et தட்சிணம், right. அங்கப்பிராயச்சித்தம், s. Expiation for bodily impurity, especially the oblation offered by the heir at the first funeral obsequies to remove the impurity contracted during the period of mourning. (c.) அங்கமாலை, s. A பிரபந்தம் or poem describing the principal members of the body, such as the eye, face, breasts, &c., in the female, and shoulders, arms, breast, &c., in the male. The order of description must be from the feet to the hair of the head, or from the head to the feet. (p.) அங்கயோகம், s. The eight qualities of a Yogi. See யோகம். (p.) அங்கரக்கா, s. [local] அங்கரட்சா. A jacket, மெய்ச்சட்டை. அங்கரட்சிணி, s. A coat of mail. (p.) அங்கராகம், s. Anointing the body with perfumes, sacred ashes, sandal, &c., ex ராகம், anointing. (p.) அங்கர், s. Inhabitants of the country, அங்கம். அங்கர்கோமான், s. Kannan the king of the அங்கம், country, கன்னன். (p.) அங்கவியல், s. The constituents of royalty. See அரசியல். (p.) அங்கவீனன், s. One who has bodily defects, குரூபி. (c.) அங்காதிபாதம், s. A system of anatomy; ex ஆதி first, et பாதம். (p.) அனங்கன், s. [priv. அந்.] One without body, உடலிலி. 2. The Deity, கடவுள். 3. Kama, மன்மதன். angkiṭuttti (p. 5) --அங்கிடுதுடுப்பன், s. One who frequently changes his party or place, நாடோடி. 2. One of fickle or vagrant habits, as to dwelling or otherwise, நிலைகெட்டவன். (c.) 30) *

acti (p. 5) s. Ridicule, scoffing, laughter, joking, pleasantry, சிரித்துப்பேசுகை. (p.) 2. (பஞ்.) Sunddenness, சடுதி. 3. Lightness, carelessness, (often used for அயர்தி). 4. Drowsiness, சோர்வு. 5. The name of a certain man who was praised by ஔவையார், supposed to be a shephered, ஔவையார் கேர வைபாடப்பெற்றவன். (c.) 6. (St.) An unchaste woman, வசவி. (p.) அசதிக்கோவை, s. The name of a book wherein a shepherd named அசதி is praised by ஔவையார்; it contains four hundred stanzas like all கோவை books. அசதிசன்னி, s. Apoplexy. (M. Dic.) அசதியற, (used adverbially.) Attentively, giving the whole attention, free from other dares. காதலர்தாய்தந்தைவைகுழி அசதியாடிலர், they indulge not in laughter in the presence of the father and mother of their husbands. 64) *

acumāṟṟm (p. 6) s. [prov.] Suspicion, ஐயம். 2. A hint, a conjectural circumstance, சைகை. அசுமாற்றங்காட்ட, inf. To give a hint commonly as one thief to another, or to make a noise as a thief, to ascertain whether people are at home or awake. அசுமாற்றப்பட, inf. To be heard as a noise, or seen as a sight exciting suspicion of thieves or of mischief at hand. 39)

acai (p. 7) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To move, stir, tremble, ஆட. 2. To waver, quiver, totter, not being able to support a weight--as a slender waisted woman is poetically described to waver in walking, from the weight of her breasts, தள்ளாட. 3. (p.) To lodge, sojourn, dwell in an appropriate place-- as men in houses, towns, &c. beasts in the forest, fishes in water, &c., சஞ்சரிக்க. 4. (c.) To walk or ride for recreation, be active, be engaged in the performance of works, in distinction from the quiescence of the Gnani, உலாவ. 5. To be indolent, inactive, idle, சோம்ப. 6. To be disturbed, discomposed, agitated, கலங்க. 7. To be weary, exhausted, faint, துவள. 8. To fluctuate, hesitate, be confused by a rebuke, தத்தளிக்க. அசைகை, v. noun. Motion, moving, அசைவு. 2. Conjectural circumstance--as a rustling among leaves may excite conjecture of a snake being there, ஐயம். அசையாநிலை, s. A fixed state, immovableness, steadfastness. அசையாமணி, s. A bell seldom rung; attached to the royal palace to inform the sovereign of any calamity of other extraordinary event, ஆராய்ச்சிமணி. அசையாமை, neg. v. noun. Firmness, fixedness, immovableness. அசைவாட, inf. To hover, move or stir--as wind on the surface of water. அசைவு, v. noun. Shaking, moving, motion, அசைதல். 2. A kind of swinging shelf, ஊசல். 3. Motion, passion, emotion as applicable to the qualities of the mind, மனவெழுச்சி. 4. Stir, bustle, agitation, சஞ்சலம். 5. Weariness, failure, fainting, சோர்வு. 3)

añcu (p. 7) s. Five. See ஐந்து. அஞ்சாம்வருணம், s. The fifth caste, Pariahs, &c. அஞ்சாலியிடையர், s. [prop. அஞ் சார இடையர்.] A tribe of cowherds; whose women wear, in their marriage neck jewel, five ornaments, or ஐந்தாலி. அஞ்சாரப்பெட்டி, s. [prop. அஞ்ச றைப்பெட்டி.] A box that has five compartments, one in the middle and four surrounding, made of palmyra leaves or other materials for containing flowers, spices, &c. அஞ்சுருவாணி, s. (as அச்சுருவா ணி.) An iron bolt passing through the five tiers of a car. அஞ்சுமூன்றுமுண்டானாலறியாப்பெண்ணுங் கறி யாக்கும். Even a young girl will be able to make a curry, when she has the following three and five things, viz., புளி, souring; மிளகு, pepper; உப்பு, salt; கடுகு, mustard; and சீரகம், cumin--which are the five; and the three are நீர், water; நெருப்பு; fire; and விறகு, fire-wood--said by an angry husband to his wife when the curry is not good. பூதங்கள் அஞ்சும் அகத்தேங்கும். The five elements will laugh within themselves. (குறள்.) 43)
