kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. (p.) The pericarp of a lotus, தாம ரைப்பூங்கொட்டை. Wils. p. 196. KARNIKA. 4. A flower-bud, பூவரும்பு. (p.) கா காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To keep, preserve. மானங்காத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To preserve one's self-respect, character, dignity. காவாமல், neg. ver. part. [vul. காக் காமல்.] Not keeping. தன்னைக்காக்க--தற்காக்க, inf. To keep one's self, to act so as to avoid blame, scandal, &c. காத்தல், v. noun. Defending, guarding, &c. காப்பு, v. noun. Preservation, defence, guard, protection, cherishing, பாது காப்பு. 2. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11. A door, கதவு. 12. Sacred ashes worn as an amulet, திருநீறு. 13. Clothes, ஆடை. காப்புக்கட்டில்லாமலெல்லாருமுள்ளேவரலாமா. Is it proper for all to come in without restraint? கன்னிகாதானம்--கன்னியாதானம், s. koṭṭai (p. 146) s. Seeds of any kind, not enclosed in chaff or husk; a nut, வித்து. 2. The stone, kernel or seed of a fruit, பழத்தின்கொட்டை. 3. Testicles, பீசம். 4. Rolls of cotton or flax prepared for spinning, பஞ்சுக்கொட்டை. 5. A plug or tent of cloth to widen the hole in the ear for jewels, திரி. 6. A kind of female ear ornament, ஓர்காதணி. 7. The knob of a wooden sandal, பாதகுறட்டின்குமிழ். 8. A pad for the head in carrying a load, சும்மாடு. 9. A bolster, a pillow; a cushion, தலையணை. 1. The pericarp of the lotus flower, with which the female body is compared for softness, தாமரைக்கொட்டை. 11. [prov.] The fruit buds of the jack tree, பலாப்பிஞ்சு. கொட்டைகட்ட, inf. To gamble with இருப்பை seeds, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. கொட்டைக்காய், s. A seedy or stony fruit; any fruit the stones or seeds of which are large, or numerous, in proportion to the pulp. கொட்டைக்கச்சி--கொட்டைக்கையில், s. [prov. vul.] The half of a cocoanut shell. See கொட்டங்கைச்சி. கொட்டைக்குவிட, inf. To let a plant go to seed. கொட்டைச்செத்தல்--கொட்டைத்தேங் காய், s. [prov.] A dry cocoanut in which the kernel rattles, கொப்பரைத்தேங்காய். கொட்டைநூற்க, inf. To spin cotton, flax, &c. கப்பலோடிப்பட்டகடன் கொட்டைநூற்றுத்தீரு மோ. Will the debt contracted by a ship merchant be paid by spinning cotton? கொட்டைபுதைக்க--கொட்டைதாழ்க்க, inf. To plant fruit stones. கொட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An entire arekanut dried without boiling. கொட்டைப்புளி, s. Pulp of tamarind fruit with the stones. கொட்டைப்போட, inf. To place seeds in garden beds, or to bury palmyra stones in the ground to grow. 2. To form the fruit buds--as the jack tree. 3. [vul. local.] To die, சாக. கொட்டைப்பெட்டி, s. A kind of basket for betel-nut, &c. 2. A basket for rolled cotton prepared for spinning. கொட்டைமுதல், s. [prov.] Capital in ready money, கைமுதல். கொட்டைமுத்து, s. The seeds or kernel of ஆமணக்கு. கொட்டைமுந்திரிகை, s. The cashewnut tree, முந்திரிகைமரம், Anacardium, L. கொட்டையிட, inf. To make rolls of cotton. கொட்டைக்கரந்தை, s. tāmarai (p. 234) s. The lotus flower, or waterlily, sacred to Brahma, Lukshmi, the sun, &c., கமலம், Nelumbium speciosum. (Willd.) W. p. 372. TAMARASA. There are different kinds--as ஆகாயத்தாமரை, ஓரிலைத்தாமரை, செந்தாமரை, மலைத்்தாமரை, வெண்தாமரை, which see. தாமரைக்கண்ணன், s. Vishnu, as lotuseyed, விஷ்ணு. தாமரைக்காய், s. The pericarp of a lotus. தாமரைக்கிழங்கு, s. Lotus roots, an article of food. தாமரைக்கொட்டை--தாமரைமணி, s. The seeds of the lotus. தாமரைச்சத்துரு, s. A kind of native arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். தாமரைத்தடாகம், s. A tank filed with lotus flowers--very meritorious for bathing. தாமரைநண்பன்--தாமரைநாயகன், s. The sun as lord of the lotus. தாமரைநாளம், s. A winding stalk of the lotus. தாமரைநூல், s. Fibres of the lotus stalk, used with ghee as a wick for lamps, deemed very meritorious and acceptable to Siva. தாமரைப்பூ--தாமரசபுஷ்பம், s. Lotus flower. தாமரைமொட்டு--தாமரைமொக்குள், s. Its flower-bud. தாமரையாசனன், s. Brahma, the lotusseated. தாமரையாசனி--தாமரையாள், s. Lukshmi. தாமரையாள், s. Yellow sulphuret of arsenic. 2. See தாமரையாசனி. தாமரையான், s. An epithet of Brahma, பிரமன். தாமரையிலை, s. The lotus leaves, which are used for spreading food for guests, &c. தாமரையிலைநீர், s. Crystal-like waterdrops on the lotus leaf, ever in motion; (a figure of a troubled mind.) தாமரைவளையம், s. Coils of the lotus stalk. தாமரைவற்றல், s.
