aṉāti (p. 33) s. [priv. அந், et ஆதி, beginning.] That which has no beginning, ஆதியின்மை. Wils. p. 28. ANADY. 2. (p.) [in grammar.] Priority to the immediate cause--as cotton to cloth made from it, the latter being preceded by the former; or a Sanscrit word to the same in Tamil characters, where the Tamil letters are ஆதிகாரணம், and the Sanscrit அனாதிகாரணம். 3. கடவுள். 4. Siva, சிவன். 5. Vishnu, விட் டுணு. அனாதிகாரணம், s. First cause or the cause of secondary causes--as cotton of cloth, thread, &c. (p.) அனாதிநாதர், s. One of the nine சித்தர். (p.) அனாதிமுத்தன், s. āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

eṇ (p. 73) s. Thought, imagination, conjecture, intention, எண்ணிக்கை. 2. Deliberation, counsel, care, விசாரம். 3. Number, enumeration, calculation, computation, இலக்கம். 4. Astronomical computation, astronomy, சோதிடநூல். 5. Estimation, esteem, honor respect, worthiness, மதிப்பு. 6. Strength, வலி. 7. Total measure, வரை யறை.--Note. Seven is regarded as the most lucky number, after which five and the other odd numbers have precedence. 8. Lowness in state or rank, inferiority, pitiableness, or despicableness, எளிமை. 9. Easiness of accomplishment, acquisition, access, &c.; what is not difficult, இலேசு. 1. A kind of rape, the plant or seed, எள்ளு. (p.) எண்ணுக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. 2. That which is incomprehensible. எண்ணுமெழுத்துங்கண்ணெனத்தகும். Arithmetic and grammar may be regarded as eyes. எண்ணெழுத்திகழேல். Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. (The army) crowded the whole field so that there was hardly any room left--not so much as even to hold a rape seed. எண்ணில்கண்ணுடையோன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Budha, புத்தன். (p.) எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time, அளவில்லாதகாலம். (சத.) எண்ணிறக்க, inf. To exceed computation, conception, அளவிறக்க. எண்ணின்வகுப்பு, s. The tamil enumeration table which consists of thirty-six digits; viz.: 1. ஏகம், units. 2. தசம், tens. 3. சதம், hundreds. 4. சகஸ் திரம், thousands. 5. அயுதம், ten thousands. 6. நியுதம், hundred thousands, &c. எண்ணும்மை, s. A numerical connective. See உம். எண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To prove, establish, உறுதிப்படுத்த. 38)

ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. To set out running, start out with speed, to flee; to begin to run. நீரோட்டம், s. A current, a stream. 78)

kẕuttu (p. 98) s. The neck of a person, brute, thing, &c., கண்டம். கழுத்தடி, s. The lower part of the nape of the neck, தோண்மேல். கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To cut the throat, to server the wind-pipe. முன்விட்டுப்பின்னின்றுகழுத்தறுக்கலாமோ...... Would you bid one take precedence and then cut his throat? ஒருவன்கழுத்திலேகட்டிவிட. To devolve unpleasant consequences on another. 2. To attribute a crime or blame to a person. 3. To impose on another unsaleable goods, or a woman ineligible for marriage. கழுத்திடுகயிறு, s. Halter for a beast. கழுத்திருத்த, inf. To have the neck pressed down with a heavy load. (c.) கழுத்திலேகயிறுபோட, inf. To threaten self-immolation for the purpose of recovering debts, &c. 2. To be very treacherous, insidious, perfidious. (c.). கழுத்துக்குட்டை, s. A neckcloth, a cravat. (c.) கழுத்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lay down the neck for another on the block, to subject one's self to inconvenience or danger. 2. To expose one's life by a commission of crime. 3. To submit to the yoke as bullocks. கழுத்துச்சந்து, s. The joint of the neck. கழுத்துச்சுளுக்கு, s. Straining of the ligaments of the neck by violent turning of the head. கழுத்துத்திருக, inf. To wring off the head of a fowl, &c. 2. To throttle, twist the head. கழுத்துநெடியபானை, s. A longnecked pot. கழுத்துப்பட்டிகை, s. A collar, a cape. கழுத்துப்பட்டை, s. The collar of a cloak. கழுத்துப்பருத்திருக்க, inf. To have a thick neck. கழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the ten பொருத்தம் for marriage, மணப்பொருத்தம் பத்திலோன்று. (c.) கழுத்துமுறிக்க--கழுத்தைமுறிக்க, inf. To break the neck--spoken of the power, &c., of demons. வேண்டாமென்றுகழுத்தைமுறிக்கிறான். He absolutely refuses, it is very repugnant to his feelings, &c. கழுத்துவெட்டி, s. A cut-throat, a betrayer, an assassin. (c.) கழுத்தூட்டி, s. The throat. (p.) கழுத்தேறுதண்டம், s. Aggravated or very heavy punishment. கழுத்தைநெரிக்க, inf. To throttle one. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman. 81)

kēṭu (p. 139) v. noun. Ruin, destruction, annihilation, அழிவு. 2. Loss, waste, damage, சிதைவு. 3. Degeneracy, depravity, கெடுதி. 4. Vice, debauchery, wickedness, corruption, துரோகம். 5. Injury, mischief, தீமை. 6. Adversity, indigence, wretchedness, வறுமை. 7. Ugliness, deformity, அந்தக்கேடு. 8. Want, destitution, குறைவு. 9. [in gram.] Elision, omission, கெடுதல்விகாரம்; [ex கெடு, v.] கேடுவரும்போது மதிகெட்டுவரும். Folly precedes destruction. கேடுகாலம், s. A time of ruin from drought or other causes--often used as an imprecation. See கெடுகாலம். கேடுகெட்டவன், s. A ruined, miserable person. 2. Slovenly, dirty wretch. கேடுபாடு, v. noun. The time when the head cannot support itself; i. e. infancy. தலைக்குத்தலைபெரியதனம். Every one is master. தலைமறைவாயிருக்கிறான். He hides his head-is concealed. தலையிலைகடை. Beginning, middle and end. தலையாலேநடக்கிறான். He acts proudly, insolently, wickedly, &c. அவனுக்குத்தலைப்பத்தா. Has he ten heads? Is he equal to ten men? பெருந்தலைகளெல்லாமொன்றாய்கூடின. The great heads, big-wigs, are all collected together. தலையாலேமலைபிளப்பான். He would cleave a mountain with his head. தலைகட்ட, inf. To tie the hair. 2. To make selvedge of mats, cloth, &c. தலைகவிழ--தலைகவிழ்க்க, inf. To hang the head , either naturally, or through shame. See கவிழ், v. தலைகனத்துக்கொள்ள--தலைகனக்க, s. See கன, v. தலைக்கனம், s. To bear, to suffer, (commonly in the negative.) 2. To interpose assistance, to undertake the whole business. தலைகொய்ய, inf. To behead. (p.) தலைக்கடை--தலைக்கடைவாயில், s. Front gate, or entrance--oppos. to புழைக் கடை. தலைக்கட்ட, inf. To perform the ceremony of putting on the turban again after mourning. 2. To succeed, be completed, accomplished. 3. To prosper, thrive, grow powerful, கைகூட. எடுத்தகாரியந்தலைக்கட்டிவந்தது. The thing was accomplished. தலைக்கட்டு, v. noun. The first of a range of buildings. 2. The head of a family. (c.) 3. [loc.] The ceremony of putting on the turban, as above. தலைக்கட்டுக்கிரண்டுபணம்வரிவாங்கினான். He received two fanams tribute from each house in the first range. தலைக்கட்டுவரி, s. Tax on houses. தலைக்கருவி--தலைச்சீரா--தலைச்சோடு, s. A helmet. தலைக்கறுப்பு, s. The black appearance of the head; used to express the approach of some influential person. என்தலைக்கறுப்புக்கண்டமாத்திரத்திலெழும்புவான். He will rise as soon as he sees the back of my head. தலைக்காய், s. The first fruits of a tree, being the finest. தலைக்காவல், s. The chief or mainguard. தலைக்கிறுகிறுப்பு, s. Dizziness. தலைக்குடி, s. The chief family in a place. தலைக்குத்து, s. Headache. See குத்து. தலைக்குமேலே, Above, over, or upon the head. 2. Superior to one. 3. Exceeding all bounds--as price, anger, shame or pride. தங்களுடையசொல்என்தலைக்குமேலே. I take your word upon my head; i. e. shall obey. தலைமேற்றலையா. Is my head above you; i. e. can I disobey? தலைக்குலை. The first bunch of the season. 2. [prov.] The end of a bunch of fruit. தலைக்குறை, s. A headless body. See under குறை. தலைக்கூட, inf. To assemble. தலைக்கூட்ட, inf. To accomplish any object, as தலைக்கட்ட. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head, either for bathing or combing. தலைக்கொம்பு, s. The bent front of a palankeen pole. 2. The place occupied by the front man. 3. [prov.] (fig.) A superior person. See கொம்பாபிள்ளை. தலைக்கொள்ள, inf. To reach the head, as poison, madness, liquor, &c., 2. To get ahead, to overflow, as a torrent. 3. (with பாதம்.) To worship, reverence, as தலைமேற்கொள்ள. தலைக்கோடை, s. [prov. தலைச்சோழகம்.] Beginning, or head of the west wind. தலைக்கோலம், s. Head-dress, headornament, &c. தலைசாய்க்க, inf. To bow the head, in homage, &c. See சாய். v. a. தலைசீவ--தலைவார, inf. To comb the head. தலைச்சங்கம், s. The first college at Madura in former times, containing the sixty-four persons. தலைச்சன்--தலைச்சன்பிள்ளை, s. The first born, corresponding with இடைச்சன். தலைச்சன்பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. A woman pregnant for the first time. தலைச்சார்த்து--தலைச்சீலை, s. A headdress. 2. A form of head-dress of white cloth. 3. A square turban, said to have been introduced to imitate the form of the cross. தலைச்சீரா, s. A helmet. தலைச்சுமை--தலைமூட்டை, s. A load or burden for the head. 2. Carrying a burden on the head. 3. (fig.) An arduous duty, a burden. தலைச்சுருளி--தலைச்சுருள்வள்ளி, s. A kind of plant, ஈசுரவேர், Aristolochia Ind. தலைச்சுழல்--தலைச்சுற்றல்--தலைச்சுழ ற்சி, v. noun. [prov.] Vertigo, dizziness. swimming of the head. தலைச்சுற்று, v. noun. Dizziness. 2. [prov.] Circumference of the butt end of a tree for estimating its size, மரச்சுற்று. தலைச்செய்ய, inf. [prov.] To prosper, to flourish, சித்திக்க. (c.) தலைச்சேரி, s. The town called Tellichery, ஓரூர். தலைச்சேர்வை, s. A title, a heading. தலைச்சோடு, s. See தலைச்சீரா. தலைதடவ, inf. To do one an injury secretly. 2. To inveigle. to swindle. தலையைத்தடவிமூளையைஉறிஞ்சுகிறவன். One who sucks up the brain by stroking the head i. e. deceives and embezzles. தலைதடுமாற்றந்தந்துபுணர்ந்துரைத்தல், v. noun. Treating of subjects out of the usual order for some particular purpose, one of the தந்திரவுத்தி. தலைதடுமாற்றம், s. Confusion, derangement, disorder. தலைதட்ட, inf. To strike the measure with the hand. See தலைவெட்ட. தலைதலையாக, [adverbially.] Head by head, one by one. தலைதாழ, inf. To incline the head, in reverence, through shame, &c. தலைதீய, inf. [local.] To perish--used in cursing. தலைதுலுக்க--தலைகுலுக்க, inf. To shake the head as animals for sacrifice when the sacred water is poured on them. தலைதுவட்ட, inf. To wipe, and soak up the moisture from the head after bathing. தலைதெறிக்க, inf. To break off as the head; to be severed from the body. தலைதொங்க--தலைதூங்க--தலைநால. inf. To hang as the head of a person, sick, or dying; to droop as plants. தலைதொட, inf. To take an oath. 2. (Christ usage.) To become sponsor to a child in baptism. இல்லையென்றென்தலையைத்தொடு. Touch my head and swear that it is not so. தலைதோய, inf. [prov.] To bathe for ceremonial purification or for health, without the use of oil. தலைத்திமிர், s. Heaviness of the head through cold, &c. தலைத்திராணம், s. A helmet, தலைச்சிரா. (சது.) தலைநடுக்கம்--தலைநடுக்கு, v. noun. Dizziness, giddiness. தலைநடுங்க, inf. To be dizzy, giddy, to feel the head to swim. 2. To have the head in motion, from palsy, age, &c. தலைநாள், s. The first lunar asterism, அச்சுவினி. (சது.) 2. The first day. 3. Early times, former times. தலைநிமிர்த்த, inf. To raise the head as one prostrated, or in water. 2. (fig.) To improve one's circumstances. 3. To bring one up to manhood. 4. To establish one in business, &c. தலைநிமிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Carrying the head erect--a good sign in cattle. 2. Grown up, passed from childhood. 3. Superiority, notoriety, conspicuousness of characters. 4. Improving in circumstances. 5. Pride, superciliousness. தலைநீட்ட, inf. To stretch the head. 2. (fig.) A repetition of the first word of a line, as ஆதிமடக்கு. 2. Grain given from the harvest, to a woman in care of a rest-house, which she ties up and carries away on her head. தலைமடங்க, inf. To hang the head. 2. To submit. 3. To bend as the ears of the corn, கதிர்சாய. தலைமடை, s. The place where a small channel branches off from a larger. 2. The head of a channel for irrigation, also the end where the water is laved out on plants. தலைமண்டை--தலையோடு, s. Head scholars. (c.) தலைமாலை, s. The garland of skulls worn by Siva, சிவன்மாலை. தலைமுழுக, inf. To bathe one's self, head and all. அவன்தலைமுழுகிப்போனான். She has bathed, --that is, had a monthly course. தலைமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing with oil. 2. A woman's monthly courses, catamenia, மகளிர்சூதகம். தலைமுறி, s. To take on the head; i. e. to obey implicitly. 2. To express submission. 3. To reverence. தலைமோதிக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. To walk about beating the head from sorrow or despair. தலையசைக்க, inf. To nod the head in approval, or shake it in displeasure. தலயடி--தலையடிப்பு, v. noun. Trouble, vexation, annoyance. 2. Why do you interfere in that business? தலையிடி, s. (inf. தலையிடிக்க.) A throbbing headache. தலையிலெடுத்துவிட--தலையில்தூக்கி விட, inf. To assist another to take up a load. தலையிலெழுத, inf. To write one's destiny in his head; ascribed to Brahma. தலையிலேறப்பார்க்க, inf. To endeavor to lord over others, or to treat them with disrespect. தலையிறக்கம், v. noun. Hanging the head through grief, chagri &c. தலையீற்று, v. noun. The first calving, yeaning, &c. 2. The firstling of cattle. தலையீற்றுப்பசு--தலையீற்றுக்கடாரி, s. A cow that has calved but once. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To break the head; i. e. to rack the brains and take great trouble in calculations, intricate business, &c. எவ்வளவாய்த்தலையுடைத்துக்கொண்டாலுங்கே ட்கிறானில்லை. Though I break me head for him. ever so much, he does not regard me. தலையுவா,s. The new moon. (p.) தலையெடுக்க, inf. To rise in circumstances, to recover one's standing. 2. To return to the attack when beaten by force. 3. To become eminent, celebrated. distinguished. 4. (lit.) To raise the head. தத்திக்குத்தித்தலையெடுத்துக்கொண்டான். He has risen in life, after many misfortunes. தலையெடுப்பு, v. noun. Amendment of circumstance. 2. Recovery from ruin. 3. Growing up, and establishing one's self in life, as a youth. 4. Loftiness. eminence, superiority, distinction. 5. Holding the head erect. தலையெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசாதே. Don't be arrogant in your remarks. தலையெடுப்பானகோபுரம். A lofty tower. தலையெழுத்து, s. Destiny, fate, as supposed to be written in the head by Brahma, according to the actions of previous births, தலைவிதி. 2. Signature to a bond or instrument, inserted at the beginning. 3. The heading or title of a book. 4. The first or capital letter in a writing. தலையேறுதண்டம், s. [prov.] Punishment above what one is able to bear. 2. (fig.) Excessive trouble or labour; compulsory service, அநியாயதண்டம். தலையைக்கொடுக்க--தலைகொடுக்க, inf. To step forward in one's behalf, in a case of exigency. 2. To expose one's self to danger for another. தலையைச்சுற்றியெறிய, inf. To detest utterly; to reject with disgust, disdain and scorn. தலையைநடுக்க, inf. To feel dizziness, sickness, slight intoxication--as from betel, tobacco, spirits, &c. தலையோடு, s. The skull. தலைவணங்க, inf. To do homage. 2. To fall or bend down--as corn in the field. Headache and fever, are know to the sufferer; i. e. each one knows his own trials. தலைவழிய, inf. To over-flow, as a cup or vessel. தலைவறை, s. A head land, cape, promontory. (Rare.) தலைவன், s. (plu. தலைவர், தலைவமார்.) A chief, a head man. 2. A king, a ruler, a governor. 3. An elder brother. 4. A husband. 5. A superior, a senior. (சது.) 6. A guru. 7. A master. தலைவாசகம், s. Introduction of a writing; preface, salutation, &c. முகவுரை. தலைவாசல்--தலைவாயில்--தலைவாய்தல், s. The main gate to a city, castle, house, &c. தலைவாரை--தலைவாரைப்பட்டை, s. [prov.] A basket cap, as தலைப்பட்டை. தலைவாழையிலை, s. The top leaf of a plantain tree. தலைவி, s. (mas. தலைவன்.) A lady, a mistress, a matron. 2. A wife, மனைவி. தலைவிதி, s. Fate written in the head. See தலையெழுத்து. தலைவிரிகோலம், s. Dishevelled locks of persons in a fright, in sorrow, &c. தலைவிரிச்சான், appel. n. One with matted hair, தலைமயிர்முடியாதவன். 2. A plant, சாரணை. 3.
