iṟaiñcu (p. 57) கிறேன், இறைஞ்சினே ன், வேன், இறைஞ்ச, v. n. To stoop, bow, bend, incline the head, குனிய. 2. v. a. To make obeisance, to reverence, worship by bending or prostration, வணங்க. (p.) உலகறிந்திறைஞ்சுமாபெருமை. Greatness which the world shall know and reverence. நோக்கியிறைஞ்சினாள். She looked and bowed her head. (குறள்.) இறைஞ்சலர்--இறைஞ்சார், s. aiyeṉl (p. 80) . A particle denoting speed, urgency, விரைவுக்குறிப்பு. ஐயெனத்தொழுதுவீரனந்தணனுயிரைமீட்டு. The valiant (Arjuna) speedily prostrating himself before him, saved the life of the brahman. (பாரத.) 28)

kiṭ (p. 108) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To lie, lie down, lie in a state of sleep or inactivity, &c., to lie-as a stone, or other lifeless bodies, படுக்க. 2. To be in a state or condition, to exist, இருக்க. 3. To remain, to continue, தரித்திருக்க.--Note. It is often used contemptuously, and sometimes assumes a transitive form. கிடக்கட்டும். Never mind; it is of no consequence; let it be; leave it untouched. அதுவெகுநாளைக்குக் கிடக்கும். It will endure a long time; will last long. காரணங்கிடக்கும். There is a cause. முட்டக்கிடவாது. It will not bear a slight hit or shove. ஊர்அமர்க்களமாய்க்கிடக்கிறது. There is a row or riot in town, lit. the country is a battlefield. அதுகிடக்க. Leaving that; further more. சும்மாகிட. Be quiet, hush. சென்றதுகிடந்திட. Leaving what is past. பகைவர்வருகிறாரென்று கிடக்கிறது. The rumour, the report is, that the enemy is coming. வியாதியாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be sick. கிடக்கை, v. noun. Lying, கிடத்தல். 2. s. State, condition, நிலைமை. 3. A bed, a couch, any sleeping place, படுக்கை. 4. The earth, பூமி. மனக்கிடக்கை, s. A feeling, as it exists in the mind; one's own feeling, மனக்கருத்து. 2. Emotion, pathos, passion, உளத்தியல். கிடப்பு, v. noun. Lying, கிடக்கை. 2. s. State, condition--commonly undersirable--as suffering, hunger, &c., இருக்கை. கிடை, v. noun. Lying, lying prostrate, a reclining posture, கிடக்கை. 2. s. State, condition--commonly not desirable, நிலை மை. 3. A fold, a pen, a stall, a nest, a lair, any place where beasts or birds lie, --as ஆட்டுக்கிடை, a sheep-fold, மாட்டுக் கிடை, a cow-stall, &c. கிடைகாட்ட, inf. To lie on the back-as beasts when dying. கிடைகூட்ட--கிடைமறிக்க--கிடைவை க்க, inf. To pen up or fold cattle for their manure. கிடைச்சரக்கு, s. Goods lying long on hand. கிடைதலை, s. The condition of being bed-ridden; prostration by sickness or old age. கிடைநாய், s. A shepherd's dog. கிடைப்பட, inf. To be laid on a bed of sickness, to lie ill. கிடைப்பாடு, v. noun. Lingering on a bed of sickness; being bed-ridden, being long lost, by theft, &c. கிடைபாய், s. Bed-mat, a mat for sleeping on. See பாய். கிடைமாடு, s. Cows in a pen, கிடையி லுள்ளமாடு. கட்டுக்கிடையாயிருக்க, inf. To lie a long time unopened, and thus liable to damage. கிடந்தகிடை, Lying as before. கிடந்தகிடையிலேகிடக்கிறான். He still lies as he did. 2. He remains as he was. கிடந்தகிடையைமறந்துவிட்டான். He has forgotten his former estate. நான்மூன்றுமாசங்கிடைவிடவில்லை. I have not left my bed for these three months. கிடவாக்கிடை, [vul.] Hardship, unusual severity, hunger, &c., கஷ்டம். கிடவாக்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be starved. 2. To pinch one's self. 27)

cattinipātam (p. 159) s. [in the agamas.] The degree of spiritual advancement in which there is an utter mortification of self, and self-energizing principles, and a ripening of the soul for union with the deity; [ex சத்தி, self energy, et நிபாதம், prostration.] சத்திநிபாதர், s. Those in whom self will is subdued, and who tend toward the deity, மனதையடக்கித் தெய்வம்வழிபடுவோர். 60) *

cāṭṭāngkam (p. 174) --சாஷ்டாங்கம், s. Prostration in worship, or reverence by bringing eight parts of the body in contact with the ground. viz.; the hands, the feet, the breast, the shoulders and forehead, தெய்வவணக்கம். 2. civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. Fine for not rendering homage to the Punjayet--as arbitrators for deciding a cause. தீர்க்கதண்டமாய்விழ, inf. To prostrate one's self very low, and raise the hands. பிடிதண்டம், s. [prov.] Unjust seizure of an innocent person. தண்டதரன், s. Yama, the god of death; (lit.) the club bearer, நமன்; also தண் டன். 2. Bhima, வீமன். (p.) தண்டநாயகன், s. Chief of an army, சேனாபதி. 2. A king, as receiving fines, அரசன். 3. Nandy, the bullock-vehicle of Siva, நந்தி. (p.) தண்டபாணி, s. Yama, நமன். 2. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. 3. tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. Go directly east. திக்காதிக்கு--திக்காலுக்கு, [prov.] In various directions, here and there, பலதிசையிலும். திக்காலுக்கொருத்தராய்ப்போய்விட்டார்கள். North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)
