krukku (p. 96) கிறேன், கருக்கினேன் வே ன், கருக்க v. a. To burn, to tinder, கருகச் செய்ய. 2. To scorch, toast, fry, parch, to imbrown or darken by heat, to tan கறுப் போடவாட்ட, 3. To scorch corn; to tan the countenance, referring to the action of the sun, &c., தீக்க. 4. [vul.] To harass by rebukes, திட்ட. சாராயமீரலைக்கருக்கிப்போடும். Ardent spirits consume the liver. ஆளைக்கருக்கிப்போட்டார்கள். They have greatly harassed the person by reproofs. பத்தியத்துக்குகருக்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To fry or cook (food) and give it to a patient-as a proper diet. மனதைக்கருக்க, inf. To wound the feelings, to offend. கருக்கல், v. noun. The act of blackening. 2. kāṭci (p. 103) s. Sight, view, பார்்வை. 2. An object of sight, visible appearance, தோற் றம். 3. The manifestation of a deity or the sight of a great personage, தரிசனம். 4. (p.) [in logic.] Perception, evidence of the senses, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். 5. Knowledge, intelligence, ascertainment, அறிவு. 6. [in erotics.] One of the ten அவத்்தை, the first view which a bridegroom has of his bride, விரகாவஸ்தைக்காட்சி. 7. (c.) Anomaly, a strange event, நூதனக்காட்சி.--Note. In the agama logic, seven species of perception are given, viz.: 1. ஐயக்காட்சி, Indistinct apprehension, doubt, uncertainty, hesitation. 2. திரிபுக்காட்சி, misapprehension, misconception, optical or mental illusion. 3. விகற் பக்காட்சி, discrimination or knowledge to distinguish things one from another in five particulars, viz.: in name, kind, quality, action, and substance. or matter. 4. பொ றிவாயிற்காட்சி, perception of the sences, with the aid of the mental faculties. 5. மனக் காட்சி, or மானதக்காட்சி, ideas formed in the mind of things perceived by the senses. 6. அனுபவக்காட்சி, perception by actual experience of the exercise of the affecions towards objects perceived. 7. யோகக்காட்சி, the spiritual perception of the Yoga, or knowledge of events past, present or future, by abstract devotion--Note. 2d. Each of the above has two divisions, one, புறம்-abroad, relating to external or secular affairs; the other, அகம்-- at home, to religious affairs. கண்ணுக்குக்காட்சிகடவுளுக்குங்காட்சி. What is pleasing to the sight is pleasing to the deity--referring to the ornaments of the temple, rich offerings, &c. கண்ணுள்ளபோதே காட்சி. Gratify your sight while you can. காட்சிகொடுக்க, inf. To manifest himself--as a deity. காட்சிப்பிரமாணம், s. [in logic.] One of the eight modes of ascertaining truth. See பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். காட்சிப்பொருள், s. Things seen, objects of sight or sense--as distinguished from கருத்துப்பொருள். or mental objects. காட்சிமறைத்தல், v. noun. Hinderance in seeing or observing any thing. See அஷ்டகுற்றம். காட்சியர்-காட்சியவர்--காட்சியார், s. The wise, அறிஞர். காட்சியாக, inf. To appear in a vision. காட்சியுணர்வு, s. The sense of sight, காட்சியறிவு. காணாக்காட்சி, s. An extraordinary sight, a wonderful occurrence. 2. An ill omen. திருக்காட்சி, s. A divine meditation. காரணக்காட்சி, s. A great sight or event which may be the cause of future effects. 81) *

Machine, engine, any piece of mechanism; mechanism of the body or otherwise; the spring in a machine; that which gives impulse, momentum, effect, &c.--as the helm of the ship, the lock of a gun, &c., இயந்திரம். 2. Ingenious contrivance, puzzle, சூட்சவேலை. 3. Stratagem, artifice, artful trick, உபாயம். 4. Point, gist, hinge, substance of a thing, அரும்பொருளடக்கம். 5. A secret, a mystery, இரகசியம். 6. Rule, canon, definition, precept, axiom, formula. இலக்கணசூத்திரம். 7. W. p. 94. SOOTRA. Guide, clue, directory, key, index, குறிப்பு. 8. Proposition, doctrine, predicated dogma, கொள்கைச்சூத்திரம். 9. Thread, yarn, twine, line, cord, பஞ்சிநூல். --Note. Rules in Garmmar or other works are of six kinds: 1. பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், the opening of a subject by giving an abstract of the work. 2. தொகைச்சூத்திரம், a synopsis, the divisions in brief, their number, &c., a general rule. 3. வகைச்சூத்திரம், an analysis with general divisions; particular rules. 4. குறிச்சூத்திரம், definitions, &c., demonstrative rules. 5. செய்கைச்சூத்திரம், directory, as in grammar, for permutation, elision, &c., connective rules. 6. புறனடைச்சூத்திரம், supplementary rules to obviate objections; give reasons, explanations, &c., respective rules. Thess are sometimes reduced to two, குறிச்சூத்திரம் and செய்கைச்சூத்திரம். சாத்திரத்தைச்சுட்டுச் சதுமறையைப் பொய்யாக்கி சூத்திரத்தைக்கண்டுசுகம்பெறுவதெக்காலம். When shall the shastras be burnt, the four Vedas proved false, and I through a knowledge of the mystery, be made happy? சூத்திரக்காரன், s. An ingenious or curious artist, an engineer, சூட்சவேலைக்காரன். 2. A man of fine parts, of quick perception, ready wit, &c., சூட்சபுத்தியுள்ளவன். 3. A man of good tact, management, economy, கெட்டிக்காரன். சூத்திரக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. 2. The strings of a purse, a bag, &c. (Compare சூட்சக்க யிறு.) 3. Any thing that puts a machine in motion. 4. The unseen line or spring of creature action, as moved by the divine hand in every event of life, கடவுளது சூட்சம். சூத்திரதாரி, s. The man who manages the springs, strings. &c., of a puppet, பதிமையாட்டி. 2. God--as moving all things, கடவுள். (p.) சூத்திரநிலை, s. The arrangement of rules in grammar, or other scientific or literary works; being of four kinds: 1. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, rules following each other in a regular order. (See ஆறு.) 2. சிங்க நோக்கு, rules having reference to those preceding and following. (See சிங்கம்.) 3. தவளைப்பாய்த்து, a rule referring to the next but one preceding or succeeding. (See தவளை.) 4. பருந்தின்வீழ்வு, a rule referring to several other rules distant from each other. See பருந்து. சூத்திரப்பா, s. [com. நூற்பா.] A simple, easy kind of metre, a species of அகவல். being of a didactic or prosaic metre, adapted to treatises of instruction. The நன்னூல், திவாகரம், பிங்கலந்தை and other works are written in this style. சூத்திரப்பதிமை--சூத்திரப்பாவை--சூத் திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A puppet moved by springs, strings, &c. 2. Creatures--human especially--as influenced by the Supreme Being in all their actions. சூத்திரப்பதிமையாட்டுகிறவன், appel. n. A puppet player. 2. (fig.) A subordinate who having gained the mind of his superior directs it at his own pleasure. சூத்திரப்புறனடை, s. Note appended to a rule, &c., ina literary or scientific work. சூத்திரப்பெட்டி, s. A box whose lock is a puzzle. சூத்திரமாட்ட, inf. To put the machine in operation. (c.) சூத்திரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the form of a rule, a text, a mystery or contrivance. சூத்திரமானகனவு, s. Ingenious theft, artful fraud. சூத்திரர், s. Artificers, mechanics, engineers, architects, carpenters, &c., தச்சர் முதலானோர். 2. See சூத்திரன். சூத்திரம்வைக்க, inf. To contrive plans. சூத்திரவேலை, s. An ingenious piece of mechanism. See சூட்சமானவேலை. சூத்திரவிருத்தி, s. An explanation of a part of the தொல்காப்பியம். சூத்திரி, s. A mechanist. (p.) 20)

tāṉam (p. 236) --ஸ்தானம், s. Place, location, situation, spot, station, இடம். 2. Home, abode, dwelling, residence, locality; natural situation, habitation; elements of a creature, &c., இருப்பிடம். 3. Any part or member of the body, any particular or special part, உயிர்நிலை. 4. Any of the five seats or situations of the soul in the body. (See அவத்தை.) 5. Any special place, as the residence of the king or chief, இராசஸ் தானம். 6. A sacred shrine, the interior or most sacred spot in a temple, &c., சர்ப்பக் கிரகம். 7. The world of Indra, as சுவர்க்கம். 8. Strength, power, firmness, வலி. 9. Stage of life-poetically considered, செய் யுட்பொருத்தம். 1. Any of the four seats or sources of the sounds of the letters, எழுத்துப்பிறக்குமிடம். 11. [in numeration.] Place or digit, எண்ணின்தானம். 12. [in astrol.] Any of the twelve signs consulted, for predicting one's fortune, in reference to the planets and their situation in the signs, கிரகநிலை. 13. Any of the five places in the zodiac with respect to any given planet. 14. [vul. for ஸ்நானம்.] A bath. 15. (R.) The upright posture of the images of Vishnu, in distinction from the sitting. தானம், 5. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. The five arbitrary divisions of letters are அ, ஆ; இ, ஈ, ஐ; உ, ஊ, ஔ, எ, ஏ; ஒ; ஓ. தானவண்ணம், s. A curious kind of song, சுரவிகற்பப்பாட்டு. தானவரிசைபாட, inf. To sing with a tremendous noise. 13) *

pṟṟu (p. 304) கிறேன், பற்றினேன், வேன், பற்ற, v. a. To grasp, seize, catch, hold, பிடிக்க. 2. To receive, accept, embrace, வாங்க. 3. To attach, adhere, cling to, அடுக்க. 4. To insinuate itself, to take effect as poison, &c., பிடிப்புற. 5. To dye, to tinge, to take, as color, நிறக்க. 6. To kindle, as fire, anger, desire, &c., to ignite, தீமூள. 7. To apprehend, to comprehend, கிரகிக்க. 8. To pursue, aim at a thing தொடர. 9. To stick, ஓட்ட. 1. To become joined or welded, as metals soldered, &c., பொருந்த. 11. To be sufficient, போதுமானதாக. 12. To smart, to feel pungent, as pepper in the eyes, உறைக்க. 13. To be formed in the mind, as thoughts or opinions, எண்ணமு ண்டாக. 14. To form, as rust, as flowerbuds, as a flower, a young fruit, a stone in the fruit, துருமுதலியபிடிக்க. 15. To drive away. &c., துரத்த, used in the South. (c.) பணம்பற்றிக்கொண்டேன். I have received the money வரப்பற்றிக்கொண்டேன். The money, or goods, sent, came to my hands, I took charge of them. வீட்டிலேநெருப்புப்பற்றிக்கொண்டது. The house took fire. பற்றவில்லை. It is insufficient. 2. It does not stick, kindle, &c. பற்றாது. It is not enough. பற்றாக்குறைக்குநீவந்தாயோ. Did you come to share in what is insufficient for me? மாட்டைப்பற்றிக்கொண்டுவா. Drive the oxen here. பற்றும்பற்றாமலிருக்கிறது. It is not quite sufficient. கரையைப்பற்றிவா. Come towards the shore. மயிர்பற்றிப்போயிற்று. The animal has become shaggy. commonly spoken of sheep. பற்றவைக்க, inf. [prov. பற்றச்சுட.] To solder, To weld 2. To kindle a fire. 3. [fig.] To make enemies, to sow discord. அவனிடத்திலே பற்றவைத்துவிட்டான். . . . . . . He referred the matter to another. பற்றற்றார்--பற்றற்றோர், appel. n. Turns by which duty or work is done, வரிசை. 1. A book, புத்தகம். உனக்கும்அவனுக்்கும்முறையென்ன. What relationship is there between you and him? அம்மான்பெண்ணைக்கொள்ளுகிறதுமுறைதான்...... Marriage contract with the daughter of a mother's brother is lawful. அக்காளைக்கொண்டால்தங்கைக்குமுறைகேட்கவேண் டுமா. Is it necessary to inquire whether it is lawful to marry a younger sister when you have married the elder? இதுனக்குமுறையல்ல. This does not become you. இன்றைக்குஎன்முறை. It is my turn to-day. அறமுறையிடுதல், v. noun. Complaining grievously. திருமுறை, s. A name given by Saivas to a book of Manikavasakar; (lit.) the sacred complaint. முறைகாரர், s. Arrangement of a series of verbs, nouns, &c., in the order of their nominatives and objectives, as-இரணியநாட்டனிரணியனீரைந்தலையன்கஞ்சன் முரணியகோட்டினகத்திற்சரத்தின்மூன்றாயிற்றுஞ்சத் தரணியிற்குத்தியிடந்தெய்துதைத்தவன்சர்ப்பவெற்பன் அரணியகேழலரிராகவன்கண்ணனாகிவந்தே.....The god of Tirupati is he who, assuming the forms of a Hog, of a Lion, of Rama, and of Krishna, pierced, lacerated, shot and kicked, by means of his tusk, claws, arrow and feet; so that these four persons, இரணியாட்சன், இரணியன், ஈரைந்தலையன், and கஞ்சன், were killed. Observe the four subjects in the first line are employed as nominatives to துஞ்ச, and the four instruments follow next in order just before their respective effects, and the true nominatives in the verse are placed last, referring to the four exploits performed by the four agents. முறைபிழை, s. The reverse, as விலோ மம். முறைபிழைத்தல், v. noun. Transgressing a rule or law. (p.) முறைப்பட, inf. To complain, to murmur. முறைப்பாடு, v. noun. A complaint. முறைமசக்கு, s.
