ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)

The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. Saffron and other powders used at a temple. திருச்சூரணம், s. A paste with which the forehead is marked. திருச்சூரணபரிபாலனம், s. A ceremony among Vaishnuvas on removing a dead body from the house. திருச்செந்தூர்--திருச்சீரலைவாய், s. A town near Ramisseram, one of the six places sacred to Subramanya. திருச்செவி, s. The ear of a great, or divine person. திருத்தொண்டர், s. (plu.) Servants of the deity, especially sixty-three devotees of Siva. திருத்தொண்டு, s. Meritorious services performed to a deity. திருநடனம், s. See திருக்கூத்து. திருநயனம், s. The eyes of deity or a holy person, as திருக்கண். திருநாமக்கத்திரி, s. A kind of snake, ஓர்பாம்பு. திருநாமச்செடி, s. A plant, Artemisia vulgaris, L. திருநாமத்துத்தி, s. A plant, ஓர்செடி. திருநாமப்பாலை, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Periploca tunicata, L. திருநாமம், s. A sacred name, the name of a deity or holy person. 2. The Vaishnuva sectarian mark on the forehead. 3. A divine song. திருநாளைப்போவார், appel. n. One of the sixty-three devotees of Siva. திருநாள், s. A religious festival, a great or special day, a holy day. திருநீலகண்டன், s. A large kind of centiped, ஓர்பூரான். 2. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva, சிவனடியாரிலொரு வன். 3. A very wicked man. திருநீறு, s. (also விபூதி.) Sacred ashes of burnt cowdung, one of the chief marks of the Saiva sect. திருநீறணிய--திருநீறிட--திருநீறுபூச, inf. To rub sacred ashes on the forehead, breast, &c. திருநீறுசுட--திருநீறுவிளைவிக்க, inf. To make sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுக்காப்பு, s. Sacred ashes rubbed on one's forehead by a great person as a charm or for benefit to the soul. 2. As திருநீறு. திருநீற்றுக்கோயில்--திருநீற்றுப்பை, s. A bag for sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுப்பச்சை--திருநீற்றுப்பத்திரி, s. A species of fragrant ever-green shrub used for perfuming the திருநீறு, also medicinal sweet Basil, உருத்திரசடைப்பூடு, Ocymun basilicum, L. திருநீற்றுப்பழம், s. Balls of sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுமடல், s. A metal stand in a temple with an urn like the sheaths of a pine flower, for sacred ashes. திருநெல்வேலி, s. A town south of Madura, Tinnevelly, ஓர்பட்டணம். திருநெற்றிமாலை, s. A garland for the forehead of an idol. திருநோக்கு, s. The gracious look of the deity, or a great person. 2. The official look of the guru in the administration of the தீட்சை. திருப்படைவீடு, s. Places sacred to Siva, Vishnu, &c., who are supposed to be present with their retinue at their respective shrines. திருப்பணி, s. Service in an idol temple, கோயிற்சேவகம். 2. Work on the temple as masonry, carpentry, &c., கோயில்வேலை. திருப்பணிமுட்டு, s. Materials, &c., for building a temple. திருப்பதி, s. Tripaty, a place sacred to Vishnu. (See வடமலை and திசை.) 2. Any one of the one-hundred and eight Vishnu shrines, விஷ்ணுஸ்தலம். திருப்பரங்குன்று, s. A hill west of Madura, one of the six places sacred to Subramanya, சுப்பிரமணியர்ஸ்தலம். திருப்பரம், s. Boiled rice, சோறு--a word used by brahmans only, குழூஉக்குறி. திருப்பள்ளி, s. A place of repose, especially of an image, சயனதலம். திருப்பள்ளிகொள்ள, inf. To rest, especially spoken of an idol. திருப்பள்ளித்தாமம், s. Garlands for the idol, கோயிற்பூமாலை. திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி, v. noun. The early rising of the god--a song daily sung to awaken the god, especially of a festival of ten days in December; also sung by the people on these days to rouse one another to their religious duties, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். திருப்பாடல், s. A hymn, a sacred song. திருப்பாட்டு, s. Hymns or songs in praise of a deity, commonly ancient. 2. [in irony.] A satire, lampoons. திருப்பாவாடை, s. A long cloth on which offerings of rice are presented to idols. திருப்புகழ், s. Songs, odes in praise of a god. திருப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Putting on the wedding badge, as the essential part of marriage, தாலிகட்டுகை. 2. The wedding badge, தாலி. திருமகள்--திருமாது, s. Lukshmi. திருமகண்மைந்தன், s. Kama; [ex மைந் தன், son.] திருமஞ்சனம், s.
