cilā (p. 186) s. A stone, a rock, கல். Sa. Sila.--Note. The word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation in the compounds. The Tamil word from this is சிலை, which see. சிலாசாதனம், s. An engraving on stone. See சாதனம். சிலாதலம், s. A stony surface, பாறை. 2. Stone seats, கல்பரப்பியவிடம். சிலாநதி, s. Name of a river, (lit.) a stony river, ஓர்நதி. சிலாவங்கம், s. A kind of stone, or one containing lead, ஈயக்கல். சிலாவட்டம், s. A hone, a grind-stone, சாணைக்கல். (சது.) சிலாவருடம்--சிலாவருஷம், s. Showers, or tempests of stones, கன்மழை. 2. One of the seven-fold classes of clouds to be employed for the destruction of the universe, at the general delugé. See முகில். சிலாவிக்கிரகம், s. A stone-idol. 34)

nāṭi (p. 273) s. W. p. 46. NADI. Pulse especially at the wrist, sometimes at the foot, தாது. 2. An Indian hour of twentyfour minutes, நாழிகை. (c.) 3. An artery, a vein, tendon, sinew, muscle, nerve, ligament, நரம்பு. 4. String of a guitar, யாழ் நரம்பு. 5. Any thing tubular, tube, pipe, tupularity, உட்டுளை. 6. Nose, மூக்கு. 7. A man's lock of hair, ஆண்மயிர். (சது.) 8. The hollow stalk of the lotus, தாமரைத்தாள்.-There are three varieties of pluse; 1. வாத நாடி, indicating acid humors, hypochondria, &c., and felt by the fore-finger. 2. பித்தநாடி, indicating billous humors, felt by the second finger. 3. சிலேட்டுமநாடி, indicating phlegmatic humors, felt by the third finger,--Note. In healthy persons, cach நாடி is supposed to be prevalent for ten நாழிகை, or four hours of the day and night alike, beginning from sunrise and from sunset; any derangement of these is regarded as indicative of disease. தசநாடி, s. The ten nerves are: 1. சுழிமுனை, passing through the six ஆதாரம்; 2. இடை. beginning from the great toe of the right foot and passing up to the left nostril; 3. பிங்கலை, beginning from the great toe of the left foot, and passing up to the right nostril, crossing each other in five different places; 4. காந்தாரி, beginning at the navel and passing to the neck, where they assume a seven-fold form, being the sources of the seven musical tones of the human voice; 5. அத்தி; 6. சிகுவை, situated in the region of the eyes forming ten branches, as optical nerves; 7. அலம் புடை. 8. புருடன், in the region of the ears forming 12 branches or auditory nerves; 9. குரு, beginning at the navel and reaching to the verenda; 1. சங்கி னி, situated in the verenda,--Note. There are said to be 72, pulses in the body. அவன் ஓடிப்பாடி நாடியிலடங்கினான். His power, and bustle, have come to an end said of an extravagant person reduce to poverty. நாடிக்குறி, s. Indication of the pulse. நாடிதாரணை, s. The system of nerves and arteries with their ramifications. நாடிநிலை, s. State of the pulse. நாடிபார்க்க, inf. To feel the pulse. See தாதுபார்க்க. நாடிபரீட்சை, s. Acquainted with the pulse. நாடியறிய, inf. To be acquainted with the system of pulsation in its threefold variety. நாடியெழும்புதல், v. noun. Populated country or district, as distinguished from forest tracts, தேசம். (c.) 4. (சது.) Place, room, space, area, பரப்பு. 5. Locality, situation, இடம். 6. Earth, land, as distinguished from sea, பூமி. 7. The world, உலகம். 8. Side, region, quarter, பக்கம். --Note. The five principal countries of SouthernIndia, are: 1. தொண்டவளநாடு, Tonda; 2. சோழவளநாடு. Chola; 3. பாண்டிவளநாடு; Pandia; 4. கொங்குவளநாடு. Kongu; 5. மலைநாடு, Malyalam. Of districts are தொட்டியநாடு, Dottiya; நாஞ்சிநாடு, in Malyalam, and மறவ வாடு, the Marava province. நாடெங்கும்வாழக்கேடொன்றுமில்லை. When a country prospers, there is no insurrection. (Avv.) திருநாடு, s. A name of Vaikuntha the paradise of Vishnu. நாடுசார்நிலம், s. Ground adapted to the growth of rice. நாடுபடிதல், v. noun. Obeying, submitting as a country to its rulers, நாட் டார்வசப்படுதல். நாடுபடுதிரவியம், s. Country productions. See திரவியம். நாடோடி, appel. n. A vagrant, a vagabond, a stroller, நிலையற்றவன்; also நாடோடி யாய்த்திரிகிறவன். 2. [in comb.] Common to the country. நாடோடியாய்வழங்குகிறது. It is common. நாடோடிச்சொல்--நாடோடிப்பேச்சு, s. Words common in the country, provincial dialect, வழக்கச்சொல். நாடோடிப்பாஷை, s. The vernacular tongue, நாகரீகமற்றபாஷை. நாட்டமைதி, s. The settled state of a country, தேசத்தினமைவு. 2. Things promoting the prosperity of a state, in six particulars: 1. செல்வம், wealth; 2. விளை நிலம், corn-fields; 3. செங்கோல், a good government; 4. நோயின்மை, freedom from epidemics; 5. வளம், fruitfulness; 6. குறும் பின்மை, exemption from crime. (சது.) நாட்டவத்தனம், s. [prov.] Clownishness, rusticity, நாட்டுப்பாங்கு. நாட்டவன்--நாட்டான், s. A countryman, a clown. நாட்டாண்மை, s. [vul. நாட்டாமை.] Chieftaincy of a country, ஊராளுந்தன்மை. நாட்டாண்மைக்காரன், s. Chief of a country or village; a Natamagar. நாட்டாண்மைக்காரி, s. Wife of a Natamagar. 2. A proud forward woman. நாட்டாண்மைப்பண்ண, inf. To manage the office of a Natamagar. நாட்டார், s. [sing. நாட்டான்.] People of a country, தேய்த்தார். 2. Countrymen, rustics, நாட்டுப்புறத்தார். 3. Chief persons among the Vellala caste. நாட்டாள், s. [com. காட்டாள்.] A laborer, வேலைசெய்வோன். நாட்டாளுக்கொருநீட்டாளோ. Must a day laborer have a servent? நாட்டுக்கணக்கன், s. A village accountant. நாட்டுக்குற்றம், s. Things injurious to a country, pests, scourges, ஊருக்குள்ள தீங்கு.--One class is seven-fold: 1. தொட்டி யர், strolling jugglers, wizards, witches; 2. திருடர், thieves, robbers; 3. யானை, wild elephants; 4. பன்றி, wild hogs; 5. விட் டில், insects; 6. கிள்ளை, parrots; 7. பெரு மழை, excessive rain.--Another class is eight, fold: 1. விட்டில், locusts and insects; 2. தன்னரசு, anarchy; 3. வேற்ற ரசு, invasion by a foreign power; 4. யானை, elephants; 5. மிகுமழை, excessive rain; 6. மிகுகாற்று, high winds, tempests. 7. கிள்ளை, parrots; 8. நட்டம், dissipation or dancing. (சது.) நாட்டுச்சந்தம்--நாட்டுப்பாங்கு, s. Slovenly or rustic habits of dress, behavior or talk. நாட்டுச்சார்பு, s. Agricultural tracts, மருதநிலம். நாட்டுச்சிறப்பு, s. The excellencies, natural or artificial of a country, ஊர் வளம். நாட்டுப்புறம், s. Country parts. நாட்டுப்புறத்தார், s. [pl.] Rustics, unpolished persons. நாட்டுப்பெண், s. A daughter-in-law, மருமகள். (Tanjore usage.) நாட்டுப்போங்கு--நாட்டுவழக்கம், s. The style, fashion, and manners of a country, ஊர்க்கடுத்தவிதம். 2. Rusticity, coarseness, அவிவேகவாடிக்கை. நாட்டுமட்டம், s. A country pony not from Pegu. நாட்டுவர்த்தமானம், s. The news of the Mofussil. நாட்டுவளப்பம்--நாட்டுவளம், s. Fertility of country, நாட்டின்சீர். 2. Good order of a country, as to its inhabitants, the animals, &c. நாட்டுவெள்ளரி, s. The wild Cucumber, of native or spontaneous growth. 66)

pātakam (p. 310) s. [poet. பதகம்.] A grievous sin, a heinous crime, துரோகம். W. p. 524. PATAKA. Note. For the five பாதகம், or heinous sins, see பஞ்சபாதகம். Another classification is seven-fold, as given in சதுர கராதி, being apparently the venial sins of the Romanists; சித்தசமுன்னதி, or அகங்காரம், pride; 2.அருத்தலோபம், or உலோபம், avarice; 3. காமம், lust, lasciviousness; 4. வைஷம்மியம் or பகை, hatred, enmity; 5. அசனப்பிரியம், போசனப்பிரியம், gluttony; 6. கோபம் or காய்தல், anger, malice; 7.அனுஷ்டணம் or சோம்பல், idleness, laziness. பாதகத்துரோகி, s.
