iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. uraicu (p. 65) --உரைஞ்சு, கிறேன், உரை சினேன்--உரைஞ்சினேன், வேன், உரைச--உரைஞ் ச, (உரைஞ்சு, is a cor. of உரிஞ்சு,) v. n. To rub one's self against a thing, to rub as beasts against a post, &c., to chafe, உரிஞ. 2. To wear away by use--as the feet by walking, as a seat by sitting, &c., தேய. 3. v. a. To rub hard, scour, scrape, or scratch --as with the back of a nail, to brush, clean off, or waste away by rubbing, தேய்க்க. 4. To graze, gall, bruise by grazing, சீக்க. To produce mental pain--as by a sarcastic remark, &c., மனதிலுறுத்த.--Note. The meanings of this word are commonly determined by the noun prefixed to it, and it may generally be construed by the form to cause to be, &c. See எலும்புறுத்த, below. புரவிபண்ணுறுத்திடுவார். They equipped the horse. (நைட.) மருங்கினிற்கச்சியாப்புறுத்தான். He bound the girdle about his waist. (சேதுப்.) காலிலேகல்லுறுத்துகின்றது. The pebbles hurt my feet. உறுத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak so as to make an impression on the mind. 2. To speak with energy, earnestness, &c. எலும்புறுத்த, inf. To cause a smarting irritation--as the bones by being protruded. துன்புறுத்த, inf. To cause suffering. For many words compounded with this verb, such as கண்ணுறுத்த, பயமுறுத்த, மனமுறு த்த, வற்புறுத்த, &c., see in their respective places. 2)

Success, வாய்ப்பு. 11. [prov.] Stubble, தாளடி. ஒட்டிலேபட்டசிறுபட்சிபோலாகவேயுழல்கின்ற பேதைமனமே. Oh! my inconsiderate mind struggling for relief as a little bird entangled in a net. (சச்சி.) ஒட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To peep, to watch, to pry (hiding behind something), ஒளித்திருந்துபார்க்க. 2. To watch an opportunity, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டிட்டுக்கொள்ள, inf. To lay a wager, to lay down stakes, to make trial by. ஒட்டுக்கடுக்கன், s. A peculiar kind of earring worn alike by both sexes in some parts of the country, சிறு கடுக்கன். ஒட்டுச்செடி, s. A kind of amaranth whose seeds stick to the clothes, ஓர்செடி. ஒட்டுத்திண்ணை, s. A kind of step used for sitting on at the margin of the verandah running the whole length, seats running cross-wise at the ends of the verandah, சிறுதிண்ணை. ஓரொட்டு, adv. Altogether, by the lump. 2. To set in portions or small quantities. கூறுகூறாக்க, inf. To cut or separate into portions; to apportion. கூறுவைக்க, inf. To set in portions or separate quantities, to distribute and set in small heaps--as a retailer for sale. கூறுகொள்ள, inf. To stuff, cram, press any thing down with a stick, the feet or the hands. குழந்தை மண்ணைக் கூறுகொள்ளுகிறது. The child eats sand. சோற்றைகூறுகொள்ளுகிறான்.
