[vul., prop. அச்சுவினி.] The first constellation, or lunar asterism, of the Hindus; which, besides indicating both the horns in the ram's head, and by two stars the base of the greater triangle of the head, comprehends one in the left foot of Andromeda. It is depicted in the form of a horse's head, முதனாள். 45)

aṭuppu (p. 8) v. noun. Adhering, joining, சேர்கை; [ex அடு, approach.] 2. s. Hearth, fire place for cooking, as சுல்லி; [ex அடுக்கு, the fire place being made of three stones or pieces of dried clay to support the pots.] 3. The star B'harani, the second lunar asterism of the Hindus, பரணி. 4. Fear, அச்சம். அடுப்பங்கரை, s. The front of the hearth; ex அம், et கரை, margin. சூட்டடுப்பு, s. A moveable heating apparatus, chafing dish, &c. கிளையடுப்பு--கொடியடுப்பு, s. A side hearth. 17)

aṇṇm (p. 9) s. Palate, the upper part of the mouth, மேல்வாய். 2. The uvula or small rounded process which hangs from the soft palate at the posterior part of the mouth, உண்ணா.

atṭṭu (p. 10) கிறேன், அதட்டினேன், வேன், அதட்ட, v. a. To rebuke authoritatively and vehemently, கண்டிக்க. 2. To make a sudden or vehement noise to frighten beasts, &c., உரப்ப. 3. To rant, hector, bluster, upbraid, &c., in order to awe, or silence. உறுக்க. 4. (பிங்.) To attempt to refute one by sophistry and blustering, அமட்ட. அதட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To sound one's mind by menacing. அதட்டிமாடோட்டினான். Making a noise he drove away the beast. அதட்டல், v. noun. Reproving, &c. அதட்டு, v. noun. Rebuke, reproof, refutation, rant, hector, உறுக்கு. 18)

atītam (p. 11) s. Exaltedness, pre-eminence, that which excels or goes beyond, எட்டாதது. 2. That which is beyond reach, exceeding the power of human comprehension, கடந்தது. 3. An attribute of the Deity, கடவுளதோர்தன்மை. (p.) மனோவாக்குக்கதீதமாக. In an incomprehensible and ineflable manner. அதீதப்பிரமம், s. The Deity as beyond human comprehension. அதீதர், s. The celestials, வானோர். 2. Ascetics, wise men who by their austerities have obtained great eminence, முனிவர். அதீதாவஸ்தை, s. The state of the soul abstracted from sensible objects by meditation, insensibility, துரியாதீதம்.

The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. An important circumstance is the half rising of the sun, with which are connected the four other things abovementioned, ஓர்விசேடநாள். அத்தோதயஸ்நானம், s. appu (p. 18) கிறேன், அப்பினேன், வேன், அப்ப, v. a. To stick or clap on with the hand, as sandal paste, plaster, &c., or with a trowel, as mortar against a wall, சார்த்த. 2. To snatch at, as a dog, கௌவ. 3. To apply in a patting manner, as a lotion, a fomentation, ஒற்ற. 4. [prov.] To beat gently with the hands, as in washing muslin, கும்ம. நாய் அப்பிக்கொண்டுபோய்விட்டது. arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)
