cakalam (p. 153) s. All, the whole, entireness, universality, அனைத்து. W. p. 879. SAKALA. --Note. உம் is commonly suffixed to the word or to the noun that follows it. 2. [in the Agamas.] The state of souls subject to the three [மலம்]. evils, and to transmigrations. (See சகலர்.) 3. Consciousness, and consequent active operations, of the soul, either absolute or partial; being the second of the three அவத்தை. (See காரணசகலம்.) Obs. The five காரியசகலம் states, (imperfect consciousness of the living soul) are 1. சகலசாக்கிரம். 2. சகலசொப் பனம். 3. சகலசுழுத்தி. 4. சகலதுரியம். 5. சகலதுரியா தீதம். சகலத்திற்கும் நானிருக்கிறேன். caṉṉi (p. 173) s. Affection of the brain, apoplexy, paralysis, convulsions, delirium from fever, &c., சீதநோய்; [perhaps from the Sa. Sanipata, with its suffix apocopated.] --Note. In medical works, thirteen kinds of சன்னி are described. viz.: 1. கண்டகுப் சம், nervous affections of the throat, sore throat; [ex குப்சம், crookedness.] 2. சந்தி கம், (Union.) a disease arising from improper sexual intercourse. It is of two kinds. சுகசன்னி, of a man after bathing with the use of oil for anointing, and சூத கசன்னி, of a female during menstruation. 3. தாந்திரிகம், nervous debility. 4. பகீகனநேத்தி ரகம், affection of the nerves of the eye, blindness. 5. ருக்தாகம், pains of the body attended with thirst. 6. சிஃவீகம், nervous affection of the tongue, dumbness. 7. பிர லாபம், falling sickness, epilepsy. 8. அந்த கம், convulsion preceeding death. 9. ரக்த ஷடீவி, mucus mingled with blood from the nose. 1. சித்தவிப்பிரமம், fainting fits, syncope. 11. சீதகாத்திரகம் or சீதாங்கம், congestion of blood attended with spasms and profuse perspiration; spasmodic cholera. 12. கர்நீகம், nervous deafness. 13. அபின்னி யாசம், convulsion, distortions. சன்னிகுன்மம், s. Convulsive fits. (R.) சன்னிக்கட்டி, s. [prov.] A tumor near or in the ear, காதுவீக்கம். சன்னிக்குணம், s. The stage of a disease bordering upon that of coma, apoplexy, &c., 2. Symptoms, indications, &c., of coma, &c. (c.) சன்னிநரம்பு, s. Nerves of the great toe, which being injured are sometimes inflamed so as to produce lock-jaw. சன்னிநாயகம், s. A plant--black cumin, கருஞ்சீரகம். See சீரகம். 2. A medicinal plant, தும்பைப்பூண்டு. Phlomis Indic. L. சன்னிநாயன்--சன்னிகணாயன், s. (lit. god of fits.) As சன்னிநாயகம், 2. சன்னிபாதம், s. A morbid state of the three humors of the body resulting in paralysis, convulsions, &c.--as சன்னி. W. p. 891. SANNIPATA. சன்னிபாதசுரம், s. (also சன்னிவாதசுர ம்.) Convulsions accompanied with fever. சன்னிபிறக்குதல், v. noun. The inducing of coma. c. அலறுசன்னி, s. Convulsions accompanied with laughter, hysterics--as கம் பீரசன்னி. இரணசன்னி--புறவீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. External convulsions. இசிவுசன்னி, s. Lock-jaw. see underஇசி. v. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. cam (p. 163) s. Sanscrit suffix, generally to nouns of Sanscrit origin, denoting that which is born, generated, produced, &c. --as மலயசம், சராயுசம், அண்டசம், சுவேதசம், பங் கசம், வனசம், &c. W. p. 336. JA. 2. A Sanscrit prefix, implying: (1.) Junction, union, &c.--as சம்போகம், சம்பந்தம், சம்பாஷ ணை, &c. (2.) Completion, fullness, intensity, &c.--as சம்பூரணம், சங்கிருதம், சம்வற்சரம், சம்மூடம், &c. W. p. 893. SAM. 3. As a prefix, it sometimes denotes happiness, goodness, loveliness, &c.--as சங்கரன், சம்பன் னன், &c. 4. s. (சது.) Love, affection, அன்பு.

tāṉ (p. 236) The reciprocal pronoun, himself, herself, itself, the genitive being தன்; in composition sometimes தற். 2. One's self. 3. An emphatic or intensive particle, signifying indeed, really, certainly, தேற் றச்சொல்; as அப்படித்தான், it is so. (c.) 4. An expletive, or அசைச்சொல் suffixed to any noun or pronoun of any person, and declined instead of it, as நிலந்தனைக்கொத்தினான், he dug the earth. 5. Personal identity, சுயம். (p.)--Note. According to the Agamas, the soul is the person or being, and the body and mind with their powers and faculties, are merely adventitious; being the fruit of actions, &c. தானேவளர்ந்துதவத்தால்கொடியெடுத்தவன். One who has grown great and become famous of himself through meritorious austerities; often used of one who has risen by the kindness of another, but forgotten his benefactor. தானொருவனுமேதனியாகவந்தான். He only came, he came alone. தான்சாகாமருந்துதின்னலாமா. May any one take medicine to kill himself? தானுள்ளபோதுலோகம். The world is one's while he lives. தானாக்கனியாததுதடிகொண்டடித்தால்கனியுமா. Will a fruit, not ripening of itself, ripen by being beaten with a stick? தானுந்தலைவனும். The soul and God. நீதான். You yourself, you certainly. அவன்றன்னைக்கண்டேன். I saw him. (p.) அவன்றான். He himself; he certainly, truly, really. தானாக, inf. To be absolute, unique, self-existent, independent, தானாயிருக்க; applicable to the deity. 2. To be assimilated, தன்வண்ணமாக. தானாக, [adverbial.] Of his, her, or its own accord; spontaneously, voluntarily. 2. Of or by himself, herself, itself. தானாக்குதல், v. noun. Assimilating a person or thing to one's self, itself, &c., தன்வண்ணமாக்குதல். தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language, from other authors, one of thirty-two உத்தி. தானேயானவன்--தான்தோன்றி, appel. n. The self-existent, the deity, கடவுள். தான்பிழைக்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To regard or consult one's own safety, to be careful not to betray, involve or jeopardize one's self. 2. To seek one's own interests, livelihood, prosperity. 23)

tām (p. 234) (pl. of தான்.) They, themselves. 2. [in usage the 2d. per. sing. honorific.] You, your honor, &c., முன்னிலைச்சொல். 3. A சாரியை or emphatic particle suffixed to plural pronouns of any person, as அவர் தாம்வந்தார், he came. 4. An அசைநிலை, expletive, வருவர்தாம், they will come, they will indeed come. 5. One of the syllable sung to tunes instead of words. (See தா ளம், and சுரம்.)--Note. As a சாரியை, it is an affix to nouns, and, in the oblique cases, it takes the change of case instead of the noun. 11)

tirayam (p. 239) s. Three. It is suffixed to words from Sanscrit, as குணத்திரயம், three qualities. W. p. 387. TRAYA. திரயாங்கம், s. The three members of a calendar, திரயாங்கம். திரராசிகம், s. tōṟu (p. 264) . A distributive plural suffix, which with உம் subjoined signifies, each; every, &c., பன்மைஇடைச்சொல்; இடங்கள்தோ றும், in each place, here and there; வருஷந் தோறும், annually; வாரந்தோறும், weekly; தினம் தோறும், daily. 67)

piḷḷai (p. 318) s. Child, infant, male or female offspring, குழந்தை. 2. Son, சுதன். 3. Youth, a lad, இளைஞன். 4. A title suffixed to the name of males in some families of the Vellalar caste, also a respectful appellative given to any male of this class, and sometimes to others, ஓர்பட்டப்பெயர். 5. The young of animals living on the branches of trees, as the monkey, &c., கோட்டில்வாழ் விலங்கின்பிள்ளை. 6. The young of the swine, deer, cat, hare, &c., பன்றி, மான், பூனை, முயலி வற்றின்குட்டி. 7. The young of the அன்றில் bird. 8. [sometimes.] The young of birds in general, பறவைக்குஞ்சுகளின்பொது. 9. The young of a cocoa-nut, தென்னம்பிள்ளை. 1. The setting, or planting, of any tree, நாற்று. 11. An affix to the names of some birds and animals, as அணிற்பிள்ளை, கீரிப்பிள்ளை, கிளிப் பிள்ளை. 12. [usage.] A small black bird, கரிக்குருவி. 13. The mainate, நாகணவாய். 14. The god Bhairava, வைரவன்; [ex பிள், bursting, as the amnios at birth or பீள்.] (சது.) பிள்ளையவர்கள்வருகிறார்கள். The master is coming--used by the Vellalas. பிள்ளைக்கு விளையாட்டு சுண்டெலிக்குச்சீவன்போ கிறது. It is play to the child, but death to the mouse. பிள்ளாயெனல், v. noun. Speaking kindly to a junior. ஏன்பிள்ளாய். Well, child! ஆண்பிள்ளை, s. A male child; a man, &c. See ஆண். பெண்பிள்ளை, s. A female child; a woman. See பெண். பிள்ளைக்கரைத்தல், v. noun. Procuring abortion. பிள்ளைகொல்லி, appel. n. Infanticide. 2. A disease fatal to infants, ஓர்நோய். 3. A kind of assaf&oe;tida, ஓர்பெருங்காயம். பிள்ளைக்கட்டி, s. The f&oe;tus in the early stages of pregnancy. பிள்ளைக்கவி, s. A species of poetic composition. See பிள்ளைத்தமிழ். பிள்ளைக்கற்றாழை, s. A common species of கற்றாழை, used medicinally, being always green. பிள்ளைக்கிணறு, s. A small well or hole sunk within a well. பிள்ளைக்கைவளை, s. Bracelets worn by children பிள்ளைக்கோட்டை. s. A small fort, forming an entrance to the larger, சிறு கோட்டை. 2. A citadel. பிள்ளைச்சோமன், s. A small சோமன் cloth for a boy or girl. பிள்ளைத்தக்காளி, s. A shrub. See தக் காளி. பிள்ளைத்தமிழ், s. A poem celebrating the different stages in the infancy and childhood of a hero, comprized in ten parts: 1. காப்பு, putting on the armrings, with magical rites; 2. செங்கீரை, first voluntary movements of the child compared to the motion of herbs by the breeze; 3. தால், lulling the child in the cradle with songs; 4. சப்பாணி, the first clapping of its hands; 5. முத்தம், kissing; 6. வாரானை, extending its hands and calling to be taken; 7. அம்புலி, showing the moon to the infant; 8. சிறுபறை, amusement of a small drum; 9. சிற்றில், making (in play) little houses, or trampling on those made by girls; 1. சிறுதேர். drawing little carriages.--Note. When a heroine is described, instead of the last three, the following are substituted, eighth கழங்கு, a kind of play with brass balls; ninth அம்மானை, a curious play with balls; tenth, ஊசல், swinging. There are two more compositions, bearing this title, one by குமரகுருபரதேசிகர், in praise of மீனாட்சி, the goddess at Madura; the other, by மார்க்கசகாயதேவர், of the childhood of Skanda. பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. A pregnant woman. பிள்ளைத்தேங்காய், s. The best kind of cocoa-nut, reserved for planting, நாற்றுத் தேங்காய். (Jaff.) பிள்ளைத்தேள், s. A centiped; Scolopendra, as மட்டைத்தேள். பிள்ளைப்பிறை, s. The youthful moon, இளஞ்சந்திரன். (p.) பிள்ளைப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of insect, the Gryllus, உழுவான், which going into mud is not defiled--so the spiritual man. பிள்ளைபெற, inf. To bring forth a child. பிள்ளைபெறாதமலடி, s. A barren woman, used of one who is cruel. பிள்ளைப்பெற்றவீடு, s. The house of a lying-in-woman, considered ceremoniously unclean. பிள்ளைப்பேறு, v. noun. Child-birth. பிள்ளைப்பேறறிந்தவள், s. A midwife. பிள்ளையைமஞ்சணீர்குடிக்கிறது, v. noun. Drinking turmeric water; i. e. adopting a child. பிள்ளைமாபிரபு, s. [prov.] A nobleman, an eminent person, பெருமையிற்சிறந்தோன். பிள்ளைமார், s. [pl.] Respectable men, gentlemen; men of the பிள்ளை caste. பிள்ளைமை, s. Childishness, puerility, babyhood, any thing infantile, பிள்ளைத்தன் மை. பிள்ளையாண்டான், appel. n. A young man, a youth, boy, lad, வாலிபன். பிள்ளையார், s. The god Ganesa, sometimes, Skanda and Sambanda Mûrti. பிள்ளையார்சதுர்த்தி, s. A fast on the fourth day of the new or full moon in honor of the god Ganesa. பிள்ளையார்சுழி, s. A curve to represent பிள்ளையார். See சுழி. பிள்ளையுண்டாகுதல், v. noun. Becoming pregnant. பிள்ளைவங்கு, s. [prov.] A cavity or socket to receive the mast of a dhoney, பாய்மரம்நிறுத்தும்குழி. பிள்ளைவண்டு, s. A young beetle, இள வண்டு. பிள்ளைவிழுதல், v. noun. [vul.] Miscarrying, கருவழிதல். ஊத்தாம்பிள்ளை, s.
