āṭi (p. 38) s. The month of July, கர்க் கடகமாதம். (c.) 2. (p.) The twenty-first lunar asterism, உத்திராடநாள். 3. Mirror, கண்ணாடி. ஆடிக்கரு, s. Dark clouds in July regarded as indicative of plentiful rains in the ensuing monsoons. ஆடிக்கருவழிந்தால் மழைகுறைந்துபோம். If the teeming clouds in July discharge their contents, the rains will fail in the ensuing season. ஆடிக்கழைக்க, inf. To take away or separate the newly married woman from her husband, and to put her under her parents during the month of July of their first year of marriage. This separation is indispensable to prevent conception in that month, and delivery in the coming April, which is believed to bring ruin upon the family. ஆடிப்பண்டிகை, s. The first day of July (ஆடி.) a day of feasting, mutual visits, &c., when the sun is supposed to enter on its southern course. ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, s. A festival held on the day when the Cavery over-flows in July. 8)

oppāri (p. 82) s. Comparison, similarity, likeness, ஒத்தபாவனை. 2. A funeral elegy, lamentation or episode sung by women and abounding with comparisons between the deceased and other objects, அ ழுகையிலொப்பனையிடுகை. மக்களே போல்வர்கயவர்அவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்க ண்டதில். The base among men are formed like others, we see no two classes of beings that so much resemble each other. (குறள்.) ஒப்பாரிகொள்ளுதல்--ஒப்பாரிபிடி த்தல், v. noun. Esteeming one as a near relation because of his resemblance to a deceased member of the family. ஒப்பாரிக்காரன், s. One so esteemed. ஒப்பாரிசொல்ல, inf. To sing a funeral elegy for a deceased relative. ஒப்பாரியிட்டழ, inf. To sing an elegy with wailing.--Note. This is frequently done with great pathos and the intensity of feeling is heightened by numerous references to the beauty and excellency of the deceased--as உன்பல் லழகின்பாவனையைப் பார்த்தநமன்விடானே, the regent of the dead, fascinated by the beauty of thy teeth, would not pass thee over. 15)

A prong, barb, tooth, tine, spike, ஆயுதத்தின்பல். 12. Ingredients for magical preparations employed to fascinate, injure or destroy a person, viz.: plants, roots, skins, bones, flesh, &c., அட்டகருமக்கரு. 13. Immature egg in a fowl, முட்டை. கருக்கட்ட--கருப்பிடிக்க, inf. To form a mould. கருக்கரைய, inf. To suffer abortion. கருக்காய், s. Young and immature fruit, பிஞ்சுநெல். (குறள்). 2. Thin and immature grains in corn ears, பதர். கருக்குழி, s. The womb, the uterus, கருப்பாசயம். கருக்கூட, inf. To impregnate. கருக்கூடு, s. The ovary, that part of the body in which impregnation is performed. கருக்கூட்ட, inf. To form plans, to scheme, contrive, plan, யோசனைசெய்ய. கருக்கொள்ள--கருப்பற்ற, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated, to fecundate--as brutes of vegetables, to fill-as clouds with water, கருப்பங்கொள்ள. கருக்கொண்டமேகம், s. A teeming cloud. கருத்தங்க, inf. To be conceived, to be formed--as conception, கருப்பந்தங்க. கருத்தரிக்க, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated--as animals in general. கருத்தெரியாதவன், s. An unwise man. கருநூல், s. A treatise on enchantment. கருப்பை, s. The matrix, the womb. கருப்பொருள், s. The second class of பொருள், which treats of the beings, things, &c., peculiar to different countries. They are of fourteen kinds from gods down to the employments of men, அந்தந்தநிலங்களைச்சார்ந்தபொருள். See பொருள். கருமாரி, s. Extremity, difficulty in child-birth, பிரசூதவேதனை. கருமாரிப்பட்டை, s. A bark used medicinally in difficult child-birth. கருவழிக்க, inf. To destroy the f&oe;tus, to cause abortion, கருப்பமழிக்க. கருவழிய, inf. To perish--as the f&oe;tus, to miscarry, to suffer abortion. கருவழிவு, v. noun. miscarriage, abortion, கருப்பஅழிவு. கருவறிய, inf. To come to years of discretion. கருவறிந்தவன்--கருவாளி--கருவு ள்ளவன், s. An ingenious person, a genius, ஊகித்தறிபவன். கருவறுக்க, inf. To exterminate a family, &c., to ruin one's property,அடி யோடுகெடுக்க. கருவாமுப்பு, s. Salt-petre, வெடி யுப்பு. கருவிரிய, inf. To ear, to shoot into ears, கதிர்விரிய. கருவிரிந்தபயிர், s. The earing corn. கருவுயிர்க்க, v. n. To bring forth young either human or brute, ஈன. கருவுளமைப்பு, s. The six things incident to sentient beings on assuming corporeal forms, கருவில்நியமிப்பு, viz.: 1. பெறுதல் or பேறு, getting, gain. 2. இழத்தல் or இழவு, losing or loss. 3. இன் பம், pleasure. 4. பிணி or இடையூறு, disease, affliction, mishap, &c. 5. மூப்பு, old age. 6. சாக்காடு, death. To these some add பிரித்தல், separation, removal to a distance; and பிரிவிலாதிருக்கை, continued association. கருவெடுக்க, inf. To take ingredients for witchcraft, மாந்திரீகத்துக்குக்கருவெ டுக்க. வெள்ளைக்கரு, s. The white of an egg. மஞ்சட்கரு, s. The yolk of an egg. 122)

pāl (p. 313) s. Milk, பசுவின் பால்முதலியன. 2. Milky juice in plants, trees and fruits--as the eocoa-nut, மரமுதலியவற்றின்பால். 3. Lymph, matter, fluid in pustules, &c., அம்மைப்பால். 4. (சது.) Whiteness, வெண்மை. [a contraction of Sa. Palana, milk of a cow recently calved.]--Note. In combination the final ல் is changed by rule to ற், sometimes to ன், பாலுக்குங்காவல்பூனைக்குந்தோழன். A guard to the milk, but a friend to the cat. பாலும்வெள்ளைமோரும்வெள்ளை. Milk is white, whey is white--spoken of persons or things apparently similar, but really very different. பால்வார்த்துமுழுகுவான். He will bathe, putting milk on his head (in token of his joy at your death, &c.). பாலடை, s. A shell for a milk-ladle, பாலடைச்சங்கு. [loc.] 2. A shrub, பால டைச்செடி, Hallia sororia. பாலடைய, inf. As பால்கொள்ள. பாலவரை, s. A whitish species of pulse. See அவரை. பாலாடை--பாலேடு, s. Cream of milk. பாலாறு, s. The river Palar. பாலிறங்குதல்--பால்வடிதல், v. noun. Pustule becoming dry. 2. The flowing down of milk. பாலுண்ணி, s. A kind of wart. See உண்ணி. பாலுமறுகுந்தப்பித்தோய, inf. [prov.] To bathe after putting milk and sacrificial grass on the head--as a bride and bridegroom before marriage, before marriage, to obtain progeny. பாலும்பழமும்கொடுக்க, inf. To give milk and plantains as done by a bride and bridegroom to each other, after the marriage ceremony. (c.) பாலுறட்டி, s. [prov.] A kind of pastry, made with cocoa-nut milk. பாலூட்டி, inf. To suckle a child. பாலொலிக்க, inf. [prov.] To keep back milk as a cow for its calf. பால்கட்ட--பால்வைக்க, inf. To innoculate, to vaccinate. பால்குடிக்க, inf. To suck milk as a babe. 2. To take milk. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. பால்குடிமறந்தபிள்ளை, A wanted child. பாலனும்பால்குடியான் Even the suckling ceases to suck--a phrase expressive of fear from oppression. பால்கொள்ள, inf. To form a milky consistence, as in young kernels, or pustules. பால்சுரக்குதல், v. noun. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்சொரிதல், v. noun. Flowing out of milk. As பால்கொள்ள. பால்பிடிபதம், s. The stage of grain when they newly formed kernels are of a milky consistency. பால்பிழிய, inf. To press out cocoa-nut milk. பால்பெயர்தல், inf. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்பொழிய, inf. To give milk freely, as cows, &c. 2. (fig.) To be prosperous. பால்மடி, s. An udder teeming with milk. பால்மணம், s. Smell of milk. 2. A milk-man. பாற்காரி, s. A woman who sells milk. 2. A wet nurse. பாற்காவடி, s. Milk, carried with ceremony under a canopy to be presented to an idol. This is commonly done at the Palney festivals. See காவடி. பாற்குழந்தை, s. A sucking child. பாற்குழம்பு, s. Milk, thickened from being well boiled. பாற்கெண்டை, s. A fish, as பால்மீன். பாற்கொவ்வை, s. A species of கொவ் வை, with white flower. பாற்சுண்டு, s. Sediment of milk adhering to a vessel by boiling in it from day to day. 2. See சுண்டு. பாற்சுறா, s. A whitish kind of சுறா fish. பாற்சொறி, s. Scabbiness from want of milk. பாற்சோட்டை, s. [prov.] Desire after milk as an infant. பாற்சோறு, s. Boiled rice and milk. பாற்பல், s. Milk-teeth, white teeth. பாற்பள்ளயம், s.
