akkkṭvuḷ (p. 1) s. God, as inhabiting the soul, உயிர்க்குள்ளிறைவன். 2. The soul as God, the divinity within, ஆன்மா. --Note. Other derivatives from அகம் will be found under that word. 13)

akngkārm (p. 1) s. Pride, self-consequence, கருவம். 2. One of the four intellectual powers, the energy which excites to action, அந்தக்கரணங்களிலொன்று. (See இந்தி ரியம்.) 3. Self-consciousness, individuality, regarding one's self as performing actions instead of the deity as operating within, நானெனுஞ்செருக்கு. 4. (p.) An operating cause of transmigration, பிறவிக்குமூலம்; ex அகம் myself, et காரம் that which acts. அகங்காரகிரந்தி--அகங்காரக்கிரந்தி, s. The bond of the three evil principles, மும்மலம், which bind the soul from eternity, and subject it to births. (p.) அகங்காரத்திரயம், s. The three அ கங்காரம், viz. முக்கியவகங்காரம், முக்கியாமுக்கி யவகங்காரம், and அமுக்கியவகங்காரம். (p.) அகங்காரி, s. A proud person. 16)

akaṇitam (p. 1) s. [priv. அ et கணிதம்.] Innumerable quantity, கணக்கின்மை. 2. Mental calculation, counting differently from the usual mode, மனக்கணிதம்; (p.)-Note. The words beginning with அ and having a negative sense are generally formed in the same manner. அகணித பஞ்சாங்கம், s. An almanac made by mental calculation. 26) *

akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. The rule for relating an action, event, &c., to which belong the following:-- 1. செய்பவன், who. 2. செய்தொழில், what. 3. கருவிகள், by what helps. 4. பயன், why. 5. இடம் or நிலம், where. 6. காலம், when. 7. திறன், in what manner or how. 11. முன்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling events from signs. 12. பின்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling the consequences of any action. (p.) 17)

akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். akammiyai (p. 2) s. A harlot, concubine, பொதுமகள். (p.) அகம்மியாகமனம், s. Committing adultery; ex அகம்மியா, et கமனம், going. அகம்மியாகமனம் பண்ண, inf. To commit adultery. அகம்மியாகமனம் பண்ணுகிறவன். He who commits lewdness. 31) *

akarttā (p. 2) s. [priv. அ et கர்த்தா, maker.] One not a creator, one without action, செய்கையற்றவன். (p.) அகர்த்தத்தவம், s. Not creating, but having power to continue the order prescribed at the creation--one of the three prerogatives of the Supreme Being. 35) *

akẕu (p. 2) -அகழ், கிறேன், அகழ்ந்தேன், வேன், அகழ, v. a. To dig out, excavate a well or ditch, form a hole as a rat, &c., தோண்ட. 2. To dig, turn up the earth, plough, உழ. (p.) அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்குநிலம்போல, &c. [குறள்.] as the ground which supports the ploughmen. அகழான்--அகழெலி, s. A large kind of field-rat. அகழானெடுத்தல், s. v. Burrowing and casting out the earth, as rats. 49)

akai (p. 3) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To break as a stick, ஒடிக் க. 2. To break with violence, முரிக்க. 3. To beat, அடிக்க. 4. To cause to go, to drive a carriage, &c. செலுத்த. 5. A kind of play in writing, arranging letters in a fanciful manner, மிறைக்கவியி லொன்று. அக்கரவிலக்கணம்--அட்சரலட்ச ணம், s. The properties, forms, names, powers, &c. of letters, orthography. 2. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், ex இலக் கணம். அக்கராரம்பம்--அட்சராரம்பம், s. Beginning to teach a child the letters of the alphabet, with appropriate ceremonies, on the fifth year. 46) *

akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

akkiṉipū (p. 4) s. [ex அக்கினி et பூ blossom.] Skanda, who led the celestial armies against the Asuras. Siva having cast his seed into the flame for the purpose of generating a warrior able to subdue Daruka one of the chief Asuras, Skanda was produced. In the Skanda Purana, where his wars are described at large, his birth is given differently, அக்கினிசன்மன். 20)
