A wife shackles the feet, and a child stops the mouth; i. e. a married man with a family can neither go, nor eat as he pleases. அவன்என்கட்டுக்குள்ளேநிற்கிறஆளல்ல. He is not subject to my influence--he does not listen to my advice, &c. கட்டழகு, s. Great beauty, பேரழ கு. 2. Ornament, அலங்காரம். கட்டழல், s. A vehement fire. கட்டாடி, s. [prov.] A person temporarily possessed for the purpose of uttering oracles or கட்டு, a species of divination inferior to சன்னதம், குறிசொல்வோ ன். 2. A washerman in respect, considered as a diviner; many of this caste having been celebrated in this character, வண்ணான். 3. A chief of the washer tribe, வண்ணார்தலைவன். கட்டாண்மை, s. Bravery, superior heroism, intrepidity, பேராண்மை. கட்டிரதம்--கட்டுத்தேர், s. A car constructed for a particular occasion made anew every year. கட்டிளமை, s. Tender age, being very young. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A young lad. கட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. To exceed the limits, banks, &c.; violate established rules, positive injunctions, &c. கட்டுக்கடங்காதது, appel. n. That which is unrestrainable, unmanageable, ungovernable. கட்டுக்கட்ட, s. To tie up a pack, &c., மூட்டைகட்ட. 2. To fabricate, invent a fiction, a slander, பொய்க்கதைகட்ட. 3. To tie cloths to a boil in applying medicine, பருவுக்குமருந்துகட்ட. கட்டுக்கதை--கட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fable, a fiction, mythological tales. கட்டுக்கரப்பான், s. Eruption on a child. கட்டுக்கலியாணம், s. [prov.] A wedding, marriage ceremony, &c., festival--from the bridegroom's tying the marriage symbol on the bride's neck. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman, she who wears the தாலி, மங்கலமங் கை. கட்டுக்காரன், s. [prov.] (fem. கட் டுக்காரி.) A diviner, a conjurer, குறிசொல் வோன். கட்டுக்காவல், s. A very strict guard, close custody--applied to the protection of girls arrived at the age of puberty, &c., great care, great strictness, கட்டானகாவல். கட்டுங்காவலுமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in close confinement. கட்டுக்கிடை--கட்டுக்கிடையன், s. Cloth or other goods lying long unsold, நாட்பட்டசரக்கு. கட்டுக்குத்தகை, s. A contract or lease of land for many years together, a contract for a whole dhoney without reference to the number of trips, the weight of the cargo, &c. கட்டுக்கூட்டு, s. One who has been frequently bound. கட்டுத்தளர, inf. To grow slack --as a tie; to be loose--as a bale, &c. கட்டுத்தறி, s. A post to which an elephant may be tied, யானைமுதலியன கட்டுங்கம்பம். கட்டுத்திரவியம், s. [prov.] Treasure bound up in one's cloth, &c., பொற்கிழி. கட்டுத்திரள, inf. [prop. கட்டிதிர ள.] To form or swell--as a tumor. கட்டுத்தையல், s. A kind of firm sewing. கட்டுத்தோணி--கட்டுப்படகு, s. A dhoney or vessel of which the seams are sewed together. கட்டுப்பட, inf. To yield to, to submit, be influenced by, be brought under the power of, be overcome by, கட் டுக்குள்ளடங்க. 2. To be bound by spells or otherwise restrained, மந்திரமுதலியவற் றாற்கட்டுப்பட. 3. To be constipated--as the system; to be obstructed--as waters, as humors in the system, blood, urine, menstruation, &c., தடைப்பட. ஒருமயிரினாலேகட்டுப்படுவான். He may be bound by a single hair; i. e. he will be easily persuaded or prevailed upon. கட்டுப்படுத்த, inf. To restrain, confine, subdue, subordinate, control, restrict, subject, கட்டுக்குளடக்க. கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To stop, prevent. கட்டுப்பாடு, s. Mutual obedience or harmony--as among relations, பந்துக் கட்டு. 2. Self-restraint, thraldom, கட்டுப் படுகை. 3. League, band, conspiracy, faction, confederacy, கட்சி. 4. To ascertain the origin and cure of a disease by a magical exercise--a sort of divination. கட்டுப்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] Ornaments for the body, jewels, ஆபரணம். கட்டுப்பெட்டி, s. [vul.] A stiff basket braided with ratan, olas, &c., fastened by tying, for holding clothes, &c. கட்டுப்பேச்சு--கட்டுவார்த்தை--க ட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fabricated story, fiction, வீண்கதை. கட்டுமட்டு, s. A mango fruit which, when it matures, is protected with a case. எட்டியிலேகட்டுமரம்பழமுண்டாமோ. Will the bitter poisonous எட்டி tree produce mangos? கட்டுமுகனை, s. [prov.] Authority, custody, trust, அதிகாரம். 2. management, direction, administration, supervision, superintendence, மேல்விசாரணை. 3. Economy, frugality, husbandry, சிக்கனம். 4. An avowal, a solemn declaration, undoubted truth, infallible expression, உறுதிச்சொல். 2. A pithy or sententious expression, a proverb, பழ மொழி. 3. To burst out and flow--as water by making a breach in an embankment. கட்டுவேலை, s. A fabric, a structure, building. கட்டோசை, s. A tremendous noise, a loud report, பேரொலி. கட்டோடே, adv. [vul.] Wholly, entirely--used with words implying rejection, destruction, &c., or with negatives. கட்டோடேயழிந்துபோயிற்று. It is utterly ruined. என்னிடத்திலேகட்டோடேயில்லை. Virginity, virgin age, கன்னித்தன்மை. கன்னிபுதன், s. Mercury in the sign virgo indicating learning in one born under its influence. கன்னிப்பருவம், s. The age of mature virginity. கன்னிப்பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. [prov.] A woman in her first pregnancy. கன்னிமதில், s. Imperishable fortress walls. கன்னிமார், s. Virgins, deified females who were pious virgins on earth, afterward born in deified forms, in the supernal worlds in some one of the three lower states of bliss, கன்னியர். கன்னிமையழித்தல்--கன்னியழித் தல், s. The crime of deflouring a virgin. 2. The guilt of suffering a virgin to be defloured. கன்னிமையழிய--கன்னியழிய, inf. To lose virginity, to be be defloured, கன்னிமைகெட. கன்னியழியாதபெண், s. A girl that has not lost her virginity. கா, A syllabic letter, the consonant க் and long vowel, ஆ, ஓரெழுத்து. 2. s. A pole with ropes attached on the shoulder, for carrying common burdens, or gifts to a temple, &c., காவடி. (c.) 3. (p.) A pole for carrying burdens, காவடித்தண்டு. காமரம், s. [prov.] A pole for carrying on the shoulder, the one used for heavy timber, காவடித்தண்டு. கற்பகக்கா, s. Indra's paradise. திருவானைக்கா, s. kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. As a demon watching gold; i. e. an act of no value to any one. காத்திருக்க, inf. To wait, wait for, expect, watch for, look for. கன்னியாகுமரி, s. The கன்னி river. 2. The name of the daughter of Bharata, to whose share the southern division of Bharatavarsha or India fell, and from whom the southern extremity of the peninsula was called Cape Comorin or Kumari, பரதன்மகள். 5. To become deranged--as one's business or circumstances. நியமங்குலைய, inf. To be diverted from a vow or some religious observance. நிலைகுலைய, inf. To fail in one's standing; to be ruined in one's circumstances. 2. To be discouraged; to lose self-command. 3. To be disconcerted, perplexed. 4. To be routed--as an army. 5. To swerve from duty. 6. To be fascinated. முனைகுலைய, inf. To be dispirited, discouraged--as a warrior; to be defeated --as an army. மானங்குலைய, inf. To be disgraced. 2. To be deflowered, to be ravished. மகிமைகுலைய, inf. To lose one's dignity, credit or honor. உருக்குலைய, inf. To be disfigured, to be worn out--as things by use or time. 2. To be emaciated. 3. To be putrefied --as a corpse. வேஷங்குலைய, inf. Unique, matchless. unparalled, ஒப்பில்லாத. 4. Unlike, without an equal, one of the pair--the other being wanting, ஒற்றையான. 5. Independent, absolute, entire, சுவாதீனமான. 6. Pure, simple, unadulterated, unalloyed, genuine, கலப் பில்லாத. 7. Deserted, forsaken, forlorn, helpless, ஏதுமற்ற. --Note. க், ச், த், ப், are doubled after தனி. (c.) தனிக்கடவுள், s. Absolute deity, the matchless deity. தனிக்காட்டுராசா, s. A sole sovereign in a jungle. (c.) தனிக்காப்பு, s. An invocation, comprized in a single verse. தனிக்குடி, s. (also ஒன்றிக்குடி.) A solitary family. 2. One family of a caste, living among other castes. 3. Keeping house separately, as distinguished from living under the paternal roof. தனிக்குடை, s. The umbrella of an autocrat; (fig.) absolute sovereignty, தனியாசாட்சி. தனிக்குடைநிழற்ற. To spread the imperial umbrella, to govern. (p.) தனிக்குறில்--தனிக்குற்றெழுத்து, s. A single short consonant. தனிக்கோலான், s. He whose government is incomparable, the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. An independent sovereign. (p.) தனிச்சமையல், v. noun. Cooking for a single person, for one's self only, &c., தனிச்செய்கை, v. noun. Cultivating land alone, not jointly with others. தனிச்சொல், s. (Bab. Gram. p. 8.) A detached foot in வெண்பா and other verse, between two lines, தனிச்சீர். 2. A single or uncombined word. தனித்தனியே, adv. Individually, separately, each one singly, each alone. --Note. The ஏ is often added whether தனி be repeated or not--as தனியே. தனித்தாட்டன், s. [prov.] A large monkey that keeps distinct from, or goes before, the drove. தனித்தியலிடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. A specific name, including many individuals, or some varieties. தனித்தேட்டம், s. Amassing wealth alone, without the burden of a family. தனிநிலை, s. Solitariness, தனி்துநிற் கை. 2. (in gram.] The letter ஃ, ஆய்த வெழுத்்து. தனிப்பட, inf. [adverbially.] To be alone, to be left alone, to be forseken. 2. To be solitary. 3. To be kept alone as witnesses and prisoners, or apart, detached--as persons, or animals. (c.) தனிப்படச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I will tell you in secret. தனிப்பட்டு, s. A single or distinct fold, plait, strand or string, one out of several folds of a necklace. 2. (c.) Silk only, all silk. தனிப்பயணம், s. Travelling alone, as தனிவழி. தனிப்பன்றி, s. A wild boar alone, as more ferocious and dangerous than others. தனிப்பாடு, v. noun. Loneliness, solitude. தனிமை. 2. Bearing the whole labor, responsibility, &c., alone, முழப் பொறுப்பு. (c.) தனிப்பாட்டு, s. A single verse unconnected with a series, விடுபாட்டு. தனிப்பால், s. Pure, unadulterated milk. (c.) தனிப்புரக்க, inf. To reign alone, to be an autocrat, தனியரசாள. (p.) தனிப்புறம், s. A solitary place, or state. (c.) தனிப்பூடு, s. An onion, or other bulbous root not divided. தனிப்பெற, inf. [adverbially.] To be alone, to be placed alone, apart, distinct, insulated. (c.) தனிப்பெறஎடுத்துக்கொண்டான். He took the whole to himself. தனிப்போர், s. A single combat. 2. [in card playing.] One of the players, winning all the cards, கடிதமாடுவோரிலொரு வர்வெல்லுகை. 3. [in trade.] An individual monopolizing all the profits, தன்வசமாக்குகை. தனிமுதல், s. Trading alone, with one's own capital. 2. (p.) The matchless and only God, absolute deity, கட வுள். தனிமொழி, s. A simple uncompounded word. தனியரசாட்சி, s. Universal sovereignty. தனியன்--தனியான், s. A single man or woman, one unmarried, living alone; a wild beast detached from the herd, and thus rendered ferocious, ஒன்றி. 2. A solitary animal tree, fruit, &c., த னித்தது. 3. As தனிப்பாட்டு. தனியிருக்க--தனியேயிருக்க, inf. To be alone, to be alone at home. தனியுவமம், s. Using a word in a figurative sense, as கன்னெஞ்சு, a stony heart. தனியெழுத்து, s. Terminating of the guilt of brahmanicide. பிரமகபாலம், s. The skull of the upper of fifth head of Brahma, plucked off by Siva, in the form of Bhairava, for pride; and worn by Siva as a part of his garland, or carried in his hand when begging, பிரமன்றலைஓடு. பிரமகற்பம், s. The age of Brahma. See கற்பம். பிரமகன்னிகை, s. A female of the Brahman caste, பிராமணப்பெண். 2. Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமகாதகன், s. Murderer of a brahman, பிராமணக்கொலைபாதகன். பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The sacred incantation repeated by the brahmans, in their daily worship. See under காயத்திரி. பிரமகிரந்தி, s. Tying together, two stems of sacrificial grass in representation of the sexual union of Siva and Sakti, in the pujah or worship of the கிரி யைக்காரன், ஓர்முடிச்சு; [ex கிரந்தி, knot.] பிரமகுலம், s. The Brahman caste. பிரமகைவர்த்தம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, in which the sun is regarded as the Supreme Being. See புராணம். (சது.) --The description in the Sans. Dict. is different. பிரமக்கியானம், s. As பிரமஞானம். பிரமக்கியானி, s. See பிரமஞானி. பிரமசடங்கம், s. Touching six members of the body, while repeating the five lettered incantation appropriated to the five faces of Siva, as representing the five operative dcities, ஆறங்கத்தோடு செய்யுஞ்செபம். பிரமசரியம்--பிரமசாரித்துவம், s. The order, condition or religious practice of the Brahmachari or religious unmarried student, நான்கு நிலையினொன்று. பிரமசரியமனுட்டிக்க, inf. To commence the practice of a religious student, commonly about the sixteenth year. பிரமசாபாலம், s. One of the thirty-two Upanishads, உபநிடதமுப்பத்திரண்டினொன்று. பிரமசாரி, s. The religious bachelorstudent, the first of the four orders prescribed for the brahmanical tribe. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. Bishma, a son of king சந்தனு. பிரமசாரிசந்நியாசி, s. One who passes from the student to the ascetic or fourth order, without passing through the intermediate stages, பிரமசரியத்தினின்றுஞ்சன் னியாசியாச்சிரமத்திற்புகுந்தோன். பிரமசித்தி, s. Success, in acquiring a knowledge of the deity. பிரமசூத்திரம், s. A thread or cord consisting of three threads worn by brahmans, புரிநூல். 2. The name of a treatise, ஓர்நூல். பிரமசைதன்னியம், s. The original or first cause, God, கடவுள். பிரமஞானம், s. Experimental knowledge of the deity. 2. Regarding every thing as god. பிரமஞானி, s. One who has made great attainments in the knowledge of God, so as to become one with Him, பரமஞானி. பிரமதண்டம், s. A stick to support the chin, used by brahmans, in meditation. பிரமதண்டு, s. A stick used by devotees or yogis, யோகதண்டம். 2. See பிரமம், giddiness. பிரமதத்துவம், s. True knowledge of the Supreme deity, மெய்ஞ்ஞானம். பிரமதாயம், s. What is allowed to brahmans, or held free by them. பிரமதானம்--பிரமஸ்தானம், s. The inmost recess in a temple where the chief idol is placed, as கர்ப்பக்கிரகம். பிரமதேவன், s. The god Brahma, the Creator or Evolver of worlds. பிரமத்துவம், s. The divine nature, கட வுட்டன்மை. பிரமநிருவாணம், s. Union with the deity, கடவுளுடனொன்றுகை. பிரமபதம்--பிரமபதவி, s. The world of Brahma, an inferior state of bliss. பிரமபுத்திரம், s. The river, Brahmaputra, ஓர்நதி. பிரமபுத்திரி, s. The Sarasvati river, சரஸ்வதியாறு. 2. The goddess Sarasvati, சரஸ்வதி. பிரமபுரம், s. Seehali, a town in Southern India on the northern bank of the Cavery, சீகாழி. பிரமபுராணம், s. Puranas which teach that Brahma is the chief deity. In the celebrated eighteen there are two of this class. the பிரமம், and the பதுமம். (சது.) பிரமப்பிரளயம், s. The deluge at the end of the life of Brahma, பிரமனாயுள்முடி வில்வரும்பிரளயம். பிரமமணம், s. One of the eight modes of marriage. See மணம். பிரமமுனி--பிரமரிஷி, s. A Rishi of the Brahman caste, as most of them are. பிரமமூலி, s. A medicinal plant. See பிரமி. பிரமயாகம், s. One of the five யாகம், எச்சமைந்தினொன்று. பிரமயோனி, s. The birth, origin, or extraction of a brahman, பிராமணப்பிறப்பு. பிரமரட்சு, s. A savage man of a monstrous size, பருத்தமுருடன். பிரமரந்திரம், s. The tender part of the crown of the head where the bone is not formed in infancy, and through which it is said the soul of a yogi departs when he chooses to die, உச்சித்துவாரம். பிரமராட்சதன், s. A goblin or savage animated by the soul of a brahman, who in a former birth died with unexpiated sin. பிரமராட்சதி-பிரமராட்சதை, s. The ghost of a brahmani who having died a violent death appears in the form of a demon, inhabiting trees and possessing all the knowledge previously obtained, பார்ப் பாரப்பெண்பேய். பிரமலிபி, s. The writing of Brahma in the forehead of all persons before birth; fate, destiny. See தலைஎழுத்து. பிரமலிபிதப்பாது. The writing of Brahma will not fail. பிரமலோகம், s. The world and heaven of Brahma, being the seventh and highest of the seven upper worlds, also called சத்தியலோகம். (சது.) பிரமவமிசம், s. Lineage in succession from Brahma. 2. The race of brahmans, பிராமணசாதி. பிரமவாதம், s. The religious tenets of the Vedas considered systematically, வேதமதம். பிரமவித்து, s. One of the four grades of those who pursue a true and perfect knowledge of the deity, நால்வகைமுத்தரி லொருவன். பிரமவிந்து--பிரமபிந்து. s. The seed, or progeny of a brahman, &c., பிராமணவிந்து. 2. One of the thirty-two Upanishads. See உபநிடதம். பிரமனாள், s. The fourth lunar asterism, உரோகிணி. (சது.) பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்--பிரமா, s. Brahma of the Triad, as creator, progenitor or evolver of worlds and creatures, நான்முகன். பிரமன்றந்தை, s. Vishnu as father of Brahma, விஷ்ணு. பிரமாஞ்சலி, s. A form of worship in which the two hands are joined, and placed at the breast. பிரமாட்சரம், s. A letter which is the origin of all letters, and the prime root of all prayers and incantations, மூலவெ ழுத்து. பிரமாண்டம், s. The system of worlds, as created by Brahma, உலகம். 2. One of the eighteen Puranas, பதினெண்புரா ணத்தொன்று. 3. [fig.] That which is large, gigantic, huge, colossal, காத்திரம். (usage.) பிரமாண்டநாயகன், s. Lord of the universe, கடவுள். 2. An epithet used in praise, or compliment, சக்கரவர்த்தி. பிரமாத்திரம்--பிரமாஸ்திரம், s. A famous arrow of supernatural qualities, given by Brahma to some, who had practised extraordinary austerities. பிரமாந்தரம், s. Certain parts of the body regarded as stations of the soul, உயிர்நிலை. பிரமாயு, s. The age of Brahma, as பிர மகற்பம்; [ex ஆயு.] பிரமாயுதம், s. A number, one million, பத்திலட்சம்.
