akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

Wils. p. 71. ARDD'HANARISHA. அத்தமண்டபம், s. The court in a temple next to the sacred shrine. See கருப்பகிரகமண்டபம். அத்தாதுரம், s. Desire for wealth, covetousness, பொருளாசை. அத்தோதயம்--அர்த்தோதயம், s. The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. An important circumstance is the half rising of the sun, with which are connected the four other things abovementioned, ஓர்விசேடநாள். அத்தோதயஸ்நானம், s. A medicine, a medicament that restores to life, a cordial, ஓர்மருந்து. 6. Final emancipation of the soul or eternal felicity according to Hindu philosophy, முத்தி. 7. A person with harsh words and good disposition. அமுதசருக்கரை, s. A medicinal sugar prepared from the சீந்தில் root or stem. அமுததாரணை, s. The nectarine principle in the head or brain from which the silent, motionless devotee is supposed to obtain nutrition, support and enjoyment, when living without external food. அமுதபுட்பம், s. A creeping plant, சிறுகுறிஞ்சா, Periploca, L. அமுதப்பார்வை, s. A favorable or propitious look. as of a lady towards her admirer, குளிர்ந்தபார்வை. அமதமேந்தல், v. noun. Giving food to ascetics and other virtuous persons, guests, as one of the nine kinds of புண்ணியம், and of the sixteen உபசாரம். அமுதயோகம், s. [in astrology.] The auspicious conjunction of a certain day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. See யோகம். அமுதர், s. Celestials, வானோர். 2. Herdsmen, இடையர். (p.) அமுதவல்லி, s. A creeper, as சீந்தில். அமுதவெழுத்து, s. Letters deemed propitious and proper to begin a poem, or to be in other important places. They are the vowels, அ, இ, உ, எ, and the consonants, க், ச், த், ந், ப், ம், வ், or all the letters but the நஞ்செழுத்து. அமுதாசனர், s. The gods, as அ மிர்தாசனர். 26)

arcu (p. 22) s. Royalty, government, இ ராசாங்கம். 2. A king, இராசா. 3. A kingdom, the territory of a sovereign, இராச் சியம். 4. The planet Jupiter, வியாழம். (p.) அரசடைந்தான். He is come to the throne, he has obtained the kingdom. அரசங்கம், s. The six safe-guards of royalty; viz.: படை, குடி, கூழ், அம ச்சு, நட்பு, அரண். அரசளிக்க, inf. To govern. அரசாள, inf. To reign, govern. அரசாட்சி, v. noun. Reign, government, the exercise of government, the right of possession to the throne, இராசரிகம். அரசியல், s. Royalty, இராசாங்கம். 2. The duties or functions of a king, இராசரிகமுறைமை. They are six; viz.: அறநி லையறம், மறநிலையறம், அறநிலைப்பொருள், மறநிலைப் பொருள், அறநிலையின்பம், மறநிலையின்பம். அரசிருக்கை, s. The place of a king, or throne. அரசிறை, s. The king's tribute. அரசுசெய்ய, inf. To exercise the functions of government, govern, reign.

aruttōtayam (p. 25) s. A rare planetary conjunction in the month of January supposed by the Hindus to be very auspicious for bathing, அத்தோதயம்; which see. 24) *

aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். He has learnt all perfectly. எழுத்தறவாசி. Read with distinct articulation. அறக்கட்ட, inf. To tie tightly, இறுகக்கட்ட. 2. To monopolize, ஒருமிக்கக் கொள்ள. அறக்காய, inf. To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. A headless body, கவந்தம். அறுந்தருணம், s. Emergency, exigency. அறுந்தொகை, s. A sum, number, &c. in dividing, in which there is no remainder. அறுவாய், s. The parting made in sawing a piece of timber. 2. The opening of a cut or wound. 3. A junction, a conjunction of two periods of time, extremity, end. 4. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

āṇai (p. 38) s. Oath, as in a court of justice, &c., சத்தியம். 2. Oath, as in profane swearing, வீண்சபதம். 3. Truth, மெய். 4. Conjuration, adjuration, obstructing a procedure by oath; checking by oath a beast ready to fall on one, or a law proceeding; an appeal by oath to a superior--as to the deity, the king, &c., obstructing or hindering--as the water from flowing over one's land, &c., கட்டு. 5. [Sans. Akgna.] An exercise of sovereign power and authority, a command, jurisdiction, mandate, order, an injunction, edict, ஆக்கினை. 6. The sign or insignia of authority--as the sceptre, national colors, the seal, the stamp, the badge of office, the impress on the coin, &c., அடையாளம். 7. Conquest, victory, வெற்றி. 8. Rules, injunctions, usages, &c. established by the learned of old, சான்றோர்கட்டளை. கண்ணாணை. By my eyes. அப்பாணை. I swear by my father. உன்தகப்பனாணை. I conjure you by your father. உன்னாணை. By thee. ஆணைசெலுத்த, inf. To sway the sceptre, exercise the functions of government. ஆணைச்சக்கரம், s. Sceptre. 2. (fig.) Royal power. ஆணைமீற, inf. To disregard conjuration or interdiction. ஆணையிட, inf. To take an oath, swear. 2. To adjure one. ஆணைவழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Subjection to the king--one of the ten good qualities or virtues of the liberal. ஆணைவிட, inf. To release from an oath. 25)

āl (p. 43) . The chief form of the third case, or instrumental ablative--implying cause, agency, instrumentality, expressing by, by means of, with, by way of, in consequence of, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, usually annexed to the finite verb, also to nouns, அசைச்சொல். 3. A form of the subjunctive, joined to the gerund, or in poetry, to the finite verb, expressing if, வினையெச்சவிகுதி. 4. An optative termination expressing may, let, &c., வியங்கோள் விகுதி. 5. A negative form of the optative--as அழால், don't weep. 6. A form of affirmation, for yes, ஆமெனல். This definition, though given in Saturagarady and Negundu, is not proved by examples. 7. A form of the third case, expressing each, every, distributively. (p.) நீவந்தால். If you come. நாடாமால். It is a country, or one's native land. ஊராலொருதேவகுலம். A temple in every country. மரீஇ யதோரால். May you know--or know --know you what has happened. வாளால்வெட்டினான். He cut with a sword. அரசனாலாகியமனை. A house built by the king. 6)

icai (p. 45) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To join, unite, blend, mingle, இணைய. 2. To agree, suit, be adapted to, to accord with, பொருந்த. 3. To combine, harmonize, to accord in sound, இராக ஓசையொ வ்வ. 4. To consent, assent, comply, உடன் பட. 5. To be matched, be like, to pair, become fellows, சரிப்பட. இசையாதாயினும். Though it (the action) may appear unsuitable. (நீதிநெறி.) இசையாவொருபொருள். A thing that cannot be given, got, &c. (நாலடி.) இசைந்தவேளை, s. Due time. இசை, v. noun. Closeness, கூடி நிற்கை. (சது.) 2. Union, agreement, இசைவு. இசைவு, v. noun. Union, agreement, compactness, fitness, unity, harmony, a joining, joint, connection, combination, fitting in, consent, compliance, correspondence, பொருத்தம். அதற்கிசைவாய். Corresponding to it. கின்னரி யோசைக்குமுன் குரலுக்குமிசைவில்லை. There is no harmony or concord between the lute and your voice. இசைவுகேடு, s. [imp. இசைகேடு.] Disunion, disjunction, disagreement, பொ ருத்தமின்மை. 2. Disappointment, want of success, abortiveness, காரியத்தவறு. இசைகேடாய்ப்போனகாரியம். An abortive contrivance, an unsuccessful thing. இசைவுபிறழ்வு, s. [vul. இசகுபிச கு.] Disorder, ஒழுங்கின்மை. 2. Disagreement, இசைவுகேடு. இசைவுபிறழ்வானநாள். An unfavorable, unfair, or unpropitious day. 40)

icai (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To join, combine, reconcile, blend, mingle, சேர்க்க. 2. To bind, tie, fasten, கட் ட. 3. To hum, chant, continue a musical sound, பாட. 4. To say, tell, speak, declare, பேச. 5. (fig.) To give, bestow, yield, produce, ஈய. (பிங்கலந்தை) 6. v. n. To sound as musical instruments, ஒலிக்க. (p.) நரம்பிசைக்குந்துழனியார்ப்ப. Fitness, suitableness, acceptableness, பொருத்தம். 3. Adjustment, correction, amendment, திருத்தம். இணக்கமறிந்திணங்கு. Make friendship with the worthy. நல்லிணக்கமல்லதல்லற்படுத்தும். Alliance with the unworthy will cause mutual pain. இணக்கப்படுத்த, inf. To bring about a reconciliation between two parties. இணக்கம்பேச, inf. To try to reconcile two parties. இணக்கோலை, s. A deed of cession, agreement, reconciliation, உடம்படி க்கைப்பத்திரம். 126)

iṇai (p. 45) s. Union, conjunction, communion, fellowship, இசைவு. 2. Comparison, parallel, similitude, resemblance, ஒப்பு. 3. (p.) Two things of a kind, a pair, couple, brace, துணை. 4. A companion, associate, partner, escort, protector, துணைவன். 5. Desire, இச்சை. 6. Women's hair, கூந்தல். இணையினெஞ்சமே. O! mind, debased beyond comparison. (வைராக்.) இறைகழலிணைமேவியவிமலர். Holy men who unite themselves to the feet of the Supreme Being. இணைக்கயல், s. A couple of carpfish, figures of which in gold, silver, &c., form one of the eight auspicious articles placed on special occasions as good omens, also as pleasing to the gods, அட் டமங்கலத்தொன்று. 2. One of the emblems of royalty, அரசசின்னத்தொன்று. இணைக்கல்லை, s. Two leaf-plates --as set before a religious mendicant or pandarum, while feeding him. இணைக்குப்போக, inf. [prop. இணை யாகப்போக.] To walk with another, to walk abreast. இணைக்குறளாசிரியப்பா, s. A kind of ஆசிரியப்பா, some of whose middle lines are shorter than the first or last line. இணைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting either of the kind of verses called வெண்பா and அகவல், or வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, in hundred verses and composed in accordance with the rule of அந்தாதி--one of the பிரபந்தம். இணைமுரண்டொடை, s. [in poetry.] A kind of ryhme where the first two feet in a line are opposed to each other either in word or meaning, ஓர்தொடை-as சீறடிப்பேரகலல்குல். இணைமோனைத்தொடை, s. A species of rhyme in which the first letters of each of the first two feet are the same. See தொடை. இணையசை, s. A compound metrical syllable, நிரையசை. இணையடி or கழலிணை, s. The two feet. இணையடிசூட, inf. To adorn, crown one's self with the feet (of the deity or guru) regarding them as flowers.--Note. To place the feet of another on one's head, is a figurative form for expressing great reverence, devotedness, respect, &c. இணையளபெடைத்தொடை, s. A verse in which the first letter of the first two feet is protracted. இணையிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To compare one thing with another. இணையியைபுத்தொடை, s. The repetition of the same letter in the last two feet of any line. See தொடை. இணையெதுகைத்தொடை, s. [in poetry.] The rhyming of the second letters of the first two feet in each line. இணையெழுத்து, s.
