A large building or room for public purposes, a house, a hall, a theatre, &c., சபைகூடுமிடம். 4. A royal palace, அரமனை. 5. A hermitage, or place where austerities are practised, தவச்சாலை. 6. An alms-house, or place where benevolent acts are performed, அறத்தின்சாலை. 7. A stable, குதிரைச்சாலை. --Note. The word takes its meaning as a place, or road from that with which it is combined. சாலைக்கரை, s. The vicinity or border of a road. சாலைப்பாதை--சாலைமார்க்கம், s. A road with shade-trees on each side. சாலைவைக்க, inf. To make an avenue. கல்விச்சாலை, s. A school-house, a place for learning. See கல்வி. கூட்டச்சாலை, s. A public road shaded with thick trees. சிறைச்சாலை, s. A prison, a jail. பண்டசாலை, s. A store house for grain, &c. See பண்டம். ஆயுதசாலை, s. An arsenal, an armory. யாகசாலை, s.
