akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3.
