iyamaṉ (p. 48) s. Yama the god of death, regent of the south, and king of hell, (நரகம்.) the place of his capital, in which he sits in judgment on departed souls, sending the good to Swerga and the wicked to Naraka. In the latter there are 28,, divisions appropriated to different classes, according to their respective demerits. He is figuratively described as devouring souls for food. He takes the buffalo for his vehicle; and for weapons, the battle-axe, club and cord, நமன்; [ex யம, to stop, restrain.] Wils. p. 681. YAMA. 2. uṭai (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To break a vessel, &c.; to burst, break open, break a bank, &c.; to break lumps, clods, &c.; to break a boil, a blister, the skull or any other flat, solid or massive substance; to split, fracture, தகர்க்க. 2. To break the ranks of an enemy, to defeat, discomfit, disperse, rout, put to flight, இரிக்க. 3. To ruin, impoverish one, கெடுக்க. 4. To untwist, untwine, முறுக்கவிழ்க்க. 5. v. n. To break--as a boil, கட்டியுடைக்க.-Note. உடைய and உடைக்க are not applicable to the breaking of a tree, a branch, an arm or any other long and cylindrical body that is broken off short or asunder. For this meaning see முரிக்க, ஒடிக்க, &c. தண்ணீருடைத்துப்பாய்கிறது. The water has broken (the dam) and flows out. பல்லுடைப்பேனென்றான். He said, I will break your teeth. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. To burst an embankment--as water. பெண்மையுடைக்கும்படை, s. The weapon that dissolves female continency. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To take much pains, mentally--as in abstruse calculations, intricate business. உடைப்பு, v. noun. A breaking, a breach, the bursting of a bank, உடை க்கை. 2. s. To aid, render assistance. சமயத்திற்கேற்றஉதவி, s. Seasonable aid. சமயத்திற்செய்தஉதவி, s. Aid rendered in season. தெய்வஉதவி, s. Divine aid. கைக்குதவி, s. Help to the hand --as a staff, a weapon, an instrument, another to assist in labor, to lean upon, &c. கையுதவி, s. Help by hand, help of an inferior kind and temporary--as of a servant or person at hand. ஊருதவி, s. The help of one's countrymen. உயிருதவி, s. The aid given by which a person is rescued in a fatal juncture. 2. Help rendered by giving up life for another. பேருதவி, s. Great help. போருதவி, s. Weapons, army, &c., auxiliary to a war. 2. Succor rendered to a war. அயலுதவி, s. The help of neighbors. சொல்லுதவி, s. Help by word, recommendation. ஆளுதவி, s.
