Stubble, கதிரறுத்ததாள். அரிநெல்லி, s. A tree yielding a sour fruit, sometimes called country gooseberry. ஓர்மரம், Cicca disticha, L., so called from its sulcated fruit, which appears as if it had been carved out with a knife. அரிவாள், s. A sickle, reaping hook, கொய்யுமாயுதம். 2. A saw, ஈர்வாள். அரிவாட்சொண்டன்--அரிவாண் மூக்கன், s. [prov.] A kind of sea-bird, one of the heron-species, ஓர்கொக்கு. அரிவாள்மணை, s. An instrument, like a knife, fastened to a plank for cutting in pieces, fish, meat, &c., கறிகுறைக் குங்கருவி. கருக்கரிவாள், s. A jagged sickle. வெட்டரிவாள், s. An art supposed to be acquired by the power of incantations and magical medicaments--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். ஆகாசகருடன்--ஆகாயகருடன், s. A water plant, Pistia stratiotes, the roots of which float in the water, அந்தரத்தாமரை. 2. (fig.) An aerial or sky-lotus; i. e. a fanciful or ideal thing, absurdity, impossibility, பொய். ஆகாசபட்சி, s. The sky-lark, சா தகப்புள். ஆகாசமண்டலம், s. The aerial regions, வானமண்டலம். Wils. p. 13. AKASHAMANDALA. 2. A kind of dancing, ஓர்கூத்து. ஆகாசமயம், s. Emptiness, that which is void of substance. ஆகாசமார்க்கம், s. The aerial way as passed by gods, by the planets, and other heavenly bodies regarded as gods; and by men who by austerities, incantations, magical rites, &c. have acquired superhuman powers. ஆகாசவல்லி, s. iḷku (p. 55) கிறது, இளகினது, ம், இளக, v. n. [prov.] To relax, abate, become pliable, flexible, to lessen in intensity or severity--as wind, rain, sun-shine, fever, &c., தணிய. 2. To become tender, indulgent, mild, yielding, placable, to relax in ardor, application, &c., நெகிழ. 3. To grow moist --as goods, &c. in rainy weather, to soften--as heated iron or other metals, to dissolve a little, be reduced in hardness, &c., to deliquesce, soak through--as tiles, கரைய. 4. To become relaxed--as a bowstring, to become loose--as screws, &c., தளர. இளகாதவன், s. A hard-hearted, inexorable person. இளகிக்காண, inf. To become limber, soft, loose, pliant, lubricous, &c., நெகிழ. 2. To appear less strict, rigid, &c.--as the mind; to become less tense. இளகினபொன், s. Soft or pure gold that easily melts, &c., the prefix is alike applicable to other metals. இளகினமனசு, s. A feeling, kind heart. 49)

eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. Taking up, தூக் குகை. 2. Weighing, நிறுக்குந்தொழில். 3. A weight, நிறையளவு. 4. Assumption, adoption, ஏற்றுக்கொள்கை. 5. [ex எடுப்பு, to rouse.] Rousing from sleep, &c., எழுப் புகை. ēẕai (p. 79) s. A poor, indigent person, a poor wretch, an object of pity, one that is helpless, &c., வறியன். 2. An ignorant person, one of weak intellects, and pitiable. அறிவிலான். 3. Simple, harmless, inoffensive person. பேதை. 4. A woman, பெண். The use of this word often shows pity in the speaker. ஏழைபேச்சுஅம்பலத்துக்கேறுமா. Will the entreaties of the poor be taken up in the assembly of the great? ஏழையழுத கண்ணீர் கூரியவாளொக்கும். The tears of the poor resemble sharp swords. ஏழைக்குறும்பு, s. Deceitful purposes concealed under the guise of poverty. ஏழைச்சனங்கள், s. Poor people. ஏழைத்தனம்--ஏழைத்தன்மை, s. Want of power, pusillanimity, a poor, pitiable state, எளிமை. ஏழைஎளியவர்கள், s. Poor, miserable people. ஏழைமை--ஏழமை, s. Ignorance, simplicity, அறியாமை. 2. Timidity, pusillanimity, want of fortitude and energy, powerlessness, cowardice, effeminacy, பேதமை. 3. Poverty, wretchedness, வறுமை. தோழனோடுமேழைமைபேசேல். Disclose not your defects even to your friend. ஏழைமைகாட்ட, inf. To be timid, fearful, yielding, effeminate, cowardly. 2. To pretend to be poor, to feign poverty. ஏழைமைத்தனம், s. Lowliness, meanness, poverty. ஏழைமைப்புத்தி, s. Ignorance, foolishness, want of discretion, prudence, &c., அறியாமையுள்ளபுத்தி. 75) *

oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. To supply a word, &c., understood or wanting to complete the sense. இதனையெல்லாவிடங்களிலுமொட்டிக்கொள்க... Apply this word in every similar instance. ஒட்டித்தப்பியிருக்க, inf. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. Distant relationship--as regards title to inheritance, சொற்பசம்பந்தம். ஒட்டுப்பற்றில்லாமற்போயிற்று. All friendship has ceased between us. ஒட்டுப்பற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Totally extinct, quite out, utterly exhausted. ஒட்டுத்தையல், s. Botching, mending, patching. ஒட்டுநர்--ஒட்டினர், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. kñcā (p. 86) s. A medicinal plant, yielding leaves of narcotic and intoxicating qualities much used by smokers, ஓர்செடி, Cannabis sativa. 2. Any thing intoxicating, கள். (திவா.) கஞ்சாக்குடுக்கை, s. A debtor, கடன் பட்டவன். 2. sometimes a creditor, கடன் கொடுத்தவன். கடன்கேட்க, inf. To demand a debt. 2. To ask for a loan of money. கடன்கொடுத்தவன், s. A creditor, a loaner. கடன்சீட்டு--கடன்பத்திரம்--க டன்முறி, (s.) A bond of debt. கடன்செய்ய, inf. To do one's duty, கடமைசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, பிதிர்கருமஞ்செய்ய. கடன்திருநாள், s. A holy festival observed in fulfilment of a vow. (Besch.) கடன்பட, inf. To contract debt, be indebted, கடனுக்குள்ளாக. கடன்பற்ற, inf. To recover payment of a debt, கடனறவிட. கடன்வாங்க, inf. Rough, uneven ground. 2. Hard, clayey soil. கரட்டுத்தாளகம்--கரட்டரிதாரம், s. A strong arsenic, one of the kinds of orpiment, ஓரரிதாரம். கரட்டுக்கரட்டெனல், v. noun. Being hoarse, rough-as the throat before death. கரட்டோணான், s. A rough kind of lizard, a blood-sucker. 66)

The தான்றிமரம்-A tree yielding a nut much used in medicines, it is said in நைடதம் that Kali, the god of the iron age, once concealed himself in the fruit of this tree, Terminalia bellerica.
