There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. An art supposed to be acquired by the power of incantations and magical medicaments--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். ஆகாசகருடன்--ஆகாயகருடன், s. A creeper, கொல்லங்கோவை, Bryonia epigea. ஆகாசகரை--ஆகாசக்கரைக்கட்டு-ஆகாசபாலம், s. A fancy, chimera, deception, மனோராச்சியம். ஆகாசகாமி--ஆகாயகாமி, s. One of the three kinds of horses--that which has power to walk through the air. ஆகாசக்கத்தரி--ஆகாயக்கத்தரி-ஆகாயவழுதுணை, s. A plant yielding an edible fruit, Hibiscus longifolius, L. ஆகாசக்கல் s. An atom from the airy regions which it is supposed strikes the eye, which does not recover till the same hour next day, ஆகாசத்திற் பறக்குமணு. ஆகாசத்தாமரை, s. A water plant, Pistia stratiotes, the roots of which float in the water, அந்தரத்தாமரை. 2. (fig.) An aerial or sky-lotus; i. e. a fanciful or ideal thing, absurdity, impossibility, பொய். ஆகாசபட்சி, s. The sky-lark, சா தகப்புள். ஆகாசமண்டலம், s. The aerial regions, வானமண்டலம். Wils. p. 13. AKASHAMANDALA. 2. A kind of dancing, ஓர்கூத்து. ஆகாசமயம், s. Emptiness, that which is void of substance. ஆகாசமார்க்கம், s. The aerial way as passed by gods, by the planets, and other heavenly bodies regarded as gods; and by men who by austerities, incantations, magical rites, &c. have acquired superhuman powers. ஆகாசவல்லி, s. A running plant, ஓர்கொடி, Menyanthes cristata. (Roxb.) ஆகாசவாசிகள், s. The inhabitants of the ethereal regions, ஓர்தேவ கணம்--One of the eighteen கணம். ஆகாசவாணி--ஆகாயவாணி, s. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. An impossibility, an absurdity, இல்லாதபொருள். இல்பொருளுவமம்--இல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. ovvu (p. 84) கிறது, ஒவ்வினது, ம், ஒவ்வ, v. n. To agree, to be congruous, consistent, to be fit, பொருந்த. ஒவ்வாக்கூட்டிலுந்தனிமையழகு. Solitude is preferable to bad society. ஒவ்வாப்பேச்சுவசையோடொக்கும். An unmerited eulogy is tantamount to a censure. ஒவ்வாப்பக்கம், s. [in logic.] An unnatural comparison or simile, an incongruity or impossibility, பொருந்தாத பட்சம். ஒவ்வாமை, neg. v. noun. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. A cleft or chasm in a rock or mountain. மலைமுழைஞ்சு. கல்லறுக்க, inf. To make bricks, commonly, கல்லரிய. கல்லறை, s. A vault, a cave hewn out in a rock, sepulchre, a tomb, பிரேதக் குழி. 2. A cavern, குகை. 3. A room with a mortar or stone roof and floor, கல்வீடு. கல்லாங்காசு, s. A small round tile with which children play. கல்லாசாரி, s. A master-mason, an architect, கற்றச்சரின்தலைவன். கல்லிலேநாருரிக்க, inf. To strip fibres from a stone; i. e. to seek for what is unattainable or impossible--an absurdity. 2. To obtain by very great labor. கல்லிழைக்க, inf. To set precious stones, கற்பதிக்க. கல்லீயம், s. A hard kind of lead, pewter, வன்மையானஈயம். கல்லுக்காரர், s. Lapidaries, இரத் தினம்விற்போர். கல்லுக்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To frustrate a business by accusations or underhand representation, காரியத்தைத்தடைசெய்ய. கல்லுதிரி, s. To frustrate a business by accusations or under-hand representations, காரியத்தைத்தடை செய்ய. கல்லுயர்தோள், s. A mountain-like shoulder. கல்லுரல், s. A stone-mortar, கல் லினாற்செய்யப்பட்டவுரல். கல்லுவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To cast anchor. (See கல்லுப்போட.) 2. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with incantations, &c., விஷக்கல்வைக்க. 3. To set a stone on the forehead as a punishment, the head being bent backward, and the face set toward the sun, நெற்றியிற் கல்லுவைக்க. 4. To crect a stone at a funeral ceremony (a சாச்சடங்கு, personifying a deceased ancestor, whose spirit is supposed to enter and remain in it while the ceremonies are performed. A deification of the soul is supposed to take place and the stone is made an object of worship, சிலைதாபிக்க. கல்லுவைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with enchantment, incantations, &c. கல்லுளி, s. A stone-cutter's chisel, கல்வெட்டுமுளி. கல்லுளிச்சித்தர், s. A sort of mendicants who carry chains in their hands. கல்லுளித்தச்சன், s. A stone-cutter. கல்லுளியுருக்கு, s. Steel of a very hard kind used for cutting stone. கல்லூசி, s. A medicinal stone. கல்லூற்று, s. A spring in a rocky soil, in wells, கல்லூறுநீரூற்று. கல்லூற்றுத்தண்ணீர், s. Water springing from a rock. கல்லெடுப்பு, v. noun. The bearing of a funeral stone. கல்லெரிப்பு--கல்லெரிப்புமேகம், s. Incontinence of urine, நீர்ச்சுருக்குநோய். (Mat. Ind.) கல்லெறி, v. noun. The throwing of a stone, கல்லெறிகை. 2. s. The distance of a stone's throw, கல்லெறிதூரம். 3. A sling, கவண். கல்லெறிய, inf. To throw or fling a stone, to pelt with stones. கல்லெறிதூரம், s. The distance of a stone's throw. கல்லைநீராக்கி, s. A kind of ore, மாமிசபேதி. கல்லொட்டி, s. A snail, நத்தை, (M. Dic.) கல்வீடு, s. A stone of brick-built house. கல்வெட்டி, s. A stone-cutter, a lapidary. கல்வெட்டுபவன். கல்வெட்டு, s. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. A mixture of tin and iron. இரும்பும்வெள்ளீயமுங்கலந்தது. 2. [prov.] Hard inferior silver mixed with much alloy. கல்வேதி, s. A kind of ore, சகஸ் ரபேதி. கற்கட்ட, inf. To build with stones or bricks without cement, to wall a well, &c., கல்லாற்கட்ட. 2. To set stones, enchase, கற்பதிக்க. கற்கட்டுமோதிரம், s. A ring set with a stone. கற்கண்டு, s. Sugar-candy. கற்கருசிலை, s. A plant. கற்கனல், s. A kind of native arsenic. கற்காந்தம், s. A kind of loadstone. கற்காமி, s. The same as அல்மதம். கற்காரம், s. Lapis infernalis, காரக் கல். கற்காவி, s. PAKSHA.--Note. பக்கம், [in logic.] A twofold relation:--1. புறப்பக்கம், or புறுத்துப்பக்கம், an inference regarding exterior or secular matters; 2. உட்பக்கம், or அகப்பக்கம், connected with mental or religious truths. Each of these is applicable to two species of comparison; 1. நிகர்பக்கம், துல்லியபக்கம், ஒப்பாம்பக் கம், or சபக்கம், proper comparison, or deduction from analogy; thus for புறப்பக்கம், there is smoke, therefore there is fire; and for உட்பக்கம், regarding moral actions, originated in the mind; analogy refers them to maya, மாயை, as their basis. The agreement between this doctrine and the experience of a person, is ground of rational deduction. 2. நிகராப்பக்கம், ஒவ்வாதபக் கம், or விபக்கம், improper comparison, involving incongruity, absurdity, impossibility; thus for புறப்பக்கம், to say 'there is fire in water' is an absurdity in affairs of common life; for உட்பக்கம், to say that the basis of Siva's knowledge is மாயை, is an absurdity. In spiritual things the mental faculties, as well as the senses, are referred to மா யை, as their basis, and medium of acquiring knowledge. The சூக்கும body, the immediate source of consciousness, is referred to the same principle; and when the soul is liberated from births these are resolved into their original principles. பக்கத்திலேவாங்கிக்கொள்ளுதல். Borrowing in the neighborhood, or of others besides the persons in question. அவர்பக்கத்துக்காரியகாரன். He is his agent. எனக்குப்பக்கத்திலேஇரு. Sit be me. பக்கக்கிரகணம், s.
