A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. To become broken--as a vessel; to crack, burst, break in pieces, split, to be fractured--as the skull, &c.; to break with force suddenly, to break or burst open--as a bank or shore; to break open--as a letter or seal, &c.; to be broken--as the skin; to be hurt--as by a wound, தகர. 2. To become broken--as the ranks of an army, to be discomfited, to retreat before the foe, இரிய. 3. This word is often joined to verbals or verbal roots to form new verbs, and the infinitive and other parts are used adverbially to express intensity, entireness, &c.--as குழுற்றது, it surrounded; ஊடுறச்சென் றது, it pierced, or penetrated. உறச்சிவந்தது. It is become very red. உறவளைக்கும்வில். A bow bent to the utmost. சுகமுறுநித்திரை. Refreshing sleep. கிலேசமுற்றேன். I became sorrowful. விருப்பமுற்றேன். I have conceived a desire. இன்பமுற்றேன். I said, I have treated on--a formal or dignified mode of expression among authors. மீகீழிதழுறப்பம்மப்பிறக்கும். The letters ப் and ம் are produced by the contact of the upper and lower lips. (நன்.) முந்தினார்பின்னுறக்கடுகவோடினான். He ran so swiftly that all who started before him were left behind. உறவற்ற, inf. To dry up entirely. உறுந்தருணம்--உறுந்தறுவாய், s. Emergency, exigency, particular juncture. உறுவதுகூறல், v. noun. Giving an indirect answer to a question, எண்வகை விடையிலொன்று. உற்ற, rel. part. Uncommonly devoted, trusty. உற்றசெய்தி, s. True report, true news. உற்றது, appel. n. The thing as it is, the whole of it. உற்றதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak the truth. உற்றதுசொல்லஅற்றதுபொருந்தும். By telling the truth, misunderstandings are adjusted; truth is the surest resource through life. உற்றபண்புரைப்போர், s. Messengers, தூதர். (p.) உற்றமனிதன், s. A fit or proper person to transact an affair, one who can be trusted. உற்றவன், s. A friend, a relation, உறவோன். உற்றவிசேஷம், s. A proper or suitable expression. உற்றளவு, s. An accurate, genuine, fair measure, சரியளவு. 2. Genuine state of things, real news, உள்ளதன்மை. உற்றறிய, inf. To feel by the touch, be sensible to touch--as plants, &c., பரிசித்துணர. 2. To experience, to know by experience, பயின்றறிய. உற்றாண்மை, s. [prov. prop. உற்ற வுரிமை.] Interest as among near relatives and friends. 2. Close or intimate friendship, attachment. உற்றாண்மைபேச, inf. To speak for--as a near relative, or friend interested in one's welfare. உற்றாராய, inf. To investigate deeply, attentively, minutely, &c. உற்றார்--உற்றோர், s. Relations, உறவோர். 2. Friends, சிநேகர். உற்றிடம், s. An emergency, exigency, ஆபத்து. (p.) 2. (Rott.) A refuge, அடைக்காலம். உற்றிடத்துதவ, inf. To help on an emergency. உற்றுக்கேட்க, inf. uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. (See. சீர்.) 4. தளை, Combination of feet one with another, of seven kinds. 5. அடி, Metrical lines determined by the number of feet of which they are composed, five kinds are given. 6. தொடை, Rhyme, forty-three species are enumerated. சீட்டினுறுப்பு, s. The style or different parts of a writ, or deed, &c. 5)

ulvi (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. and n. To be sparing in order to leave a supply for others, to forbear, or be reluctant, &c., be bashful in eating, &c., உலோபமாயிருக்க. 2. To evince diffidence in accepting favors, gifts, &c.; to be diffident, or backward in coming into company, கூசியொழுக. 3. To restrain one's self, forbear, ஒறுக்க.--Note. This word seems to be a causative of உலவு in a contracted form. உலவியரமற்சாப்பிடும். Eat without restraint, take as much as you like. சாப்பாட்டையுலவிக்க. To eat food sparingly. அவருடைய முகத்துக்காகவுலவித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். One his account I forbore (to act as otherwise I would have done). இங்கேசாப்பிடவுலவிப்பானேன்? Why should you be unwilling to eat here? தன்வயிற்றைத்தானுலவிக்கலாமா? Ought one to deprive himself of necessary food? 8)

eṇ (p. 73) s. Thought, imagination, conjecture, intention, எண்ணிக்கை. 2. Deliberation, counsel, care, விசாரம். 3. Number, enumeration, calculation, computation, இலக்கம். 4. Astronomical computation, astronomy, சோதிடநூல். 5. Estimation, esteem, honor respect, worthiness, மதிப்பு. 6. Strength, வலி. 7. Total measure, வரை யறை.--Note. Seven is regarded as the most lucky number, after which five and the other odd numbers have precedence. 8. Lowness in state or rank, inferiority, pitiableness, or despicableness, எளிமை. 9. Easiness of accomplishment, acquisition, access, &c.; what is not difficult, இலேசு. 1. A kind of rape, the plant or seed, எள்ளு. (p.) எண்ணுக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. 2. That which is incomprehensible. எண்ணுமெழுத்துங்கண்ணெனத்தகும். Arithmetic and grammar may be regarded as eyes. எண்ணெழுத்திகழேல். Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. (The army) crowded the whole field so that there was hardly any room left--not so much as even to hold a rape seed. எண்ணில்கண்ணுடையோன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Budha, புத்தன். (p.) எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time, அளவில்லாதகாலம். (சத.) எண்ணிறக்க, inf. To exceed computation, conception, அளவிறக்க. எண்ணின்வகுப்பு, s. The tamil enumeration table which consists of thirty-six digits; viz.: 1. ஏகம், units. 2. தசம், tens. 3. சதம், hundreds. 4. சகஸ் திரம், thousands. 5. அயுதம், ten thousands. 6. நியுதம், hundred thousands, &c. எண்ணும்மை, s.
