To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

ār (p. 41) . A termination of the third person plural of the rational class, பலர்பாற் படர்க்கைவிகுதி--as வந்தார், they came. Also honorific for the singular, as வந்தார். 2. It is sometimes affixed to a noun, as an additional termination, ஒருவனையுயர்த்திக்கூறுமிட த்துச்சேர்க்கப்படும்விகுதி--as தகப்பனார், father; தாயார், mother; காலனார், the god of death. 53)

iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. To supply a word, &c., understood or wanting to complete the sense. இதனையெல்லாவிடங்களிலுமொட்டிக்கொள்க... Apply this word in every similar instance. ஒட்டித்தப்பியிருக்க, inf. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A story learned by stealth, ஒளித்துக்கேட்கும்வார்த்தை. ஒட்டுவிட, inf. To become loose, to separate as boards, &c., glued together, பொருத்தநீங்க. ஒட்டுவித்தை, s. oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

ōmam (p. 84) s. A burnt offering, the casting of clarified butter, the nine kinds of grain, &c., into the sacred fire, accompanied with prayers, &c. It forms an essential part of the marriage ceremony and is performed at the அந்தியேட்டி, a chief ceremony for deceased persons and in the worship of the temple, &c. In poetry the burnt sacrifice of animals, யாகம். Wils. p. 98. HOMA. ஓமகுண்டம், s. A hole made in the ground for sacrificial fire. Wils. p. 78. HOMAKUNDA. ஓமசாந்தி, s. Mitigating, propitiating by fire, அக்கினிசாந்தி. 2. Burnt offering at a marriage to propitiate the god of fire who is thus invoked as a witness of the transaction, விவாகத்திற்செய்யுமோம சாந்தி. 3. Any additional sacrifice performed to obtain pardon for having omitted certain ceremonies in a sacrifice, யாகசாந்தி. ஓமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To perform a burnt sacrifice, அக்கினிகாரியஞ்செய்ய. ஓமதிரவியம், s. The requisites for a sacrifice including the firewood, &c., யாகஉபகரணம். ஓமப்பொடி, s. The ashes of the ஓமம்--deemed sacred, and used for smearing the person, யாகநீறு. ஓமமண்டபம், s. A sacrificial hall, யாகசாலை. ஓமம்வளர்க்க, inf. To kindle and feed the sacrificial fire which should never be suffered to go out; to attend to this is the special duty of the student or பிரமசாரி. ஓமவிறகு, s. Sacrificial fire-wood of different kinds. See சமித்து. ஓமாக்கினி, s. Sacrificial fire, ஓ மத்தழல். Wils. p. 18. HOMAGNI. ஓமல், s. [vul.] A rumor, report, spreading as a rumor, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. ஊருக்கோமல்வீட்டுக்குவயிற்றெரிச்சல். He has the name of being a rich man, but in his house there is want and misery. ஓமற்படுதல்--ஊரோமல், v. noun. Spreading as a rumor, being rumored. உன்னாலிந்தாகசியம்ஊரோமலாச்சுதே. The secret has been bruited throughout the town by you. 98)

ōrai (p. 84) s. A sign of the zodiac equal to thirty degrees, இராசி. 2. A period of five நாழிகை, or two hours commencing with the rising of a zodiacal sign. 3. The rising of a sign, இலக்கினம். Wils. p. 98. HORA. 4. Opportunity, சமயம். 5. A lady's female attendant, தோழி. 6. Female toys, playthings, &c., மாதர்விளையாடுங்கருவிகள். 7. A play ground for females, மாதர்விளையாடுங்களம். 8. A species of owl--the கூகை. 9. Rice and other edibles mixed and boiled, சித்திரான்னம். 11. A concourse of women, மாதர்கூட்டம். 12. Play, விளையாட்டு. (p.) ஓரையோடுமிவளாடுகின்றமலை. To emerge from obscurity, to become illustrious, to rise to, or gain eminence; to prosper, to be elevated, மேலோ ங்க. 3. To grow up, வளர. 4. To be built up, சுவர்முதலியனகிளம்ப. 5. To be excited, agitated, roused, மூண்டெழும்ப. 6. To be enraged, exasperated, irritated, சினத்தெ ழும்ப. 7. To be raised upon one side, பக்கத்திற்கிளம்ப. 8. To turn up, to occur, to happen; to come up in sight, to appear; to come up in discourse, dispute, &c., உண்டாக. 9. To set out, to start, to leave for another place, புறப்பட. 1. [prov.] To agree though reluctantly; to be ultimately persuaded. 2. To leave--as a family for another house, village, &c. கிளம்பினஆள், s. A grown-up person. கிளம்பினவேலை, s. kuṭṭi (p. 117) s. The young of elephants, horses, asses, goats, sheep, dogs, jackals, cats, swine, tigers, lions, bears, deers, elks, hares, monkeys, snakes, alligators, ichneumons, sloths, armadillos, sharks, &c.; also, the young of plantain-trees, and jack-trees, ஆடுமுதலியவற்றின்குட்டி. 2. A little girl, சிறுபெண்பிள்்ளை. 3. A child, in fondness, especially the youngest, குழந்தை. 4. [in gambling.] An additional coin or seed set down as a stake by a person who hits a wrong seed, coin, &c., ஓர்விளையாட் டில் அதிகமாகக்கூட்டுங்காய். 5. [prov.] An additional sum claimed or allowed on a debt--as a share of the net profit, &c., ஆதா யம்; [ex குட்டம், little.] குட்டிக்கழுதை, s. A young ass. குட்டிக்கரடி, s. The whelp of a bear. குட்டியாடு, s. A kid, a lamb. குட்டியாடுகொழுத்தாலும்வழுவழுப்புத்தீராது.... Though a kid fattens, its lubricious quality does not cease; though a youth perform notable actions, they are commonly imperfect. குட்டிபோட, inf. to bring forth--as brutes; to calve, to cub, to whelp, to foal, to kitten, to lamb, to litter, குட்டியீன. 2. [prov.] To put down a forfeited seed or coin in gambling at stakes to be played for, விளையாட்டிலதிகபந்தயமிறுக்க. குட்டியிட, inf. To bring forth--as cats, dogs and bears. குட்டியுண்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be big with young--as brutes. குட்டிக்கானாங்கெளிறு, s. A young கானாங்கெளிறு fish. குட்டிக்கிழங்கு, s. Small esculant roots growing about a large one, சிறியகிழங்கு. குட்டித்தக்காளி, s. A kind of Physalis angulata, சிறுதக்காளி. குட்டிப்பலா, s. A small jack-tree. 2. A species of jack-tree. குட்டிவிளா, s. A kind of tree, ஓர்விளா மரம். 2. A shrub. குட்டித்தாய்ச்சி, s. [vul.] A pregnant animal. குட்டியப்பன், s. The father's younger brother, சிறியதகப்பன். குட்டிச்சாத்தான், s. (fem. குட்டிச்சாத்தி.) An elf, imp, a little goblin, invoked in performing juggling tricks, குறளி. குட்டிச்சாத்திக்காரன், s. An enchanter, sorcerer, one who is supposed to have power over a familiar spirit. குட்டிப்பல், s. An extra of dwarf tooth. குட்டிவிரல், s. A sixth or extra finger or toe, smaller than the proper size, ஐந்திற்கதிகமானவிரல். குட்டிச்சுவர், s. A short piece of wall adjoining a large building, சிறுசுவர். 2. (fig.) A worthless fellow, மடையன். காரியங்குட்டிச்சுவராய்ப்போயிற்று. The thing has dwindled away, is come to nought. குட்டிக்கம்பு, s. A small stick which children use in play. குட்டிக்கொக்கான், s. [prov.] A kind of play with pebbles, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. குட்டிபடல், v. noun. [prov.] Striking a wrong coin or seed in games. 2. Becoming pregnant--as a sheep, goat, or dog, சினைப்படல். குட்டியடிக்க, s. [prov.] To strike another coin, or seed than the one indicated. குட்டிவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To hit the wrong coin, &c.,--as குட்டியடிக்க. 2. To forfeit a coin, seed, &c., in gambling. 24) *

kūṭu (p. 133) கிறேன், கூடினேன், வேன், கூட, v. n. To join with, to combine, coalesce, பொருந்த. 2. To collect or crowd together, to assemble; to congregate, convene muster, கூட்டங்கூட. 3. To associate or consort with one, சங்கர த்தஞ்செய்ய. 4. To unite, knit--as broken bones, பொருந்த. 5. To cohabit, கூடிவாழ. 6. To meet--as rivers in confluence, or as roads, சந்திக்க. 7. To become reconciled, pacified, conciliated, இணங்க. 8. To be able, be possible, practicable, attainable, இயல. 9. To be lawful, expedient, proper, decent, தகுதியாக. 1. To be fit, to be serviceable, to be suitable, பிரயோசனப்பட. 11. To become possessed of, to attain, அடைய. 12. To accumulate, to hoarded or stored up, தொகை சேர. 13. To come to pass, to be brought about, to be effected, சித்திக்க. 14. To be annexed, superadded, அதனமாய்ச்சேர. 15. To come in conjunction--as planets, &c., கிரகங் கள்கூட. 16. To commence, to take place, தொடங்க. 17. v. a. (சது.) To pursue, follow out; to seek, தேட. பன்றியோடுகூடியகன்றும்பீதின்னும். A calf in company with a swine will learn to devour filth; i. e. a man will conform to his associates. இதுஅவனாலேகூடும். He is able to do it. இனிஅவன்கூடான். Henceforth, he will be good-for-nothing. இதுகாரியத்துக்குக்கூடும். This will serve the purpose. நடுவழியிலேகூடினான். He met me in the middle of the road. கூடிப்பிரியேல். Break not (old) friendships. (Av.) அமாவாசைகூடிவிட்டது. [prov.] The time of new moon has already come. ஆளோடேகூடிவிட்டான். He has begun to come into society (from obscurity or boyhood). 2. He is convalescent; he is getting around. ஆகக்கூடியதொகை. The total amount. கூடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To band together; to form an association, to take part in, to side with. 2. To meet together, to assemble. 3. To exceed, surpass. 4. To gain strength and vigor. கூடிவர, inf. To accompany. 2. To prosper, succeed. கூடிநாடித்திரிய, inf. To associate or consort with one, to be on terms of close friendship. கூடாநட்பு, s. False friendship. கூடாவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A simile in which the comparison is made with a thing having only a hypothetical existence, ஓர்உவமையலங்காரம். கூடாவொழுக்கம், s. Immoral conduct --as of anchorets who in secret break their vows. கூடல், v. noun. Approaching, assembling, &c.; seeking, uniting, cohabiting, being possible, &c.--as the verb கூடு. See also கூடல். s. கூடாமை, neg. [v. noun.] Impropriety, indecorum, பொருந்தாமை. 2. Inability, impossibility, impracticability. கூட்டரவு, v. noun. Collection, aggregate, series, பொருட்கூட்டம். 2. Crowd, association, combination. கூட, inf. [adverbially.] Together, in company, collecting together. 2. Even, also; often in composition with உம். 3. More than due, more than enough, too much; additionally. 4. part. With, together with. எல்லாருங்கூடவாருங்கள். Come all together. குருவுக்குக்கூடப்பயப்படான். He is not afraid even of his guru. அவன்வீட்டிலேதண்ணீர்கூடக்குடியார்கள்.... They will not drink even water in his house--said in disparagement. நான்கூடஅறியேன். I also know it. அவனுக்குக்கூடக்கொடுத்துப்போட்டீர். You have given him too much. ஐந்துரூபாய்கூடத்தந்தார். He gave five rupees in addition. என்கூடவா. Come with me. கூடிய--கூடின, rel. part. Practicable, possible, convenient, proper, &c. என்னாற்கூடியபணிவிடைக்குக்காத்திருக்கிறேன். I am ready to do any service in my power. கூடியமட்டும்--கூடியமாத்திரம். As far or as much as possible; as much as one is able; to the utmost. கூடும். It is possible, proper, fit, practicable, lawful, &c. கூடாது. It is impossible, impracticable, inconvenient, improper, unlawful, unfit, &c. 2. Note to be done--either as command or an entreaty--according to the manner and tone of the speaker. கால்கைகூடாது. My hands and feet are worn out; i. e. with hard work. என்னாற்கூடாது. I cannot; I will not. கூடாதகாரியம். An impossible thing. கூடலர்--கூடார், s. Enemies, foes, aliens, பகைவர். 26)

canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. Division of time in a day, especially meal time--as ஒருசந்தி, one meal, it being fast-day. (c.) 1. [loc.] Juncture, crisis, a critical point of time, தறுவாய். சந்திகாவலன், s. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s.
