[in rhetoric.] An indirect answer--as when one is asked if he has areca nut, he answers that he has betel, meaning that he has no areca. These modes of answering are of five kinds, விடைப்பொ ருளைத்தருவதாய்வருவது. See விடை. இறைபுரிய, inf. To hold the reins of government, அரசாட்சிசெய்ய. 2. The silk cotton tree whose produce is used for pillows, &c.; there are three kinds, இலவு, கோங்கிலவு, and முள்ளிலவு, Bombax pentandrum, L., or Eriodendron anfractuosum. இலவுகாத்தகிளிபோல. uḷ (p. 67) s. The inside, the interior, that which is intrinsic, private, secret, esoteric, உள்ளிடம், 2. Mind, heart, soul, breast, உள்ளம். 3. Place, இடம். 4. As a nominal affix or postposition, it governs the dative and expresses in, within, among, of, out of, inner, interior, intrinsic, esoteric, ஏழ னுருபு. உள்ளிருந்தார்க்குத்தெரியுமுள்வருத்தம். Those of the household only are acquainted with its secret sorrows. உட்கரணம், s. The intellectual faculties. See இந்திரியம் and கரணம். உட்கருத்து, s. To become emaciated by disease or otherwise. 2. To be firmly rooted--as disease. உட்குத்துப்புறவீச்சு, s. A species of hepatic complaint attended with convulsions, ஓர்நோய். உட்குயிர், s. The Deity regarded as the life, or identified with the life or soul of each individual, உள்ளுயிர். உட்குறிப்பு, s. Aim, object, intention, உள்ளக்குறிப்பு. உட்குற்றம், s. Innate depravity. See உட்பகை. உட்கூதல், s. Internal cold, chill, slight fever. உட்கை, s. Palm of the hand, உள்ளங்கை. 2. A person who is privy to, a secret hand--as in உள்ளுளவு. 3. Turning to the left in dancing or other movements, இடக்கைச்சுற்று. உட்கைச்சுற்று, s. Turning to the left, winding or turning back wards, or contrary to the sun. உட்கொள்ள, inf. To eat as a god, or great personage, உண்ண. 2. To take food that has been consecrated to a deity, தேவப்பிரசாதமுட்கொள்ள. 3. To take food, medicine, to swallow, take in, imbibeas the earth does the rain, &c., விழுங்க. 4. To receive into the mind, meditate, or reflect upon, மனதிற்கொள்ள. 5. To wish for an occurrence, or to express desires mentally--as a deity or holy sage (the thing desired instantly talking place), திருவுளங்கொள்ள. 6. To have a secret object in view, to have in view, உட்கருத. உட்கோபம், s. Interior anger, malice. உட்கோள், s. The will, determination, internal, or inmost thought, உட்கருத்து. 2. Wish of the heart. 3. Opinion, belief, tenet, கோட்பாடு. உட்சங்கம், s. A select society, a committee, அகச்சங்கம். உட்சட்டை, s. An inner vest or tunic. உட்சமயம், s. The six religious systems of the followers of Siva, அகச் சமயம். உட்சாடை, s. The real object of an affair, the real feeling of the heart, உட்கருத்து. 2. Exposure of secrets by one of a party by signs, இரகசியங்களைச்ச மிக்கையாலறிவிக்கை. 3. The meaning, thing, &c., told or known to one's own party and differing from that which is made known to others, குழூஉக்குறி. உட்சீலை, s. An under or inner cloth. 2. The lining of a garment. உட்சவர், s. An inner wall, அகச் சுவர். 2. The interior of a wall, சுவரி னிடை. உட்சுவரிருக்கப்புறச்சுவர்தீற்றுகிறது. To whitewash the outside wall while neglecting the inside; i. e. to be scrupulously exact in external conduct, while the heart is full of wickedness; to attend to things remote while those at hand are neglected. உட்சூத்திரம், s. The main spring in a machine, any internal power or operation concealed from view, மூலசூத் திரம். 2. A clue, or key to an affair, உள்ளுபாயம். 3. The main spring in a business, மூலகாரணம். 4. A skilfully contrived rule in numbers, &c., நுட்பமான வகை. 5. A short, compendious and subtle method of ascertaining, or effecting a thing, இலேசானவகை. 6. (fig.) Internal meaning of a passage, real object in view, உட்குறிப்பு. உட்செல்ல, inf. To enter, insinuate one's self, உள்ளேபோக. உட்டுளை, s. Hollowness--as of a pipe or tube. உட்டுளைப்பொருள், s. Any thing tubular. உட்டெளிவு, s. Cleverness of mind, freedom from doubt, profound knowledge, அகத்தெளிவு. 2. The clear part of the liquid--as poured off from the sediment, வடித்தசாறு. 3. Soundness--as in timber, &c., உள்வைரம். 4. Inner measurment. உட்டேட்டம், s. The secret object or pursuit, as differing from profession, or appearances, மனநாட்டம். 2. Property acquired and kept secretly, உட்சம்பத்து. உட்பகை, s. Internal enmity, hatred or grudge, rancor at heart with professions of friendship. 2. Internal, innate, or secret foes attached to the soul, causing actions, &c., காமாதிக்குற்றங் கள். (For the six உட்பகை, see பகை.) 3. Hatred of a king by his professed friends, civil conspiracy, அரசருட்பகை. எட்பகவன்சிறுமைத்தேயாயினுமுட்பகையுள்ள தாங்கேடு. Though the internal hatred be as the fragment of a grain of rape seed, the consequent evil may be very great. உட்பக்கம், s. Subject of investigation or deduction in things of a mental, mystic, or spiritual character. See பக்கம். உட்பட, inf. To enter, be within, or under--as in age, உள்ளாக. 2. To engage in, be concerned in, to be, or become one of a party, or community; to be involved in, to be subject to, to yield to, to be obedient to, உடன்பட. 3. adv. Together with, inclusive. மூன்றுவயதுக்குட்பட்டபிள்ளை. A child under three years of age. அதுட்பட. That inclusive. மோசத்துக்குட்பட, inf. To fall into danger. உட்படி, s. A make-weight, உட்ப டிக்கல். உட்படுத்த, inf. To cause to enter, to introduce, அகப்படுத்த. 2. To persuade, proselyte, bring one into, or over to one's party, மதத்துக்குள்ளாக்க. 3. To include, involve, entrap, ensnare, சிக்கப்பண்ண. உட்பத்தியம், s. Abstinence from venery as a regimen while taking medicine, &c.; sometimes அகப்பத்தியம். உட்பந்தி, s. The chief row or table of guests, அகப்பந்தி. உட்பலம், s. Property at command, திரவியபலம். 2. Friends, assistants, attendants, &c., துணைவர்பலம். 3. Forces, army, army in reserve, சேனாபலம். 4. Strength, firmness of body, hardness, strength from food, தேகபலம். உட்பற்று, s. Internal attachment, affections of the heart, &c. See அகப்பற்று. உட்பிரவேசம், s. Entrance. உட்பிரவேசிக்க, inf. To make professions of friendship, kindness, concern, &c. உட்புரை, s. The hollow of a tube or pipe, உட்டுளை. 2. The small folds of a garment, உள்மடிப்பு. 3. (fig.) The secret of the matter, internal affair, அந்தரங்கம். உட்புறம், s. The inside, உட்பக்கம். உட்பொருள்--உள்ளர்த்தம், s. The real meaning, தாற்பரியம். 2. ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

An unhealthy or pernicious rain being untimely, not plentiful, &c., காலந்தப்பியமழை. நச்சுவாக்கு, s. Malign words of some particular poets. நச்சுவாய், s. nl (p. 270) --நல்ல, adj. [in combin. before க, ச, த, ப. changed to ற் and commonly before ம to ன்.] Good, excellent, beneficial, eminent, நன்மையான. 2. Acceptable, desirable, agreeable, ஏற்ற. 3. Abundant, copious, மிகுந்த. 4. Much, intence, அதிகமான. 5. Auspicious, propitious, fortunate, நன்னிமித்தமுள்ள.--Note. (Meton.) One blessed with a tendency to freedom form transmigration, and who employs his birth, to obtain salvation. நல்லசா, s. As நல்லநினைப்பு. நல்லதண்ணீர்--நல்லசலம், s. Fresh, potable water. நல்லதண்ணீர்க்கடல், s. The sea of fresh water. நல்லதம்பிரான், s. [prov.] The hooded snake, regarded as a deity, நல்லபாம்பு. நல்லதரம், s. The first quality. நல்லதனம், s. Friendly, words, mildness, &c. நல்லதனம்பண்ண, inf. To pacify. நல்லது, appel. n. [pl. நல்லவை.] That which is good, well, very well, நன்மை யானது. நல்லதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak in one's favor. 2. To speak kindly. 3. To bid farewell. நல்லதுதீயது--நல்லதுபொல்லாதது, appel. n.
